We decided to give it another chance because we had our dog with us and she was allowed to sit on the patio. We are so glad we did. We went about 6:00 on a July Friday evening. We just wanted a quick bite to eat while we walked around the shopping area. They have a full bar and a restaurant and a small patio as well. They serve typical American cuisine. I ordered the cheese burger with sauteed mushrooms. The server didn't ask me how I wanted it cooked, you know it's going to be overcooked when they don't even ask you how you want a burger cooked. Ate here with a tour group; the restaurant was dead! My smothered chicken was tiny, inedible, tough, dry, and strangely bitter with very dark onions and mushrooms as well as just the slightest hint of dehydrated rubber something that may have been cheese at some point. The "TV dinner" vegetables were straight out of a freezer bag (peas/carrots/green beans/corn). My mom's whitefish was also dry and tasted "off". Mashed potatoes were okay once I added butter and salt. Salad was okay, too. After talking to other members of our group, bad food seemed to be the norm for the evening. I get that tour companies find the lowest price for meals, and restaurants have to make a profit, but that doesn't mean the food has to be badly prepared. read more

Bartender had 8 beers on tap and didn't know what they were. Had to stare at the tap handles and try to figure it out. Ordered wings as we sat down, and 35 minutes later we were told 'the manager was checking on them'. Never got them. No apology. Avoid at all costs. Unlike some reviewers I actually really enjoyed this place. The food was good and it came out really fast. The waitress we had was really nice and got all of our orders correct. Waited 15min alone outside and had to go inside to ask for someone. Paid $17.00 bucks for 5 pieces of shrimp that where not JUMBO!! Just crazy. Partner ordered code the fillets where tiny. It was not busy. There was one other party leaving as we were being seated, but we had to wait a good 10 mins before they even noticed we were there, and another 10 mins before she sat us. Drinks were ordered 2 soft drinks one water and one margarita. Got the soft drinks and water, placed our food order when she came back another 10-15 mins later. (Still no margarita) Another 20 mins go by, both soft drinks are gone and no offer of a refill. Then the food comes out. The sides are wrong.(Still no margarita) Question the alcoholic drink, its brought over fast. Its just ice cubes. I was under the impression its supposed to be crushed up. The food was hot. Our group had a "banquet" type meal here with preordered entrees. Waitress was excellent and even with a crowd she kept it all flowing and was very friendly. Atmosphere of rest. good and fun. I had baked cod and it came with salad, mashed potatoes/gravy, veggies and dessert. I enjoyed the crusted cod although because of steam table, its presentation was a little pale. The mashed potatoes were real and the gravy good. Veggies steamed frozen but not mushy. Salad fine. Took cheesecake home and it was acceptable. I'm only giving it one star to get my rating on here. Staff was very friendly but the food was gross. Salad had several rotten pieces of lettuce in it so our server took it off the bill (yay!!) and the steak bites were gag worthy. My husband did order them medium rare but they were grey and fatty. The food was decent. The service was slow and the server had to come back multiple times to remind herself of things she still needed to bring to the table. The place was busy; but not overly (we didn't even have to wait to sit down) yet the food took about 30-45 minutes to come out of the kitchen. The highlight was the perogies from the appetizer menu, but their overall food selection is highly limited (one double sided sheet with large print, ~10 course offerings). During our meal we noticed a few other tables have similar issues such as long waits to even get the server introduction and initial beverages. We would eat here again if we were in the area but would definitely try other places well before this became the option we settled on. Oh yeah, slightly overpriced for what you get, but the outside seating was prime for a lazy summer evening with that awesome lake breeze. *Update* Our salad and burger took over an hour to make, and we didn't have time wait much longer. *Dog Friendly Patio* They won our hearts simply by having a dog friendly patio. After spending a few hours on the Island we were looking for a place to eat where we could have the dog. A store in the city wasn't sure but thought we could come here. We had a great lunch (white fish, coleslaw and fries) and they even have dog treats and water bowls in case you don't have one. Great buttery flavor but the portion was very small. Baked potato was old and cold. Salad bar came with the meal but no one took advantage. Very basic selection but very messy. Not at all appetizing. My daughter and I ate here, after reading various reviews that presented Mackinaw City as some sort of gastronomical desert. The ambience was MUCH better than we enjoyed a day earlier at a highly rated restaurant near Munising, MI, and the food was pretty good, as well. I ordered the whitefish, which came with some french fries and a rather sad little bowl of green beans that had spent most of their post-harvest lives in a steel can. But the whitefish was tasty - better than that which I had at the aforementioned Munising/Christmas eatery - and the service was both friendly and professional. My daugher had the pasta primavera, which - as she put it - was good, but not $13 good, and came with some garlic bread. There is also a bonzai salad bar, which at about 10 sq ft is the smallest I have ever seen. My daugher returned from there with some lettuce, shredded cheese and a few delicious cherry tomatoes. We sat outside on the patio, which is a pleasant place to spend a summer evening, especially one which has a nice breeze with thunderstorms blowing in from the west. read more

