It's true that you can get fresh, good sushi at places like Katsuya and the like, but their offerings have lost their edge and lost their excitement, while I've lost my will to pony up big bucks for meals from chefs who'd rather be watching Obsession at the multiplex. And so, Miho is the antithesis of all that pescatarian homogenization. This cozy nook manages to have everything you want: toro (fresh, fatty and fabulous), Saba (smoked and savory chewiness), Uni with Quail Egg (rich and decadent), and Ankimo (monkfish liver, mild and very satisfying). Sake is cold and reasonably priced, while the service is friendly and completely tuned in to each customer. To finish my meal, I asked the chef to make me a hand roll version of one of their most abundant dishes: the New Guy Roll. Bursting at the seams with Spicy shrimp & crab, shrimp tempura, avocado, creamy sauce and eel sauce, it wasn't easy for them to reconfigure and re-portion everything into a handheld model -- but do it they did, and the result was both tasty and manageable.
