This place was about 1/3rd of a typical Costco, but all Asian centric products. Produce selection was vast and appreciated. Snack game was on point. So many sauces, and in sizes you never see at a grocery store, so that was amazing. The thing that threw us off was the meat quality. Again, selection was vast, but we found the meat looked sad and old. This is somewhere between a 3 and 4 star, but a 4 star felt too generous due to the meat quality, or lack there of.

When we went to pay for our items, Jimmy greeted us with a nice smile and was very friendly. He seemed genuinely happy to be there. Tokyo Central...you definitely need more employees like Jimmy working at your establishment. I guarantee more people will return and become repeat customers on a regular basis.

Ebisu does have plenty of stuffed animals and the anime plushies with astronomical price tags, though. I had excitedly picked up a medium sized Stitch plushie, only to flip it over and discover it was well over $50. My heart nearly stopped. Thankfully, there are still plenty of affordable gems hidden throughout the store. My personal happy place was the stationery aisle- specifically, the glorious wall of pens. No, these aren't premium Japanese brands like Sarasa or Pilot. They're made in China pens, but they're outrageously adorable. At just $1-$3 each, they practically hopped into my basket on their own. I spent an embarrassingly long time admiring colors, clicking pens, and convincing myself I absolutely needed the extra whimsy. My inner pre-teen was beyond giddy. I'm pretty sure I reach peaked serotonin in that aisle. As an unexpected bonus, I also found corn sticks in the snack aisle- a snack I pretty much inhale. Between the stationery treasure trove, nostalgic snacks, and surprisingly solid skincare section (Dr. Jart masks for just $10!), this store managed to hit every one of my weak spots. The cashier was also super sweet! I can absolutely see myself wandering back in the near future- probably for sunscreen, skincare, and definitely not for more pens. Bummer lol Not to worry, you can find gift items here! They sell chocolates and candies from England. That's fun! They have bags, cooking mitts, and pot holders that are cute. The portions are generous and filling. This is a friendly and welcoming family-owned restaurant and market. The dining area is on the small side but you can usually find an open table. Order first, cash only but you can find an atm on-site. The hubby orders the 3 item combo and this time got a plate to go. I always order the pad see eww fried tofu plate and always have enough for two meals. We usually get the hubby a combo dessert at the market next door and he devours it at home. The Layout: Like most other Asian grocery stores, it is poorly laid out. Great Wall's goal appears to be to pack in as much product as possible in its average-size store rather than focusing on the customer experience. In the produce section, you can barely get two carts to pass each other in opposite directions. Same story in the aisles with shelves. All it takes is one inconsiderate shopper to stop in the middle and there's an instant traffic jam. The Checkout Area: Same deal here. Great Wall packs pallets of products all around the cash registers to try to get people to make last-minute impulse buys when this area could be used instead to have logical serpentine lane dividers that could control the crowds who have lined up to pay. Instead, people form long lines that spill into the aisle with shelved products, preventing those who are still shopping from finding the items they need. The Customer Service: It's fine, which is a nice surprise -- most Asian establishments have horrible customer service with bad management. Workers aren't super friendly nor will they go out of their way to help you, but they are quick and competent. The Selection: The produce section has a good array of Asian fruits and veggies, but it's not as extensive as other places. They didn't have the one vegetable I was looking for: rau muong (AKA water spinach or ong choy) during my visit. There's a large meat and seafood section, a good amount of seasoning and dry goods, and a decent frozen food section. The Prices: Shockingly, the prices were moderate to affordable. A nice change of pace in the current economy of inflation and overpriced products. The Conclusion: Despite the selection and affordability, the layout, overcrowding, and lack of good management makes this grocer place low on my go-to list. Last month, I shopped at the GW Supermarket location in Covina, due to the convenience of grabbing an item after meeting up with friends for lunch at Haven City. Even though Rowland Heights (and the surrounding areas) are saturated with Asian supermarkets, GW Supermarket is convenient if one is in the plaza grabbing a meal or a drink. It is always about location, location, location... I feel the prices are a bit higher than 99 Ranch or H Mart but it is due to convenience. I only needed to grab an item and looked around, but everything else was just so pricy that I just grabbed the one item. It seems with any GW location, the lines to checkout are always so long, and they had a few open. Parking here is always a bit tight, very narrow parking spots, and with the amount of storefronts is a lot. GW Supermarket would never be my go to, especially for the prices, the not very fresh produce, and the long lines, but it is convenient if I need to grab something if I am in the plaza.
