I wasn't able to rent a car from advantage because of territorial problems with franchise and corporate so the rental company next to them was able to accommodate me. Upon return of the vehicle I mentioned to the agent Nicole that I got a compact and not a mid size vehicle. I mentioned that I had to add oil and air and she completely surprised me when she gave me my total. She apologized and went more than the extra mile on this rental. Too bad I can't give less than one star. I reserved and paid for a vehicle rental at the airport, and declined all additional insurance coverage, and the cost was $232. When I arrived to pick it up they asked me what I wanted for coverage, showing me the options in a notebook with no pricing. I chose the basic, thinking that's what came with it, since I had already declined everything else online. Then the next day I find out they charged over $250 extra, so I tried to call and get it straightened out. All I got was AI customer service, which was no help at all. Before turning the car in, I stopped and filled it up with about seven gallons, certainly more than I had used. I drove the remaining six miles to the airport and turned the vehicle in and went to the desk to find out about the additional charges, only to find out they had added $250 in additional coverage, more than I had even paid for the rental! Then to top it off, I got the final receipt the next day and find out they charged me $27 for fuel, even though I had driven a total of just 61 miles. Total cost of everything, including the gas I bought: $519 for 61 miles in four days. That's almost $9 a mile! I could have done just about anything else for transportation and paid less. My round trip plane ticket wasn't even this much. Never rent from this company. Made a reservation three weeks in advance for a trip out of town, got an email and text confirmation the day before, got to rental office, and they say there is nothing available. I was told that a text from an employee was sent to my phone before closing of the previous day, stating such. Must have been from an unidentified number because I deleted when the first word said "Hi", thinking it's spam. Very unprofessional. Long story short, I ended up wasting a whole bunch of time in the process, canceling the entire rental, and taking my personal vehicle on the road. Terrible experience with Dollar Rent a Car at Charlotte Airport. I booked through Travelocity at a quoted price of about $7/day, but the reality was completely different. After waiting 30 minutes in line--even though I had already checked in online--they forced me to buy their insurance and tacked on extra airport fees. I called customer service (800 number not in CLT) and I spoke to someone with an attitude who didn't understand that I was charged twice. Listen to the 1-star reviews and don't rent from Dollar! All Dollar customers, regardless of if they pre-reserved their vehicle, were funneled into the Hertz line because the Dollar desk was empty. Thankfully we got there during a brief lull and only had to wait ~30 minutes, unlike other folks who came later. When we got to the counter, we were presented with a booklet that told us that even though we had already paid for Expedia insurance, it wouldn't actually cover the full value of the rental vehicle, might charge us a deductible, or many similarly alarming scenarios. They suggested we add a basic Dollar insurance plan to our rental to ensure coverage. We ended up electing to add it because we were holding up the growing line and because we had no way to verify or deny these claims. At checkout, the insurance plan came out to an extra $50 per day, more than doubling our cost. On top of that, they charged us a $300 deposit for the rental, which seemed a bit excessive. Overall, it was an experience that left us feeling taken advantage of rather than cared for. It's a shame Dollar doesn't have better staffing in a major transport hub like Charlotte and resorts to information overload tactics to force last-minute purchases. I did not appreciate the FEARMONGERING to upsell me to a different car and/or to purchase additional insurance coverage. I booked the "manager's choice" car rental online, and they gave me a Ram 2500 pickup truck - a very large car! They said it was worth over $100,000 so I needed to get additional insurance, despite the fact I had my own auto insurance and additional collision coverage from my credit card. When I declined the additional insurance because it's not mandatory, the agent said I needed to speak to his manager because he said that he doesn't think I understand the risk - A REVERSE KAREN! I insisted on getting only what I paid for, and nothing more, and they eventually did that but only after a lot of fearmongering. If they were really afraid that I'd damage their precious pickup truck, they should have just given me a cheap economy car - it was manager's choice after all! Although the rental was "free" with my airline booking, the agent ignored the booking, upgraded our car without OK'ing with me, didn't respond to my request for no insurance, telling me it comes with standard insurance package. Absolutely the worst Rental Car company! I rent a car for my elderly parents, but when they arrived at the Dollar Rental Car location no cars were available. They waited an hour with no place to sit and still no car. They had to pay for an Uber to their hotel and come back the next day. Instead of crediting us back for the day we did not get the car let alone offering a credit to