Good meats! The space at Doc's is a little cramped--- and too hot in summer and too cold in winter as a result. In addition, it is not uncommon for them to be sold out of one or more meats. Those are the downsides. The meats are more flavorful than any other BBQ joint in the area. The sides are also tasty, not afterthoughts straight off the Sysco truck like at so many other places. When I want BBQ, I care about flavor, so Doc's is always on my go-to list. Some family members are more interested in ambiance and comfortable seating, which is the only reason we are not here more regularly. read more

Pulled pork nachos were outstanding. Right amount of cheese, pork, chili and chips. The pulled pork was juicy with lots of flavor. The burnt ends were the best I have ever had...hands down, no additional sauce needed. This might be the best BBQ in the area and in a strip mall too! I highly recommend the Burnt ends, they are amazing, the macaroni and cheese might be in the top 2 of the best I've ever had and the baked bean, fries we super too! We walked into a lunch deal with 2 Huge Pork sandwiches and 2 fries for $10, WOW! i only wish we would have bought more!!! I wish you had a location in Terre Haute IN! I finally tried this place yesterday after hearing so many great things. I went in with pretty high expectations and they did not disappoint! I tried a 1/2 order of the pulled chicken nachos (which was plenty!), baked beans and their corn casserole. Everything was delicious, however I wish I hadn't tried the baked beans because now all future baked beans will be sub-par to these. They had brisket in them and were full of flavor. My boyfriend got the Doc's Signature sandwich and couldn't stop raving about it. The service was very friendly and Doc came to our table to see how everything was. I don't get why people are saying the layout/payment is odd. It's very similar to other BBQ places in Stl (Pappys, Sugarfire) where you pay first and sit at picnic style tables. This place was even nicer looking than most. We live 35 minutes away from Doc's, and 5 minutes away from Sugarfire. We will definitely be taking the longer drive to try more of this amazing food! My husband and I are a always looking for good BBQ (he is a certified BBQ judge) we found excellent food here! I orders the burnt ends, corn casserole, and sweet potato fries. My husband ordered the pulled pork, baked beans, and creamy coleslaw. Everything was very yummy. One of my biggest complaints when we go to BBQ joints is that often the meat is good or even great but the sides seriously lack in flavor. This was not the case at Doc's the sides here were very well done standard sides. The sauces were all very tastey. They use Blues Hog BBQ sauce as part of their personal recipes which my hubby and I enjoyed as this is the only sauce we use at home. We ended up trying a piece of the pecan pie made by Doc's wife, let me just say I like pecan pie it is ok but the pecan pie at Doc's is Amazing! I often feel that pecan pie is too sweet. This wonderful pie was just sweet enough you can actually taste the pecans and the crust is light and flaky. The service was great. Our foodcame out quite quickly. The young ladies bringing our food and bussing tables were very friendly and helpful. We will certainly be back when we are in town! read more

The girl who took our order seemed annoyed at us even being there, then we added questions as first time patrons, and she really got impatient and sarcastic. The service, unfortunately, was a shame of a drawback because the food was actually awesome. As a southerner transplant to IL, they got the pulled pork and cole slaw totally right, but the whole experience was overshadowed by sarcastic, ungrateful attitude from the cashier. read more

Doc's food was FANTASTIC!!! It was so tasty we could have eaten everything without the extra sauce provided. There was a problem with how our order was entered, and they not only made it right, but delivered the corrected order within 15 minutes!!! That made ALL the difference for our dinner party!! Small place but good food. Staff seemed to just be going through the motions, you work for tips, you should at least smile and try to feign customer service. I will say I was a little disappointed in the amount of pork I got on my nachos. I estimate I got enough meat to cover maybe 50% of the chips I got. I didn't come there for chips and cheese. The bacon bourbon pecan cheesecake was fabulous as was the corn casserole. Their brisket and pork were also very good, I just wish the meals had come with a bit more of it. I came from Memphis where my #1 BBQ place never left you wanting for more meat and still didn't empty your wallet. read more

This is definitely my favorite bbq restaurant in Illinois side of the river. They have the best pork steak I've had in my life. I've also had the burnt ends, brisket, and nachos. I have been eating at Doc's weekly since it first opened. I was very impressed with their options but now it seems like they are serving the same thing over and over again. I would like to see some changes on the menu that provides a little more variety with the sides. I love the pies, when they are available, but they seem to have dropped off as of late. Often times there are no pie selections. The wait staff is friendly but it seems like the owner(s) attitude has somewhat changed. I am no expert but you have to appreciate the patrons who fill your dining room if you want to continue to be successful. All in all, the food is good and I will continue to eat at Doc's. My comments are meant to be helpful as I hope that Doc's Smokehouse continues to provide bbq to the Edwardsville area. read more

