We wanted pleasant no-work takeout dinner. Thai Aroma was fast and friendly, and they made us a couple of nice meals. Their $17 Pad Thai flat rice noodles were classic. The chicken was small chunks of tender juicy chicken. The peanut sauce was flavorful and just a little chunky. The menu says it's made with fish sauce, but it was not a fishy flavor, more a savory "umami" flavor. The bright scallions and subtle scrambled eggs were mixed into the sauce. The fresh crunchy bean sprouts were on the side. You could get it with tofu or shrimp. Their "Catfish Three Flavors" are battered deep-fried chunks of sweet fresh catfish. They stir-fried them in a small amount of medium spicy sweet-and-sour with light levels of garlic and chili. There was a light sprinkling of scallion and cilantro. The flavoring was light, and quite tasty. You can get it spicier. This place is easy to get to, just look closely at the map because this is not the main grocery-store building in the Lotte Plaza strip-mall on US-40 Baltimore National Pike at Ridge Road. You can also enter from an exit on US-29. Thai Aroma is across the lot from the grocery, in a smaller long building with a tire company. There's plenty of parking right out front. read more

A friend of ours recommended that we try this restaurant, located across from the Lotte Market plaza. We saw it many times but for whatever reason never tried it. It was a mid afternoon drop in, so we weren't surprised it was pretty empty. Our waiter wasn't super friendly but efficient and checked on us often. The manager (I think?) was super friendly and nice. We ordered basil fried rice with fried tofu, green curry, and Thai basil krapow seafood. All very delicious! Thai Aroma was full throttle on flavor, quality and quantity. This place may not catch your eye from the outside. There is nothing flashy about it. They are a hidden gem in plain sight. The restaurant was pretty empty but there seemed to be a semi steady flow of foot traffic from carryout. The service was super friendly. I enjoyed our waiter slash bartender beaming with joy as he described how he crafted our cocktails. He knew what he was doing because the drinks were delicious. The menu is pretty lengthy but not too overwhelming. We started off with trying some of their appetizers; fried spring rolls, steamed dumplings and chicken money bags. All of the items were tasty but the chicken money bags were so dang on good. I don't know another spot that has this on the menu. For the main dishes we settled on garlic stir-fry with chicken and extra veggies and Chawa fried rice. Man o man.......delicious!!! Full flavor eruptions. Came here for the first time in years and it was a good experience. I ordered pad thai which was pretty good, but the food is a bit overpriced compared to what it used to offer in my opinion. The service was a bit abrupt but didn't bother me- I remember the server handed us our drinks and before we could say thank you, he said "you're welcome" and quickly walked away. Food was ok, but not great. We ordered the ubiquitous Drunken Noodles, Larb Gai, and a catfish dish. The Larb Gai was pretty good, but the other 2 dishes were just so-so, and when we told the host that we didn't think the Drunken Noodles were actually Drunken Noodles because there was no basil in it and had egg in it and a little sweet, so we thought it might've been pad seeiew instead. What got us so irritated is what the guy said to us. "No, this is drunken noodles, maybe you never had it before" so sister said we know what it should taste like and has no basil, and has egg, we lived in Thailand and we've also eaten at plenty of other that restaurants all over the DMV. Then he replied, "we don't use a lot of basil because it's too expensive". Which, besides something you would never tell a customer, it's not true. If you go to a pho place, they give everyone a pile of it with every bowl of pho. Plus, when the catfish dish came, they had a bunch of basil on top. So what a bunch of crap. REALLY didn't appreciate his response. (Fyi, the Thai tea also has a funny taste). Won't be going back. read more

This was our favorite Thai restaurant - perhaps our favorite restaurant in the area even but the service has gotten worse over the years and the price keeps going up without a good balance. The last time we were here, my husband ordered extra broccoli with his dish, an up charge of $5. When his order arrived, there wasn't even a full tablespoon of broccoli! The owner happened to be there that day, and as long time customers, we asked to talk to him to ask about this but he choose not to talk to us but went to the kitchen instead. We all understand how prices have gone up in recent years but this was just too far off. Too bad because the food is good. read more

