Holy Jesus is this place sexy! I have been here twice, first time was Dec '10 and then yesterday and I think both occasions were amazing. It's a wine bar where every bottle is $32 bucks, it's a cheese place where they get all their cheeses from Murray's Cheese shop in the city, it's a great date spot or a great spot to catch up with friends but overall, it's a just cozy, intimate place with really good food. The layout is very dark in a cave kinda way, I really like the little booths on the right with the plush sofas and the curtains. Then the bar area looks very dimly lit but super inviting, I would easily go to the bar area to have dinner. Unfortunately, since it was so dark, I didn't bother taking pics =( P.S. There is another ladies bathroom with the entrance being to the left of the bar.
The food:
Global Cheese- Accompanied by red grapes, fig cabernet compote, country toast, sliced apple, and strawberry. The cheeses we picked were the Prairie Breeze, Leonora, Pecorino Oro Antico and the Landaff. I thought all the cheeses were great. The toast was crunchy but not too crunchy, it was a nice vehicle to eat the cheese, the grapes and Granny Smith paired well but the fig cabernet reduction was so amazingly good. I really liked the reduction a lot.
-Prairie Breeze, Amish made Alpine Cheddar from Iowa made from cow's milk cheese that had a nutty taste and a nice crumbly texture. This was easily my favorite, I have had it twice and it was my fav both trips.
-Leonora, goat's milk cheese from Spain that kinda surprised me how much I liked it, it definitely had a funk but in a good kinda way. This was my second fav.
-Pecorino Oro Antico, it was expectedly good, it's a sheep's milk cheese from Italy similar to Manchego.
-Landaff, which is a Tommes cow's milk cheese from New Hampshire, I thought the flavor of this was nice but a tad mild.
-Port Salute, semi soft from Rhone France made from cow's milk cheese. I thought this was just OK, it was a safe cheese. Not really exciting nor boring, just in the middle.
Crispy Salmon- Garlic spinach, roasted plum tomatoes, roasted shallots, fingerling potatoes. OMG the crispy skin! It was glorious! The skin was so crunchy and the salmon had such a nice pink, raw center, I really liked the salmon. The spinach was cooked well as was the shallots and the potatoes, but for me, the tomatoes were kinda off. They weren't as sweet as I was expecting and I wish it was cooked a tad more.
Bacon Wrapped Shrimp- with Pineapple salsa. This was a good dish and the shrimp was excellent but overall a good dish but nothing to knock your socks off.
Filet Mignon- Fingerling potato hash, asparagus, natural jus. The steak had such an awesome outer crust on the beef, it had a nice beef char. The flavor was nice, it had a good pepper hit but was a tad salty. The potatoes were OK, they were tender but not really exciting and they gave a ton. The natural jus reminded me of the flavor of Salisbury Steak and the asparagus was very tender and had a good butter flavor, but was a bit too cooked. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=j_HVBvNdnvSQ6nvVIgEaGA&userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA
Diver Scallop(small)- Corn, lima bean, bacon, bell pepper succotash & truffle vinaigrette. The scallop was cooked perfectly and the flavor on this was good but it was kinda safe and standard. I thought the dish lacked acidity and was a tad salty. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=3nSmyCl-DPwCLe8Rua0FMw&userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA
Blue Crab Bianca- Ricotta, artichoke, blue Maine crab, asparagus cream. This pizza sounded so out of the box that my friend and I had to try it. The pizza itself was made really well, the bottom and the crust were so light, airy, crunchy with a nice a chew. The ricotta was probably the best part, it added such a wonderful creamy texture to the pie. But the toppings on the pie was just OK. I thought the crab meat was a little underwhelming, the asparagus cream wasn't really noticeable and the artichoke was just artichoke. When I go back, I want to try a different pie since the pies are made really well.
Cheesecake in a Jar- with Graham cracker crumbles. I thought this was pretty good but the fruit layer on top was a tad too sweet and overwhelming. The cheesecake itself didn't have that cheesecake tang, it kinda just felt like I was eating a thickened dense whipped cream. It was good, but I couldn't eat too much of it even though it is recommended for two but the two small jars weren't even that big.
Heirloom Burrata- Heirloom tomato, palm hearts, watermelon sakura mix cress, chiptole- honey. I was kinda surprised that I wasn't crazy in love with this dish. The burrata, which is like a milkier mozz, lacked a creamy unctuousness. The tomatoes were pretty good but the watermelon balls, while fun to eat, didn't really add much. I was kinda surprised when I ate just the tomato and cheese, it didn't do it for me. read more
