Came here for my birthday a couple weeks ago and I was really disappointed. We didn't have a really great waitress & when she brought me my drink, the glass was dirty and there was floaties in it. I ordered the steak and salmon with fries..the salmon was delicious..steak not so much. For being a steakhouse, it legit had no flavor. I had to douse it in A1..& you should never have to do that with a well seasoned, cooked steak. The house salad was decent, but not too enjoyable. FACADE: The restaurant is an old, original building in downtown Mishawaka. There is a nice, relatively new (within the last 2 or 3 years) outdoor seating with lights for summertime dining. The yellow Doc Lights blink, and there's something corny but cool about it. INSIDE: You first walk in a short hallway, and the decor is dark maroon and dark wood. There are several antique tiffany lamps above the tables available for purchase. There are booths, tables, bar, and upsatirs seating. There are a couple of rooms for seating too. There's some charm in there. I like it. BAR: They don't have jagermeister and red bull. Their most famous drink is the long island ice tea. They make world class long islands there. On Saturdays, they have long islands for $5.00. They have daily drink specials. TECHNOLOGY: They have free wifi, but it's kind of slow. They have a HDTV in the bar too. FOOD: They usually have a fish special on Saturdays. Their hamburgers are pretty good. One dish is called the intern, and it is a hamburger patty covered in melted cheese and chives. It's good: tried and true. Their onion rings for an appetizer are extremely good. So is their french onion soup, but if you don't like bread in your FOS or a lot of cheese, I suggest not ordering the FOS. Their best dish is oddly the chicken strips. What chicken strips/tenders are good? Seriously? OH YES!! YES YES! Their chicken is juicy, fresh, and the breading is to die for. It's great wtih Honey Mustard, BBQ, Buffalo, or just plain! Usually the dishes come with a choice of a side or a salad. SERVICE: The servers don't bother you and are usually pretty good. I've seen everything from jeans to formal gowns here, and that's the cool thing about this place, it all fits. The inside is dark and filled with stained glass, it gives off a speakeasy vibe that's both comfortable and elegant. The food is pretty standard american, but delicious. Don't overlook the house salad. I frequently just get a double order with their house dressing and amazing homemade croutons. I've enjoyed eating here for years. Love the bartender's steak and they have the biggest, juiciest fried shrimp in the area. I love the bread that comes with the meal. Just don't eat too much of it. I seriously have been so disappointed in my mail tonight. We waited over 40 minutes just have a seat which was OK because I understand during Covid not everybody can sit near one another. We sat at the bar bartender was very unfriendly she sat there and talk to one gentleman about the school the entire time. When We sat at our table It took approximately 15 minutes for the waitress to show up. We ordered our food and waited for our meals to arrive. We were given a loaf of bread and a one side of it it was hard as a hockey puck. When My steak arrived it was cold. The waitress offered to re-cook a new one and I said no because at this point I've been in the restaurant for about two hours now. The other party had a chicken dinner and it was good and hot so maybe that's why my steak was done first and sat in a window somewhere to get cold. My girlfriend and I met here for lunch. I grabbed an outdoor table on a beautiful afternoon. She had the bacon cheeseburger, I had the teriyaki charbroiled chicken salad. Hers was lovely, my salad left a little to be desired. Essentially, it was a chicken breast sliced over iceberg lettuce with a few veggies. More or less, the salad was an afterthought. I've lived in Mishawaka my whole life and this is one of the best places in the historic downtown of Mishawaka. The food is fresh and the atmosphere in this place is dark and old-fashioned. I love coming to this place for the Mushrooms and there very good steaks. They also have very good sandwiches(the Cuban is my fav). If you are just visiting town or even going to an ND football game. I'd say this place is worth the 10 min drive from the stadium. I've never been disappointed by this place. Hope that streak holds firm. read more

Good, Not Great Plenty is said about the atmosphere of the restaurant, which is a little overrated. Yes, it is dark and rustic, but in more of a generic and put-on fashion than anything uniquely inviting. The food is above average; I generally prefer the orange roughy (excellent every time), and the house salads are also very tasty. Occasionally I will order steak but am more often than not discouraged by the chefs' seeming inability to distinguish between well done and medium-well, with an affinity toward the former that appears tough to shake. All in all, a decent place to dine with an above average menu and about average service. A WORD OF CAUTION: Beware ordering take-out from Doc's. We do so regularly and our orders are botched 90% of the time, no exaggeration. From missing sides to salad mishaps, we have seen the gamut of failure resulting from apathy in this area. I had left a different review that was less than glowing. Then I was invited back to try this place out again. We, family of 3, went on a weekday night around 8:30. It wasn't busy at all and we were seated immediately. We had a very friendly waitress who was quite prompt. We ordered the yummiest appetizer of cheesy fries. If you are ever in prison, order these for your last meal... They are that good. We ordered two burgers and haddock for dinner. Burgers were pretty good, not deluxe but not shabby either. Haddock was super yummy and may become a favorite. We preferred an alcoholic coffee drink as well that was