EDIT: Met a friend for brunch today who wanted to try District 924. I had not been since my original review over a year ago. Today I had a very pleasant experience and felt obligated to update my original review. We received our orders fast and accurately. Our waiter was pleasant and greeted us with a smile. I have never had a bad meal from this place tbh. Food is ALWAYS good not a lot of soul food options in the area for brunch so I am glad we have this District 924 (gas is wayyy too expensive for me to go to Luxe in Greensboro and Luxe usually has a long wait time). Was able to catch up with a long lost friend over soul food in a pleasant environment. Not sure what happened in the last year or so but I recommend this place and would recommend going again if your initial experience was not the best. FYI: they do have a dress code. It is pretty lax. The main thing is that no slides are allowed. Passion mimosa was also good ORIGINAL: I have had both good and bad experiences here. My ToGo orders during lunch time have been good but actual trips to the restaurant have not been the best. On my most recent visit one Friday during lunch time to dine-in, our Dr. Pepper tasted like Diet Pepsi (ended up getting water. Waitress later reported issues with carbonation for drinks). My friend ordered a chicken philly and was served a steak philly. When the waitress brought the plates to the table, my friend specifically asked if it was chicken and the waitress lied and said yes. I tasted it to confirm that it was indeed steak which my friend does not eat. Five mins later waitress returns to inform that she was given the wrong plate and that she would return with my friends correct order. As a health care professional, I cannot help but think of people with anaphylaxis to certain foods potentially receiving an item that they are allergic to without the waiter double checking when a patron expresses concerns when food is delivered to the table. The very last straw this day was that the ToGo box had a dead bug in it. I was excited to get this place in town which is why I have now been 4 times before writing this review but I will just stick with Luxe in Greensboro for my soul food fix. I had the salmon and grits it was a marvelous experience. The grits were creamy with the right amount of spice. I never had the dish before but it far exceeded my expectations would highly recommend the dish. However, large groups are not accommodated well. They had rules which seemed a bit inflexible. They wouldn't break up the large group for fear that we will reassemble in the restaurant. With assurances that we would not they finally placed 1/2 of the group upstairs and the other half downstairs. With that say it the food was spectacular and I would still go back. read more

First impressions matter. Was greeted very rudely. I had one slides because my feet was hurting. The hostess rudely said "we have a dress code you can't wear slides. " I told her I had some heels in the car. Mind you people came in with shorts,sneakers, baseball caps, and jeans...dress code?? Our server was very nice. She was attentive and checked on us. Wish we found it sooner! Wow - what a gem. First of all, on site parking A very nice gentleman greeted us outside and seated us- we chose their front patio. Plenty of shaded tables and a couple full sun. Our waitress was so attentive and really nice! She knew all specials and made great recommendations too! Nowwww the food y'all!!!! Amazing! We started with fried cod bites and macaroni cheese bites-sooo good and fresh and hot. I had 2 full chicken wings atop a fluffy blueberry Belgian waffle, that was simply Divine! Like for real the chicken was just so good. Hubby had salmon over smoked Gouda grits baby!!! With a fried lobster tail! Whew!!! We just loved it! Will bring the fam and friends. The food was wonderful. The service and staff were great. Staff was attentive and on time with meeting my needs. Special thanks to Manager who also made me feel extremely welcome. Food is good but a bit over priced too many fried things on the menu. Drinks (lemonade) is uncharged after 2 refills. Prices are for a more high end restaurant but the ambience and decor and staff attire are all low end diner quality. Waitress had on tie dyed Crocs and leggings. The tables have numbers on the inside the Texas Pete hot sauce holder. Also there was a wowed guy standing outside (owner maybe) not very pleasant or welcoming who walked us into the restaurant and assigned the table. Celebrating my nieces graduation we were a party of 9 as we approached we were told that my nephew could not come in with Yeezy's on. After clarifying what he was referring to the gentleman pointed at my nephews feet and said those shoes are not allowed. I am not sure why but I did ask if we can eat outside? The greeter says the only thing we can do is order to go food. So I'm not sure what this establishment has against Kanye West especially after seeing guest inside the establishment with CROCS on. The material is the same just a different brand name. I want to warn others that might want to be casual but comfortable and decide to put on Yeezy's. However we took our $350.00 tab to Mozelle's that did not mind seating us inside or outside of their establishment with Yeezy's on. read more

This Black Owned establishment is AMAZING!! The ambiance is great. The look of the inside and outside very modern and sophisticated. The food is HANDS DOWN THE BEST FOOD IVE EATEN IN WINSTON SALEM. We were a group of 6 women. One person in our group had hair in their food. Another person didn't receive their food so we all sat awkwardly until we were able to flag someone down to get the forgotten food. Unfortunately, this wasn't the worst of the experience. The host/manager went from awkward to disrespectful within a matter of seconds. He told us that we were all very beautiful and we thanked him for the compliment. Then he says "where's the ugly one in the group? There's always an ugly one." We looked at each-other in shock and discomfort. This place embodies the essence and flavors and spirit of SOUL FOOD!!! The food is well seasoned and you can taste the love put into it. The food came out Hot and Fresh and in beautiful presentation. My entire party was silent as we devoured our food!! I ordered the Fried Whiting Platter. As African Americans, it's in our culture to have Fish Fridays! Just stopped in for lunch during my work break, and it was great! Excited to have this as another food option in Winston. My boyfriend and I got fried chicken sandwiches, and we were both very pleased. Our one little hang up is that on the menu, the Buffalo Chicken sandwich has provolone cheese in the description but the waitress said it was 50 cents extra despite it being a part of the dish. We respectfully asked for additional seating when the front host was rude and unable to accommodate our party of 10. The front host was very rude and disrespectful causing a scene outside of the restaurant in front of children that were standing nearby. Sadly as customers who drove out of town to experience this soul food experience we only experienced a disrespectful altercation from an employee/host. The food was very basic but pretty good, and the staff was quite cultured. Black folks with attitudes for no reason.....Like somebody did something to them. Our server seemed mad that she had to work. No smile, no nothing, just attitude. The female bartender was pleasant but those servers were something else. I recently went to District 924 to place a take out order. I was waiting inside to get a menu and place my order when the host told me I had to go outside because I was wearing slides. He said someone would bring me a menu to place my order. The host was extremely rude. Needless to say, I left without placing an order. Not sure what wearing slides have to do with placing to go orders but after seeing the other reviews, this restaurant may need to rethink this asinine rule. read more

