Amazing location, although parking can definitely get hectic on certain days. If you arrive after lunch and before dinner, it's usually much easier. Inside, the atmosphere is beautiful, great lighting, and plenty of seating. The food is ALWAYS fresh, seriously, they don't seem to have an off day. Customer service is also very good, and the entire team seems to work together and stay in sync. I would have easily given Kushiyu 5 stars, but unfortunately there's one thing I just can't get behind: having a payment tablet pushed in front of me for the tip before I'm even finished enjoying my meal. I specifically asked for a paper check and was told no, then the tablet was brought over anyway. My meal wasn't finished, and I personally like to take my time, finish my food, and pay when I'm actually ready to leave. I explained that I didn't think this was right, and I felt bad for the server because he told me it's simply what the owner wants. So I'm not blaming the staff at all! they were doing what they were told. I'm a serious foodie and have 300+ elite reviews under my belt, so I've experienced enough restaurants to know what makes a dining experience great and what takes away from it. The food and service here are absolutely worthy of 5 stars. The forced tablet tipping experience, unfortunately, is not. That policy is the only reason I'm leaving 4 stars, and honestly, it's also the reason I won't be coming back. I hadn't been to Kushiyu in about 10-15 years. We decided to revisit it for lunch today because my sister wanted sushi. I ordered the yakitori bento box, which was $20 because this is what they are known for. The yakitori was decent, but nothing memorable, and the rice was drenched in sauce, which made it much less enjoyable. I've had better yakitori at restaurants in the South Bay. Given the price and quality, it would be hard for me to come back for lunch when there are so many options along Ventura Boulevard, or even if I'm willing to drive a little farther to Sawtelle, Little Tokyo, or Gardena for Japanese skewers. One other downside: the restrooms don't have baby changing tables, making it less convenient for families with infants. Overall, this revisit didn't live up to my memories, and I don't see myself returning anytime soon. read more

One of my go to sushi spots because of their simplicity and quality taste. Located in a shopping plaza with lots of parking. There's underground spots as well. The space inside is not that big so I would recommend reservations, especially Friday nights and weekends. You can order take out as well. The menu isn't overly big, which is nice. They also have some unique rolls I hadn't seen anywhere else like the lemon roll which I would recommend. My other favorites were the blue crab roll and halibut hamachi. We had a wonderful date night experience here! Arrived at 5:30 PM and no lines, seated immediately on a Friday night. The restaurant is spacious and airy! Able to handle all the live yakitori cooking happening and there was so much staff from host, wait staff, and chefs. Food was so hot when it arrived for the grilled meats, sushi was still cold when plated, and our hot tea was constantly being refilled without us asking. We loved sitting at the bar cause we're quick diners, but we ordered so much food and finished dining by 6:15 PM. Super stuffed from the dinner and it was so worth it. There were other families with children dining here using the table option instead of the bar. There were high chairs available so we plan to bring our child next time. The menu is izakaya style where you can order sushi/cold apps/yakitori/hot apps/noodles of both hot and cold variations. It's so diverse, Kushiyu would make a wonderful spot bringing a group who can't make up their mind what to eat or as a year-round spot between cold weather and hot. Orders that stood out the most: Assorted Sushi Appetizer (4 different fish sashimi), Hirami Yuzu sashimi, lemon roll, chicken w/green onion skewer, chicken wings skewer, beef tongue skewer. Came here for a business lunch with a client, his choice, my first time, but definitely not my last. I have to say is one of my favorite new Sushi spots. So glad we came here. Inside is very open and modern, white marble and white walls, sushi bar in the middle is the star. The sushi chefs are excellent. As I sad the chefs were amazing as well as the servers and the greeter, top notch all the way. Unfortunately I did not get many pics f the food as it would have been odd for me with this client, but take my word and view the 1000+ pictures. This sushi is fresh, so much flavor, no heavy ingredients just perfect in every way, quality and pride is what you will get here. We got so many dishes I cannot remember them all, highlights were the Unagi, cooked perfectly, crisp but tender, just a small bit of rice on bottom. Next the Asian roll, you must get this, probably my favorite, an explosion of flavor. Spicy tuna roll, the rice was perfect, not hard or too soft, loved it. Also got a baked scallop roll (spicy) and an albacore special. Maybe a few others, then we ended with the crème brûlée on a wedge of fruit, perfect presentation. This is an excellent sushi spot, going on my recommendation list, but you will spend a good amount of money as everything is so good, you will not want to stop. 3 of us for lunch with tip $350. Randomly walked into this place with my boyfriend because we were in the area. It was a Friday night and they were not busy at all, a lot of empty tables. We got seated right away no problem. We stayed seated for a good 30 minutes until we decided to get up and leave because not one server/worker approached our table. The least they could have done was introduce themselves. There were multiple servers just walking by, not even acknowledging that we are there. Awful service. The cherry on top was the chefs and the host who seated us saying thank you as we silently got up and left the place. This tells me everything I need to know about this establishment. We ordered a wide variety of dishes to try as much as possible and I tasted almost everything Unfortunately I didn't connect with the flavors Most of the sashimi dishes had a strong fishy taste as