We've dined at Doc's since it opened in 1976. Over the decades they've had many entrees with which we fell in love. More recently, however, since the restaurant was sold, the menu has changed, and many of the much-loved items are gone. And since the sale, the prices have jumped skyward rather rapidly. The food we had this last week was actually okay, but rather generic in nature. I suspect Mr. Janowski is attempting to aim Doc Pierce's at a new, younger clientele. I can understand that, but even a younger clientele would have appreciated many of the entrees that he has eliminated. Overall Doc's was a disappointment. Where it was one of our regular, go-to haunts in the past, it won't be on that list now. There are too many other great places to dine in our area. read more

Atmosphere & décor has not changed from its 1976 opening date - very, very dark, outdated and not particularly clean. Two years ago I went and my food was mediocre. Went back a couple weeks ago and it was terrible. All three appetizers were sloppy - the fries were a soggy undercook glob of starch; onion rings fell apart as I picked them up; shrimp skewer was rubbery and unappealing. My entree - fettucine alfredo - was a tasteless, overcooked blob. Side of steamed broccoli was also overcooked and not seasoned = tasteless. The other diners were mostly over 60 - probably there for the nostalgia of when they were 21 and Doc's was good. Nothing could persuade me to go back. Ever. read more

I'm Spent $31 is a tip and no napkins. Shoulda funded in. Carey out is subpar, but dine is use to be excellent. My girl field had a Caesar salad. Almost 3 plus ingredients missing. No cheese. I wouldnt pick up from here. They skimp your meal and it sucks. We picked up because of Covid. I won't come back, this service sucked. No butter for my bread, missing ingredients. I don't like writing negative reviews. It had been years since last visiting Doc Pierce's. My wife reminded me that we sat and sat and sat, but no server came to take our order, so we left. That had to have been ten years ago. Prior to that, we had a good experience, but that was probably 15 years ago. So, when friends asked us to go with them, we were hesitant, but decided to give it another try. The service was good. I wasn't very hungry, so I ordered a small plate of chicken tenders. I got way more food than I expected. Crazy large serving! It tasted good, but had too much breading. Still, good. My wife and friends all ordered steaks. They were all under cooked. My wife actually sent hers back to cook more. But still, not a quality piece of meat. The atmosphere is like walking back in time. Depending on your perspective, it's either cool, or tacky. Waited at the bar for 30 minutes to have a drink while waiting only to be ignored and the general manager saying I may have to Wait for a table to get a dang drink!!!! We get being short staffed but this general manager was absolutely terrible!!!! And left the poor bartender to fend for herself while the other waitress talked crap about her asking for help!!! My first visit to Doc Pierce's. Sat outside, which I was glad that we were able to do. Bugs (gnats & ants) were horrible! Swarming around our table even before the food was brought out. When we informed the waitress, she told us that she couldn't do anything about bugs outside. Despite there being a number of other tables available, she didn't offer to move us. While I understand that bugs are, to some extent, inevitable outside, I would have hoped for a more proactive response. If they haven't sprayed, they should! Waitress also pulled down her mask at numerous points throughout her service which made me slightly anxious. I know we're all learning this new masked-normal, but would hope for stricter compliance from those directly interfacing with customers & handling food. read more

Extremely disappointed. Drinks were full of ice with three sips of my gin & tonic. The Ribeye steak was fatty and full of gristle plus overcooked. Very inattentive waitress. I saw two tables of 6 move because of cramped space and another table next to ours had to ask for their salads and when the main course was served they sent it back to be remade. The ONLY reason I am giving two stars is the blue cheese stuffed olives and french onion soup was good. Sadly will never be back. Ruined my birthday dinner. This restaurant has a bit of history behind it and is uniquely decorated with antique artifacts, such as stained glass. It's name derives from a traveling medicine man, Doctor Ray Vaughn Pierce. If you are interested in learning about the history further, look up the restaurant's website. It's quite interesting. We dined on the outdoor patio since it was such a nice day. Warm and a bit breezy. Doc Pierce's inside dining is more intimate with little lighting. My husband ordered the club sandwich and Caesar salad. He loved both. I ordered their chicken salad pita which was different and amazingly delicious. The chicken salad was creamy with golden raisins and pecans, and tucked inside a pita with melted cheese and a ring of pineapple, sprinkled with bacon. Even the steamed veggies were good. I have lived in Mishawaka for 20 years or so and from time to time have tried this place. Every time it is a disappointment. I have complained once to a manager about the food and it was taken to the kitchen never returned and then I got the bill anyway. Their food is a "NO" for me, now I am sure there are people that go there regularly and love the place so these reviews are always based on customer experiences. I drive past there every day and never go in. It's just not worth the poor customer experience, I would rather get a big mac, than to give them another chance to ruin my night. Historic, charming restaurant in downtown Mishawaka serving American standards with a focus on steaks and some fish dishes. The closest I can come to comparing this place is to a more local-flavored and rustic version of O'Charley's. The service for our large (30+ people) was good -- better than I was expecting considering our size. The standouts: side salads were fresh, huge, and had delicious homemade croutons. The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail were massive and fresh! The steaks were all the right temps for those of us who ordered them. I believe they are USDA grade or something like that -- good but not great cuts. My 6 oz steak was around 10 bucks -- a decent price IMO. Sides of mushrooms, baked potatoes, and onion rings were popular among our large party and got good marks. Last, the steak salad was excellent! I wish Doc's had salads made of romaine and/or spinach on the menu, but they don't. I don't think the food quality here is AMAZING, but the food is certainly fresh, well-cooked, and definitely solid comfort food. Just what our party needed. read more