expertly made... Not too strong, not weak... Perfect. We went there today to celebrate a birthday as a party of 9. We had reservations and our table was ready when we got there. Hadn't been there in probably 15 years and nothing had changed, except the food. The quality was not as good as remembered or in other places we could have went. The Onion Rings were as always exceptional. My Chicken Ambrosia was not as described on the menu, grilled chicken and rice, chicken was dry. 2 steaks ordered were mostly tough. Seafood chowder was just ok, from description it should have wowed us. Service was fine but food was definitely not up to the levels of other places on Grape Road or Main St. area. Nice ambiance but my experience left quite a bit to be desired. First was sat at a bar booth (half table with a board on the other side) and told the tables had a 20 minute wait (this place had at least 10 open tables and they were never filled while we were there). Ordered the 'famous onion rings' which were cut into huge 1/3 onion size pieces and served with a heavy side of grease. The batter is exactly the same as the batter used on fish at long john silvers...if thats your thing, order them, but personally I'm not a fan of the intestinal destruction. My entre was a bacon cheeseburger that came without bacon. It was dry and flavorless and served on a bun anyone could by at a grocery store (stale, and the exact same you would buy in a standard 8 pack at the store). I ordered a house salad for a side and it consisted of bagged lettuce, bagged shredded cheese, hormel bacon bits, and two cherry tomatoes to try and trick me into thinking it wasn't prepared by Dole Foods. NOW....my finance ordered the chicken pita. This was served with a mayonnaise covered plastic bar code from some prepackaged items. yum. Maybe some consider that a delicacy, but personally it doesn't quite fit our american palate. I am somewhat new to this so a picture of this will be added to the review or overall review page of this restaurant. We went with my parents, after not going there for many years, but had great memories of great food and service. We arrived at 5:30, ordered drinks and appetizers, which arrived very tasty and timely. While waiting for the main course, we had great conversation, but when we started to notice it was now after 7, and 2 tables around us had been served and were looking at their bills to pay, we realized we had been there 1 1/2 hrs and still no main entree. The table next to us didn't get what they ordered exactly (they said got rice and not mushrooms), and the other table had waited the entire meal for the baked potato to arrive, which it never did, and they left. We finally caught the waitress rushing by to ask her what was going on with our food, and she said two main cooks didn't show up and the appetizer cooks were trying to make the dinners. We waited some more, and after another 15 or so minutes decided to just pay for what we ate and drank and cut our losses. The manager was there and went to check on our order. She also said she would take care of our meal and it wouldn't cost us anything. She said our order was ready, so we asked for it to go. In the meantime, the manager also gave us gift cards to come back and try them again. We waited another 10 minutes and, with still no food, were walking out the door when it was brought to us. So, about 2 hrs later, only one drink and appetizers, entrees to go, free gift cards and meals, we left. This was probably the worst restaurant experience I've had. Even though it was free and we now have gift cards to return, I would give the restaurant time to get its act together. Was disappointed in the waitress for not communicating to us or showing concern for our wait, whether it was out of her control or not. Kudos to the manager for trying to make an unpleasant situation right. The food was okay once we got home. Baked potatoes were probably yesterday's left-over ones, and steak was flavorful, although overdone. The other two meals were good. With Riverwalk improvements and more traffic downtown, this restaurant could really do well, once they get the right employees in there with the right training. 5 months later we returned with our $75 gift cards on a Friday night and had a great experience! Wife and I ate here this evening. Nothing stood out, hence the reason for the 2 stars. The ambiance was heightened because we ate outside on a gorgeous night. The food was overpriced for what you got. I ordered the shrimp special. The sauce overpowers the shrimp, which was disappointing because the shrimp was cooked well. My wife ordered the chicken/steak combo. She ordered her steak medium and it came medium well, not a deal breaker if the steak was delicious. It was underwhelming and not seasoned at all. So this past weekend was another "No Broads Weekend" my best friend/co-conspirator are prone to having. Plus, he wanted to belatedly celebrate my birthday with me, so he took me out to dinner once I got there. The South Bend/Mishawaka area is overrun with chain restaurants and sorely lacking in much local flavor. So when he recommended we do something a bit special and head to this Mishawaka institution, I was all for it. It lived up to expectations. Nothing either of us ate was even remotely healthy... that doesn't really seem like this place's style. But if you've got an unhealthy but delicious meal allotment lined up, you'd be pleased. We started with their onion rings, which were great not only for their thick batter, but for the fact the onion part actually tasted like an onion, rather than a greasy blob. That's not to say it wasn't greasy, it was... just in a good way. I want an onion ring to taste like an onion, not the inside of a fryer. I then kept the fried food game rolling with some chicken strips. They were among the best I'd ever had (and I should know). Big, juicy, thick chunks of chicken in an incredibly flavorful breading. With a little honey mustard they were just excellent. The service was good, but inconsistent. Our waitress started out a little bit inattentive, but then as things got busier, she somewhat paradoxically got more and more on top of things. But still, she was friendly enough and kept the whole meal being an overall enjoyable experience. I definitely tend to knock South Bend for its over-reliance on chains and such, so I have to give a nice independent place like this a lot of credit. read more

