Succulent Scallops with kale and roasted potatoes - Valentine's Day menu
    Sylvia C.

Dobra Zupas was a great choice for celebrating with large family, including 6 kids, at a casual but nice dinner. We booked the upstairs private room for a 60th birthday party for 20 people at 5pm. The owner, Rebecca, was very accommodating even though we called on Wednesday for a Saturday dinner during Valentine's Day weekend. They were also very flexible and allowed us to order off the normal menu vs their set Valentine's menu. And we sent in our orders in advance to help their planning and pacing from the kitchen. I was surprised that they only sent one person for our group, which meant that dishes weren't all served at the same time, but we still were able to eat by 5:45. The best dishes from the night: - Sriracha rubbed rib eye : was perfectly seasoned and cooked - Crab risotto (1/2) with asparagus: well cooked and satisfying - 12 wings with Carolina bbq sauce : tasty, slightly sweet, with a little spice - Grilled Salmon with asparagus: cooked well, wasn't dry, and it was a filling but not too heavy meal I had the special Vday Scallops with kale & roasted potatoes - the scallops and potatoes were well cooked (not overcooked at all) with a subtle lemon aioli sauce, but the kale was slightly over salted for me.

This is a great spot for a quick bite or even a longer sit down dinner. The restaurant is actually in a craftsman style home, which further sets it apart from the run of the mill restaurant. And although it's in an area where there really are not any other restaurants, it seems just right. Service is prompt, attentive, and the server knew the menu well. We had some dietary restrictions, but didn't feel limited as the server was good about communicating with the kitchen and providing us options. The food is on the higher end, but tasted fresh, with satisfying flavors and portions. Surprisingly this place could accommodate larger parties and even has a bar with an ample selection of beers and wines. They must be making a name for themselves with craft beer too, as I saw a few people come in just to by the specialty 6-packs.

What a cute restaurant! Set in a historic house creates such an ambiance! Had the catfish po' boy. Catfish was tender and breading was crispy. Would definitely recommend! Can't wait to go back! Everything is delicious and servers were very attentive!

Wow! What a little gem in Beckley. I would have never even suspected this mom and pop restaurant existed in the heart of a residential area. The food and service here are amazing! I have not had a good blackened catfish poboy like the one I had here in a long, long time, if ever! Highly recommend this place!!

Briefly: Average. Not bad, but not stellar. I have started to travel to this area a lot for work, and love supporting local businesses and finding hidden gems. Was excited when this popped up and I read the reviews, so had reasonable, but great, expectations. I was disappointed, and my feelings match those before me that gave it an average review. You will have an average meal experience and will be okay coming back, but you'll be likely not to rave about it and hurry back. I arrived around 6:45 and was seated immediately. The restaurant was 80% full and remained so throughout my time there. It took 15 minutes for me to be acknowledged. My server, a young man, came over and he apologized for the delayed. He had brought me water and asked if I was ready to order. No welcome, introduction, or query of I had any questions. I never knew his name. I asked for a diet coke and what the soup of the day was. He told me they were all out of soup. I ordered the blackened catfish po-boy with dill sauce and fries since they were out of soup. Ten minutes later, my diet coke arrived. 30 minutes later my food arrived. It looked fine, but lacked the blackened color (brown-black) - it was more of a very light brown and the the Cajun spices were light on flavor as well. The food was fine, but not impressive enough to make me tell other people to try it (like The Dish in Daniels, WV). My server came by once to ask if all was okay. My server did bring me another diet coke, but after it was empty for a while. Both my drinks arrived 2/3 full. I rarely saw him, so it was difficult to wave him down. I also had a glass of water and I had kind of given up on good customer service. I was ready to move on. It was a unique cold day in the 30s, and I don't think the heat was on. The restaurant is in an old house, so it's probably lacking insulation. Also, it's loud. Not that I would want it, but there is no carpet to absorb sound. Because it's loud, people talk loud to hear each other. So don't go for a quiet dinner. The only thing timely that happened was when I gave my credit card to my server. He was gone and back in a flash. It threw me off and wasn't representative of any of the time leading up to it. Overall, I would come here again, but not rush to it. The food is average and the service could be better, more attentive. My server was not rude, but could be more of an extrovert since he is in a people-serving field, more attentive, and speak louder since it's a loud place. To compare, I went to the chain Outback the night before. I was tired, it was across from my hotel, and I know what to expect. My food was good, but my server was incredible. I never felt ignored and she made sure I was taken care of through and through, including keeping my drink full and updating me on the status of my food and ticket.

