As much as I wanted to like this place, I couldn't. I stumbled onto this shop because I was in the area. Decided to check it out and thought the lights reminded me of the staircase at Uniqlo in San Francisco. I actually didn't mind the lights here. However, I felt that the scoop of gelato I ordered was slightly overpriced. I was underwhelmed by the flavor (hazelnut) and its texture (icy). First of all, why would you stop for a cannoli from a gelato place when Mike's Pastry is just a few doors down? That aside, we found this spot to be just fine, but we only got gelato. My mom and sister had the mint. It was kind of bitter in my opinion, but they liked it. As someone who has been to Europe and had gelato, it seems wrong to give my opinion as I didn't even buy one. Food: i only got gelato here but they have other desserts. The gelato's consistency was very light - not as creamy as I would have imagined it to be. The flavor was alright. I was not that impressed. Decor: The place has two entrances. From one entrance you can buy only gelato. The second entrance has the gelato, coffees/espressos, cannoli and other desserts. There are limited seats available. It was quite small. Despite being 90+ degrees outside, they left the doors open. So, I was sweating profusely and my gelato did not stand a chance. Service: Quick and simple. Best gelato I've had in a while - I really like the selection and the inventiveness of the flavors. They have tiramisu, hazelnut, and other decadent flavors right next to more traditional ones. And if you can't decide, you can swirl multiple flavors in one order (at least two). I like that their gelato is high-quality as well. It was drizzling outside, and the better sense in me told me to skip this indulgence and head out to the car before the drizzle turned into rain. But once again, my sweet tooth over came my common sense. Mike's Pastry was too crowded, so cannoli was out. Something cool instead. Gelateria is located on a corner along Hanover St., and it servers +25 varieties of sorbettos and gelatos. Only one size, for $5.00 I had a cassata Siciliana and a stracciatella. The cassata has bits of candied fruit, while the stracciatella had bits of chocolate mixed in with vanilla ice cream. Pretty tasty, but the texture was not as dense as I expected. I liked the variety of flavors, but overall, OK. Need to try others in the North End to compare. read more

This is from the Boston Herald: "Gelateria is the latest venture by Frank De Pasquale (Mare, Umbria, Bricco). It will serve 50 flavors, hand-crafted by Italian gelato-makers Giovanni Gagliotta and Nello Caccioppoli, both of whom recently moved to Boston. The decor is bright, breezy modern Italian, with a streetside counter to tempt Hanover Street passersby. The gelato selection will change seasonally; each cone or cup will cost $3.75. Gelateria is now an entire shop dedicated to gelato. Amazingness. Boston in the summer becomes a magical place; the harsh resolve that gets Bostonians through the winter gives way to a good-natured appreciation of the 10 weeks of perfect weather. Don't expect a "Howdy" on Boylston Street, but if you live in the city you must take advantage of the season. I hopped on my bicycle and took a leisurely pace down Memorial Drive right over the river, and crossed over Mass. Ave. onto Comm. Ave. I decided to head over to the North End for some ice cream; Boston consumes an infamous amount of ice cream in the summer and I had never tried the city's Italianized offerings. I knew I was getting closer as I started to bike over the confetti remains of the Celtics victory parade, and crossed over the newly submerged Central Artery onto the tourist-infested Hanover Street. I shouldn't complain -- I came here of my own accord, but I soon realized why I don't frequent the area. I stopped at a trendy-looking spot called Gigi and picked out a few flavors. Only one size is offered for $4.95 including up to three flavors; I tried "Bacio" ("kiss" in Italian) which is reminiscent of the Perugina chocolate of the same name. With it I included the old stalwarts of strawberry and pistachio. The mistake was mine; I long ago learned to never trust an establishment whose pistachio ice cream is green. As I slurped down the first spoon of the Soylent, all I could taste was noxious chemicals. The strawberry tasted like frozen Nesquik strawberry powder. The Bacio was a mild consolation after the tablespoon of Red 40 I must have ingested; even its hazelnuts were coated in a slimy chocolate which I now realize must have been shoddy execution rather than artistic license. Stay away! If the crusaders against food additives are right, your internal organs will thank you. Unfortunately, I can't recommend any alternatives in the immediate vicinity, but if I can muster up the will to try the frozen offerings at Mike's or Modern I will report back in these pages forthwith. read more

