As vegetarian who loves going out to eat, I've pretty much narrowed down on the best downtown eats especially if you work on the western end of downtown. District Seven probably lies in my top 3 if not the very top. Their (off the menu) pesto linguine is to die for. Add in some fresh jalapenos (the chef knows this, I've only had it about 50 something times in 2 years!) and you have an awesome dish. The pita-type bread it's served with makes the meal just perfect. Add in the fact that for about 6-8 months (Not sure anymore since I moved out of downtown work) you got free white/red wine at lunch or dinner since they owner always had a few cheap bottles for everyone. The owner is a great guy who looks out for his customers and never fails to acknowledge your arrival. I've spent many a wondrous lunch and a few dinners here! Tip: if you work in D/T and don't want to waste time, order in and go pick up and it works out great - get out and feel the breeze, but dont expend an hour doing so. read more

Looks like a diner, but the food is alot more upscale than your typical diner food. I ate here one night with another yelper and his girlfriend. This place has it's own parking lot and that's a plus considering how rare parking is around this area. There are several booths in the middle and there are larger tables are at both ends of the diner. I had the mahi mahi burger and fries that costed around 11 dollars. This restaurant is a great lunch spot, with fairly healthy options. The menu offers a wide range of salads, sandwiches, burgers and lighter-fare entrees. I opted for the mufaletta sandwich with steak fries, and was pleased. The fries were piping hot, and came out in a cute little metal tin. The sandwich looked small, but was actually very filling--so much so that I didn't even finish it! I went here to take an employee before an awards ceremony. The food is really good. I had the shrimp and grits and she is vegetarian and had some black bean burger thing. Very decent lunch spot for lunch in downtown. They open from bfast to dinner. Lunch choices consist or pasta, wrap, burgers, or salads. I usually get: mahi mahi burger, Chicken wrap pecan crusted pork wrap They got great salads as well. In terms of food choices its pretty good considering the other stuff you got in downtown. Time visited: Sunday at 10:30 am Company: husband Situation: Brunch, sat in the covered back patio. There was no one else outside and maybe three couples or so on the inside. Hot out but the fans were on, and they have misters attached to the front of them. I had a craving to find a cute quaint picturesque breakfast/brunch restaurant to have a classy morning. This place was as good as I've found for downtown Houston. Ordered: Coffee, mimosa, French Toast, and the migas. Cost: $17.95 Tip: $4 Reason for tip: He was attentive, but couldn't tell me if the breakfast chicken pizza was good or not. Breakdown/Verdict: Atmosphere: Quite nice for being downtown. Not much greenery but it was quiet enough on a Sunday morning that it was pleasant. The fan/mister combo really helped temperature control outside. Coffee: Not the best, cheap ($1), brought out cold half and half. Mimosa: Strong! ($2) good portion size. French Toast: I got just the french toast, not the meal ($4). It was really good, there was just enough sweetness to it and was maybe a bit more moist/mushy than your tratitional "texas toast" like french toast, the butter was legit, syrup was good. Migas ($8): Meh, again, I wasn't a raving fan, but my hubby liked it. Final say: Will keep looking for the picturesque/gardeny brunch/breakfast site but this is a good fall back. read more

