This is my first time to Dolly Varden as my work colleague suggested to stay nearby our hotel as it was raining on a cold and wet Cinco de Mayo Sunday. Their location is right in Hell's Kitchen near Times Square right in Midtown. Came here for an early dinner and although there were lots of seating options either downstairs at the bar or upstairs in the restaurant area, me and my friend choose to sit more comfortably upstairs in the dining room. I ordered the steak frites while my friend she ordered the seafood pasta. My steak was tender, juicy and very flavorful and I particularly like their chimichurri sauce. While my friend was enjoying her seafood pasta which included mussels, calamari, shrimp and full of fettuccine, she could not finish it all and requested a box to go. Our first round of Cabernet Wine took some time to arrive, we both found our glass to be delicious and complicated well with our large dishes. After our third glass, we both agreed we should have ordered an entire bottle instead. Service was good and polite. The space is decent size, with an outdoor dining area curbside built to seat a few tables in the form of a street car or Trolley. This would definitely be a place for you to hang out for a very long time. But also a great option for a quick bite before your broadway show or after show dessert and night cap. read more

Great hidden gem in midtown. Close to the theater district. Came here because they're doing 10% off a meal with your same day ticket stub from The Great Gatsby on Broadway (through May 2024). A solid choice both for food and drinks. I'd probably make a reservation on weekends, as I was barely able to get a table on a Thursday at 6pm. Happy Hour until 7pm. Service is efficient and helpful. Keep in mind that portion sizes here are gigantic, so don't order too much. I was here with a friend (both hungry), ordered 3 dishes and ended up not being able to finish any of them. Crispy cauliflower: really tasty; the pieces of the cauliflower could be smaller (to add more flavor), but it was a good choice nonetheless. Truffle mushroom flatbread: delicious; get it if you're a mushroom lover. Lots of cheese. Buttermilk fried chicken sandwich: this was recommended by our waiter. The thing is huge (look at my picture). Layers upon layers of fried chicken! I don't think it was the best fried chicken I've ever had, but the sandwich was good. Dropped by this time for Boozy Brunch. The Brunch Cocktail tree is a sight to behold! Five cocktails, from your choice of five offerings: mimosa, rum punch, sangria, spicy margarita, bloody mary. We tried each one and they were sweet but on the strong side. Our favorite of the five was the rum punch and mimosa. For food, we got the Smoked Salmon Egg's Benedict, Dolly's Grilled BEC, and a side of fries. The Smoked Salmons Egg's Benedict was classic, nothing less nothing more. The side salad, made of kale, radish, and coleslaw mix was dressed in a vinaigrette (raspberry perhaps?). The wow-factor were the home fries - crispy and well-seasoned on the outside but warm and fluffy in the inside. Grilled in between two slices of sourdough bread, Dolly's Grilled B.E.C was good but heavy - cheddar cheese and a fried egg on top of bacon and shredded short rib. I had such a great time here and our servers were fantastic! I don't usually get brunch but when I do, I'm always conflicted on what to get. Since I came with some friends, I was able to try the chicken and waffles from them but I had ordered the Eggs Benedict with salad, fries, and substituted the bacon with short ribs. As conflicted as I was on menu choices, I was so happy that what I got was delicious. It was so tender and juicy and full of flavors. The ambience was amazing! The music was notably very good. This was the perfect place to go after a show with my girlfriends. We got a night cap and had some bites, great way to end a fun night. Not sure how long this place has been around but it's a real gem in the neighborhood. The upstairs bar area is great for happy hours because, unlikel most of the trendy cocktail joints and pubs nearby, there's no thumping, deafening music and you can actually have a conversation, at least from 5-7. Reservations are very easy and highly available (hope I don't jinx us for next time). The happy hour menu is quite generous for 2024: $11 Old Fashioneds, Pinot Noir, and some decent beers, for instance. You can also partake in the $1.50 oysters during HH and the oysters are fresh and well shucked! The regular food menu leans asian fusion. Most things are tasty. The pork belly buns are just OK (not tender enough IMO) but just about everything else was good, including the wings and flatbread (more or less pizza). read more

