For you new school, folks. Let me introduce you to old school. Din Ho is one of the OGs of Austin being authentic Chinese. You can just tell by the types of foods on their menu and their lazy Susan table tops. Aside from their Chinese barbecue. You can get some classic Cantonese dishes that you can typically get during an Asian banquet. For example, Fish Maw and Crab Soup is a very a very simple dish. If you order it, be advised that it always gets served first because, it warms your stomach and sets your pallet. Small bits of fish small gives a crunchy yet jelly texture and, of course, you have the sweetness of the fine shredded crab meat. Always been taught to add white pepper. Optionally, a splash of vinegar keeps it exciting too. The sizzling fried soft tofu is topped with a small piece of shrimp. The inside is so soft, it melts in your mouth. The sizzling makes the sauce caramelized and take on so much flavor to glaze over your rice. Finally, something that I always get at Cantonese restaurants, if possible, Tilapia fillet in a hot umami plum sauce broth. This dish is always served on top of flame that keeps it hot throughout the entire meal. In fact, I don't even know how to eat this any other way. It wouldn't be right if it was burning the roof of my mouth. The fish melts in your mouth, and the broth is so umami, it's worth every bit to drizzle over your rice. Din Ho is an old-time favorite of ours, and we recently enjoyed a take-out meal that reminded us why we keep coming back. Our staples, roast pork with lots of crunchy skin and tofu with king mushrooms and bok choy, were as delicious as ever. We also tried the steamed chicken with ginger sauce, which was flavorful but full of bones, with maybe a piece or two having meat, so I'm docking a point here. The walnut shrimp was good. A tip for future orders: remember to specifically ask for chopsticks and chili sauce, as they are no longer included automatically. This has got to be one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Austin. Traditional family style tables with lazy susans in the middle, very homey vibe! Y'all already know my struggles ordering vegetarian food at bbq places or other places in general but Din-ho actually works with you to make sure you get what you want. I ordered their Singapore rice noodles which typically has pork and shrimp but asked to sub those with tofu and they delivered! It was protein-packed and delicious and I was happy + really full! As long as you aren't ordering it via Uber Eats (and I can't blame them), it's both reasonable AND delicious. I've been eating there for 25 years now. The only reason they lose a star is the inconsistency of the sesame beef. The quality of the meat ranges from good to "what year did you buy that?" and it's very random. I have been on the search for spicy salt & pepper pork chops for the longest time since moving to Texas. Anyways, like I said, the food was BOMB!!! I tried both salt & pepper shrimp & pork chop. I wanted to see which was better but I have to say, they both tied. The crunchiness on both were insanely good, as well as the flavor. I also got the water spinach for veggies and it was great. Stopped by to grab some childhood favorites. We got the BBQ/charsiu pork, roasted pork, snowpea leaves (the water spinach was unavailable) and the crispy tofu with shrimp, & orange chicken! Everything was so good, my only complaint was that we felt we got roasted pork that has been sitting out for awhile because the skin was almost impossible to chew! It was very dried out. The tofu was as good as it can be, they cut it out so steam comes out to hold some of the crispiness. The customer service felt a little bit sassy when I placed the order and picked up. This review is mainly for the roast pork/roast duck takeaway option. The roast pork and roast duck are perfectly cooked - crispy skin on both and lots of flavor. A pound of roast pork will run you around $20, give or take, but it's worth every penny. The only challenge here is if you show up on a Sunday morning after they open (which seems to be their busiest time of the week,) it's a zoo for takeout. There is one guy that manages the roast meat section for chopping and plating. There is also one guy that staffs the register and phone orders, so it's a bit of a zoo between all the food delivery orders, take-out calls, and dine-in orders. Most of the staff are pretty friendly, but the guy staffing the register and phone gets flustered easily. He's it though, so if you want your roast, you're going to have to deal with him :-) I'd recommend calling in an order if you're able, as walking up could be a 20-30 minute wait, even for food that is already cooked. We've been customers for over a decade, we love the food, we have introduced several friends and family to what we use to call 'pound for pound, the best restaurant in Austin', but it can all come crashing down when a mistake is done and no responsibility is taken for it. Yesterday we felt like staying home and ordering delivery, which we rarely do. Despite having a Doordash coupon, I purposefully went directly to the https://www.dinhochinesebbq.com/ website to avoid any middlemen delivery services. Take a look at the attachment included: nowhere it says that I'm now in a website owned by Uber but that's what happened. Not until I get my incomplete order I realized that the ticket says "UberEats". Din Ho forgot to include the main protein dish (Char Siu). When I called