My nails look fantastic, and I've had them now for a week and a half. I work front desk at a hotel, but lately i've been doing some housekeeping to help with the busy season. I was turned onto this place by a friend of mine. I'm so glad! Annie is great. I've had three mani/pedi's here now, and I love how consistent they've been. I've learned to rely on this place for high quality work at a great price. When you're getting the shellac, you want high quality work. The last thing you want to do is look at a bad polish job for three weeks. I was extremely impressed with the extra TLC I got from Annie once I told her I was a virgin. I had never had fake nails before and was a little nervous about the process. I had her trim them down so short you could barely tell they were there. This was about a week ago and they still look great today. She worked with such gentle speed I would recommend her to anyone. I just had my first mani/pedi ($30 + tip) by Annie and believe the reviews that say she's amazing...because she really is! The salon is very relaxing, well maintained and free from the usual "nail salon" chemical aromas. Annie and her colleague (I don't know her name) are super friendly and accomodating. Music is good; not overbearing. There are only 3 chairs (it's very small) but it feels so relaxing. I think the best thing about Doan's is that it feels so intimate unlike other assembly-line like nail salons. They soak your feet in lemon/lime infused water and then give your footsies a nice sugar scrub/soak that awaken the senses. Annie worked on my hands while another woman worked on my feet; it got me out the door on time with a spring in my step! Literally the best manicure i have ever gotten. They did a great job in a short time. I had acrylics and they neatly removed them without ripping them off. They also recommended me colors similar to the one I really like and they actually let me try them so I can choose one that looks the best on my nails. I went here because I was visiting San Fran and was looking for a great deal. $25 for a Brazilian is UNEARD OF back home and the reviews were good so I thought I'd give it a try. Tammy is FABULOUS! She is such a sweet lady and makes you feel very comfortable. Obviously for the price you're not going to get the ambiance, which I was prepared for. You go behind this shower curtain and lay on the table where she puts a fresh piece of paper over the towel to lay on. The equipment is very out-dated. The reason I am giving it 3 stars is because it took kind-of long and she got a lot of wax on me which I had never experienced any other time I've gotten waxed. It also wasn't the "cleanest" feeling place and with this type of treatment I think I would pay the extra $$ to feel like it's more sanitary. I guess the paper OVER the towel bothered me a little because you could tell the towel wasn't a fresh towel. If I go again I would request a full sheet of paper to cover the whole area I lay on and have her take all of the wax strands off that got all over me. read more

I have been going to Annie since 1998. She has quite a following of loyal clients. She is very easy to book an appt with and a very gracious person. Annie gives the most gentle pedicures- she doesn't dig into my cuticles casing me to bleed like other places. She is great with waxing ( actually I find it relaxing now!) , brows and facials. I've been coming to see Annie now for a year. I've enjoyed establishing a relationship with her and she knows my likes and needs. I do shellac nails religiously every two weeks, only one time in the year has my nail polish came off in a few days, I called Annie and let her know right away and went in for a fix, she explained it was a new nail color and it had done that to other clients. The salon is small and very personal and I've see her turn down walk-ins many times to focus on her current clientele. As far as first impressions, this salon is quaint and rather lovely. It can be challenging to find being that it is on the 8th floor of a building on Sutter, and not easily seen at street level. But after finding the salon and being seated at her single manicure table, I realize that the location is perfect. I called this morning as soon as they opened at 10, and luckily I was able to snag an appointment just a few hours later. I was seated immediately. I was in need of a complete overhaul on another salons work. During my visit I noticed that the entire salon was well kept, organized and state board clean. Everything was labeled and in it's place. And clean new files were used for my manicure. I cannot believe other salons haven't adopted this standard of cleanliness. I chose a gorgeous gelish gel polish that was exactly the color I was hoping for. There was a nice selection of gel polishes as well as opi, Essie and other premiere polish lines. After a day of flying cross-country, I decided a great way to relax and get in the trip-mindset was to get a pedi/mani that I wasn't able to do pre-vacation. I asked around and was told to check out Doan's Nails (all the great Yelp reviews backed-up the advice). I called and was able to get an appointment within a few hours. The salon is small and located in a professional building. I was relieved when I walked in and saw how clean the shop was - including active use of a sterilizer. Annie greeted me kindly and got started right on time. I decided to get the gel nails on my fingers because I like the long lasting, durable finish it provides. Annie started with the pedi and I found the foot soak to be very relaxing. She did a great job on my beat-up feet and wasn't judgmental when she saw how neglected they were, in fact, she acknowledged how rough the Northeast winter is on feet. After the relaxing pedi, we moved on to the mani, which was thorough and efficient. In all, I was there about 45 minutes to an hour, which is typical of the mani/pedi's I get at home. I went to this place thinking it was still Tammy's venue but it's not. Tammy has moved within the same building to "Nails by Tammy" on a different floor. I actually love Tammy's work. I tried this place and it was okay, until she used tweezers. I did a quality inspection once I got back to the office and there were so many stray hairs that she left behind. And the unbelievable part is she made me bleed with the tweezers. I'm so disgusted. I'm booking an appointment at the gyno and I will not be revisiting this place EVER. I was in SFO for work and liked Doan's a lot. The owner is fabulous. The services are solid. No pedicure chair (be prepared for that) and there are U.V. light bulbs in the gel light. Not a huge deal for 1 trip in a pinch but I won't be back for that reason. She also kept my nails in for quite some time, under the U.V. It's 9 days later and my nails are in pretty good shape. BUT they started peeling and chipping in under a week... after a week and half they completely started peeling off... gel nails.