I was looking for a nice spot to meet up with friends and have a conversation. Came across Dolly Varden in my feed and decided to make a reservation. When I first walked in, the downstairs bar area/restaurant was buzzing and was a bit concerned that it would be difficult to talk since the noise level was so high but they took us upstairs to sit. The ambiance was warm and welcoming and much quieter than downstairs. The service was good. We all ordered the Pinky Tuscadero for drinks and the cheese plate for an appetizer. The appetizer came out first and when the waitstaff came over to check on us to see if we needed anything that's when she realized we didn't get our drinks yet. The cheese appetizer was a bit dissappointing. Three big blocks of cheese and three little pieces of bread. There were three of us sharing so the lack of bread was really noticeable. We didn't have cheese knives to cut so it was really awkward stabbing the cheese and trying to cut it. For the main meal, my friend wanted to order a flatbread but they didn't have one of the main ingredients so she ordered the short rib grilled cheese, and I ordered the crispy cauliflower. I thought i would be getting a tempura style dish but it was basically cauliflower on top of hummus. It was ok. I think the ambiance outweighed the drinks here. My friends and I went to Dolly Varden at 1pm on a Sunday. We made a reservation, which I highly recommend if you plan to eat here. I tried one weekend to get in as a walk-in, and the wait was really long. The ambiance is slightly elevated casual, and the noise level was fine. I got the Captain Crunch French Toast ($19), and my friends split the Dolly's Grilled B.E.C. ($22). This is totally on me, but I should have looked up an image of the french toast before. Captain Crunch is my favorite cereal, especially with the crunch berries, and I was expecting to delve deep into a sweet monstrosity. However, it was just regular french toast coated with grated cereal. So in that regard, I was disappointed. I thought the french toast itself was light and moist, helped with a thin layer of cream in the middle. The ice cream was... interesting. If you're a fan of the Try Guys, they did a video where Keith's ice cream came out with a gum-like consistency, which is kind of how the ice cream felt. My friends both mentioned the B.E.C. was average, and nothing stood out to them. Our waiter was friendly and accommodating and did multiple check-backs. It was a late Monday night after coming out of a taping that I needed something to eat. This place had a cool name and on its website said it had an all day happy hour so I decided to go. Even though it had a 1920s theme, there wasn't anything that stuck out to me other than red curtains near the entrance. There was a party happening upstairs since you could hear the cheers. I had sat at the bar which had TVs playing Wheel of fortune. Even though on its website it said Industry Happy Hour Monday All Day, the menu inside the restaurant said it was TUESDAY that had the all day happy hour. That changes the vibe on things. Speaking on happy hour, they only had a bunch of drinks and a selection of oysters on discount. I ordered the fries, deviled eggs with bacon and the "never too matcha" a vodka based drink with matcha, cream and caramel. The bartender and the menu offered a mocktail version of the drink but I opted out this time. The eggs were fine but they did this thing where they put some of the yolk mixture between the egg and the plate like as a glue or for aesthetics. It made the dish a bit messier for consumption. The fries were great and I enjoyed devouring them. But shout out to the matcha based drink. It was perfectly creamy and not grassy but I could tell matcha was in it. What a great spot! We came for brunch with a small group of people and were seated upstairs in a very cozy booth. Their upstairs is quite spacious and it was beautifully decorated for the holidays. My girlfriend and I ate here before a show. We ordered the cocktail tree before putting in the food order, which was a pretty decent price (5 for $75). We got the following cocktails: Harlem Sunset, Rum Underground, Busy Body, Silent Star, Confidential Clover. The Harlem Sunset was the strongest of the five drinks. You could actually taste the tequila so it wasn't too floral. The Rum Underground would have been perfect if it had more spice in the rum. It needed a cinnamon or nutmeg topping of some sort to bring the flavours out. The Busy Body was my favourite because it was basically a coconut espresso martini. The Silent Star and Confidential Clover were both balanced and not too sweet. I am very disappointed that not all of the cocktails are available for the tree. We also tried Dolly's Rum Punch since it was happy hour. It was a perfectly fine rum punch. For an appetizer, we ordered the risotto balls. I didn't realize that the sauces came on top of the balls instead of on the side because buffalo and blue cheese are odd choices for risotto. However, they were still really good, but I'll probably still ask for the sauces on the side next time. For the entrees, I got the short rib pasta and my girlfriend got the DV burger. I loved my pasta. You get a large portion of food (tragically, I couldn't finish the plate). My girlfriend loved her burger and was pleasantly surprised by how good the side salad that came with it was too. After dinner, we also ordered the Island Outlaw shots, which weren't as balanced as the cocktails but they were still good. The space is really big and I could imagine it gets really packed on the weekend. We went during the week at 5pm so it was quiet. We ordered the drink tree since there were so many