offset the cost of the Uber...this is the response we got when requesting a fair outcome (credit for the day we did not get the car and cost of the Uber to the hotel due to not having a car to drive) to their issue of them not having a car... "We apologize for the delay in releasing our rental vehicle. I understand this is not what you were expecting prior to your arrival. Although our reservation system is designed to provide a vehicle at the time and place requested, situations can sometimes develop that prevent us from honoring a reservation on time. I rented a vehicle with this Dollar Rental Car location and got pushed to accept a large SUV when I rented a compact. I refused so waited until a car finally became available that wasn't a large vehicle (I ended up with a sedan). During the first day of driving the remote's battery had trouble working, we presumed from the battery. I was concerned about the remote might stop working and leave us stranded without getting into the car or starting it (there was no physical key, nor did the car have a slot/hole for a key). After spending time on the phone with customer support, I could either return the car or get roadside assistance. Since we were hours away from the airport, we opted for neither and replaced the battery at our own cost. We were told to have mention it up return to get reimbursed. We replaced the battery, which corrected the issue. Upon return of the car, we mentioned it and it was written up on the car. We were told it would be taken off the final charges. Obviously, I'm here writing that there was no reimbursement of our out of pocket charges. The renter should not need to take their own time and money to do basic maintenance of the rented vehicle to keep it operational. Despite being told that I'd be reimbursed for these charges, I haven't been. It's just a remote's battery but it is required to get access into the car and start the ignition. read more

On top of $741 charge, they also charged an ADDITIONAL $200 security - this is price gouging. You can't make a same day reservation elsewhere for a car on AAA, or Hertz, or Enterprise - so we literally had no other options but to be held financially hostage. A shame that I didn't read the specific employee's name tag, but some family and I had a HORRIBLE experience here with a woman who looked like she was in her 60s. We were renting a car for a road trip to Blowing Rock and were on a tight timeframe, and when we arrived the lady working the desk was not at all friendly and didn't even greet us. We showed her that we rented a Kia Nero, and then she snarkily replied "You'll have a hard time finding charging stations here". Have been to this airport several times over the past three decades. On this most recent visit, I was glad to see only one person in line as we approached the rental kiosk. Somehow, the clerk managed to take 40 minutes to help the person in front of her, and then another 30 minutes to help the person after that. Luckily, a clerk at the Hertz counter finished his line waved us over to his line. He was able to get us in and out in 5 minutes. Yes, it is the same company, so clearly, there is a training or personnel issue at hand. He sent us on our way to pick up our vehicle. As in previous experiences, he pointed out the lot where out car could be found and let us know the keys would be in the car. All we had to do was choose the vehicle and be on our way. Instead, what we found when we got to the parking lot was a massive line. When I attempted to go to the location where my car should be parked, the Dollar employee there yelled at me to get in the line. So instead of letting us just get in our vehicles and go, he insisted on looking at each customer's receipt, then walking off somewhere. Likely because they did not have that particular vehicle. And returning some 5 or 10 minutes later with a car. Sometimes he would just stand there oblivious with no idea what to do while a line of customers waited. He would do this for each customer. Limping off to some location to drive the car back to the line so each customer can drive off. We waited an hour in this line just to get our car. As we drove off, the line was twice as long as when we had arrived. I feel sorry for those customers. All together the total wait time or was over 2 hours just to pick up a car. Not acceptable. Nearly ten years, and I'm back to review my latest experience with the Dollar Car Rental at CLT. Much has changed since then and it's fair to update one of my oldest reviews. No more shuttle buses, the airport has moved all of the on-site rental agencies into the parking deck that is directly opposite the terminal. A very short walk and here you are. If you have status (Dollar Express is FREE!) then you can skip the entire counter experience and go directly to the lot to get your car. I was only returning today and the return process is easy. Carefully follow the signs to find the rental car area, which can be confusing so proceed at an appropriate pace. It's one of the last lefts after the short term parking before you get to the arrivals ramp. Dollar is up the ramp and follow the sign to their drop. The young lady who checked in my car was polite. She confirmed my name, asked if there were any issues with the Chevy Malibu (which I had picked up in Orlando, 1200 miles ago!) and inquired if I wanted a printed receipt or emailed. I took my usual pictures of the outside of the car and I was on my way. Not even three minutes. Nice scam company. I booked a reservation