We stopped in here based on a recommendation from a friend. We were in town for a wedding and this spot was walking distance from our hotel. We came in on an unseasonably chilly May morning nursing a bit of a hangover. Krankies was delightfully warm with plenty of seating. I got the Hangover Cure biscuit, which had eggs, fried chicken, bacon, cheese, and gravy on the side. I also got a hot latte and then topped it off with a cinnamon roll. My partner got the sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit with an iced latte. The lattes: go with a flavored one if you grab a coffee here. Their plain latte was not that good but their vanilla latte was very good. Biscuits: WOW! The Hangover Cure is hefty with plenty of biscuit to go around - I had some to take home with me. It was absolutely everything I needed after a night of imbibing with friends. My partner also enjoyed his biscuit. Cinnamon roll: very good! They had a variety of baked goods to choose from. Definitely worth the add. All in all, I think we spent $40, which feels reasonable for the amount and quality of food we received. Krankies is a very cool space. The shop and roastery have a great atmosphere -- industrial, open, and full of character. It feels like the kind of place where serious coffee is happening, and the roasting operation and selection of beans definitely reinforce that impression. Unfortunately, my drinks didn't quite live up to the promise of the space. I ordered a small brown sugar iced latte, and it ended up feeling a bit flat. The espresso and the housemade flavor seemed to get lost, leaving the drink without the depth or complexity I was hoping for. I also tried the iced matcha with honey, which was similarly underwhelming. Not bad by any means, just a little muted and less vibrant than expected. That said, I'd absolutely be willing to come back and give Krankies another shot. Their selection of coffees looked fantastic, with a wide variety of roasts and flavor profiles available, and the roasting program clearly has a lot going for it. Next time I'd love to sit down, spend more time, and try one of their pour-overs, which feels like where their coffee might really shine. Finally made it over here to krankies after wanting to go for over a year... let me tell you the hype is totally worth it! Such a cool spot! Total industrial vibes inside. The line was crazy long but moved quick and our food came out lightning fast! So many cool details, they sell clothing, alcohol, coffees, cinnamon buns, and, of course their biscuits, which were the main event for us. I cannot rave enough about how delicious the biscuits were, buttery, flaky, HUGE! We got the bluebird, full monty, and the krankies classic, along with a horchata latte and the wedge fries. It's about time I updated my review on Krankies! To be blunt: I love them! Their biscuits and sandwiches and coffee drinks are consistently great every time, and I especially love their blueberry biscuit. If you surprise me with just that, I will thank you with a big hug or a handshake if you prefer! And I do enjoy their space there, especially when it isn't too crowded. I can't believe I haven't written a review for Krankies *self-disappointed sigh* I LOVE Krankies! It's the perfect place for a hearty and tasty meal with a flavorful coffee. This last weekend, a friend and I stopped in after walking the Salem Lake Trail and enjoyed biscuit sandwiches and coffee. I got the Bluebird and my friend got the Dirty South. Besides the sandwiches being only mildly warm, they were delicious. We each also ordered drinks - I got one of the fall flavored drinks (I ordered it hot - it was barely warm, but still very good). We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful fall day- the seating outside is great and plenty, but there is also tons of seating inside as well. They are quick and call out orders over a speaker you can hear from anywhere (outside or inside) so you don't have to stand and wait for your order to be called. There is a lot of parking nearby - either in the smaller gravel lot they have (a bit bumpy, but it works), street parking, or the parking deck a block away. WARNING: if you go on a weekend, expect a crowd/line and food/drinks won't be super hot because they are in a rush to serve so many guests, but everything will still taste good. If you want hot food/drinks, either get there early or go during the week or during bad weather when it's less busy. read more