Fried goat cheese. The bomb. The food never disappoints.

We frequently have sours in bottles or cans but currently do not. We have a gose on draft right now the grandfather of all sours, our key lime gose but no true sour styles.

We sat outside at the picnic tables so we could watch the Pacers game without our phone being too loud on the back patio and annoying other guests and to let the dogs chew on some bones and have plenty of room to sprawl out. We split a pizza and cheese curds and each had a side salad. The salads were HUGE and super fresh, we both loved them and it was a nice balance to the pizza and cheese curds. The pizza was thin and crispy and just what we wanted after a long day on trails. And you can never go wrong with cheese curds (it was also a huge portion). We each LOVED our beers! I had a sour gose and my husband had an IPA. We only did a couple of beers there because it was cold outside and we didn't want to stay super late, but I would go back here in a heartbeat. We were going to stop in and buy some canned beers to take back to Indy with us before we left town, but ended up not being able to because they are closed on Tuesdays. I hope to see them at Total Wine & More or as a guest tap at another brewery one day so we can have them again.

They focus on using fresh, local ingredients from the Glade Road Growing farm as well as local vendors/producers. Along with their food/kitchen, Rising Silo creates their own brews and has quite the selection of beers on tap. The food menu isn't super extensive and they change it monthly based off what is in season. It consists of several wood fired pizzas, burgers, fries, bowls, and more. Ordering is very simple, you order at the kiosk up front, they will hand you a buzzer, it will go off when your food is ready, and you pick it up at the front where you ordered. This ambiance is relaxed and the space is super family-friendly. There is some indoor seating, but definitely more outdoor space available. They have outdoor games for people to enjoy as well. The service is good and friendly. When we visited, it was the weekend of graduation and was quite busy due to graduation parties, etc. There was a longer wait on the food, pizzas specifically, but this wasn't an issue. We were notified in advance on the wait on the pizza before fishing our order, which I appreciated. We snagged a table inside the barn space while we waited and enjoyed some "starters" and brews. To share with the table, we ordered the chips & salsa and the salted pretzel with pimento cheese. The chips & salsa consist of a large bowl of their house-made fresh salsa with mild jalapeños and a basket of chips. The salsa had more of a "minced" consistency with more finely diced tomatoes and was less chunky. The jalapeños added a slight kick and I appreciated the freshness of the salsa. The chips were warm when they were served to us, with a lot of salt. The salted pretzel came from a local vendor, Blacksburg Bagels, and was served with either pimento cheese or dijon mustard. We opted for the pimento and thought it paired well with the pretzel. The pretzel had a good texture, but more doughy/softer texture than a traditional pretzel. The pimento cheese had more prominent flavor from the red peppers, but was still quite flavorful. After sharing these items, we waited about 20-25 minutes for our buzzer with our pizzas! This wasn't a huge deal as it was super busy and we could see them making all the pizzas in front of us. The pizzas are roughly 12 inches, are made with homemade dough, and fired in a wood-fired oven. They are served right of the oven and are super fresh. We ended up ordering the Chicano Pie, Ramp Pesto Pie, and two pepperonis. Both the chicano and ramp pesto pie were monthly specials. The Chicano Pie included tomato sauce, burrata, chorizo, roasted corn, bell pepper, and cotija cheese. I thoroughly enjoyed this as it was very unque. The burrata was creamy and flavorful, the chorizo was smoky, and the corn & bell pepper added a slight sweetness. All these flavors paired very well together, creating a really great pie! The Ramp Pesto Pie had locally foraged ramp pesto, fresh mozzarella, and oyster mushrooms. This pie was also phenomenal with really bold flavors. The ramp added a strong element of onion, but it wasn't too overpowering. Accompanied by the slabs of mozzarella and mushrooms, this pie was also a hit! The pepperoni pie included tomato sauce, pepperoni, and silo blend of cheese. While this was a more simple pie, it certainly didn't lack any flavor. I appreciated that they use the cup n' char pepperonis. The pie had ample amounts of both cheese and pepperonis too. I absolutely loved all the pies we ordered and none of them fell short. Overall, Rising Silo is an awesome place in Blacksburg. The food is extremely good and I love that source their ingredients from local producers. Everything is so fresh and it is evident in the amount of flavor the food has. The star of our meal was easily the pizza, totally worth the longer-than-usual wait! I can easily say it is some of the best pizza I've had in Blacksburg. The char on the crust is perfect from the wood-fired oven. Their menu changes monthly, so look out for new pizza specials! The ambiance is great and really scenic. I truly cannot wait to return and try more.
