Our destination was Mackinac Island, and our ferry would be ready for boarding in about an hour, so we looked for nearby restaurants. We selected Dixie Saloon Brewery, which is located across the parking lot from where we would catch Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The Dixie Saloon is spacious, with a high ceiling and rustic décor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Included in the multiple themes decorating the place are towers to which all manner of currency has been fixed, suggesting years of the accumulation of real paper money. Between the four of us we shared a basket of onion rings ($9.99) and fries ($8.99) - they're on the menu featuring side dishes, but they easily fed the four of us. I had a Kentucky Mule (Bulleit Bourbon and ginger beer, $12), so our bill came to $46, which included state sales tax and a 3.5% Michigan administrative sustainability fee. Not a bad bill for lunch for the four of us. What a terrible place to eat! our group of 4 were seated upstairs, ordered drinks and food, then saw a friend downstairs. we invited him to come up and eat with us, and when he did he mentioned 4 others from our ski group (24) were on their way. So we went down to his table, a bigger table, and had a seat. The server came by and asked if we wanted to order, to which we said we already had ordered upstairs but were going to move down to dine with our friend in a larger table. We were told we couldn't do that and had to go back upstairs! I asked to talk to a manager. When the manager came out, without even asking what was going on, He told me we had to go back upstairs and could not join our group! When I questioned his remark, he looked at me and said " you can leave" So we did! We went to Audies a few blocks away..... MUCH better food, DEFINITELY better prices and in talking to a few locals, found out how BAD customer service is at DIXIE, and that NONE of the locals will eat there! Management doesn't care about customers, just get them in and get them out! 100% tourist trap, HIGH prices, TERRIBLE staff including the "MANAGER" This is definitely a place that will fail and rightfully so. Went here on our first night of vacation for dinner as it used to be a favorite whenever we traveled to this area. it was so disappointing! service was sub par. waiter came by only to take our order and handle our bill. no check ins. Food quality was subpar. I ordered the "Ultimate Mac ' n Cheese." Cheese was runny, very little actually pulled pork on it, onion rings were drowned in so much bbq sauce it was hard to eat. Husband ordered a burger. it was fine but didn't have the condiments he requested. took a bit to get someone to bring us the correct condiments. Truly don't come here. The amount of bugs including ants and midge is unbelievable. My table was so sticky that I was able to completely open their menu completely flat and it stuck to the table. If you're looking for something up to the health inspectors code don't come here. I can't fathom what their kitchen must look like. I probably ate the manure that they pick up on Mackinaw Island. Not very convenient for the senior side of the tourist industry. The food was decent but it was definitely freezer to table that is when we were actually served. I know it was end of season, but the late step behind the bar which was approximately four or five at one time definitely didn't have time for customers. They did have a lot of time to gossip back and forth are complain about situations that they have worked through. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst dining experiences we have had in a long time. Our server Anita was fantastic -- friendly, attentive, and clearly doing her best -- but everything else was a hot mess. The food was disappointing, and the timing was completely off. Some dishes came out over 15 minutes after the others, and forget drinks! Those came out over 20 minutes after we ordered each rounds. We actually got the check and then a drink was served. That one went right back. To make things worse, the manager Logan handled the disappointing situation terribly. Instead of apologizing or offering any sort of compensation for the poor experience, he blamed the slow delivery of food on servers taking each others dishes and said he would talk to the kitchen about the situation. And here's the best part...we were offered water to go. Seriously? What manager offers customers who are incredibly disappointed in their dining experience water as an apology? It's a shame because the server was great, but the overall experience was unacceptable. I would never come back and absolutely do not recommend this place. Brewery #274 Yet another tourist trap but that's basically the whole town. Dixie Saloon and Brewery as they now call themselves is kind of a misnomer. The top of the Mitten of Michigan is about as far from Dixie as you can get. We stopped here to eat and get a few beers. They supposedly brew their own beer and have several to choose from. I just grabbed a couple of their Hazy Enough which is the name of their hazy IPA. It was actually pretty good. For dinner I got a Reuben Sandwich with "spicy beans" as a side. I wanted French Fries but it was a 4.75 UPCHARGE for fries. WTF? That's not the cost that's the upcharge. Are these fries hand cut with Ginsu knives cooked in Lambda luxury olive oil from Greece then tossed in white truffles? Anyway the sandwich itself was pretty good with a decent amount of meat. The beans were mediocre at best. Spicy beans equal: Campbell's pork and beans with a few pieces of jalapeno and pineapple. Overall everything was ok but like everything in Mackinaw City, it's overpriced for what you get. read more

