We arrived in Mackinaw City in July 2026 and had just gotten into town when we decided to find somewhere to grab a bite to eat. After looking around, we decided to give Dixie Tavern a try. The setup is pretty interesting, with seating available both downstairs and upstairs. We ended up sitting upstairs, but unfortunately, we waited about 30 minutes before anyone came over to take our order. Our group ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich, American Burger, and Western Burger, all of which came with a side of chips. The food was okay, but honestly, it wasn't anything to write home about. Overall, it wasn't a terrible experience, but the long wait for service and average food made it difficult to stand out. There are probably other places in Mackinaw City I'd try before returning here. read more

Dollar bills all over the place which was interesting and seeing all the marker and crayon drawings on the table was unique but also felt dirty. Service was spotty. Host after directing us to where the wheelchair ramp was then chased us down challenging the legitimacy of our service dog asking for papers. It was busy so took a while for someone to get to our table for drinks. Dixie Saloon Brewery, Mackinaw City, Michigan Traveling from Grand Rapids with friends, we arrived at Mackinaw City on a weekday in June 2026. Our destination was Mackinac Island, and our ferry would be ready for boarding in about an hour, so we looked for nearby restaurants. We selected Dixie Saloon Brewery, which is located across the parking lot from where we would catch Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry. The Dixie Saloon is spacious, with a high ceiling and rustic décor. Included in the multiple themes decorating the place are towers to which all manner of currency has been fixed, suggesting years of the accumulation of real paper money. Between the four of us we shared a basket of onion rings ($9.99) and fries ($8.99) - they're on the menu featuring side dishes, but they easily fed the four of us. I had a Kentucky Mule (Bulleit Bourbon and ginger beer, $12), so our bill came to $46, which included state sales tax and a 3.5% Michigan administrative sustainability fee. Not a bad bill for lunch for the four of us. Service was great on a very busy Tuesday afternoon, and noise levels were moderate, allowing for easy inside-voices conversations. The waffle fries and onion rings came out within 20 minutes of our ordering them, drinks even sooner. They were piping hot and perfectly seasoned, with servings large enough that we didn't finish them by the time our ferry was starting to board. With just a five-minute walk we were on board and headed to the island. A very nice way to spend some time with friends over a light lunch. read more

Service was excellent: even being in there by myself it really rocked! Atmosphere is unique with signed dollar bills pasted up everywhere and some customer graffiti. Whitefish and chips was decent, and they do have a selection of nonalcoholic beers. The guy out in front was almost like a carnival hustler! You can sit outside with a dog if you want. Ambiance is not good in my opinion. The dollars hanging all over the wall are cool but all the graffiti and the windows do not look like they have been cleaned in years which makes this place look dumpy. This place is awful. Plates/glasses/silverware were not clean, flies in the restaurant, and overpriced food. I ordered a sandwich that came with a hair in it and asked for the manager to comp the cost, which they rudely refused. Server failed to mention large up charges for the bill for sides that were supposedly included with the meal. On a trip in August we visited here for dinner after a long drive and found the food to be good, though nothing special, something unique to us was the side options instead of fries being chips and or beans, though the chips were pretty good. Our waitress was fantastic, even gave me grenadine in my Coke to make it cherry, but elsewhere I noticed someone working at the bar frequently vaping with all of the drinks which could be a bit off putting. The location has dollar bills with names written on them plastered along all the walls, poles, and lighting giving a very local hotspot bar kind of vibe, with names written on tables as well. They had live music at the front door which was not intrusive if you weren't there for it. If you like a good bar and don't mind a bit of smoke, then this place is a good option, if you just want a burger at a bar, you could definitely find that here and not be left wanting, though I still don't believe this place is for everyone unfortunately. read more

