It's been 55 years since I was here last so time for an update. Back in the day, I lived in the Steele Creek neighborhood near one of the Seven Sisters, the Presby churches that were established in Meck County. The Steele Creek Presby building remains off Hiway 160 but the congregation has relocated. The CLT airport has taken over this area. They adding longer runways and expanding the airport. Steele Creek neighborhood has come under 'eminent domain'. This place is a legacy to those bygone days. In the same building and location over 70 years. I stopped in today to get some lunch. I probably should have called it in because when I got there at 1230p the place was packed, no seats available and everyone picking-up 'to go' orders. They are only open during the week and shut down the kitchen at 3p. Very popular with all the area work crews and airport area workers. Each day of the week they have a 'special' so today I got the cheeseburger that comes with a side and a beverage for $11.00 bucks. It was real good, not amazing but 'real good' is legit. The fries were real good too. I took a bunch of pics of the menu so you can see it's extensive and the prices are very reasonable for the food quality and portion size. Fancy, no, gravel parking lot, yes, call in orders, yes, clean, yes, organized, YES! The phone didn't stop ringing when I was there. In the parking lot was Duke Power work trucks, next to Pike work trucks and all kinds of construction work trucks. It's a throw back place that has managed to survive in an area off I-485 that has exploded in growth over the years and next to CLT Airport that keeps on getting bigger as well as other support type business. I'm not sure where the 'grocery' part comes in but they sell beers by the case and tall boy singles so maybe that's the grocery part. Go check it out before it gets gone! read more

Dixie Grill had their bathroom doors open because you can tell they had cleaned them that morning and bonus points, it did not reek of Fabuloso. This restaurant was spotless, it gave me a good feeling. Then when my hot dog was served, it was perfection. My hot dog was wrapped tightly, like a little present. You could tell a Type A person is making the sandwiches. And totally cared about how the sandwiches were prepared. Great neighborhood spot. And the new art installation Troll is nearby, plan a visit. Notice the hours, no nights or weekends. There were some comments about rude service in some of the reviews, I did not see anything like that, the lady in front was pleasant and spoke to everyone and was friendly. Came here on an off day for breakfast because ive always wanted to try it out and I was pleased. Old school feel with just Diner staples not a huge menu but they don't need one. I got breakfast, French toast, bacon and eggs. Staff was friendly and the food was good! I will go back again and try out a burger for lunch ive heard that they were good! read more

This is probably my favorite hidden gem restaurant in the city! Located near the Charlotte Douglas airport is a cozy family diner called Dixie Grill and Grocery. It's a reasonable drive but it feels like you are a world away from the hustle of the big city and are transported onto a quiet country road. Pulling into the gravel parking lot and gazing up at the old sign it truly feels like you are in a small southern town. They are open for breakfast and lunch on weekdays, so it took me a while to find some time to get in here and try it, but when I got the chance I was ecstatic as they have long been on my list of places to try. I absolutely love old school fast food joints. The kind of places where you can get simple staples like cheeseburgers and hot dogs. The kind of place that feels like a time capsule, that entire generations have enjoyed over the years. Dixie Grill is all of those things. You order at the counter and then take your seat, they will bring out your food when it's ready. They also have a little market to buy drinks and snacks. The women who were working that day were incredibly welcoming and friendly, and as they greeted other customers it was clear to me that they enjoyed what they did and that they remembered their regulars. The burger was amazing, and because I was starving I had to order a chili cheese hot dog as well. Their chili cheese hot dog is really a pile of chili cheese fries with a hotdog included. It was delicious! I really hope I am able to return soon, the restaurant is charming and they serve good old fashioned comfort food. My kind of place for sure! read more

Cool little country grill near the airport, not far from downtown. Like stepping back in time and place 50 years. Amazing this place still exists in metropolitan Charlotte. My hot dog was pretty average, but would have been truly outstanding with some house-made cole slaw on it. The slaw was clearly from their food vendor; it tasted just like that mediocre stuff they sell at Harris Teeter as "shredded cole slaw." So the lack of good slaw on my ATW dog is my only complaint. Next time I will try a burger. read more

Dixie Grill is an outstanding dive restaurant near the airport and convenient to the Troll exhibit. I had the Philly burger which was flavorful and packed with onions, peppers and mushrooms. The side of onion rings were crisp and piping hot. And it was great to be able to get a beer with lunch. The restaurant has been there a long time and seems to be a neighborhood institution. The friendly and helpful woman who took our order, concrete floors, movable tables and chairs and visible cook and flat top grill add to the ambiance. Dixie Grill is a great choice for a quick, cheap, simple, made to order lunch. read more