Went to Doc's today for lunch with hubby after hearing good things. When you go in, it's not clear that you have to walk toward the back to place your order, so we had to ask if we should seat ourselves. Once we were directed to the order area, we had about 15 seconds to try to read the menu (handwritten, hard to read) before someone was asking for our order. I had the 2-meat entree with brisket, turkey, green beans and mac & cheese. Hubby had the brisket with fries and cole slaw, plus a drink. It came to $28 and change. Their POS system prompts you to leave a tip (all they do is bring a drink and put food on the table - don't expect a refill or bussing) and suggests percentages. I added a tip (way too much for what they do) and we sat down. Our food came very quickly. The portions here are *extremely* small for the prices they charge. My plate had 3 thin slices of brisket, maybe 1.5 x 2.5 inches across and two small lunch meat-sized turkey slices. There was about 1/2 cup of green beans, a little scoop of mac & cheese and a roll. Hubby's portions were similar. Honestly, I was glad the portions were small because the food was terrible. The brisket was dry, tough, and tasted only of salt and smoke. The green beans have no obvious seasoning and the mac & cheese is disgusting. It's the color of Kraft, tastes of powdered cheese, and is thick and gloppy. Two bites and I pushed it to the side. Also, nothing was heated properly. The turkey seemed ok, but it was cut so thin it was hard to get a bite big enough to really taste. Hubby said the cole slaw wasn't very good and the fries were under-seasoned. He also disliked the brisket. The sauces were nasty. The meat was so dry I tried all three. All three were bland, watery, and had a weird acrid flavor. Very unpleasant. It was pretty quiet when we were there, but the floors were very dirty and they had no silverware so gave us plastic. I could go next door to Los Tres Amigos and get real cutlery, a clean restaurant, and decent food for a lot less. I certainly wouldn't leave hungry (and thirsty - staff disappeared so no hope of a refill) like I did at this place. 4 thumbs down. read more

I've been to Doc's now twice and both times have just been awesome. It has been so good in fact that I felt like I needed to leave this review after reading the single bad review. Clearly by the other reviews, no one else has had this experience. I though ordering was simple...there is a blatant sign that says "Order Here". Yes the menu is handwritten but if you know how to read it shouldn't be an issue.... The first time I went, I went for lunch and got the pulled pork sandwich with fries and it was great! The portion was plentiful and I thought the sauces were awesome. They have a sweet sauce, hot and spicy, and one that is a vinegar base (my favorite). The portion of pulled pork was the same if not more than Pappy's which is now my second favorite place to get BBQ in the metro area because Doc's now has my vote hands down. I went the second time and got a dinner entrée of Ribs that comes with two sides. These ribs are amazing! They are cooked perfectly and have some kind of glaze that just sets the flavor off. The sides I got were corn casserole and the smokehouse fries. The corn casserole was also terrific. There's not many people that have side dishes that are this kind of quality. We also got a half-order of the Smokehouse Nachos. These were just amazing. You have your choice of pulled pork, chicken, or beef. I went with the pulled pork and they just blew my mind. The portion of pulled pork was plenty, it has beans, tons of cheese sauce, and a squirt of BBQ sauce (the sweet I think). I would highly recommend starting with these as an appetizer or heck just getting them as your meal! Everyone I was with thoroughly enjoyed their orders as well. I tried the brisket and it was unbelievable. This was probably the best brisket I have ever tried hands down. To the reviewer that said the meat was dry...you have to be out of your mind. This brisket is so tender it literally falls apart and melts in your mouth. All in all, this place looks like it's doing great and I'm not surprised. I would highly recommend going and seeing for yourself. I didn't experience anything like the other reviewer said with dirtiness, lack of service, etc. Definitely see for yourself..this other reviewer also compared a BBQ restaurant to a Mexican place....that doesn't even make sense... 5 thumbs up! read more

Great BBQ at a great price! All of the food tastes amazing! They have friendly staff who take great care of you whether it's dine in or carry out. Doc's has changed locations but has the same delicious food and fast, friendly service. It's not far from the former spot, and you can still smell that smokey bbq goodness from the parking lot. The dining area has at least doubled in size, and the new layout allows for quick counter service. There is even a separate entrance for carryout and catering orders. You can't go wrong with pulled pork, brisket, burnt ends, mac 'n' cheese, green beans and potato salad. The nachos are wonderful too...Heck, the entire menu is great. This is definitely my bbq go-to spot. God bless Doc and his staff! read more

I've been twice in the last week, bringing the whole family the second time. IMO, the nachos here are fantastic, I thought they were well portioned, and the half order is easily enough for 2. I've tried the pork, brisket, and turkey. Brisket was better the first time, but still good the second. Turkey was quite good. Sides are decent. Corn casserole is good, and the baked beans were tasty. Place was clean, people were friendly. I thought it was appropriately priced, maybe slightly high. I've read the portion complaints...I'm a fat kid, and I wasn't able to finish the two meat platter either time. I guess some people expect the platter to be overflowing. I'd rather have a regular amount of quality, than a ton of garbage. Would recommend, and we will frequent. read more

I have eaten here 3 times now. The only complaint I have about the service is that it is slow. It is friendly, though. The only item I won't bother to order again is ribs. I think they use spare ribs....not much meat and lots of fat. Disappointing because I love good ribs. Everything else I've had has been good, but I would like more menu selections and would love to have great BBQ like we can get in St. Louis and Kansas City. read more

Had the Doc's Signature Sandwich and the Corn Casserole; both were great. The brisket was well cooked and had a lot of flavor. I liked all the sauces on the table so just kept switching it up every few bites. The portions aren't huge, but they're appropriate for the price and a normal meal. Just visited the recently relocated Docs in Edwardsville. There is much more seating space, and a separate entrance for take out orders. Two things have not changed, the fast friendly service, and the AMAZING food. I enjoyed the brisket sandwich with a side of corn casserole. Looking forward to eating here again soon! read more

I'm a brisket fan...I want it sliced, smokey, with a visible smoke ring, caramelized edge, not too dry, not too wet. At Doc's, they hit on the sliced, but nothing else. There was nothing, to include the flavor, that indicated this brisket was smoked. There was absolutely no smoke edge on the brisket and the consistency was soggy and chewy, as if it had been steeping in a pan of water. The sweet potato fries were quite good and generously sized. Service was OK with counter ordering and delivery to the table, but was never offered a refill on the iced tea. Would love to have a topnotch BBQ place in Edwardsville/Glen Carbon.