I like to come here when I'm craving Thai food and I'm at work. I decided to be adventurous this day in order the infamous sweet mango rice. Definitely got the sweet right. I do like the stickiness of the rice and wish there was some mint to cut some of that sweetness. I decided to stick with what I love best and order the chicken drunken noodles. This place has been my go to Thai place since I was 12 (so 20 plus years). My father frequents this place weekly, and when I'm in town this is one of the only places I actually like to sit inside and enjoy. Most people here do take out, so it's generally quite minus the takeout desk (I'm sure they do 15-20 orders an hour without getting too loud). The average diner at the restaurant is a family, there for a good time and probably a local to Ellicott City, or surrounding areas. The service is always great, with it being a family owned restaurant (good families own this place too). The people are friendly, and of course with my dad being a frequenter, they know what he'll order before he does (we're people of habit). The food, oh the food! I'm always one to pick the Pad Thai with chicken, and every topping on the Pad Thai is fresh, and well cooked. With the toppings being crispy, and the actual Pad Thai being the perfect softness without being sautéed with too many sauces. The green curry and the white curry are both great, but, I prefer the green curry to anything else, as with the snow peas and the medley of crunch and softness from the chicken and vegetables is one to not pass off, and I would say the coconut in the dish really adds a refreshing after taste (a good one of course). Both my wife and my step mother like to order the drunken noodle (or Pad See-Yu which has (as most Thai places) spices that you can choose, from Thai spice (I can't handle that) to not too spicy (but it has to be spicy as that's part of the dish). The noodles have a great texture that makes me think it's hand made, and that definitely adds quite a bit here. If you don't know about this place, do you even know Howard County (I'm joking) definitely add it as your go to pick up/delivery place. Or, come on by and enjoy. read more

Solid spot for delicious thai food. Very convenient for takeout since you can order online and food's cooked to order and ready in usually 15-20, so you can be in and out in minutes. We really wanted to love this place again. It used to be one of our favorite Thai restaurants. The food quality went downhill years ago, but we noticed that the menu had changed, and the reviews were improving, so we decided to give it another try. We won't be back again. I ordered Krapow with crispy duck. It is my very favorite dish, and I have eaten it at dozens of restaurants all over the country. This was the worst I've had. Positively inedible. The duck was sliced very thin, and it was coated with a layer of gummy goo. Even pieces that were not in the sauce were slimy and not the least bit crispy. The sauce tasted good, but the flavor of the mushy duck was just just awful. I told a gentleman, who I believe was the manager or owner, about this issue, and I tried to show him the gooey mess coating the duck, but he would've even look at it. He insisted, "That's how we do it." I asked him, "shouldn't crispy duck be crispy?" He did not respond, but instead said, "Do you want something different?" I said no. Never once did he apologize or offer to remake the dish. He only tried to convince me that the slimy, gloopy duck was "crispy duck." Disgraceful and so disappointing. The rest of my family order curries, larb, and steamed dumplings. The dumplings were below average, and the curries (green and panang) were okay but not great. The larb was good. Our waitress was very nice, but the dismissive man was demeaning and cold. I guarantee this business will not survive with him at the helm. read more

