Several months ago, I visited Fong Kee Clay Pot with a different friend who gave it rave reviews. The food isn't gross, but it's something I can make myself. Cook some meat and rice, and throw it in a clay pot. Although I didn't want to come here, the rest of my friends were excited to try this place. I kept my mouth shut and didn't express my opinion. Maybe I should have spoken up because everyone was underwhelmed by what we ordered. My food was bland and needed more flavor, but I wasn't sure what to add to make it more flavorful. What I shared with my husband: Preserved egg and chicken porridge with a Chinese donut Chinese sausage w/ salted fish I was disappointed by the amount of salted fish in my bowl. I found a few sheer pieces of basically nonexistent fish in my fish. It takes less than two dollars to make this dish, so I have no idea why a bowl of rice costs $17. I love preserved egg and chicken porridge, but this one lacked sodium and preserved duck egg flavor. My guess is that they made plain porridge and dumped chicken and preserved egg into it instead of cooking it on a slow simmer. My friend had to send her dish back because she found a hair in her food. Cons: Bland dishes Expensive dishes for what you actually get Pros: Prompt and good service for a party of 7. Not cheap, but tasty. We don't make clay pot at home, so it's nice once in a while. As someone who doesn't like beef, I liked the chicken and mushroom. The pork spareibs dont get cooked long enough, and their flavor doesnt seep into the rice as much. Their ong choy was also tasty with nice wok hei, but was about $15 for not a larger portion. My only complained we needed more meat, there was sooo much rice in the pot and not enough meat. Otherwise, it was flavorful. We are glad we ordered another meat option. The place is clean. It's been on our list for years, we have had claypots in the City, but this place is next to our old go to dumpling spot. Service was great, no rush, food was tasty, and prices reasonable. Would I return? Of course we would. Ordered a claypot with frog legs, delicious and the rice consistency was good, the crisp bottom was scraped off and devoured. Another was a claypot with spareribs and preserved meats, very good, the ribs were well marinated. Lastly we ordered the dish with pigs feet, tongue and stomach, this dish requires a lot of work, cooked in sauces for a long period of time. Coming to visit Fong Kee Clay Pot has been on my list for a while since they serve yellow eel claypot rice. I ordered their Chinese Sausage and Yellow Eel Claypot Rice and Pork Bones with Dried Vegetable Soup. They do have a variety of Claypot rice options. The pork bones with dried vegetable soup came out piping hot, the pork bones have been cooking for a long time. The broth had a nice light flavor but mixed well with the dried vegetable. This is a simple soup but very warming. My claypot rice came within 5-10 minutes which was faster than I anticipated. It came with a good amount of yellow eel and Chinese sausage, to my surprise they also added some Chinese Bacon in it. Portion size for regular is a good size for one person. The rice on the bottom was crispy and you could add their sauce onto the claypot rice to your liking. The staff also served some hot water which was really nice on a cold day, the water was not too hot or too cold. Perfect temperature. The staff here speak English, Mandarin and Cantonese. The plaza in where Fong Kee is located is busy, but there is parking - sometimes you might have to wait to find a spot. I will definitely be back to try other claypot rice options they have, as well as the dried tangerine peel duck and their soy marinated goose wings. read more

Finally went to Fong Kee clay pot. Ordered the chicken mushrooms and Chinese sausages clay pot, and the spareribs Chinese sausage clay pot, to go. So no pictures of the clay pots . The lady working there didn't understand me when I asked about the size difference between a regular and a large. She showed me a rice bowl for a regular ‍, but I am pretty sure it must be bigger than that. I ordered both large, but the spareribs sausage box is much smaller than the other one. I like the food. There are many choices on the menu!! This is located in a strip mall, so plenty of parking. I went at noon time, and the place was not crowded, only 2 tables. If you walk in at 3pm, they'd tell you they are closed as it takes 10-15 minutes for the rice to cook*** I have ate here from the beginning... so OG that they did not even drizzle any sauce prior to serving to customers. Now, I'm guessing after reading reviews (of how flavorless their pots are), they started immediately adding the sauce. They serve pickles but you have to ask for it. OR they don't necessarily always have it. Same for thru cups of hot tea (free!). Minus 1 star for inconsistency. Their rice, however, has been the most consistent I've experienced. It's not too soft, not too oily, it's somehow always right on point. Their apps are always inconsistent. Their ribs are sometimes moist, sometimes super dry, etc. Their stewed meats are the same except may be too soft. They also may not always necessarily have what's on their menu as limited as it looks. Furthermore, their soups, although very concentrated... 