Unfortunately, Doj Khao do not take reservations. We visited on a Friday night and the place was packed. This was my second time to try Dok Khao. The first time was during Covid. The wait was about 30-40 minutes until we got seated. Our server was good and took our drink orders right away. We all liked the food that we ordered. I ordered the red curry with tofu, spice level 4. I like that our waitress asked us the level of spice. My sister got the Crybaby, which is a noodle dish and so delicious. For dessert, we got the mango sticky rice. I love mango sticky rice so I had no complaints except for the mango wasn't in season and on the not so ripe side. The restaurant is large and open with a lot of decorations from Thailand. All of the tables inside the restaurant were filled, which is nice to see. read more

This place is perfect for a date night. It is a quaint spot with a little fountain, birdcage and floral details. I love the hues of green and brown. On each of our visits we have ordered just about the same thing, since we enjoy it so much. I do plan to explore the menu more but as my husband said "Since it isn't broken why fix it?". Our favorites are definitely the drunken noodles and pineapple fried rice. The pineapple friend rice for me marries a lot of texture with flavor between the pineapple chunks, cashews, raisins, chicken & shrimp (I am definitely a foodie who likes a variety in texture.). like that they pack flavor and you can ask to adjust the heat levels, since we like a little extra kick to our dishes. The service is always great. I feel like all servers are attentive, patient and friendly even at their busiest of times which is a huge prop to them! Listen, I have been here multiple times and would come again. The first time I ordered "their version" of Pad Thai and didn't like it at all. This time my friend and I went. He ordered some lamb dish and said it was trash. I ordered the Street Noodles and I'm still thinking about them. They were SO good! The drinks were just drinks. Everyone really seems to like this place, even my family members and I'm like am I the odd one out here? You see it has a very good social media presence; super positive articles about dok khao going around etc... and while they attempt to create a genuine Thai experience here it does not resemble the food or ambiance from when I lived in Thailand. I don't know if they aren't putting enough MSG in things or too much fish/oyster sauce in the food. Speaking of which if you're gonna play the vegetarian card, I don't think you'll have the best experience here, and you should blissfully roll with don't ask just eat mentality. You'll be happier that way. Example, I've been there two completely different times, ordering for example pad Thai for family members who are vegetarian and even when explicitly explaining vegetarian concepts it still shows up with something that looks like imitation crab (imitation or not it's still going to be meat whether it's crab meat or fish meat). Plus, most Thai places aren't really going to be able to roll out a good Thai green curry for instance without some type of non-vegetarian stuff n' things as the core ingredients. But yeah, that was a total side note; if that's not a concern of yours you will most likely enjoy this place a lot better. Also a note about ambiance; while trendy and hip, it does not speak Thailand to me, unless you're like in the Thong Lor/Ekkamai areas of Bangkok. For the average american you will throughly enjoy this place and feel like it's the most luxurious Thai food experience you've ever had. I have nothing but great things to say about Dok Khao. Everything I've tried has been absolutely amazing. A few of my favorite dishes are...garden delight with chicken, drunken noodles, the jacketed shrimp, and the pad ka pow (spicy). There are so many other dishes I can't wait to try. Everything that comes out of their kitchen look amazing. The service here is top notch. They are on it. Super friendly and extremely efficient. It gets really busy in here, especially weekends, so it helps that they are on top of the service. I'm not sure if they do reservations, so you may want to call to check for availability prior to trying to get in there on a Friday or Saturday evening. The vibe is cute and trendy. The food, unfortunately, didn't live up to the atmosphere. The flavors were decent, but everything felt way too mild, even after asking for extra spice. Isn't Thai food supposed to bring the heat? Portions were also pretty small for the price, which left me feeling like I didn't quite get my money's worth. For such a visually appealing space, the lack of cleanliness was really noticeable. Our group of six ordered drinks, and two had to be returned due to poor taste. I ordered the lychee drink, which I didn't return, but the lychee fruit was clearly old and gray--not fresh at all. I order this drink often at other restaurants and know what it should taste and look like. The flavor was just okay, but the lack of freshness was off-putting. We did enjoy the curry puff appetizer--it was the highlight of the visit. Unfortunately, most of the food and drinks felt overpriced for what we received. This place is packed! The decor is very stylish and modern. You can tell a lot of people dig it. The customers were quite diverse even though all the waitresses seemed to be Thai. The service was quite fast even if it was packed to the fullest. The food was 5/5 in terms of freshness and quality ingredients. As usual, Thai food can be a bit too sweet for me but it's not just this restaurant. That's just Thai food. The pad thai noodles were perfectly cooked. They were sticky the right way - not too dry or not too soft. The lychee duck curry was an interesting combination I never had. I don't usually eat Thai curries but that was quite good. Kapow beef was spiced really well. The big, crispy flounder stole the show. It was so fresh and went well with the white rice. I felt the sauces can be a bit more potent. It was a bit weak for me. The mango milk tea I had was also meh. That's just me nitpicking but overall this place is really good. I'd definitely be coming back for sure. If you don't mind sweet food, I recommend it! I think I have finally found my favorite Thai place. This place is situated on the first floor of buildings that house modern apartments above and there's a gorgeous little park out front where kids play and parents relax. Lots to f solos here too. You could actually eat outside. It reminds me a little if Ardmore's Suburban Square. It is situated in a nice area only about a 10 minute walk to Merriweather Post Pavilion aka known as the Merriweather. district. I found easy parking only about 100 steps away on a Sunday. What a beautiful place to dine in with beautiful ceilings and waterfalls. Don't recall what I got the first time here but I did enjoy it. Today I had to Tom yum soup which was delish. And, snooze- I had the Pad Thai. Yea my ordering was boring today but so loved this place again that I plan to make a visit each time I am in this area. read more