Have you ever had someone tell you to try something because you would "love it," and you think, "Yeah. Ok. Maybe. "? This happened to me recently when my niece was SUPER excited over a biscuit she had from a coffee shop. Yes. A biscuit from a coffee shop. It's a beatnik-looking spot as you leave downtown Winston-Salem. It's a little unexpected, in that, it's quirky for this city. It's dark, moody, a lil' comfy. In addition to a Chai latte with soy milk, served hot, I was obligated to try one of their biscuits. OMG!!! My niece KNEW what she was trying to help her Auntie with, y'all. When I tell you that biscuit, "slapped!" Wooo child. I need to sit down and fan myself just this king about it. I mean, I really need some air really quick. Hot. I don't eat meat, so I had a (Vegan) Chicken Biscuit (they also have Vegan sausage, but that's not the same sausage in their sausage gravy, so be careful!) with egg and cheese, and then I added pimento cheese, plus many packets of my favorite hot sauce (Texas Pete !!!) in the bag. Loved this spot for breakfast! It was a quick walk from my hotel. I got the blueberry biscuit chicken sandwich. It was so good and such a great balance of sweet and salty. Although there was a jam on the sandwich, it was a little dry and because it's a biscuit sandwich, it fell apart as I ate it. So quite a messy meal but the flavors were a 10/10. My understanding is Krankie's has changed a bit in recent years from a somewhat low-key, hidden local gem serving only coffee to a more mainstream well-known shop that serves food, especially since the recent development in the Innovation District. I only recently moved to the Winston-Salem area, so I never knew that version, but I do think the current Krankie's is pretty nice too. I'm kind of basic in my coffee choices so I'm usually getting an Americano 90% of the time but every Americano I've gotten here has been perfect. The food which is apparently a new addition is where they really shine. They serve a variety of biscuits that have been amazing every time, from a classic style to a spicy "Nashville hot" chicken biscuit. Because I apparently hate my digestive system I usually get a Nashville hot chicken and pair it with a spicy Bloody Mary. I don't say this lightly but their spicy Bloody Mary's are also one of the better ones I've ever had. They also have little chaser bottles of High Life to go with your Bloody Mary or enjoy on its own, which is automatic kudos in my book. As if that's not cool enough, they also have an Art-O-Mat. Overall they are typically pretty busy in the morning, especially on Saturdays, but the service is usually quick, efficient and friendly. I've never had to wait long even during peak hours. The only downside I can think of is things add up here quick and I usually spend a little more than expected. Also their hours are a bit limited and could be longer. But overall this a solid local coffee place that fits the downtown Arts District vibe well, would recommend. read more

I really like Krankies vibe a lot. Either inside or outside, it's a nice venue to relax at with plenty of room. When the 40 car train comes by it creates an atmosphere that feels so cool, sitting at the edge of downtown Winston. Their chicken biscuits are great, everyone knows that. I've been working my way through their menu and tried the golden delicious today- fried chicken on a biscuit with sage apple butter, smoked Gouda and bacon. It was delicious, huge, lightly sweet and packed with flavor. Today I also tried the potato wedges with green sauce. These are a bit more skippable. Well seasoned but not crispy enough and a bit dry, the green sauce teeters on too spicy for me and these weren't the most satisfying. I also had a chai latte with oat milk which was well executed but not quite hot enough. All of the above came to about $21 which I regard as rather steep, so 4 stars for Krankies based on their overall value. read more

The coffee here is great! I'm pretty basic when it comes to coffees, but they had my go to drink, an iced caramel latte. Had excellent flavor and I really enjoyed it. As far as food, I chose to try the dirty south biscuit. Comes with fried chicken, pimento cheese, bacon, and hot sauce. I will say it was good. I think my taste buds are probably more suited for more sweet items on a biscuit. I've never had pimento cheese and hot sauce on a biscuit, so that was different for me. Was definitely my choice, so that's nothing against them. It was good, just something I probably wouldn't order again as a preference. If I come back, I would probably get what my wife got as I enjoyed her biscuit more. She went with the full Monty, which had bacon, egg, cheese along with blueberry jam. All of it stuffed in a blueberry biscuit. We also got a order of the potato wedges. They were a good side to have along with the biscuits. One thing that did stick out to me was when I paid, the tip gratuity was already selected for me to give 25%. I consider myself a good tipper, and always want to support good people and small businesses. However, I found that a bit odd because it felt kind of sneaky/trying to force me to give at least that amount. If you don't pay attention, you could slip up and give that without knowing so keep an eye out for that. Overall, would I check this place out again? The answer is yes. This is just an update from my original review in November of 2021. We came here with