An errand brought me to the North End today. I walked here from where I was dowtown about a mile away. After completing my errand in this hot weather, I needed some refreshment and I thought that what I needed was a cold cup of gelato. The gelato here is good. It's not Italy delicious but it 's good...(although sometimes "Italy delicious" is made so by the fact that when you are in Italy no matter what, things just taste better because you're there.) You get a small cup or cone with 3 small scoops. It was definitely enough of a serving for me but at $4.95 it is pricier than I think it should be. Today I chose limoncello, mixed berry and pistachio. The limoncello ended up being my favorite as it seemed the deepest in flavor and most refreshing. Those who know me know that I never EVER throw away food. NEVER! So if any of them would have seen me throw away an almost full cup of gelato they would have thought that either I was hit in the head by a very large, blunt object.... or the gelato in question tasted EXTREMELY HORRENDOUS. Well, you can examine the noggin in question and see no telltale bumps or bruises, so it's gotta be the latter. This was TERRIBLE GELATO! Both flavors (pistachio and strachitella..... Essentially chocolate chip for you gelato neophytes) had no flavor at all. None! Zip! Nada! They tasted like frozen skimmed milk. BLECH!! The homeless guy on the street after seeing my disappointed face told me to return it and get my money back.... but I wanted to rid myself of the offending concoction ASAP so I tossed it away in the nearest trash can. They offer me a dairy free flavor, so I dutifully order up, wanting to fit in with the crowds of tourists in the North End on a hot summer day. I get a bowl, a small plastic spoon and some lemon flavored icy mixture that is very sweet, somewhat tart and reminiscent of a Del's Lemonade. Five dollars makes a dent in my daily allotment of food money. So if you have to avoid dairy, which is tough in this cheese friendly, gelato filled neighborhood, you can hit up this place and end up with something overpriced, sticky and sweet. The price was a bit high, and it's silly that you can only get one size. I think the product itself is pretty good but there is a concentration of gelato places in the area - it's worth scoping out other places unless your need for a gelato fix is so great that a huge tub of it for $5 seems reasonable to you. The inside is cute in a sort of cheesy 80s way, but there's no air-con so it's a bit uncomfortable inside. That being said, I had 1/2 caramel 1/2 passionfruit and it was perfect! My husband, myself and two children were walking around The North End after hitting up Mikes. All of a sudden our seven year old son stops dead in his tracks and plasters himself to the gelato case, "mom, ice cream!" And I say, "Joey, that's gelato," to which he replies "gelato, mmmmm...." After spending quality time living in Italy, I was sad to come back to Boston because I thought all gelato would be a shell of its former self. Thankfully, there was the Gelateria. Since we got turned away from Neptune Oyster for dinner (helloooo ridiculously long wait!), we decided to roam around the North End and explore. There are so many cute shops and restaurants. We were bound to find something. And behold! Gigi Gelateria caught our eyes. After passing the long line at Mike's, Gigi's was an alluring sight with ZERO wait! Success...? Sort of! The location is pristine for wandering tourists who are looking for small treats to fuel more adventure. We got caught up with the gelato selection in the front and failed to notice the other flavors inside the store. We didn't see it until we were walking away with our gelato cups. Please know that there's so many other options available inside, along with coffee and tea. The service was a bit unnerving. Definitely was not the best. Eh. Our server looked impatient as we tried to figure out what to get. I didn't feel comfortable asking for samples and she looked annoyed when we couldn't pronounce the name of the flavors. Haaaah. The gelato was average. It wasn't very memorable. However, I can distinctly recall the unpleasant exchange and the feeling of regret over the steep price for a small gelato cup. My recommendation is simple: if you're craving a quick fix for gelato, Gigi's may be right for you. I have to say - I am a fan. I come for the grapefruit and for the limoncello. I also try several other flavors so I can see what I am missing out on - one of these days, I'm getting a baccio and chocolate combo and then passing out by the Paul Revere house (only because they have benches there).
