Mayflower restaurants have been around for quite awhile, some locations well over 30 years. These restaurants are independently owned and operated and the menus can be a bit different, and the service and food quality can most definitely vary. This location is about 15 years old and its 3.4 Yelp rating is a slight bit better than most of the Mayflower spots. Since I was in the area and a bit hungry, I stopped in for an early lunch. I ordered the Popcorn Shrimp, and this was a nicely fried plate with plenty of tasty shrimp. This is not a destination seafood spot, like Walkertown or Capt Tom's in Kernersville, but more a point of opportunity and convenience place. I came in to eat dinner with a couple of friends on a Friday evening. Having been here before, I had already decided to order something different, not fried seafood. We were waited on by Ethan and Cohen, both nice guys who did a great job. I ordered lemon-pepper chicken and jumbo shrimp with a side of veggie-medley. First off, the veggies were good. Probably steamed in salted water and somehow not overdone. Whatever the way, for something so simple, the job was done right. The chicken was very flavorful and tender, Very tasty. The shrimp were delicious. It came with a side of Texas toast as well. All of it was good, better than I expected. Met a friend for lunch and ordered broiled shrimp and broiled scallops. The shrimp were overcooked although tasty. The scallops were very fishy tasting and smelled fish. Growing up on the coast of Maine when served scallops like this, we would assume they were not fresh. So I could not eat half my entree but had to pay full price. I ordered broiled flounder filet, fried zucchini, and deviled crab to take out. My husband found the flounder not only was dark side, ok with him, but also had scales and pine bones! We had a party of 8 which became only 5. Our server, Ashley was very nice. It was a party for my son who graduated. We invited some neighbors. My wife and son had the seafood combo platter, his friend the salmon and friends mother popcorn shrimp. They helped put up a graduation banner for me. We got there around 7pm. We got appetizers and beverages. They brought out our salads. They were big ones. However, she came out with our main course a little early before we had time to finish salads. It was ok. Wanted a 2 item seniors plate but clams was not part of that so I got a regular 2 item plate and waitress told me after I had received the bill that instead of 16.45 mine was 18.45 which the clams showed MP on menu so they charged me 2.00 extra for clams and for a sweet potato they charge 1.00 more which I was not told either!! It's been several years since we stopped here but today we made a special trip. This restaurant offers a very pleasant dining experience. The facility appears to be clean and well maintained. The seating is very comfortable as well. Of course their specialty is seafood but there are several other options available. They offer wine by the glass and although there are only 6 to choose from they cover 6 different types - Chardonnay, 2 types of Pinot, Cabaret Sauvignon, moscato, Zinfandel but no Merlot or Malbec. They also offer beer but since I'm not a beer drinker I can't comment on that other than there are 5 or 6 options to choose from. We had a very sweet waitress, Jasmine, who was very helpful. She suggested the fried green beans, which I tried and thought they were really good. We rarely eat fried food so we just aren't used to it but thought the baby flounder was good. We requested dark side flounder because it's so much meatier and they accommodated that request at no additional charge. I don't recommend the iced tea. I always make mine with filtered water and theirs I'm guessing is made with tap water so I can taste the difference. Next time I will plan to order soda instead. Then they didn't think my tip amount was "customary" so they wrote a 1 front of the 5 dollar tip I left after they still charged me for the fish with a black hair in it. She couldn't understand why my total didn't add up to what she wrote on the tip line. My total should've been 100 dollars and they charged me 110 because they wrote a 1 in front of the 5 on my tip line. I would've never caught this if I wasn't looking at my bank statement! Having lived in NC for years, my friends were all astounded that I'd never been to one of the Mayflower locations. So while out in Rural Hall running some errands, we stopped in for an early dinner. The decor, while dated, has a lot of charm to it, and the dining area itself is very spacious. The service was fantastic! I wish I could remember our server's name, she was delightful and helped us make some food decisions. The food was wonderful (try the mac n' cheese, trust me) and very reasonably priced. I chose the 2 item dinner - popcorn shrimp and catfish, my wife had the small flounder plate. Both were served 'pipping' hot with slaw and really nice hush puppy rings. I had onion rings (upgraded side) and she had fried zucchini (huge side). There was NO oil flavor noticeable and you could taste the flavor of the entree in each bite. The portion sizes were very large and we both carried take-home boxes with enough for lunch today. The most outstanding thing is their cocktail sauce. We have eaten at this Mayflower many times and have always been pleased with the service and the food but today was a total let down for service. I am so disappointed. Having a bad experience is one thing but how it is handled by the staff and management is another. We waited entirely too long for our food and we were being patient with that despite having four hungry kids, but in the waiting we were not taken care of. We asked for more hush puppies while we waited and THAT took too long as well. Then, when our food did come out one of the entree's was missing, as well as crackers that were asked for to go with the salad. When this was brought to the managers attention instead of making it right she defended the waitress. After this the waitress came back to our table and when the problem was explained she got an attitude. To make matters worse, when she was called out for her attitude she denied that she had one and then went into the kitchen and started mouthing off to the staff back there about it. At this point a different waitress was sent out to give us our check. Gas prices and inflation are high so we will not tolerate this kind of service especially when it isn't made right. It may not look great on the outside, but there is plenty of free parking. We were a party of four and service was EXCELLENT. Our waitress took our drinks orders and food order in a timely fashion and had our drinks very quickly. I had the daily special of two, thick-cut pork chops and I could not have been more pleased with my choice. The