via a third party. When I got to the counter to pick up the vehicle, their rep said I am fully paid and will owe nothing more. A deposit was placed on hold/pending. That is fine. When I returned the vehicle, the deposit disappeared and then Dollar charged me $306 which posted to my account. When I called in, they said that the $306 accounts for fees, taxes and insurance. This is misleading and false advertising. I reserved the vehicle weeks in advance and checked in the day before we arrived in Charlotte taking the time to upload a drivers license and credit card for contactless pickup. About an hour prior to landing in Charlotte I began the process of selecting a vehicle available for the size I prepaid for. The Dollar website was down and long story short, I waited in line for over an hour to get a car assigned. I reserved a Full Size Car (Chevrolet Malibu or equivalent). I was assigned a Hyundai Sonata. The man at the front desk was very nice and very pleasant to speak with aside from trying to sell me on an upgrade. The car looked nice but had a very strong odor like ammonia and definitely had some maintenance issues. Brakes pulsating, clunking sound in the rear suspension, and poor tire condition. Car should've been repaired or replaced. Not the cleanest car I've ever rented either, looked like a sloppy and quick cleaning (could see marijuana residue in the usb ports and had trash on the floor). Overall, waiting for an hour in line to check out a rental car is unacceptable, the maintenance issues show that the company has some serious quality control problems, and the cleaning issue is just annoying. Very disappointed with this experience and I don't recommend using this company despite being cheaper than others. read more

After reading the previous reviews, I was expecting to battle previous damage claims to the car and made sure to take photos and video to be sure. And then I filled out a paperwork thing detailing the previous damage just in case. Every car had tons of minor dings and scrapes as well as not being fully cleaned on the interior which is something I've never experienced using Dollar. The car I took had the least amount of dings due to it being a smaller car (Kia Soul) but the interior had scrapes and a dirty spot on the passenger seat. The exterior was just washed before my pickup because the car was still wet. My drop off was a little slow because there was only one lady doing it and tons of people dropping off back to back. However she printed my receipt and emailed me a copy and I was on my way. read more

If you're wondering why this rental car company has such a low rating, I can help explain. We rented the manager special weeks before arriving at the airport. When we get to the counter to pick up the car, the counter rep tells us that it is an EV. Electric vehicle. There are apparently very few charging stations in the vicinity. They strongly, strong, strongly recommended that we replace the EV with a gas powered car. To do this it costs an extra $55 per day. But she would reduce to extra $25 per day. How ridiculous is that? It's 10:00pm at night and the car is still at the service center getting a car wash. There was an additional 20 minute wait time for the vehicle plus the other 15 minutes because only one staff was on site while there's a line of 6 people in queue. There's a reason why there's a time pickup menu when we book on the website. Time management and efficiency is questionable here. Customer service is sub par. You're lucky if you even get a grin. Husband and I needed a rental vehicle while we were in North Carolina for a family wedding. We booked our rental online and paid through affirm, the total was roughly $500. Now that was on top of the $500 we had already paid when we booked the rental... The 300+ dollars that we owed at the time was for insurance, The largest portion of the bill was for something in regards to us agreeing that the company was waving any liability for us having the vehicle.... I just... i'll be honest I have never rented a vehicle in my life, I mostly just use Uber or whatever but after this experience I will definitely go with hurts from now on. Husband originally did not go with her it's because he said they were pricey but after paying over $800 for one vehicle for three days and three nights, I'd rather just go with the better service. This is a review I sent to Dollar car rental. First of all there was nothing in the car to be able to recharge the battery at the location where I stayed so I was forced to find an EV charging station. I drove 20 miles round-trip to find the charging station and when I plugged it in it would've taken eight hours to recharge it and I was pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I was instructed to drive an additional 10 miles to a fast charging station. It took an hour and 20 minutes to recharge it and it only charged to 73% and would not charge beyond that. when I picked up the car it was charged to 73% but the return contract says when I picked it up, it was 91% charged which was not the case. I was charged $51 extra for bringing it back 33% charged. I drove 40 miles RT to find an adequate CHARGING STATION and it TOOK A TOTAL OF TWO HOURS of my time. I want to know what you're going to do about that and I would add further if you're going to use electric vehicles as rentals you have to create a much more convenient and reasonable way for customers to recharge like including a way to charge it overnight at the location where I was staying.