3 spoons and you're done. The last time I had these were years ago in Hong Kong. So when I saw this on the menu I thought I should give it a try. It didn't disappoint. Both clay pot was good. The prices for the soups were a bit pricey. $10 for a bowl. So we didn't try it. The appetizer A6 looks good but I don't think we can finish it so I would need to wait until next time when we come w a few more people. The menu needs work. I think they should redo the menu. Looking at all the stickers covering the old prices all over the menu makes me actually want to order less bc of their price increases. The bathroom was a bit dirty. They were a bit cheap on the soap. The soap was very diluted. Price is not cheap considering that the bowl is just the right portion amount to make you full so no leftovers for us to take home. $50 total for two bowls w tips and tax. We went on a Sat around 6:00 so it's right at dinner time. There was no line and plenty of tables left. The two restaurants nearby had lines. I was sick for a few days, so I consecutively had porridge from multiple places. My boyfriend picked up 2 porridges from here, the typical century egg meat porridge and one without century eggs. I'm a fan!!! I've been looking for a clay pot place for quite some time. All the other places I've been to weren't as good, rice was not made well, or it just didn't taste good. Since my mom started to live with me, it's been pretty good looking for Chinese restaurants that suited her taste. We decided to give Fong Kee a try and it hit the spot! Usually it takes a bit for the food to come out especially since it is made using the actual clay pots. Give yourself a good 15-20mins waiting. This place also does get pack quick. There was three of us so we ordered one LARGE chicken mushroom with sausage and one regular size ribs and sausage. We finished both! The rice was crispy, the flavor was great. I highly recommend! Our good friends live in Union City and introduced us to this place. My parents are originally from Hong Kong, so I grew up eating clay pot rice. This place absolutely nails the clay pot experience with a diverse offering of toppings and options. The crispy rice at the bottom is usually on point. And besides the clay pots can we also talk about the CHICKEN WINGS? They're so SO crispy and flavorful. You'll never catch me here without at least 2 orders (1 for now, 1 for later....LOL) The ambiance is spacious and clean; service is efficient. Fong Kee Clay Pot has the clay pot game down rather well, but could have been improved. Their clay pot rice was quite good. We ordered the Chicken and Mushroom and Chinese sausage and we ordered the Spareribs with Blackbean sauce. Both were done quite well and the long grain rice was a nice touch. I did wish it was as greasy as it was and they told you that if you left the rice in the pot and pushed it down, it could crisp up the rice and leave it as a nice element varying with additional texture. We have been meaning to try this spot for some time but couldn't be swayed from the nearby Din Ding and Mala Town. My mother in law is not big on non-Korean food so we took the opportunity to bring her here by convincing her it was Chinese dolsot. Rating Breakdown: 1.5/2 Stars for Taste -- Crispy rice, what's not to like? We tried the chicken and mushroom pot as well as the black bean sparerib. I like that you can add your own soy sauce seasoning to taste. They also give you Laoganma chili sauce on the side. The only downside is that it can get a bit oily after a while. My MIL lamented that there wasn't a nice acidic banchan to cut the fat. We also tried the fried chicken wings, which came out fresh from the fryer. Would highly recommend these, definitely worth burning your fingers and mouth for! 1/1 Stars for Value -- The individual pots are $16-20 each. The protein portions are reasonable and they give you a lot of rice. Restaurant is tucked in the corner of the El Mercado Plaza. The space is not very big but generally clean, and the food is cozy and warm. We came on a weekday during lunch and it wasn't very crowded but there were others enjoying their meals here. We chose the Chinese sausage, chicken, mushroom rice claypot, stir-fried choi sum with garlic, and the chicken & coconut soup. Everything was generally delicious, and having been to various places for the chicken mushroom claypot, I was delighted that the sausage chicken mushroom rice claypot had no chicken bones and the rice was crispy, but not burnt. They offer a bottle of sweet soy sauce if you would like more flavor for the rice. The veggies came out just right, not too overcooked or undercooked and well seasoned.