a friend visiting from California. The first thing I noticed is that the parking area was just the same as from 4 years ago, with huge sections of the area in bad disrepair and if you have a low car, park on the street. After 4 or more years I would think they would spend some money on fixing it. The inside was the same, granted again, 4 years past, but no change to the inside and it was dark and stark. The servers who took our order looked like they were college-age and not happy to be there. I had the pleasure of trying Krankie's, still fairly new to the biscuit game with me recently starting to eat eggs. My co workers raved about Krankie's a lot though so I decided to go try them out. I got an egg and cheese biscuit with a vegan sausage patty. The egg and sausage patty tasted good but salty, however the biscuit was very crumbly like borderline impossible to eat and insanely salty. I searched google for a coffee shop near me. I like to try new places and figured I would give this place a go. I found the coffee shop as I was driving and made a turn wondering where to park when I stumbled upon a small lot for customers. The lot was dirt and gravel with a short walk to the entrance. The coffee shop is in an older building on the corner of two roads. The outside was decent with a kids play area and outdoor seating. I entered the shop and noticed a large area with seating. It had a vibe like a brewery. Very cool though. I wandered around and finally found where to place my order. Staff was very kind and helped me with the menu. I ordered a latte which is my go to coffee at new places. I also ordered fried chicken on a blueberry biscuit. The coffee was okay. Not the best latte I have had nor the worst. Okay the biscuits are amazingly delicious, but the star of the show was the chai latte. Seriously! One of the best I've ever had. I appreciate that they had oat milk as an alternative. Now back to the biscuits.. I tried the bluebird without cheese. The first thing I noticed was that it wasn't overly sweet at all. The bites of blueberry were both tart and sweet at the same time. The chicken was moist and crispy. A lot of breakfast spots tend to have dry chicken, but that wasn't my experience at Krankies. My friend chose to get just a plain biscuit with chicken and cheese. You know the chicken is good when you don't need to pair it with any other toppings and still devour every crumb. The inside is a bit dark, but there is plenty of seating. The outside is so adorable and has many seating options amongst flowers and plants. Super cute. First thing you will notice when approaching this adorable coffee and breakfast joint, is the fun building exterior. Lots of greenery, string lights, tables, and funky decor. It's a fun vibe. While there was a line, it moved very quickly. The staff was efficient in taking orders and getting food and drinks to customers. As a coffee house, they have classic offerings like drip, lattes, espresso, etc as well as what they call their house signatures which include some coffee and alcohol hybrids. I can't speak on the coffee side of things as ordered a mimosa with house squeezed orange juice for the cocktails menu. It came in a big old glass and was quite refreshing. Their small food menu consists of mostly Biscuits and a few sides like potato wedges and fruit. In my opinion the biscuits were so big you don't need the sides to feel satisfied. I was drawn to the Dirty South (brined & fried chicken, pimento cheese, bacon, Texas Pete) biscuit. It was a big, messy, and oh so delicious. The biscuit itself was fluffy, with the ideal mix of a little crunch and soft texture when you bite into it. Considering the generous amount of ingredients inside, including some wet ones like the sauce, the biscuit held together well. The fried chicken was moist with a nice thin layer of crust. Their pimento cheese and bacon was tasty and good compliments to the chicken. The Texas Pete added a little needed heat. I love all of these ingredients individually and loved them all together. Probably one of the if not the best Chicken Biscuits in Winston Salem. The Krankies Classic is a must have and it's the perfect mix of savory with a bit of sweetness. If I don't get the classic then I'll get the Hangover Helper which I also highly recommend. Didn't even know they did holiday drinks but if you find yourself there during the holidays I highly recommend the Cold Gingerbrew and the Iced Peppermint Mocha Latte. He's a classic guy, and he said it was fresh, simple, and full of flavor--exactly how a breakfast sandwich should be. I ordered the Bluebird ($9), and let me tell y'all... I have never been moved enough by a meal to spend my time writing a 5-star review--until this one. Everything about the Bluebird spoke to me. The biscuit took me straight back to mamaw's kitchen after Sunday School for brunch. The blueberry jam and fresh blueberries sealed that memory forever with Krankie's. And