them to let them know what happened, they told me that they can't do anything for me and that I should call Uber instead. I told the manager 'No', you call them and you sort this out for me. After some discussion she agreed. Fast forward an hour or so and somebody from Uber calls me to tell me a refund was already process and it should be credited back within the next few hours. I was provided with a case number to reference. It all seemed to have come to an uneventful, underwhelming resolution. Fast forward to today, I call Uber and provide the case number, which they cannot retrieve. Then either the CS rep hang up or the call was disconnected. I call Din Ho, the manager I spoke to on Sunday is not there but the person who picked up the phone is somewhat aware of the situation and dismissively says something along the lines of: "Ah yeah, you're that guy." He thought he knew what the situation was, continuously interrupted me while I tried to explain that he was lacking context, and then had the nerve to say that I was the one interrupting him. At some point I told him 'we've been clients for over a decade' to what he replied 'maybe you should find another restaurant'. We also argued about Uber's visual identity missing from Din Ho's online delivery experience, he guaranteed me that it was very clear that Uber was providing the service (but as you can see in the screenshot attached, it is missing altogether.) Despite this, he agrees to call Uber for me but before he does so, to make sure we're on the same page, I ask him to confirm the amount that should be refunded (the price of the Char Siu). I'm not sure if there was a language barrier but he couldn't simply tell me the price of the Char Siu -- I just wanted to verify the amount of the refund. At some point he belittles my discontent with me being charged for something I did not receive -- as if I should just be 'fine' with it -- and then somebody else, a lady, grabs the phone and as agitated or worse than I was, starts to lecture me on how much time they have spent trying to fix this issue for an order of only $59, telling me how much of a pain I'm being to them, and hangs up. On our end the bill came to over $102 plus a little over $20 for tip to the driver. I was informed that we were given a $25 discount on the order but this is looking like a scam by Uber or maybe several mistakes were done here because nothing adds up. To Din Ho management: Delivery customers are also your customers. It looks like your partnership with Uber might be doing more harm than good. So sad. We truly, truly love your food but we won't be coming back because when things don't go as planned, you have demonstrated a complete inability to own up to your mistakes, passing the buck to your loyal customers. It's been owned by the same family since before 2009 (when I moved to Austin). My daughter's Chinese in-laws always eat here when they are in town. My Viet student had trouble deciding, and used his phone app to translate from Chinese to Vietnamese. Authentic, delicious, reasonable prices, with a menu that goes on for 6 pages, single spaced. I decided to try some new dishes, so I ordered the shrimp with pea shoots, the eggplant with pork, and the crab with fish maw soup. The eggplant was my favorite, and I'd describe the pork as more of a julienne than ground. It had a subtle sweet taste that I believe was perhaps balanced with a dark vinegar. I'd definitely order again. I ordered the pea shoots dish to try since I love peas, snap peas, snow peas...really, any kind of green pea, and I didn't go wrong. They were sturdy and tasted like a cross between spinach and Chinese broccoli (gai lan). The dish didn't have a heavy sauce, but allowed all of the ingredients to shine naturally; they were all crisp and fresh and I'd bet it's a very healthy dish. Personally I'd like a bit more garlic and black bean sauce, but it's a good dish and I would order it again, or try either the beef or crab versions. I definitely went wrong with branching out with the fish maw soup (I should have stuck with egg drop soup--oh well). I even investigated what "maw" is exactly, which apparently is a delicacy: frozen fish bladder. I've added a picture of maw, which looks like styrofoam. Unfortunately, it also had the texture of styrofoam balls, with some having a sort of crunch, like teeny fish bones. I just couldn't eat it, which is a bummer because they give you a large portion and it's pricey. I hate to tell you what I did with the soup--suffice it to say my dog had a large grin on her face. I will definitely return to Din Ho, which has been in Austin for many years. They have a very diverse menu, in addition to standard Americanized Chinese food, a la Asia Cafe. read more

This is a great cantonese bbq place. The char siu and roasted duck were both great. If I'm being really picky, I think the char siu could've been sliced a bit thinner with a sweeter glaze. And the soy sauce chicken was a little too dry. But this is a great option for Austin and I was still impressed. The sauce that comes with the bbq was also authentic. The bbq pork fried rice was done pretty well and wasn't too dry. It was just flavorful enough but not too overpowering. The chicken was very tender for the chicken with black bean sauce dish. I was disappointed in the beef flat noodles because this was not traditional 河粉. The noodles were not stir fried with the sauce and laid soggy at the bottom of the super sauced beef.
