Amazing French inspired items. Great service always. Their le royal with cheese (inspired by the movie pulp fiction) is one of the best burgers in town. Classy and dressy at night. Always make a reservation if going for supper. Lunch, not so much. We dine here with friends when we need our french fix. The poutine is wonderful. Their food, everything we have had, has been great. Love that they do not charge you a corkage fee when you bring your own wine. Service is usually good. They keep your water pitcher full for the most part. Parking is lousy unless you use the ramp across the street which they do not validate for it so it will cost you more than you are expecting.The entry way is cold in the winter. If you are visting Des Moines you probably won't find a more civilized or sophisticated spot than Django. It has an old world, upscale feeling with gleaming silver serving pieces and a beautiful, dark wood bar. The service is friendly, professional, and polished. It has the best of Iowa niceness and the flair of a fine hotel restaurant: a great combination. Their bloody mary is great, with a long skewer with all kinds of goodies. They have a wonderful selection of wines by the glass. Their flatiron steak may be the best one I've had: perfectly cooked, tasty, generous. When I returned to Boston I ordered one at a good, downtown restaurant and it couldn't compare to Django's. The oysters (3 varieties) are fresh, cold (on ice), and plentiful. My husband's salad was excellent. The restaurant is large, but is divided into sections so that wherever you sit, it feels intimate. When I am in Des Moines, I try to have at least one meal at Django. They always treat me well. read more

The food was pretty good, however the service was not that great. I think the waiters were overloaded with tables and they should hire more people. Water was always at a back log, the appetizers ended up coming out at the same time as the meal...otherwise decent, the charcuterie plates were the best, Niçoise salad was not good, no salad dressing it seemed. read more

Duck breast was a tad over cooked but the flavors were spot on. Calamari was cooked to perfection and the chocolate pot au cream was heavenly. Who would have thought Des Moines would have a French bistro such as this. I couldn't decide between the halibut and the duck so I asked the chef to pick. He picked well. I am not usually a fan of French restaurants. They seem uptight and snobby. However, this place was pretty great. I had a cheese & herb omelet w/fries. How great is it that, because it is lunch time & a French cafe, you get an omelet w/fries?? My companion got the Turkey Panini with a salad and he was stuffed. When they brought the plates out, I am so glad I did not get the panini - it was my original choice. So much, he could not even finish it. I may try this again, as there were 3 or 4 things on the menu that sounded good. read more

Fantastic! I don't live in Des Moines but I come here often and Django is the best restaurant I have found in Des Moines. The food is very high quality and cooked to perfection. We had the pork chops and parmigiana crusted chicken, both were delicious. The food portions are bigger than you would expect from a quality french restaurant. The atmosphere is classic french and very comfortable. Nice wine and beer selection. Service was very efficient and friendly. A little to sophisticated for kids. Like I mentioned in my review our experience was not typical of Django and should not deter anyone from eating there. The food is top quality at a fair price. Dejango is fine dining at its best. I've been there once and I will be returning. I went on a Saturday night and I'm happy I made reservations because it was a packed house. Service was great and you can't beat the no corkage fee. I suggest bringing your own bottle of wine because the wine there is pricey. Our server chilled our wine too! I had the spinach and goat cheese macaroni gratin and it was fabulous. It's very rich but I loved it. My friend got the salmon and it was delicious. The bread was good but our butter was practically frozen. Our server packed our to go boxes and put them in a nice bag for the road. We sat by the bar which was nice because we got to see the chef making the cheese/meat plates. They looked amazing. I'll be getting one next time. Overall it was an A+++ experience and I didn't think it was crazy expensive for what we got. There isn't a dress code but everyone was dressed up. Like I said I'll be returning. read more