Just awesome. My boyfriend and I are from out of town and stopped here to have some lunch and kill some time. He had the ribeye and I had the top sirloin. Both were cooked to perfection and very tasty. They have very good drink specials throughout the week (it's not just beer!) Our server was very good and knowledgable about the dishes. A great steak place with great prices. The ambience makes for a great dining experience. Beautiful dark woodwork and Tiffany lamps make it a great place for a date night dinner. Be sure to get an appetizer: Huge jumbo shrimp in the shrimp cocktail! They give you a mini loaf of bread with your meal which is always moist. The house salad was crisp and fresh. I had the 9oz top silrloin, medium well which was close to perfect. The edges were a little burnt but didn't ruin the experience. The steamed vegetables were somewhat flavorless. Staff is very friendly. Food wasn't quite up to par. Two out of three of our steaks were under cooked and had no flavor whatsoever, not even a hint of salt and pepper! My husbands shrimp was over cooked and rubbery. My steamed veggies were over cooked to the point of being mush. We go there quite often and everytime they act like they have never even seen you before. A good manager should recognize his returning customers! To sit outside you have to go into the restaurant and then they take you back outside, seems like there should be a hostess out there during the busy time. We walked in and the hostess didn't say hi or anything just looked at us. we sat outside, I ordered a specialty drink off their menu, it was supposed to be a type of margarita and it was so strong I couldn't even drink it. i asked the waitress for a beer because it was so bad, she never apologized or took if off the bill. Food is average, just depends on who is cooking I guess. The place could really use some updating , new carpet. its very dark in there and just not very clean. read more

I heard great reviews about this place, so I guess my expectations were a bit high. My husband and I went during the summer and sat outside. I like the location, being in downtown and all. But when it came down to the food, I was not impressed. We both ordered steak and was surprised that when the food came out, it was kind of tiny. My friend and I grew up in Mishawaka (two 1982 Penn Graduates). Came back into town and wanted to have dinner at Doc Pierce's - haven't eaten there in over 30 years! We made reservations for a Saturday night at 7:00pm. Our "reserved" table was the one farthest from the front door - actually located as close as possible to the washrooms and back door exit. Our waitress served our food and we never heard back from her again. Except when we had to flag her down and ask for our check. My friend ordered a steak medium well - it came out to the table nearly moo-ing. We never were never asked if we needed anything, nor were we thanked for dining there. Waitress said she had been there for 17 years and her and manager were having conversations and joking a little too loud for my taste. So badly wanted to enjoy coming here. Have not come here in over 20 years. Heard mixed reviews. Came on a Sunday in October, sat outside. My wife and I, our son, his wife. Forgot how extremely dark it is inside the restaurant. Was glad outdoors was an option. We had a Rueben sandwich, pulled pork, French dip & a jalapeño burger. And a very uninspired waitress. It was as if it bothered her to wait on us. So Docs does a $4.99 burger on Mondays. They ought to offer it at all times for $4.99. Nothing much to speak of. The Rueben, I've had better at Arbys. Maybe 3 slices of meat. Could not taste the the sauerkraut. And the Rye bread did not get my attention. This sandwich made right is glorious. Epic fail. The French dip, again, go to Arbys. The pulled pork bbq, average at best. Our first choice for grabbing dinner was Diner on 12th. They're closed Sunday. (And they are awesome). In keeping it local, this was plan B. Our experience is not one that will ever bring us back. It's sad because back in the '70's & early '80's, this place was hopping. I know that was a long time ago. This restaurant has been my favorite in the South Bend area for over 30 years. Every time I return home to Indiana, I make it a point to go back to Doc's. The service is great, and the food is amazing! The salad course is awesome (super yummy house-made croutons), bread fresh-baked and warm, and the "Doc's Saloon" steak is out of this world. This is the ONLY steak I order when eating out (b/c nothing out ever really matches what my Dad could grill). The french onion soup is bubbly and delicious, and the strawberry milkshakes with real strawberries are amazing (though I rarely have room for one). Can't wait for my next trip! read more

Ducked in for a snack the other day after hearing about it for ages. Place is vintage in the way of 'hasnt been updated in decades'; it is not without its charm though. The tiny booths are worth sitting in just for the novelty (one sided booths? I kind of love it). On tap beer list was surprisingly tiny and bland, but then again the place has more a family feel than burger and beer joint feel. Some fun cocktails on the menu though. We stayed for some appetizers that were hot and fresh and tasty. If I worked in downtown Mishawaka, I'd probably be there often but if you're in the general SB area there are lots of other options. read more