This is one of the few dog friendly places in Mackinac. The back patio is quite lovely and shaded, you just have to go around the whole restaurant and peek in the door (if you have a pooch with you) so somebody can notice you want an outdoor seat. I was very happy with my burger and homemade chips (my dog enjoyed those too!). I will agree with all the other reviews that service was on the slow side, but it was very friendly and they spoiled my pooch with love which is always an A+ in my book. read more

Of all the restaurants we visted in Mackinaw, The Depot was our favorite, and we ended up having dinner there twice. On the first night there wasn't anyone around - it was later and a Sunday so most people were already gone. The other reviewer talked about dollar beer - when we were there it was Keystone Light. Good to have something that tastes like beer without all the alcohol. HA! There wasn't anything calling out to me on the menu. I really wanted some spaghetti. They had it on the kids menu, but on the adult menu it was only alfredo sauce. So, when we ordered, I asked the waitress if she could just give me an adult portion of the kids spaghetti. No problem! I appreciated that. It's not like they had to do anything different, but I like that fact that there wasn't any stink made about me wanting something that technically wasn't on the menu. The spaghetti was average in taste, but it was exactly what I was craving so it was spectacular. She gave me a huge bowl of shredded parmesan to top it off with, and it came with a slice of garlic toast. Or should I say GARLIC toast. It was sooo garlicky that it was burning my mouth a bit - but that's a good thing for me because I love garlic! I hate getting garlic bread that is merely bread with some butter on it. My husband had the sirloin smothered in whatever, and I tried some, but I didn't like it. It seemed bland to me, but he enjoyed it. On the next night I had the pork loin with mustard sauce - decent but the pork was a little overdone. Husband had the pulled pork sandwich - very tasty. We had the same waitress the second night and she was just as cheery, even though the restaurant was packed. You can sit inside or outside (covered/enclosed patio) and that Monday they had some guy singing and playing music on the patio. It's a decent place, and we'll go back again. read more

A fun place for dinner in Mackinaw City-- casual atmosphere, friendly staff, and good food. The BBQ items are definitely the highlight of the menu. We loved the baked potato stuffed with brisket and also the smoked cornish game hen. It's the perfect size and has great smokey flavor. Apparently the hashbrown casserole side (think those cheesy potatoes that your grandma makes for Sunday dinner) is really delicious-- however, it was in such high demand that they were all out when we were there for dinner! The highlight of the meal for us (randomly) were the pierogies. Someone local makes them fresh and they were REALLY good. We meant to buy some to take home with us (they sell them there) but forgot and were so disappointed. Do yourself a favor and order some for an appetizer! read more

Some staff very friendly others need to learn how to take a shower and dress for work. We did NOT eat here because of how sloppy our waitress was. She had on a Depot shirt and basketball shorts. Others were wearing sweat pants!!!!! Sweat pants and dirty knit or basketball shorts does not make your restaurant look clean at all. My waitress I believe was Nadine and she even had dirt under her fingernails. If this is how you represent Michigan it makes me sad to be a Michigander. I'm giving 1 star because i have to. But I wouldn't even drink my drink from the dirty glass it was brought to me in. Waited 45 minutes for our food with 3 adults and 3 kids under 8. We ordered taco salads, whitefish, chicken fingers, chicken tender salad and Mac and cheese. Taco salads were both served without refried beans, and when asked for some it was plopped on top of the salad. Taco salad was served with chicken instead of beef. Chicken was described as slimy and we stopped eating after my sister ate a hair in her taco salad. Chicken fingers and fish were fine. The real problem arrived when we got back to our condo and 3 of the 6 of us got REALLY sick. My daughter was up at 5 am vomiting and the other 2 shortly after we left. Wasted a day of our vacation being sick from this place. Don't eat here, seriously. read more