Tasty Thai food. We visited Dok Khao Thai Eatery on a Saturday night, and it was about a 30-minute wait to get a table for two. The restaurant has plenty of greenery, green booths, wood tables, and cheap wood chairs. There were also a number of inflatable sea creatures and beach-themed decorations hanging from the ceiling that may have been seasonal. I tried the sip like a star to drink, the crab rangoon as a starter, and the pad cellophane as a main. The sip like a star was served in a fun golden ball and was a decent fruity drink. The crab rangoon was delicious with a thin crispy crust and a scrumptious filling. The pad cellophane had a tasty sauce and tofu was nice and chewy. I did think the ball of plain sticky rice was a bit unnecessary since the noodles absorbed most of the sauce. Overall, I had a good experience at Dok Khao Thai Eatery and would recommend them for Thai food in Columbia. read more

First time eating here, on a Friday evening. The food was good but I did expect it to be spicy since it's Thai but it wasn't and there weren't spice levels to choose from. Prices are a bit high compared to portion sizes especially for the desserts and drinks. The alcoholic drinks at Blackwall down the street are cheaper even compared to some of their non-alcoholic ones! Service was good and they have lots of waiters which is nice because it was very busy. Nice decor inside and multiple places decorated for pics but it's very tightly packed inside especially sitting at the bar. The crab fried rice was good but a bit bland. The shrimp hot pot was pretty good. Salmon rolls were good, has a sushi like taste and texture with the seaweed wrap and roe. The Bangkok shrimp was ok but has an overwhelming tomato flavor, which isn't listed in the description and it is not very spicy. I would go back but maybe try some different dishes. When I first came to Dok Khao in early 2024, I was mesmerized. It was and still is hands-down the best Thai food I've ever had. The Pattana group has several Thai restaurants around the northern Virginia Maryland area and their food is simply amazing. You have to try it. My absolute favorite meal is the owners recipe pad Thai with tofu. That said, their fame has increased over the past few months and it is very unenjoyable to dine in there now. I now only ever attempt on a weeknight either very early or very late to avoid a 30 minute wait, and even then, the ambience is not there. It is extremely loud and they do the Vegas style birthday signs and sparklers while the owner/manager records. Usually it's 2-3 times while I'm dining. One time Dec 2024, they placed us at a two seater that they had sprung up near the host stand and the bar and it was freezing with the draft of the door constantly opening. We never got greeted after about 10 minutes so we left and went to Peter Changs next door. other than that time, the service has usually been good. Waters are usually refilled promptly by anyone walking by. I would advise doing carry out to start if you haven't been. The food is amazing, but it has slowly become less worth the weight or the unenjoyable atmosphere. read more