Skip the large parking lots, fancy signs, or large crowds. If you want to find a local that's VERY close to the airport that serves southern charm and good a$$ food, stop by! A DELICIOUS hidden gem! Went for lunch around 1pm, and even though it was empty, we were greeted immediately, and the waitress was super friendly and efficient. This diner is a grocery store as well and had a few drink items as well as household goods to purchase. As expected, the food was amazing! We ordered a Philly double patty cheeseburger, crispy chicken sandwich, and a double chili dog. The fries were the best. Warm and crispy and never took a bite from a soggy fry. It does give a back in the day vibe, but when I tell you these spots are always the best, they truly are. We will definitely be back and try other things from their menu. It's definitely a great lunch spot. They have parking right in the front, I can see there being limited spaces during rush hour, but nothing bad that should deter you from coming. read more

Amazing place to eat! Don't believe the stuff about them being racist. There was a woman that was like that but she is no longer there. They are great people and the food is amazing. It's a little steep for price, but you pay for what you get! I had a triple cheeseburger with egg and chili with a side of fried mushrooms and my Wife had Double cheeseburger with Onion Rings. After reading the reviews on the Dixie Grill and Grocery, I was utterly fascinated and insatiably curious about what this place would have in store for me. The reviews were largely in agreement that the food at DGG is excellent, but were in general DISagreement as to the treatment one would receive from the staff. The staff was variously described as friendly, fun, racist, and rude. I had to find out for myself. When I pulled up, I felt a flash of apprehension and a shiver of fear--not because I fear rude treatment, but because of what I would say back. I didn't want to leave DGG wearing silver bracelets. Surely it can't be that bad. After having eaten here and listened to the interactions, I think I know exactly what's going on here. The staff member most people complain about is named Peggy. She was very nice to me, but she is a rank and file Northerner who is actually a good person at heart, but as Northerners are sometimes wont to do, she can be a little brusque. And some don't take well to that. I think this may have happened a few times. Northerners say what is on their mind to your face, but many southerners say it behind your back. Ah, vive la différence-- It's what makes the world go 'round. The issue here for me is not poor treatment--they were VERY nice--but that the food was just average. Hot dog: this was the best thing I had today, and the chili, slaw, and wiener were all four star worthy, though it could have used more chili. The bun was too bready and was cold. Bologna: they call it "Big Ass Bologna" and tout it as thick-cut. This made me think a slab approaching a half inch of thickness, but it was a quarter inch at best. It was nicely charred and had a good flavor, but like the hot dog, was lost in a sea of bread. Cheeseburger: like the bologna and hot dog before it, the bun surrounding it simply had too much bread. I'm not sure if it would have mattered anyway, because the flavor of the patty was not that great. So while I found the food to be merely average, I found the staff to be very kind, helpful, and friendly. If you have to go to CLT for any reason, it might be worth a drop in because this place is literally next to the airport, and you can park at the overlook and watch the jets go to and fro. If you do go I would double up on the meat. read more

Oh my goodness.. talk about greasy goodness. My coworkers friend told him about it and we decided to check it out for lunch. A lunch special is $8.95 and you get one side and a tea. I decided Togo for the philly burger with mayo and fried pickles as the side. The burger was huge! It was a double and I definitely only need a single party. The patties we about a 1/2" thick. It was piled with onions, peppers, and mushrooms. They put so much cheese on it that strings of cheese were coming off the burger with each bite I took. As for the freshness, my coworker is pretty sure everything was frozen and then just refried. I have no idea but I doubt they are getting their ingredients from a farmers market. But if your goal is to be healthy then just don't stop by. This is a down home, family run, simple business. I was extremely satisfied with my food. It was hot and delicious. As for the atmosphere, it was super simple. The lady at the counter was friendly! The owner, Peggy, was walking around and sits down with regulars. She talked to us and was nice. I've been living in this neighborhood for over a year now. Every day I drive by this place to go to work but never stopped by to try them out. Well, it finally happened. They are like a small grocery store that you go when you don't feel like driving all the way to the grocery store. They also have snacks and drinks. Their menu is not extensive but it is enough if you are hungry and looking for something fast and cheap. I went with chicken wings and fried cheese sticks and my husband went with hamburger with fried pickles. My cheese sticks were not impressive, I would order them again, however my wings were pretty good, tasted just like home made wings. My husband enjoyed his meal. I feel like if you are in a hurry or don't feel like cooking this is a good place to have as an option. read more

I took some friends to the Dixie Grill & Grocery today and had to warn them before we got there that they were most likely going to be yelled at. I was glad I did. Peggy likes to make sure that her customers are taken care of - and that they know to follow the rules. Put your stools back under the table, put your trays back in the pile and throw your garbage away. She tried to chase down three kids that didn't follow the rules. I've only ordered the cheesesteak & fries, but my friends had hot dogs, chicken parm, italian subs & burgers - all said they were good. Service isn't speedy - but Peggy makes sure that it gets out in a timely fashion. I wouldn't go grocery shopping here, although there is a beer cave, they don't really stock many groceries. read more

