The ingredients were fresh overall. We especially liked the beef tripe, shrimp paste, and handmade beef balls. The 4-grid pot was great since everyone could choose different soup bases. One thing that surprised me was how many free snacks they offered -- fried chicken legs, shrimp chips, fruit, peanuts, etc. They kept refilling them throughout the meal. They also had free mung bean soup and ice jelly dessert, which were perfect after eating spicy hotpot. Great place to have a spicy hot pot. Watch out though since their spicy level is way higher than Haidilao's so their medium is Haidilao's hot. Their fresh beef tastes nothing like many hot pot places. It's fresh and the meat is a bit bouncy. The only way to get it bouncy is to have super fresh beef butchered that day. I have no idea how they did it but it is a new texture you will enjoy. Their shrimp paste is very good but I still like Haidilao's shrimp paste more since their have a bit more savory flavor and bouncier. Happiness has more distinct chucks of shrimp, it very bouncy too but has less of a savory flavor, perhaps it just has less MSG. read more

I think this is my new hotpot place to go after the previous one dropped in quality. Parking is in the rear, and was easy for us at 6PM on a Friday night. We were seated instantly, but there was a small line by the time we left at 7. Some tips on what to look for in a good hotpot place: -They bring the pot up with solidified hotpot base so you know it's not reused or watered down. Just cubes of butter and beef fat mixed with a spicy broth. -When refilling broths, they use separate water kettles because each broth is unique. If they use the same kettle for 2 different broth flavors, you know the flavors will get watered down with time. -For authentic Chengdu hotpot, you need a can of sesame oil on the side. It's used for lowering the spice levels while making every dipped meat more "fragrant". It's different from the OTC sesame oil you find in supermarkets. -The "weirder" the menu items, the more authentic. Frog legs, intestines, and dare I say pig brain? We ordered a half and half with mild spicy and tomato broth. This place gets pretty spicy, so I definitely recommend toning down the spice unless you're a fiend. The sauce bar is $2.75/pp, and has fresh fruits, fried chicken, and other dishes that rotate depending on availability. The meat quality is really good, and prices are fair for a la carte. Let's just say hotpot, when done correctly, is not the stereotypical cheap chinese meal. My favorite meats were the frog legs and spicy beef that's cooked. The decor is very, very nostalgic. Everything down to the tables and chairs and utensils are reminiscent of the 1980s in China, which I loved. It's very similar to a few hotpot places I've been to in Sichuan.
