I wish there was more gelato competition in the North End because this place is very very mediocre. The selection is modest at best and the flavours are pretty much the same every visit, which makes it dull after a while. I've been there 3 times and every time, there have been ice crystals in the gelato. It's light but doesn't have the smooth texture that should come with gelatos. I've tried the following flavours: 1) Chocolate - Not chocolately enough, 2) Hazlenut - Great flavour but way nauseatingly sweet, 3) Gianduia Torino - Also too sweet, 4) Stracciatella - Meh. This place will hit the spot when you leave The Daily Catch wreaking of garlic and need something to cleanse your palate that doesn't consist of eating a giant canoli. I really like the gelato! The flavors are creative (step inside, instead of waiting outside) and there is usually a place to sit. It's a nice, cooling break among the hustle and bustle of North End. Haven't tried their Gelato but their Cannoli's werent that bad, but they were really overpriced. I'd only go here if Maria's were closed, Modern Pastry had a line, or if Mike's line was huge as well. The service was good though. Nothing to complain about that. read more

If you want a decent cannoli and/or gelato without the wait of Mike's or Modern, this place will do the trick. I had family in from out of town and wanted to bring them to Mike's, but we could see the line forming down the sidewalk, per usual. In a bit of a hurry and craving something sweet after dinner, we decided to pop in here for our dessert. There is a gelato counter that you can order from without actually going inside, but I wanted to go in and see what else they had. Just to the right when you walk in, there is a counter with several cannoli fillings, toppings and two different shells to pick from, and the staff will make your cannoli to order! We ended up getting a cannoli with pistachio filling and dipped in sliced almonds, a cannoli with traditional ricotta filling and dipped in chocolate chips, and a small gelato in a sugar cone. The method of filling the cannoli appeared that there would be nothing in the middle once I got to it, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the creamy ricotta filling completely filled the shell. Overall, I thought the product and prices were very good, and would definitely go back to try some other flavors. read more

The gelato is expensive but great. But the customer service is horrible. Talking about the little anex one at the end of Hanover Street basically in the Citizens ATM. Rude, inattentive come to mind. And no take out pint containers. Gotta get a cup or walk to main store further down Hanover St. This new location is primo, so why not capitalize on it !? It's small but stocking togo pints and covers should be a no brainer and they'd be getting me to buy a larger portion to take home. Cannolis are awesome here...we had tiramisu cream and choc chip cream,both light enough yet flavorful, generously stuffed into a crispy crepey plain cannoli then covered with choc chips covering the cream on both ends Each bite into the cannoli is met with oooohhhs and aaaahhhhs. It tasted of buttercream and was creamy yet icy and chunky as if it was artificially thickened and/or sweetened and weirdly iced. Just a gelato lover here that was thoroughly disappointed with their chocolate chip gelato (ice cream) and mixed fruit (terrible taste). Staff wasn't friendly to the extent that I feel I need to point out friendliness, but service was standard with only replies to questions and inquiries. Absolutely the worst. I went here a few years ago and it was nowhere as bad as this place is currently. My coworker and I went to get gelato during our lunch break. They're located inside Citizen's Bank and they JUST look like they opened. It was almost 1PM. The gelato didn't look fresh or appetizing at all. I told the clerk I'd like a small scoop of hazelnut and she looked like she had no idea what hazelnut even was. Turned off already, someone they knew strolled up and they started talking, completely ignoring my order. When I finally got my order, I gave them my card and THEN they told me it was cash only. I was so tempted to just leave the scoop, but I gave her the cash and didn't even eat the gelato. Do yourself a favor and don't go here. read more

What the other folks have said. I asked the server (she was quite friendly) for recommendations and got gianduia torino, strawberry and straciatella. All three were very melty and barely stayed on the cone. The gianduia was the best of the lot - some hazelnuttiness and abundant specks of chocolate chips. The straciatella had less flavor and body than frozen skim milk, and the chocolate chips, while visible, failed to make their acquaintance with my taste buds. The strawberry was the opposite - thick, sticky, and strongly infused with what I must say is not the best tasting strawberry in the world. For the flavors I've tried, I would give this place 1 star. The additional star is for them being present - in the North End where gelaterias are surprisingly scarce. I would even venture to try some of the other flavors (no one can get chocolate wrong, right?) another summery day when I'm desperate for a quick cool down. read more

I wish I could give this place no stars. My sister was visiting from NY and had never been to Boston, so I took her around the North End to Mike's Pastry and for some gelato. We walked into this place and my sister, being young and having an overactive bladder had to use the bathroom. She walked towards the back to use the restroom while I started to look at the menu and decide on a flavor. Before she could even pass the counter, a very rude man started yelling at us both that bathrooms were for customers only. I tried to explain that we were going to get gelato but that my sister was going to use the bathroom first so that she didn't have to hold her gelato while she was in the bathroom (a pretty reasonable thing to do). Before we could even explain, he cut us off, shushed us, and yelled more about not being able to use the bathroom. We immediately left because we were both so offended, and decided to get gelato elsewhere. The entire time we walked down the street looking for gelato for the next 2 blocks, I could see this man (probably the owner) standing on the sidewalk watching us. So thank you, Gigi Gelateria for giving such a nice Boston welcome to my sister. Contrary to most of the reviews about Gelateria, my experience was a pleasant one. My cousin was visiting from Italy and we ventured to Boston for the day eventually making our way to the North End. We ate at Mother Anna's (see review on that) and then walked around a bit finally ending up at the Gelaeria for something sweet. We ordered a round of espresso and I had hazelnut gelato & my sister had straciatella. My gelato was the perfect consistency and was abundant in flavor, likewise with our espresso. It was like we were sitting sipping our espresso and eating our gelato on the corner of my Nonna's street in Calabria.. I would recommend visiting the Gelateria in the North End. End your meal with something sweet or quench your taste buds with something cool on a warm city day. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe they accept credit cards which is a major downfall when roaming around a big city with some hefty price tags.. Normally in this situation people aren't inclined to carry cash in their pockets. Seating is very minimal as well.. This treat is better eaten across the street at the North End Park where you can catch an eye full of what Boston has to offer, old and new. Hopefully our return visit will be just as tasty! Not a bad little place. I come in here for coffee and the occasional gelato. Espresso is good, better than a lot of the other cafe's I've been to down there.