This use to be a favorite, normally 2 or 3 times a month. Yesterday, my fathers birthday, when we arrive we felt that we were inconveniencing them to get a table for 5. Then it was forever to get drinks and order. Forever to get food, then it was cold, over cooked. It is a shame. Tried to discuss the issues with someone (it's only fair to give them a chance to explain) no one would take the time to speak to us, so instead of making a scene we left. I have been a loyal customer to Doc Pierces for over 30 years. New ownership has significantly raised prices, which with supply chain is understandable, but also reduced Portions and changes menu items without telling customers. My last dinner visit I ordered my same meal chicken strips with steak fries. Normally 4 large fresh strips that are awesome. This time 3, with 2 of the 3 being small. Ordered steak fries and got regular fries like you get at Wendy's.... When I asked the waitress if something had changed. She shared new owners felt the menu was too extensive so they went with one potion on chicken and that the new fries were better than the steak fries even though steak fries are still on the printed menu. I estimated 30 years, dinners, lunches, business meetings, I've spent close to $20,000 at doc Pierce's. It's my favorite restaurant. First time here, very cute restaurant, but very average food. I had a paper thin Porterhouse. It was cooked correctly, but not seasoned or juicy. Very bland. Key is if you need to salt and pepper and use steak sauce. All above are true. read more

I have gone there for many years with very few issues. I ordered a cheeseburger & 1/2 order of onion rings, for carry out. After waiting for I thought was long, I get charged $21.00 for that food. Excessive?!! I get home, burger was so burnt & dry I couldn't eat it without something to drink. The onion rings weren't in a container but just put in the carry out bag. Doc Pierce's is just a short walk away so we decided to order carry out. The service was prompt and courteous. The food however, was not what I was hoping! This is unfortunate since I was really hoping to LOVE our experience. Doc Pierce's has been a staple in the Mishawaka area for a long time. I ordered the Chicken Pita. My husband got some sort of combo platter with chicken, steak, and fries. I got my daughters some shrimp, baked potato, and green beans. The chicken pita was dry and the bread was oily. It actually didn't come on a pita... it came on a croissant. My husband loved the steak but the chicken was over cooked and tough. The baked potato was decent once butter and sour cream were added to the mix, but the skin was tough-- like it had been sitting for a while. This could all be due to the fact that it was a to-go order so I'm definitely not writing the place off yet. Their menu seems to have plenty of other choices I look forward to trying. First time at Doc's. The atmosphere is unique and inviting; it feels as though you've walked into a Bavarian ale house. It's nice to walk into a restaurant and feel as though you can be yourself. Very laid back at Doc's. While the atmosphere was good and the service was great, the food is where this review begins to loose a couple of stars. Doc's prides themselves in being a steak house; unfortunately while my steak was cooked perfectly, it lacked in flavor. By lacked, I suppose I mean to say it was as though it was entirely void of any seasoning. One entire star had to be dropped simply because the "fresh" fruit had a mold spot on it. I'm sure this isn't the norm, but that's something that can't be overlooked. The prices were fair for the portions and the house salad so many of my friends have raved about, lived up to the hype. First and last time here. We went on a Monday afternoon, I ordered the Polynesian chicken breast over wild rice with a house salad. Everything was a waste of money. The marinade on the chicken was nasty so I sent it back. The waitress asked if it was because of the marinade, which tells me she knew it was no good. I ordered chicken tenders thinking no way they can mess that up- but I was wrong. It tastes like fish batter- exactly like Long John Silvers! Im not sure it was cooked thoroughly because it had white goo? on the crust. The salad was a joke- full of white iceberg lettuce and I found 2 shriveled grape tomatoes. This place is 70stastic in terms of decor. Fake tiffany lamps, dark wood and poor lighting. The really only passable part of my dinner was the french onion soup. I had the chicken pita...rubbery cheese, pita bread was barely chewable and there were virtually no seasonings. The wild rice tastes like it came from an Uncle Ben's box. While visiting South Bend for the holidays, I suggested Doc Pierce's as a place for my sons and grandkids to gather for dinner. Boy, was I disappointed! The Ribeye steak was delivered almost cold. The grilled cheese was only cooked on one side. The bacon on the croissant club was undercooked to the point of being gross. The cheeseburger ($12) was smaller than a Mcdonald's Quarter Pounder. OK, the wife and I went back on the day of the great blizzard of 2011. As it was my birthday and they were the only steak house within a reasonable distance to our house when some streets were impassible, they received a second chance. I will forever go back for the French Onion Soup. I give up on the steak, apparently I am the only one who thinks I shouldn't have to ask for my steak to be seasoned, I am ok with that if I have to ask for a dash of salt and pepper to hit my steak before it hits the grill, then thats ok. Food is good-One of our favorite places but Word of warning. We used an Amex Gift card. The gift card amount was for $50 and the bill was $44,65. I told her-just run for $50 and we will tip the remainder in cash. Waitress returned and said could only run for the bill-leaving the $%.35 on the gift card.