No. This place had actually was misleading. Maybe they had a off day, but the place was so loud that I couldn't even hear the person at my table, the waitress wrote the order down correctly ( I checked) yet the wrong food was brought out and some never made it to the table. They mimosas tasted like Tropicana tropical juice. My grits were straight watery with a few shrimp on top. Okra was burnt and just tasted like batter, and the mac & cheese is just kfc in a bowl. This wasn't a great experience to us. We sat on the first floor and there was a 30 minute wait despite there only being two other parties seated there.I ordered the salmon and grits and the salmon was over cooked. Salmon is chewy and dry when overcooked. It was also cold. My sister's dark chicken plate was cooked too hard. Our waitress was inattentive. I never got a refill once and I ordered water. I would highly recommend not supporting this business. Showed up at 5:45 pm on a Saturday and the restaurant turned my family away because they wouldn't sit more than 8 people and we had 12. Initially we were stopped at the door due to the fact that one of my accompanying friends was wearing open toed shoes at dinner time. The restaurant is small, and closes rather early ( 7pm on a weeknight). The staff was friendly and our food was made promptly. The restaurant is supposed to give off a high class feel and experience but the menu doesn't match. Options of southern fried food and seafood were menu choices. The mixed drinks start off at $12. I expect more creative meals on the menu or just a modern take on classics. Overall my group had a great time & the service was great but it was more of a one & done location. read more

I selected the District 924,because of the location, the food is really good, Plus its black owned, and it was my birthday weekend.. More people came than planned. I was surprised with people who came from out of state. I requested to sit outside. because of the size of the party 10ppl. We where seated. there where 5 chairs in our area available because I knew that three more people where coming. No problem I thought. Young lady came to the table, very kind took our drink order. I did not share that a baby in the stroller and two lap children was in the count. The three people showed up. He would not set them with us. I did say we where outside. There was spaces everywhere available. The gate keeper would not let them sit with use. we left. The gate keeper was rude, he spoke down to my daughter who is 21 called her a child. I informed him that we where leaving, he said do what you have to do. No one came and checked on use. Its sad that I wanted to support black owners and this happened. Are we going back. I don't usually write reviews, but this was my first and last experience at District 924. Went for my wife's birthday and decided to do takeout. We ordered 5 different "plates". What they DON'T tell you is they AUTOMATICALLY charge an 18% gratuity for ordering 5 plates or more...ON TAKEOUT! It's not posted anywhere and isn't written on the takeout menu. The person who took our order didn't mention it. The ONLY way you find out is AFTER you pay the bill and then get your receipt. That being said the gratuity wasn't so much the issue. I always leave a gratuity even on takeout. The issue was their RESPONSE to my wife, the birthday girl! After she showed them that it wasn't written on their takeout menu, or posted anywhere they just said that they were sorry, but that was just their "policy". They didn't even ATTEMPT to make it right! Hell, they could've offered a free side, or entree.... SOMETHING! They did NOTHING! The manager said they would "bring it up at the next meeting", and that it would definitely be posted by the next time we visited. Well District 924, take your time cause I'm sure we're NEVER coming back! A lot of good your "meeting" does for a customer that's HERE RIGHT NOW! With that being said the food was decent enough, but the unwillingness to do the right thing for the customer, will make this a one time trip! ....AND on top, they even forgot one of our items!!! Very poor service we came to this restaurant after being referred here and when we got there the host (a older black man) instantly had a very nasty attitude and didn't want to sit my party of 5 at 5:54pm he doesn't need to work at the front if he doesn't know how to talk to customers with respect. Horrible place to eat! Customer service is a big fat zero! Chick-fil-A Mac n cheese is way better. The security guy at the gate before you enter is a joke and rude. My shrimp and grits were cold and the give small shrimp (maybe 6). This place will not last long because they turn to many people away for silly stuff. We had a party of 10, I understand if we can't sit together but at least sit near each other. It was 6 of us upstairs and they waned our other 4 to sit downstair. Real restaurant will at least let your party sit near and try to accommodate you! Horrible experience and will never ever go back! I've had nothing but great experiences here. Friendly staff, delicious food. One of the best places for fried chicken in town, and in my opinion the best place for wings. The grits and salmon are amazing. Excellent chicken n waffles. I like all of the sides I've tried in my 6-7 visits. Can't remember everything that I've tried but it was all good. First time going I had on ugg backless slippers as it's is 45-50 degrees outside. My family and I thought we try out District 924. We waited about 5 mins in line to be told I was not allowed to come in due to my shoes although I was dressed fully and hair done but was told I could wear Crocs! It's very disappointing to be turn away by your own ppl when looking to support as it wasn't busy at all. read more