This is a small place in a shopping mall. You will bypass this spot. The food here is DELICIOUS!!! They have the best Drunken Noodles in the state of Maryland! The drunken noodles just melt in your mouth! It has just a nice savory buttery and sauce taste...you have to eat the noodles with your eyes clothes! The banana crepes are delicious...honey and banana is an odd combination but this combination will just melt in your mouth. First, I am wondering why so many 1 star reviews are not averaged in and also put in the "not recommended" section. Seems like an awful coincidence, and I know companies can challenge reviews with Yelp and get them moved to the not recommended page or deleted altogether. In any case, I've always thought the food here was OK - fine for a local place and I liked the casual ambiance and decor -- pleasant but not ostentatious. Their servers tend to leave you alone while you eat and not check in which can be annoying at times but during covid it was actually nice because I really didn't want anyone so close to me while eating. My favorite used to be the coconut soup here which was incredible and better than I've had elsewhere -- I know because I order it in every Thai place I go to! Now I think they have changed owners again because the soup was very marginal to say the least. The chicken in it looked liked sliced lunchmeat chicken instead of real chicken pieces. It had absolutely no flavor whatsoever and was gummy to chew and I actually had to discretely spit a lot of it out to my napkin. Could be because of the way it was prepared, or a cheaper chicken, or both. Also, there were no vegetables in the soup as there used to be, except one tiny piece of soggy tomato. There used to be scallions, lemon grass, bamboo at least, and often larger pieces of vegetable as well such as fresh tomato chunks, etc. I had gotten used to the generous portions of vegetable in the soup, but would be content with at least some scallions and bamboo, but there was nothing. So, it was basically just the broth since the chicken was almost inedible. Another uncomfortable thing was that a manager came to my table to look at something and put his face right into my face. Who does that anymore, with covid still around; very rude although probably unintentional. I also heard him making fun of a previous customer who complained about the change in the food, so that is a good way to never get anymore feedback. read more

We ordered a variety of appetizers (satay, crab rangoon, vegetarian spring rolls, fried tofu, Tom yum, and money bags). The server recommended pairings of sauces with certain dishes which turned out to be delectable. At the end of our meal, the owner even came out to thank us. This restaurant is three stars in all respects for a sit down experience. The pricing is reasonable, but doesn't quite make up for the average overall experience. I had the calamari, pad thai, and drunken noodles. They were a bit heavy fish oil on the pad thai. While this added a spectacular after taste, it was a bit too pungent for some of the other people at the table. All the food was good, but not great. The cleanliness was adequate, but not spectacular. The same could be said for the service. I gave four stars because this would be a great place for takeout when you don't feel like cooking. Very solid little family run place. Not at all fancy inside but pretty spacious and clean enough. The food was authentic tasty and fresh and my crab friend rice came with a ton of jumbo lump crab which alone is reason to get their food. Larb salad was also excellent. Will become part of our dinner carry out rotation but would probably only do lunch there in person. read more

I met a friend here for dinner on a weekend evening. Thai Aroma was very clean and the service was friendly. We were promptly seated and handed menus. My friend is vegan so I thought I'd be supportive by refraining from ordering meat during this meal. I'm a pretty nice guy. He ordered the ginger tofu (pretty good!) and I did try a bite. I ordered drunken noodles with tofu (pad kee mao I believe) and boy am I glad I did. I asked the waiter if the tofu is fried before being added to the dish and his answer was a bit ambiguous so I hoped for the best. Sure enough, it was, and I was happy. I asked for it to be prepared mild - I highly recommend this. I'm Indian so I can handle a decent amount of spice (although I must say my tolerance has decreased over the years and my mom might disown me if she knew). But even the mild preparation was noticeably spicy. I think the regular preparation would've been too much for me to handle, and I wouldn't have enjoyed the dish. Back to the tofu. It was awesome. So delicious. Everything about the tofu drunken noodles was phenomenal. The veggies were fresh and the dish had that classic Thai flavor that one just yearns for and I must say I was so happy after eating here. I will go back and I will order the exact same thing. Thin sauce is an understatement for the pad phrik king... it was mostly water, drizzled with oil and sprinkled with chili paste. Lastly the papaya salad had iceberg lettuce and made up most of it. I'm down for Thai food pretty much whenever. That being said, I've been to some unimpressive "Thai" places. However, Thai Aroma is legit -- completely worth the drive from Columbia. Chicken Satay, Yellow Curry, Masimun Beef, Taro Balls, Thai Tea... all delicious (my sister and I like to order a bunch of different things and share). The service was good and they will happily give you to go boxes -- necessary for the portion sizes! Additionally, if you aren't that crazy about spicy food, they have a pretty informative guide on the menu about which foods can be made less spicy (at the cost of flavor), and which ones aren't spicy.