May have been better had it came out with everything the menu said it had. I asked for no lettuce...it came with no anything. We had waited so long already for our food, it wasn't even worth complaining and sending back. The chicken my girls ordered did not get eaten because they didn't like it ( basic chicken tenders!), my sons hamburger was "ok" and the fried whitefish didn't compare to other fish we've eaten elsewhere. What a price gouge... I get that touristy places jack up their pieces, which I'm prepared for, but this is a bit much. Got a burger which was about $13, which I figured came with fries. Nope, if you want fries (which in my experience is usually included with a burger order), add about another $3. The kicker was getting lettuce and tomato on it, add another $1... for a piece of lettuce and slice of tomato. This place charges extra for lettuce on a burger, that blew my mind. We ran out of napkins half way though the meal but didn't want to ask for more, worried we would charged for a napkin. The food was maybe a 3/10. Tasted frost bitten and bland. I'm guessing everything on the menu comes in frozen, and then is just re-heated. Big portions though. The server was nice and friendly enough, although the food came without those fries we ordered, and the apple sauce we ordered for our baby never came. I had the Chicken Alfredo. First off it was a HUGE portion, but most importantly it was wonderful!! It was obviously home made, NOT from a box. The chicken was first grilled to perfection, not dried out, but grilled with NO BATTER! The house salad was a pleasant surprise as it was a mix of green leaf, and various other leafs, not your usual iceberg. This use to be our favorite place in mackinaw. We would eat there every time we crossed the bridge. But, now. Three visits in a row have turned us off forever. 1st visit they got our order wrong and made us wait. 2nd visit, their fryer was broken and made us wait and food was cold. The last time we sat down for 20 minutes while two different servers walked by us a handful of times. As we were leaving the customers around us were dumbfounded with the bad service to us. To receive a one star from me while I'm on vacation takes tremendous effort from multiple parties within the establishment. Started to sprinkle a bit, so we went and took the kids in for lunch. We were one of the only tables there. By the time we had left, the place had filled and emptied... and we were one of the last ones to leave. Two hours for lunch. Two. Hours. We only had six meals ordered. All basic stuff... burgers, chicken fingers, etc. Waitress was not only slow, but didn't respond to our pleas for assistance on at least four different occasions. When we got to the 45 minute mark on waiting for meals, we asked for a manager. I have never met a manager lacking more people skills than this gem of a lady. We explained how multiple tables were sat after we had ORDERED, and were eating before us... and how unhappy we were. No apologies. No offer to help. Her response was to blame the server. I didn't need anything off the bill... Just somebody who sincerely cared. You would think that a place in the middle of a tourist town would excel at customer service. From my experience, they could care less about you and will never apologize for their shortcomings. The food? Overcooked. They didn't apologize... Just said they'd tell the chef. If I were you, enjoy the city, but choose to dine at a place that wants you there. This place isn't it. read more

Well went here to finish our trip off with a nice meal with the fiancé and picked this place based on the hopeful reviews. The first disappointment came when looking at the menu selection, which was.... Very bare and boring. There was talk about BBQ in the reviews but there was none on the menu other than a sandwich which sounded uninspiring. The fiancé went with the 6oz steak and I went with the 10oz New York strip, both medium And both with mash. When the order came out...wow... Two tiny, char grilled steaks, a scoop of bland mash with gravy, a Leaf of lettuce and a tomato. Now for the steak, BOTH were past well done, dry, tasteless and something we would have expected from a cheap diner. Certainly not worth the $20 yes $20!!! Dollars for mine and $14 for my fiancés. Alas we cannot just complain about the food, which once again to clarify, HORRENDOUS. The service also matched the food which is amazing considering there was enough waitresses to cover the place easily. We sat for the entire meal with empty glasses and the waitress was unwilling to remedy our terrible meal situation. read more

Ignore reviews from previous years - they are under new management this year and they kick ass!! They have a whitefish filet that costs $25 anywhere else in town for $14. The fried chicken is seriously amazing and is the same recipe that made the legendary Kenville's Restaurant of Mackinaw famous (this year one of the Kenville family members is managing the depot). I have never had better fried chicken! With the outside seating great new prices and seriously great food (try the homemade pierogis!!) they are the place to discover and enjoy in Mackinaw this summer! read more

Much like a train depot, there will be a considerable length of time as you await what you came for. Good food that is hindered by the Staff's inability to prioritize or maximize their efficiency.
