I first started cheating on my regular bakeries with Dog Tag in late March 2021. The Cherry Blossom Custard Tart was the seasonal, for obvious reasons. It was masterfully presented, so I could not resist it. It was almost too pretty to eat *cackles insanely at the idea of something ACTUALLY too pretty to eat*, but was also one of the most delicate and complex pastries I have ever eaten and quickly had me thinking of reasons why I needed to go to Georgetown. I was leery of their carrot cake, as I like mine denser and with chunks of nuts and things, but it too became something that I was happy to see when there. I went today, thinking that I needed to try something new. The fruit and seed bar was SO much better than I had anticipated. My only regret with that one is that I only got one. I have not tried the rest of my foraging; a mini Dutch apple pie (not my favorite but, again, the presentation drew me in), an Old Bay biscuit (which I have passed up in the past but decided would likely be just the thing for some salmon salad I am plotting for some leftover salmon), and 2 scones, cheddar/ham and lemon poppyseed (I have had their delicious scones before, just not in these two flavors). Great...now...I feel hungry again...*eyes bags of delicious goodness greedily* Great job! A world class bakery with a mission. This bakery's current seasonal cake is the cherry-lime cake (buttercream frosting) with flecks of fresh lime in the batter. Just a delightful place with delightful staff and people. My daughter suggested we start our visit to Georgetown with a visit here for coffee and a pastry. From the time we entered we knew this was a great choice. Terrific seating, a welcoming case displaying an excellent assortment of scones, cakes and breakfast sandwiches made for easy choices. We came in the weekend before the remodel that was posted. The staff is friendly and asked what we were looking for (kind of felt like a breakfast bar). The coffee I had was amazing on a nice chilly day with a little rain. She ordered a egg cheese and ham croissant, which I had a bite and wish I had ordered one as well. It was fresh and well baked. I came here after searching yelp for a breakfast place and after reading about it how could I not visit with so many vets in my family. This café is simply too cute and delicious! It's tucked far enough away from M street to offer a delightful respite yet not so far as to be prohibitive to walk to while out shopping. The decor is unpretentious and welcoming. As soon as you walk in, there's a display case featuring an array of baked goods -- I had the basil and mint cake with blueberry buttercream frosting. The combination was delightfully refreshing for a hot day and paired perfectly with the iced coffee (nitro cold brew with notes of caramel). Price-wise, it's very much in keeping with the rest of the area. Wifi is free, but you will need a code from one of the servers (it's limited to 30 minutes, but its lightning fast).100% will be back! read more

I've always wanted to try this place, but for some reason, each time I've been in the area, I've always managed to get there exactly two minutes after it closes. My boyfriend and I had been walking around in the oppressive DC humidity for the better part of an hour (DCists, you know what I'm talking about), and when he suggested that we stop somewhere with air conditioning for a cup of coffee, I said, "WAIT! I KNOW WHERE WE CAN TRY!" I'm happy to say that it was open this time, and that it did not disappoint. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a couple of delightfully peppy girls who immediately gave us some pastry and drink suggestions. I ordered an iced coffee, while my boyfriend ordered a lemonade. Maybe it was because we were on the verge of suffering from a heat stroke, but that was one of the best lemonades I have ever had. My boyfriend had drunk the rest of it before I could get in for a second sip, but I'll be back for more. We also split a pulled pork bagel sandwich, and, although they couldn't heat it up (to my knowledge), it was quite delicious and surprisingly refreshing. I didn't think pulled pork could be refreshing, but apparently it can. In addition to having great food and customer service, the interior had a lovely vibe and did a great job of explaining its mission (which, if you're not already familiar, is to help support veterans who have recently embarked on establishing local businesses). The decor is fitting but not too flashy, and they have a number of tables set aside for non-laptop users who are there to chat or read a book. Before we left, I went back up for a slice of Oreo Cream Pie (I mean, she did suggest it, and it's for a good cause, right...?). Solid decision. For most people, it would be a perfect size to split, but I don't split pie, so that doesn't apply to me. Overall, Dog Tag hit home on all fronts. As a student, for me the one letdown was their 30 minute wifi voucher. They had laptop free tables, which I found amusing. Felt like I wasn't wanted there. Had to relocate to Peet's to study. It's always great to eat at restaurants or bakeries that have cool missions or visions. Dog tag bakery has an EXCELLENT fellowship program I'd recommend reading about if you stop in. We had lunch here one weekend. It wasn't too busy but booths were reserved for patrons who didn't have laptops, which was great. I got the roast beef and blue cheese sandwich on a brioche. The sandwich portion was huge and the meat and cheese was fresh and made the sandwich excellent. It came with a bag of kettle chips. They have cucumber and lemon water available. My wife and I split a chocolate chip cookie. They were delicious. It was a great lunch spot , delicious sandwiches, honest mission, highly recommend. read more

Great find. I've added this to my short list of places to eat in DC. I searched Yelp for a place to meet near Georgetown. When I saw Dog Tag Bakery, I immediately thought that this was an establishment for dog treats and that Yelp had mis-categorized the listing. We're talking Georgetown after all. After reading the summary, I decided to give it a try. It wasn't until I stepped into the restaurant did I realize its affiliation with veterans...thus the Dog Tag reference. What a great mission. I had some type of pastry filled with meat and cheese (I know that's not very helpful but that's what I get for waiting 3 days before writing a review) and an apple pie. They asked if I wanted either one heated and I declined. They both tasted great but in hindsight, I should have had them heated. Nice, clean restaurant. Good food at reasonable prices. Great cause. Awesome mission behind this place and great to see it expanding into DC.Stopped in today and tried the carrot cake. Was pleasantly surprised to hear that it was nut free! At $4.75 a slice it's a decent value for a small place in Georgetown. I like being able to see back into the bakery itself from the front counter. Adds a great touch. Loved the large chunks of carrot in the cake. The cake itself was fairly moist and dense. The frosting was a little disappointing. While the taste was a solid sweet cream cheese I felt that the consistency was too thick, and often took some additional cutting and chewing after the cake broke down. I'd be open to trying more from Dog Tag however as I was intrigued by many of their products, especially their berry fun-fetti cake. read more

I love everything about this bakery from the clean decor to their pastries to their mission statement. They hire disabled veterans to bake all of the amazing desserts. What's not to love?! Great customer service and clean tables. I had the pear & ginger tart. The crust was buttery & flaky - just perfect. Complemented well with the sweetness of the pear. You can hardly taste the ginger as it's not overpowering, so I highly recommend trying it. Only downside would be the matcha latte. Whenever I can, I try to eat / purchase at establishments that donate to a cause. It's easier to justify my six cups of coffee a day, when I know money is being donated elsewhere. Well, Dog Tag Bakery does just this, with their veteran affiliation. I have to admit that I walked by this bakery at least a dozen times before finally stopping for a quick coffee. I was under the impression that it was legitimately for dogs. Come to find out, its not, and they actually have really great coffee. Not only is the coffee good, but the atmosphere is as well. There were not many people when I was there, so it was quiet and peaceful. Just what I like when I am catching up on work! The only issue I had with the bakery was the fact that you only receive a half hour of wifi, and then you must purchase another item to receive another half hour. Mind you, they do not tell you this until after you purchase your food. I happened to purchase a water, as well as a coffee. When they told me about the wifi situation post-purchase, I asked, "Well I should have just purchased these separately then, right?" The young women was very confused by my question, so I simply sat down, as I only needed to be there for 45 minutes anyways. So great coffee and great atmosphere - just don't plan on parking yourself there for an afternoon if you are working. read more