On a girls trip to mackinaw city we decided to try this place which at first we did not know was the same kitchen as the Irish pub (which isn't even Irish). We tried it the first night after 10pm and got their late night menu which has very few options. Went with the chicken strips and fries. The strips tasted like they sat out all day, fries were good. We decided to give it one more shot the next day for dinner before 10 and I got the Mack and cheese which was good but services was very slow!! 30+ minutes for our food to come and we barely had our waitress/waiter come to the table to get us refills on water. I got a pop the second night and got a refill and was surprised when the bill reflected 2 pops. They charge per cup you get. I had no idea. My friend got the poutine and the menu was very misleading. The cheese curds were all melted and not left in curd form and the cheese was hardened at the point of us receiving it. They took the poutine away and gave my friend the fried cheese curds themselves which was not what she wanted at all. Not once while there did we ever feel listened to. Bad service, gross food, ridiculous prices for portions. We will never be back and we will never recommend this place to anyone. Dixie saloon is a much louder environment vs the Irish bar side that was quieter. read more

It is definitely a bar with some character (writing and money on the walls). For everyone saying it is a tourist trap, well the whole town is geared towards tourist. They do offer a good number of beer to choose from and the food is typical bar food. I would say that the serving sizes are massive. We couldn't finish either plate. We had the Mackinac n Cheese and Red Eye Rueben. Both had good flavor. We also tried the Soulful Red and Happy Blonde beer. Not a bad spot for a quick dinner or to grab a beer. We were warmly welcomed by Nadesha, and shown to our table. We were greatly helped by Sheldon, the bar tender, as well as server, as he helped us to pick out beers to sample, a great stout and an amber - which my wife said was the best beer she ever had - both brewed on site. Sheldon was friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and efficient - again, both serving tables and pouring beers and mixing drinks. I would like to give Sheldon an "11" on a scale of "10" - much like the movie "Spinal Tap", which just had a sequel released. Terrible Management - Avoid This PlaceWe had an incredibly disappointing and uncomfortable experience here. Two of us ordered chili and the other two ordered meatloaf--all four meals came out completely cold. We had to send everything back to be reheated. By the time our food was brought back out, the first two people in our party were completely finished eating, totally ruining our family dinner.The only positive part of our night was our server, Angela. She was wonderful, happy, and welcoming when we arrived, and she was genuinely upset that our food was served cold. She went to the manager to explain our situation, but instead of apologizing or coming over to make things right, the manager just laughed at her. Coming to Northern Michigan out of season there are not a lot of options for dining; therefore Dixie Saloon it was. The waitress was great, a little 'flighty' but she was friendly and was a great help with menu options. Most of their burgers were 1/4 or 1/2 pound and that is a bit much for me and I opted for a kids burger with cheese (burger was overcooked) and no bun, fries and a cookie & the other burger was just their jalapeño burger with bacon (burger was good) and fries all for $50.80. A bit pricey with one of the meals being a kids meal. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was different as there were dollar bills all over the walls and writing all over the walls. If you trust the kitchen to not cause cross contamination, with a deep fryer that is used for all items. Chips are frozen and deep fried, box not labeled GF from the picture I was shown. The service, was abrasive, dismissive and argumentative concerning the gluten free products. Ambiance is cool, seating has heavy wooden chairs and rustic charm. The ice water was cold and refreshing. I had been craving a salad and wanted to eat it on the way home. I waited at most 30 mins and opened up the food container and the lettuce was wilted and slimy. Slimy only happens when the lettuce is well past its expiration...gross!..and you thought that was okay to serve? I could deal with wilt since I waited thst 30 mins...but that slime? Unexcusable. The good was staff quick service and all with a smile. We were with a tour group so tables were reserved and we had a special menu. First salad came out. This salad had everything Croutons, cucumber, tomato,lettuce and cheese. Great dressings assorted. Problem it is brought in a bowl and stuffed so you cannot turn or mix the salad without a mess. Better would be a plate. I ordered the meatloaf which was presented well and delicious with corn and mashed potatoes with gravy and a few onions rings on too. I know this is crazy but food for four people easily in the main serving then cheesecake for dessert. I was so full i was uncomfortable.