chops were THICK, juicy and tender. I had them served Cajun style and that too could not have been better. The Cajun seasoning was just right for taste and little spice but in no way overpowering as happens sometimes. I know that credit/debit card companies charge a fee to businesses every time a customer charges a bill. I did a search and learned typically the fee is 1.3 to 3.5% . Well, I recently learned that this restaurant charges each customer 7% on top of their bill when u use a credit or debit card. Interestingly, this is NOT itemized on the receipt therefore u have no idea that you're paying double or more for using your card. This is unfair if not illegal. Why would they double the fee amount? It amounts to pure greed! I have no problem with a nominal fee to recoup what the credit card company charges, but doubling the fee is uncool. Then, to hide the activity by saying nothing and not accounting for it on the receipt makes it worse. So the $5.99 special becomes &6.99! To take it a step further, they leave the tax amount off the receipt as well so u can't figure out what they are charging for the fee; very underhanded! read more

I live 1/2 mile from Wake Forest University. I drove all the way to rural Hall to get our food from Mayflower. I called the order in first. The food was fresh, hot, and delicious when I got it home!! We had to wait for the corn on the cob to cool down! That is about a 15 minute drive without traffic! I give them five stars! I went here a few months ago when visting NC but never got around to writing the review until after we got back. The restaurant stunk and there were no customers inside. The hostess was real friendly! Unfortunately, thats about the only good thing I can say.. the food tasted rubbery and the plates had bits of crusted food on them. Some friends and my family decided to go to this restaurant since they hadn't been to a mayflower in many years. I had read some reviews and was not sure what to expect. When we got to the parking lot about 2:30pm on thursday Dec. 1 there were not many cars in the parking lot. But, two fellows were coming out of the restaurant and spoke up and said that we would enjoy the food! Well they were right. We went in and the place was very clean and the staff very friendly . My friends ordered the daily special fried shrimp and my wife got the senior boiled platter, shrimp and oysters and sweet potato and slaw. I got the broiled combo flounder shrimp oysters scallops deviled crab with the sweet potato and slaw .Hush puppies come with the meal and are on the table as soon as you sit down. We didn't have to wait long for the food to come out. My friends are very picky eaters but we all were very pleased with the food . Cooked just right. I normally don't get desert but asked the waitress what they had. She named off several pies and cakes they had that were made by the staff. I got the pineapple coconut cake and had coffee. It was delicious! We had traveled there from Floyd Va. just to eat at this Mayflower. If I lived closer I would eat there regular. We have been coming to this restaurant for over 40 years and this is the last. We were seated immediately from that point on it went down hill from there. They usually bring out hush puppies while you wait for your order to come we received none we didn't say anything about that because there's usually enough with the food. I got the Fisherman's plater my wife got grilled salmon with teriyaki sauce and French fries she said the salmon was over cooked that the fries were Better that the salmon. On my fisherman's plater I got one piece of flounder 3 scollops 4 shrimp that were like rubber and the Crab cake was not done when we tried to the waitress she was belligerent. As much as I really wanted to enjoy some Mayflower Seafood Popcorn Shrimp, I will have to say my recent visit on 10/23/2019 wasn't all that great.The slaw had a slightly off taste to it, almost like some residual cleaning solution was left in the bowl when they made the slaw. And the FF... I have never had the experience I did with my visit. As soon as they hit my mouth, they immediately stuck to the roof of my mouth in a gooey, greasy, globy mess! Perhaps the oil they fried them in needed changing. Or it could have been due to the potato mixing with the odd, indescribable taste of the slaw, causing the FF to turn into a sticky, gluey substance that was hard to scrap from the inside of my mouth. Whatever the reason the FF were not edible, I still have to say the Popcorn Shrimp was really good even though it was over-salted like the FF. The biggest highlight of this visit had to be the Hush Puppies! Some people don't like the sweet taste of their hush puppies but I LOVE them. They came out hot and delicious to our table. The steak was supposed to be a Ribeye but ended up being a NY strip, it was good but slightly over cooked. The salad dressing was blue cheese but it was watered down and runny. I ordered Perch for the serf portion of the meal. It did not come out with the steak. I had to ask for it. When the waitress brought it out there were 2 small thin pieces of fish on the plate. It was so over cooked it was extremely dry. My son ordered a ribeye it too was slightly over cooked and his fries were cold and rubbery. My husband ordered a combo of scallops, oysters, shrimp and deviled crab with Alaskan White fish. The scallops were rubbery with no flavor the shrimp had a chlorine taste he was afraid to try the oysters and the fish was dry. The deviled crab was the only good thing on the plate. The best way to describe it was. " sticker shock". We ordered three plates and it was $47.00 for a 2 item broiled, a 1 item broiled ,and a SMALL shrimp plate. Along with a 2 dollar up-charge on each broiled item there was another 1 dollar charge for getting it to go. Prices have almost doubled and the parking lot yesterday reflected it. This is our go-to place whenever husby wants popcorn shrimp - although I am hooked on their popcorn chicken (it's soooooo good! - not to be confused with their chicken tenders, which aren't as good). It's a large restaurant with lots of seating. We like the booth seating. Fresh, hot hushpuppies are brought out when you're seated. As I mentioned, I am completely enamored with the popcorn chicken, they are extremely tender and yummy especially with ranch or honey mustard dipping sauce. I don't want to tell you NOT to get the chicken tenders, but they just aren't as moist (and I hate that m-word) as the popcorn chicken. All the fried plates are HUGE and there are definitely leftovers to bring home. If you've got a small appetite, go for the senior size plates! The fried plates come with a side, coleslaw and a few more hushpuppies on your plate. My favorite sides are the fried zucchini and fried squash. Husby likes the baked potato.