There are bird cages and floral arrangements. There is also plenty of parking. We started with ordering some drinks. I had the lychee Thai tea and it was really good. Not too sweet which was perfect and refreshing. For appetizers, we had the fried chive cakes. It was really good. There are so many choices on the menu that I did not know what to get, but they had a menu with specials by Chef Patty. One of the items was the cry baby noodles. If you ever watched Hunger on Netflix, you might have heard of this dish. Since its so unique, I knew I had to get it. It came with shrimp, flat rice noodle, egg, sweet pork sausage, red tofu, bean paste, and celery. Wow. This dish was flavorful and very filling. My friends had the pad si ew, lamb massaman curry, and spicy eggplant. They all enjoyed their food and the portions were generous. Service was top notch. They were very attentive and very friendly. Dare I say this is the best Thai place I've been to so far (lived in LA, Chicago) - don't go if you're going to complain about the price, but do go if you want some good food! From the tender lamb to the flavorful sauce, I was overjoyed with the dish. My table mate had the lamb curry. Filled with tender lamb, the curry sauce had just the right amount of spice. We also enjoy crispy salmon rolls. Yum. Based on the input of the server, I ordered the yuzu matcha. A delicious, crisp drink, it was complemented by the added matcha and met my caffeine craving without taking it overboard. Dok Khao. Wow wow. I had take out from this place once a few years ago, but finally ate inside tonight and I was so impressed. The restaurant is hip and pretty inside. The waiters are nice. The crowd is diverse and fun. There were two birthday celebrations while we were there and they have a giant sparkler and a sign that the birthday person holds for pictures. So cute. I would say bring a sweater! It was chilly inside. Every dish was fantastic. They accommodated for us to make things mild (which still had a bit of kick but just the right amount IMO). 1) Spicy Coconut Rice - the crispiness of the rice made me want to get this again. The sauce was tangy, limey, and def had the distinctive fish sauce flavor. Would recommend. 2) Som Tum - classic green papaya salad, light, fresh, well seasoned 3) Pad Thai - also delightful, classic, noodles cooked appropriately 4) Roti Massaman Curry - very flavorful, meat of choice (we got chicken) with a few cubes of carrot and potato. The sauce is the main thing, very good on rice. It comes with one roti which is pressed kind of into a waffle shape and is suuuuper fluffy and flaky, pulls apart into layers. Was very interesting and high quality. 5) Mango parfait - sweet sticky rice, a slice of mango with cubes that you have to scoop out, and two small scoops of mango ice cream. Tasty. Basically mango sticky rice with mango ice cream. My one gripe is that I wish the mango was already scooped out for easier eating. 6) Volcano Thai Tea Bingsu - I guess this is a new dessert special, but I would 1000% get it again. Great presentation at the table. There is a sweet cream layer that envelops a small cake sized mound of frozen shaved Thai tea which not icy at all. It was like someone made Thai tea with condensed milk, froze it, and shaved it and packed it into a ring mold. On top is a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, and there are graham cracker crumbles in the cream. I mean, this dish was *mwah* (kisses air) perfection. 7) Iced Americano - my brother said it was a really refined, subtle, and nutty flavor that was one of the best coffees he's ever had. The food at Dok Khao Thai Eatery is the best Asian food I ever ate. They have this dish under Fried, Rice, or Noodles: Kapow Fried Rice. You get to select a protein. I aways select chicken. Later I learned I can add two protein; so now I add shrimp. The service is well organized, and appreciate for freshly made dishes. The ambiance is truly authentically Thai. It is beautiful, with real plants overhead. It is tropical. Their takeout is just as good as dining in. However, I recommend dining in. read more

While Dok Khao offers decent Thai food, it's unfortunate that their take out process has become a mess. They require you to show your ID upon picking up your food order and they are stringent about it too. Never in my life have I ever heard of a restaurant implementing such an odd process. My mother ordered the food online and had me go pick it up. Upon arriving they asked for my mom's ID which I didn't have. Apparently showing the confirmation email, WITH MY MOTHER'S NAME on it, isn't enough either. They did not make people do this in the past so it is probably due to a bad experience they had but even so this seems like such a reactive move. It doesn't help that the restaurant is located in an area with non existent reception, so if you're picking up for friends or family and can't get a hold of them to sent you a photo ID of whoever ordered the food you're out of luck. Again, never heard of this process at any other restaurant in my life. I'm picking up takeout, not going to a nightclub. read more

Finally gave this place a try after talking about trying it since it opened! It did not disappoint and will be a part of our regular rotation, I think. We came to celebrate my birthday. We got the curry puffs as an app, and they were delicious. Great flavor and a nice light batter. I got the Dok Khao pad Thai with shrimp and would definitely get it again. I did medium heat and it was perfect - tasty without being too hot to taste all the complex flavors. The shrimp were perfect too. Since it was my birthday, we also had the cheesecake dessert. I enjoyed it, but it's a little different than a traditional NY cheesecake so didn't quite do it for me. I had the In the Garden cocktail and that I would pass on next time. It was just a lot of sweet. I bet if you love sweet cocktails you'd like it, but I probably should have picked something more my taste. I did think it had a fun presentation though! Loved the elevated and modern ambiance of Dok Khao. There are thoughtful little flowers on each table and even a fountain at the center of the restaurant. There's a mix of booth and chair seating. The food is awesome which everything being delicious. There's a wide selection of drinks as well. I enjoyed everything we ordered, and particularly the duck and soft shell crab dishes.