What a terrible place to eat! our group of 4 were seated upstairs, ordered drinks and food, then saw a friend downstairs. we invited him to come up and eat with us, and when he did he mentioned 4 others from our ski group (24) were on their way. So we went down to his table, a bigger table, and had a seat. The server came by and asked if we wanted to order, to which we said we already had ordered upstairs but were going to move down to dine with our friend in a larger table. We were told we couldn't do that and had to go back upstairs! I asked to talk to a manager. When the manager came out, without even asking what was going on, He told me we had to go back upstairs and could not join our group! When I questioned his remark, he looked at me and said " you can leave" So we did! We went to Audies a few blocks away..... MUCH better food, DEFINITELY better prices and in talking to a few locals, found out how BAD customer service is at DIXIE, and that NONE of the locals will eat there! Management doesn't care about customers, just get them in and get them out! 100% tourist trap, HIGH prices, TERRIBLE staff including the "MANAGER" This is definitely a place that will fail and rightfully so. Well, this is your obvious tourist area Bar and grill. It's western themed and extremely large. The seats at the high top were saddles. Not very convenient for the senior side of the tourist industry. The rest of the chairs were very small in comparison. I know I'm a larger person but my friend is only 5 6 160 and his hips were being pinched just as well. The food was decent but it was definitely freezer to table that is when we were actually served. I know it was end of season, but the late step behind the bar which was approximately four or five at one time definitely didn't have time for customers. They did have a lot of time to gossip back and forth are complain about situations that they have worked through. Finally know that because they did that you're shy of everyone sitting at the bar. I don't know how places with the footprint that large continues to make it in our economy with their quality and make it in our economy. Sorry about that. read more

Truly don't come here. The amount of bugs including ants and midge is unbelievable. My table was so sticky that I was able to completely open their menu completely flat and it stuck to the table. If you're looking for something up to the health inspectors code don't come here. I can't fathom what their kitchen must look like. I probably ate the manure that they pick up on Mackinaw Island. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst dining experiences we have had in a long time. Our server Anita was fantastic -- friendly, attentive, and clearly doing her best -- but everything else was a hot mess. The food was disappointing, and the timing was completely off. Some dishes came out over 15 minutes after the others, and forget drinks! Those came out over 20 minutes after we ordered each rounds. We actually got the check and then a drink was served. That one went right back. To make things worse, the manager Logan handled the disappointing situation terribly. Instead of apologizing or offering any sort of compensation for the poor experience, he blamed the slow delivery of food on servers taking each others dishes and said he would talk to the kitchen about the situation. And here's the best part...we were offered water to go. Seriously? What manager offers customers who are incredibly disappointed in their dining experience water as an apology? It's a shame because the server was great, but the overall experience was unacceptable. I would never come back and absolutely do not recommend this place. Brewery #274 Yet another tourist trap but that's basically the whole town. Dixie Saloon and Brewery as they now call themselves is kind of a misnomer. The top of the Mitten of Michigan is about as far from Dixie as you can get. We stopped here to eat and get a few beers. They supposedly brew their own beer and have several to choose from. I just grabbed a couple of their Hazy Enough which is the name of their hazy IPA. It was actually pretty good. For dinner I got a Reuben Sandwich with "spicy beans" as a side. I wanted French Fries but it was a 4.75 UPCHARGE for fries. WTF? That's not the cost that's the upcharge. Are these fries hand cut with Ginsu knives cooked in Lambda luxury olive oil from Greece then tossed in white truffles? Anyway the sandwich itself was pretty good with a decent amount of meat. The beans were mediocre at best. Spicy beans equal: Campbell's pork and beans with a few pieces of jalapeno and pineapple. Overall everything was ok but like everything in Mackinaw City, it's overpriced for what you get. read more

Went here on our first night of vacation for dinner as it used to be a favorite whenever we traveled to this area. it was so disappointing! service was sub par. waiter came by only to take our order and handle our bill. no check ins. Food quality was subpar. I ordered the "Ultimate Mac ' n Cheese." Cheese was runny, very little actually pulled pork on it, onion rings were drowned in so much bbq sauce it was hard to eat. Husband ordered a burger. it was fine but didn't have the condiments he requested. took a bit to get someone to bring us the correct condiments. It is definitely a bar with some character (writing and money on the walls). For everyone saying it is a tourist trap, well the whole town is geared towards tourist. They do offer a good number of beer to choose from and the food is typical bar food. I would say that the serving sizes are massive. We couldn't finish either plate. We had the Mackinac n Cheese and Red Eye Rueben. Both had good flavor. We also tried the Soulful Red and Happy Blonde beer. Not a bad spot for a quick dinner or to grab a beer. First off let me say our service/server was great, so if the following doesn't concern you then you'll probably enjoy. The food is subpar, especially for the price. Could definitely get a more fulfilling meal anywhere else in town. I got the fish sandwich and my husband got a burger. After receiving the bill, we learned you're charged for the lettuce, tomato, onion that comes on the sandwiches and it's not included in the already high prices.