This place is still a Godsend. I had trouble convincing some friends of mine that we needed to do our "after-Christmas" dinner here but it worked. They were pleased as much as I. They offer a "wine stimulus prgram", basically meaning that you can bring your own and they won't charge you a corkage fee. Good thing! You have to have great wine to go with their awesome food! I love how they bring you a glass bottle of water with the caps on them like you see in Europe. Very chic! We started with a cheese flight from the cheese and charcuterie menu and the four cheeses were: Manchego El Trigal, Gouda Ewephoria, Tallegio Pasturo and Roaring 40s Blue. It was served on a wooden board with a pear salad and some assorted olives and small, chewy, crusty bread slices. We could have used more than 4 of the bread slices... We each ordered something great from the main dinner menu. I had the Steak Frites and chose the 10 oz hangar steak with fries and the bernaise sauce. It was cooked to the medium rare state I asked for. But make sure you ask for the sauce on the side otherwise they will smother your steak with so much of it, you won't be able to find the steak! It was still great though and the frites, small Parisian fries, were the bomb! Crisp and delicious. Other menu items ordered were the Roquefort Burger with a side caesar (also good)--they grind their own meat, the Django mixed grill which features a hangar steak with a slab of bacon and sausage and more frites. Last but not least, a friend had the mushroom crepes, which she enjoyed very much. For dessert, three of us went for the mango sorbet and our other friend had a creme brulee. All good stuff!! Three bottles of great red wine later, you had to wheel us out of there again. This place is decadent! We love it. We'll be back shortly!!! read more

In the few times that I've been to Django, I've had almost all positive experiences. The steak frites with the hanger steak is fantastic, and a very good deal if you ask me at $18. The burgers are ground in house, and you can tell. The Django dog is a great late night eat and a good way to get someone who isn't usually adventurous to try foie gras. The one item that was just not good was the tuna nicoise salad. At a restaurant like Django, you expect to be served high quality fish; here, however, you could tell the tuna was not very good quality. If you are ever at the fish market and see two types of tuna - one a dark purple and one almost fluorescent pink, look at the price difference. The latter was served on this salad, and it stuck out horribly. The bar is a classy place for happy hour and it's entertaining to watch the gentlemen behind the bar prepare the cheese and charcuterie plates. They were out when I was there last, but I highly recommend ordering the Pere Jacques beer. read more

Lovely place. Bouillabaisse was great, seafood crepes yum and oysters Tuesday happy hour price of $1 all evening after 4pm. The onion rings has a different pepper flake ketchup if u wanted that was very good. The chocolate ganache cake also amazing. I can't decide between 3 and 4 stars for this place. Never had dinner there--always lunch. I know nothing about french food. However, the menu strikes me as more Midwestern than French. It seemed to me like the menu was geared towards the non-adventurous eater who wanted to feel like they were being fancy and adventurous. If that makes sense. The service has always been nothing short of fantastic. Prompt, attentive and professional from start to finish. The one thing that really bothers me is their salads. When ordering a sandwich you are given the option of a side salad. Every single time my salad has come out with slightly brown, withered lettuce, drowning in dressing and what appears to be low quality, generic croutons made by Hy Vee. read more

By far one of my favorite restaurants of all time! My husband and I dine here whenever we can make it to Des Moines to visit family and friends- we even had our wedding reception dinner in their banquet space. Their staff is top notch and the food is unbelievable. The creativity and heart that goes into each dish is unmatched. I find myself traveling all over the US eating in upscale markets like Chicago, DC, etc. and I keep comparing everyone to Django. Awful they gave me food poisoning! After having the oysters and the boulliabase i got food poisoning that evening which lasted 3 days. Called later next week and the management was always conveniently absent in their ability to take the phone. Ambiance was noisy and waitress was less than par. Get the Burger I've had a mixed experience at Django, which leads me to believe you should order what they're best known for, which is their burger. On my first visit, I had the duck breast which was overcooked and tough. I did not really enjoy that dinner. The second time we went, I got the burger with the fried egg and fries. Oh so much better! Even though I order my burgers medium well, this was juicy and flavorful and one of the best burgers I've ever had. The fries are skinny and crispy, just the way I like them. They also have a great selection of local craft beers available. This meal was far better than the first and the reason I would recommend Django to my friends. read more

It was my birthday dinner! Expectations were high. It was a double date we ordered a great bottle of wine that was supposed to be a 2005 vintage, but the distributor accidentally sent a case of 2000 bottles, and the restaurant gave it to us at the 2005 vintage price! The waiter was cute and was playful! I had the onion tart and a side of the macaroni and cheese for appetizers both had their wonderful house cured bacon on it! The dinner was duck in a casserole, very yummy, but the beans were a bit hard, I'm not sure it that was how it was supposed to be. Two of my friends ordered delicious filets.