if the fish wasn't handled precisely enough before serving and in some cases the cuts were too thick for sashimi. The only dish I truly enjoyed was a vegetarian roll, which felt balanced and tasty to me, probably because it didn't include fish. The fruit creme brulee dessert also didn't work for me, it didn't look very appealing, and the flavors didn't come together in a way I liked. The staff was very nice, and the place itself is small and cute, with a pleasant atmosphere overall. Terrible experience at Kushiyu Tarzana. I made an outdoor reservation and called ahead to confirm my small service dog was allowed, they said yes. We waited 30 minutes past our reservation, then were told outside wasn't available and we had to sit inside. Once inside, they suddenly said no dogs allowed. When I explained she's a service dog, they questioned my disability and asked me to explain "how," which is completely inappropriate. Yes, it's not the cheapest: I can see where some ppl might feel like the prices might be somewhat aggressive but where else can you get the breadth of options with the consistently very high level of quality of all dishes - ie, everyone can be very happy with the meal even if they don't eat sashimi. Perfect place to go with a group that wants a broader Japanese experience. And, to be clear, the sushi there is amazing - I've never had a bad piece of sushi / sashimi ( even the mackerel isn't fishy). I forgot to mention to TAKA that my friend can't have spicy food so when we ordered our 1st dish (oysters) my friend told him that it was too spicy. Now the oysters were over $60 bucks but he was very happy to change them without me even demanding to return them. In fact, every subsequent dish that came out he went out of his way to mention that my dish was spicy and her's wasn't. I don't wanna go into depth what we ordered, but basically we ordered everything and it was all good. They had fish from Japan, they had gourmet dishes from all over the place. Visited Kushiyu for the first time last week -- I'd been craving yakitori and our usual spot recently closed, so we decided to give this place a try. I have to say, it did not disappoint. What stood out to me right away is how authentic the menu is. They have the kind of options you'd typically only find in Little Tokyo or the Torrance area, which is a pleasant surprise. If you're looking for real-deal yakitori with genuine Japanese offerings, this place delivers. The food was good all around. The space itself isn't your typical cozy, intimate Japanese restaurant. It's quite open, bright, and modern -- a different vibe, but it works. My only gripe is that the ordering process at the bar can be a bit confusing. Sushi and grilled items are ordered through the chef, but everything else -- including some appetizers -- goes through the regular staff. It's not immediately clear, and I noticed it was an issue for most of the customers sitting at the bar, not just us. It can get a little frustrating, so I'd love to see them streamline that process or at least make it more obvious for guests. Other than that, great experience. Will definitely be back. read more

Made a reservation for 7 at 8PM on a Friday evening and the table was ready when we arrived! At that time, many parties were finishing up their meals so the restaurant was pretty full. However, as our meal went on, many folks started gradually finishing up and leaving. Our server was May and she was super attentive and helpful. Since it was our first time here, she had plenty of recommendations and helped us order a perfect amount of food for our larger group. While I didn't have a chance to snap photos of all of the dishes, some of my favorites were the garlic edamame, yellowtail belly roll, jalapeño truffle roll (I'm not typically a fan of truffle), and the albacore sashimi special with deep fried green onions. They also serve kushiyaki (skewered meat) and while a bit pricey, the Chilean bass was a crow favorite among our group. One note is the crème brulee comes in a slightly non-traditional form and is served atop some slices of honeydew. So if anyone if your paryy try has a melon allergy, just something to be aware of! All in all, this was definitely a splurge meal but for the cuts of sushi, great service, and nice ambiance, it was well worth it. I haven't been back in probably decades but it was just as good as I remembered! My number one immediate order was tuna on a rice cake. Not sure why they don't have this on the menu but I knew they make it and it's the sushi. They definitely originated this and no other sushi place makes it better. My friend raves about this place and finally took me to taste for myself. The place is in a strip mall on Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana - mall is Tarzana Village on the North side a little past Tampa. Plenty of free parking. We started with the grilled shrimp and moved on to the grilled chicken wings. Chef Derek took great care of us and made sure everything was over and above expectations- absolutely delicious. We then shared a crab hand roll and Chef Derek sliced the avocado paper thin and did a wrap technique I'd not seen before. Been wondering about this place since we moved to this area but somehow they closed for a while. Finally saw they reopened so we went on a Friday night over a week ago to try it out. I don't know how the place looked like before but they have high ceilings and there's a huge bar seating in the middle. For a Friday night we went after 8 pm so the wait was just 15 mins. We were seated on a 4 top by the wall facing the bar so we get to see the activity from where we were sitting. We were given menus and when we were finally ready to order that was the only time our server told us that the entrees/dinner are not available and pointed to other items that were not available that night. I mean would've been nice if she told us when giving us the menus which items were not available because now we have to look again and decide what we want. Pretty sure I wrote a review of this visit but somehow it was filtered or removed? Anyway overall if you haven't been I would say to try it. Solid date night spot or just hanging out with friends.