Traditional, authentic, and spot on southern grill. The Carolina Piedmont Style Burger and Hot Dog are as real as it gets, even down to the soft, delicious (non toasted) buns. Average at best flat-top food, expect abuse and borderline (okay, outright) racism from the old lady of the joint. Seriously, I've never encountered a meaner person involved in "customer service", even when I ask for another beer 10 minutes after last call. But seriously, the food is just kind of average but the portions are large enough that it makes up for any lack in actual character. Brown fried stuff? They've got it in spades. But every time I think of going here I just can't help but remember my 1 and only experience when I went with a group of guys from work. We were a mixed group, some large, some skinny, some black, some white, one latino. The "old lady" absolutely targeted the "POC's" for most of her cussing out and derogatory comments. Called one guy a "whale" and "fat ass" a few times, called a small skinny kid "a stick who wouldn't be able to please a woman" and so on. I mean, more than just a little rude, she was outright mean and nasty to everyone of us. So, whenever I feel like getting a greasy, average flat-top burger and some pre-made fries or onion rings, I remember how awful this lady was (and that everyone there seemed OK with it). I got introduced to this place by my co-worker... it's a street side old convenience store looking place by the airport, completed with the "Pepsi" store sign that says Dixie Grill & Grocery. So it looks "questionable," but let me assure you that they do serve food here. We normally go on Wednesdays (um hum, today) for the cheeseburger lunch special... for $5.25 you get a cheeseburger (I get mine with chili & slaw), side and tea. The other lunch specials through the week are: Monday 2 hot dogs, Tuesday chicken tenders, Wednesday cheeseburger, Thursday BBQ, Friday porkchop sandwich and Sunday Dixie dog (not sure what that consist of). I normally get onion rings as my side, but the tater wedges are great too. Personally the owner lady is the highlight of the visit. She's this feisty older lady who sometimes has a different sense of hospitality (especially toward the male patrons). But to me, she's always nice and sweet. I like this place... for similar price, I would much rather enjoy my burger here than any fast food joint. It has characters, make a great quick lunch place. i got a text today asking if i wanted to do lunch. When i asked where, the reply was, "it's a food place...I think...but we might turn around and leave once we get there." As we are driving down that road that goes by the new runway of the airport, i see a sign for Dixie's Grill to the right. It seemed to be directing us to a place where you would not expect an eating establishment, but there it was. It doesn't look like much and really it isn't much. But they have a grill and a nice little menu with friendly folks working. On Thursday they just happened to have the BBQ sandwich on special with fries and a tea for $4.95. It was pretty good stuff. The 'grocery' items are sparse and while i expected to see Pepsi cans with the old school packaging and not the throwback version, i was pleasantly surprised to find the new 1st degree Doritos. Of note, they do have a walk in beer cooler. From a glance, you will find little if any outside of the domestic standards. Not so much a destination eatery, but if you live out in West Charlotte, they served a pretty good meal. With my expectations based on appearance and location, this place turned out to be a gem. read more

I've read the great yelp reviews and decided to try it for myself. Now this place is really out of the way. Winding back road near the airport. So you really gotta make an effort to come here if you don't work near the airport. Walking in I kinda felt like I was going back in time. It really has that southern feel to it. I made sure to stay in plain sight, so that I wouldn't relive "My cousin Vinny" My order was taken by a woman who I could tell was sizing me up right as i walked in. being that it was my first time here I asked who I assume is the owner what she would recommend. She said "burger". So a burger it will be! Took about 10 minutes to get my food. I didn't smell any fired beef which I thought was weird. When Place is known for a particular food, I think you should be able to smell that specialty even before walking in. So I got my food and ate in my car like I normally do. The onion rings were really good. Big thick slices. I unwrapped my burger and it looked really good. Well put together. Side note, the wrapping was cool to the touch. Which I found strange. When I bit into it, I wasn't blown away. It was a nice burger, but I can't say it was a great burger. The temperature was warm, which I don't understand because they cooked it in front of me. I've found a ton of great places on yelp because of great reviews, but I don't believe this was one of them. I do respect the small businessperson and recommend supporting them. So if you agree with that, skip the large chains and grab a burger from a mom and pop. read more

For a little hole in the wall grill, this place has some really good food. I think they have the best burgers and hotdogs in Charlotte. The club sandwich is so simple but sends your brain into euphoria when you bite into. Peggy the owner is a trip and will tell you how it is.