Inconsistent food and service, you can order the same plate different times and you never know if it's going to be good or not. Last time I went there was so frustrating, I've ordered a red wine risotto and the guy sent me a mashed potato! Yes! He put the plate in front of me and told me they run out of risotto and if that would be OK. Well, since the plate was already in front of me (they didnt warn me that when I placed the order or before bring me the potato), I didnt want to be rude and said it was Ok. A-ok for breakfast is right. We came by for breakfast based on the dearth of options in the downtown area near our hotel and the reviews seemed good on Yelp. We ordered the breakfast tacos (black and white kale, chicken, and healthy breakfast) and the Meaty Breadfast, and both seemed to be lacking some degree of flavor. I've been meaning to review District 7 for quite some time, so before I head back to Houston in a couple weeks and go for some more deliciousness, I figured I would get it done. My dude and frequent dining companion (a fois gras-addicted foodie, I might add) was attending a screening of the new Hobbit movie, so as any supportive partner would do, I decided to compete with him so I didn't feel any FOMO ;) Staying at the Crowne Plaza (see my other reviews) doesn't offer very promising dining options, so when my yelp search yielded a modern Houston-style food scene establishment with more than one fois gras option (now illegal to sell in California) I high-tailed it to District 7. The first time I went, I had a fois gras flat bread as my appetizer ($10, and topped with soooo much FG!) with a sweet/savory preserve and caramelized onions. It was divine, and quite rich (as anything with a plentiful amount of fois gras should be). The only improvement opportunity I can think of is that the toppings as a whole yielded a fair amount of oil which weighed down the delicate flatbread. It's really a small issue in the grand scheme of the dish though. I also indulged in the kobe burger with truffle aioli and bacon which was insanely good. The burger was perfectly medium rare with an incredible fresh flavor, and all of the savory toppings were heavenly together. The second time, my super friendly and informative server Michael helped me pick one of his favorites, a seared Asian salmon salad with added avocado. The salmon was perfectly cooked, not a minute overdone, and was incredibly flavorful. The fish was so fresh (this coming from a California coastal community native and resident for my entire life thus far) and didn't have the slightest bit of fishiness to it; it was nearly sushi grade in its flavor. As a bonus, since I travel on business, I give a lot of credit to places that are friendly and fun. There were half a dozen other people in the restaurant, all having a collective discussion on football and meat preferences, that were incredibly friendly and great fun to talk to. Way to be a neighborhood establishment and major bonus points to Michael for his friendly, welcoming persona (to every person in the restaurant, newbies and regulars). Next time, I definitely plan on trying one of their amazing salads, with the tempura ahi or a kale salad (or any number of like a dozen things I've decided to try in the future hehe). Simon's review has it right on the wonderful burgers, and I'm looking forward to trying them again. In defense of a $13 burger though, in California food is probably between 25 and 50% more, easily, for the same quality. Houston, apart from chains and hotel restaurants, is a BARGAIN! No wonder it's becoming a frequently visited destination. In fact, my SO will be joining me in Houston over V-Day and I'm sure we'll be coming here. I give District 7 4 stars on thier patio alone. I met friends here for happy hour on a beautiful day. And my spirits were instantly lifted. The weather was gorgeous, the view was lovely and the company was superb. Now add $3 beer......ahhhhh im in Heaven. The food was pretty great too. Self-seating, quick service, friendly staff, large portions, BYOB. If you sit at the bar, then you'll see and smell every dish that comes out cooked to perfection. The crab burger is one of my favorite foods in life. It's an amazing bite of thick crab meat, avocado, bacon, grilled onions/peppers, and their sauce (request extra!). Other favorites are the wild boar sausage bruschetta and pappardelle (seafood stew - get it with linguini pasta). The only thing I would change is the pita bread that comes with half the menu. OMG!!! I had the papperdalle. It's a pasta bowl with a ginger sesame oil creme sauce with scallops mussels clams and shrimp. This dish was to die for. I love this place. My boyfriend had the mufaletta and he loved it. This place should be on diners dives and drive ins, you know the show. This place looks like it used to be a diner in its previous life but now it's a quaint little place with outdoor seating. You can even bring your pooch. Don't judge a book by its cover this place doesn't look like much from the exterior but man my food was just amazing. We had a bad experience. The waiter forgot to put in our order...we waited 45mins to get our food. Folks after us were getting theirs before us. I had the Kobe burger, and it was ok only. First off, went here for lunch on a Friday about 1pm. I shocked to find the parking lot empty but welcomed the fact that we were able to sit immediately. This was my first time here but the waitress made us feel as if we had been there before. She was very bubbly and personable. She also took her time to explain the dishes components and offered suggestions according to our palettes. She even explained that she loved the food so much as a customer that she got a job there! How awesome:) They have a nice patio but we chose to sit indoors, who he's reminded us of a diner. They have good prices, the food was excellent and came quick. Our glasses stayed filled with water and our table was cleaned immediately as we finished. I place this place all the time and am happy I finally made it in. I loved the food so much that I plan to take my husband. The only downside was that my coworker just had to order a slice of tres Leches cake and theirs was not up the par. It was pretty but pretty dry and we all know that's not how it's suppose to be so try it at your own risk! read more

Since it was pouring rain during lunch, decided to have lunch in the tunnels with coworkers. It's was PACKED! There were not enough tables. People were waiting.. Have only eaten here for breakfast (4x). I'm usually a simple eater when it comes to diners. The eggs were good each time (over easy...don't cook the yolk!) and nice thick bacon. My pasta was OK, but I definitely could've made something of similar or better quality. My friend disliked the naan pizza, and the dip was good. District 7 definitely has some things going for it. For one thing, the food. We went on a Sunday, and sat outside. It was a bit noisy as the freeway is literally right above you. It was a nice evening, but the place was not well tended--in fact, it was downright dirty and smelled bad. That would normally have put us off hunting for another place to eat. We decided to stay to see if the food was any good and it was. We ordered black and blue tuna, the spinach salad, and the Akaushi burger, medium rare. Everything came out on time, and was very good. There was a nice tart/sweet dressing on the salad and the burger cooked to perfection with a side of sweet potato fries which were crunchy yet somehow moist and delicious on the inside. Perfectly cooked. An added bonus, it is BYO. Since this is in our 'hood, it is a real benefit, since there are lots of restaurants nearby with expensive wine lists. We would love to see this place literally clean up it's act, power wash the outdoor terrace and furniture and clean up after tables have been vacated. The food is definitely worth it. read more

The Ahi Tuna Burger is my favorite sandwich in the city (really a tie with city's Vietnamese sandwiches). They have a huge lunch menu which my office staff loves. Pastas, salads, and burgers are all good. They also have one of the nicer patios in the city. read more