the brined, fried chicken breast? It held its own with every explosively moist bite. And yes--this is a coffee place, too. We had two of the best White Chocolate Mochas we've ever had: sweet, smooth, zero bitterness, and the perfect complement to breakfast. I had been wanting to try this place for awhile- I came here a year or so ago with a friend but the line was out the door and we didn't have time to wait. This time, I came on a Sunday around noon, thinking I might have come after the early morning brunch rush, but that was not the case! The line was still pretty long but I was committed to finally eating here! I brought a book and waited in line. It's a nice, open concept space with some outdoor seating available as well. The line moved quickly though, it took me about 20 minutes to get to the counter and place my order. I ended up going with the brown sugar latte and the hangover helper biscuit sandwich. I sat at a high top inside and my order came out in about 10 minutes. The latte was decent and the biscuit was gigantic, even after cutting it in half. It came with a side of sausage gravy that was great for dipping. Unfortunately, I felt the sandwich didn't quite deliver on flavor. Not bad by any means, and like I said, great portion, but it was just missing something. I added a bit more hot sauce to it. I do wish the egg were fried! The gravy too was nice and thick but somewhat bland as well. Price wise, it's pretty standard, about $17 for the sandwich and coffee before tip. Given the relatively long waits, not sure I will be back here soon - but I would be interested in trying a couple other biscuits and coffee specialty drinks to see if the flavor profiles deliver. read more

I don't know, every time we go to cranky's, which is about once a year, it's just an odd experience. We had went for supper a few years ago back when they did a night menu and my bf's chicken was raw so we were given a $20 gift card. Well we went back again after renovations to get coffee; I tried their matcha and definitely would not get that again. So this past Sunday, we voted to try Krankies again. I had a maple pecan latte; the only alternative is oat milk but it mixed well for a good flavor. Now with that being said, their coffee is good alone, if that makes sense. After we had a few bites of our chicken biscuits it almost changed the flavor of the coffee. Wasn't good. We had not had a breakfast there before, and the biscuits description on their web page look pretty awesome. But that's where it stops, yes the description sound good but honestly the biscuits are just all flower. I had a Golden Delicious, the biscuit was absolutely humongous but so dry that I literally took the top part of it off and just ate the bottom along with the chicken. There was supposed to be apple butter on the biscuit and I did see a little bit of brown stuff but it was probably like 1 ml and I could not even taste any apple butter. Bacon was placed on top of it but, the bacon was pretty raw and just a skinny layer of fat so I gave it to my boyfriend. So there we were with a whole lot of extra biscuit pieces that we wanted to eat after we finished our chicken, so I grabbed some packs of honey- I squeezed that one pack of honey and it was black and I was like oh okay maybe it was just you know tainted or clover honey and I tasted it and it just wasn't sweet. So I opened a few other packs of honey and they were all black, so we just did not finish our biscuits. I could tell by the look on my boyfriend's face that his Krankies Classic wasn't all that but I feel guilty because I chose Krankies so we doused our chicken sandwiches in Texas Pete which helped. Krankies will never be the same. I do have to live with that. I loved the days with the mismatching chairs, coffee and no food. However, I will say this biscuit was on point and a solid amount. It took a long time to make is the only draw back. The service was standard fare. read more

I will absolutely be dreaming about the Banana Pudding Latte--it was incredible and such a perfect blend of flavors! The breakfast biscuits were also amazing and HUGE. Service was quick and friendly, and the space itself is beautiful with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We even saw lots of people reading or working there, which made it feel super cozy. I visited Krankies for a breakfast treat. Order the egg and cheese with house sausage on biscuits, and a latte. Typical but very comforting. The biscuit sandwich is huge and filling. Price is fair when comparing to other coffee/breakfast spot nearby. Would like to come back and try other menu items. I like the design as it keeps the industrial feature. It offers outdoor seating that I think a lot of people will like it during a sunny not windy fall/winter day. If you visit early, you should be able to find a parking spot right in front of the entrance, otherwise there are nearby street parking spot near by. read more