delicious choices. It came right away and we enjoyed all of them. Before visiting Dolly Varden, we skimmed through the reviews which seemed very very promising, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. I opted for a simple dish, the DV burger. When my burger came out, I must say that my belly was excited as I thoroughly enjoy a good burger, whenever I do decide to indulge. However, my bun kind of gave the taste of stale, and my patty was missing seasoning/flavoring. I definitely tried to push through and finish my meal, but I just couldn't. I've stopped by here for a drink once before and when my dinner plans close by didn't pan out I decided I'd stop in here with my partner to grab a drink and some food. Outside the restaurant you'll see an outdoor dining area made to look like a train car and once inside the restaurant on the lower level you will notice it is once again styled as an old fashioned train car with wallpaper, sconces, and furniture that feels straight out of a bygone era. This is the place to get amazing drinks! Their signature cocktails always hit it out of the park! I tried The Secret Garden and another tequila based drink off of the specials menu and loved both. They were well-crafted and tasted fantastic, not too sweet or too spirit forward, easy to sip on and enjoy! Now for the food, it was a bit of a hit or miss. My partner had the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich with a side of truffle fries, both were superb, but the fried chicken sandwich had two pieces of the chicken stacked up high, so while you definitely get your moneys worth, he had to deconstruct it in order to eat it because it was way too big to bite into. Unfortunately my partner's food came out long before my flatbread did. The bartender let me know it was on the way, but truthfully I think they either forgot to ring it in or the kitchen really dropped the ball. I was ready to just cancel the order after 15 minutes rolled by and my partner was finishing his meal. Eventually a server came out and set a flatbread in front of me and quickly walked away before I could look down and realize they gave me the wrong one. At this point it was another 5 minutes of waiting until the server realized their mistake and came back to switch it. The Margherita Flatbread in and of itself was good - fluffy crust, fresh toppings, but too little sauce, it's like they put no more than 3 tablespoons across the entire thing. I got truffle fries and wings. Wings were so so. I usually don't love truffle fries but was in the mood for them and I don't regret getting them, they're probably the best I've had. I don't really drink, so I got the virgin peary picker (can't remember the name of the virgin version) and it was absolutely perfect. The cinnamon sugar rim set it over the top. My partner got the fried chicken as per the bartenders recommendation and they loved it. Their sangria and harlem sunset (tequila, elderflower and hibiscus) was so delicious beautiful with a rose icecube. The coating on the chicken was super light and well seasoned. At first it kind of feels like a gimmicky spot for tourists to go after a Broadway show but they have some great brunch selections that left us full for about $35/person after tip and tax. We made a reservation for party of 2 at 11am on a holiday but it wasn't necessary as there were barely any other customers there until 12 ish. Out of the dishes we got, our favorites were the pork bao and home fries. Pork was juicy and tender, went well with pineapple even though I'm usually not a fan of savory+pineapple. Dolly Varden is a great pre-show spot for brunch or dinner! My friend and I came here for dinner before a Broadway show and the cocktail tree was such a cool menu item for drinks. I haven't seen this anywhere else yet. You can choose 5 cocktails and I highly recommend the Seasonal Sangria. Ours was a Pomegranate Cranberry flavor and it was refreshing and fruity. The food was good, but nothing special in my opinion. It's classic American dishes. The steak was cooked to a medium rare; just as we asked, so loved that! The grilled cheese was good too, but I wish it was hotter and had a cheese pull effect when bitten into. The truffle fries were amazing. I would totally get those again! As for the mac, the flavors were there, but I personally think it would've worked best with a cavatappi pasta or macaroni itself. However, I'd definitely try brunch here! I became familiar with this restaurant through social media. Seeing their instagrammable brunch making the rounds definitely intrigued me. I knew I was going to be in the city this past weekend so I made reservations for myself and two friends. We arrived into the city 45 minutes prior to our noon brunch reservation but unfortunately couldn't get an Uber or Lyft to save our lives. I knew we were going to be late so I called to inform them, and the hostess was kind enough to move our reservations back 15 minutes. Still allowing for a 15 minute grace period. We ended up arriving at 12:25 and were seated immediately. We perused the menu to be ready for when our server came over. A few minutes passed and Nancy came over to take our orders. We ordered a mimosa tree, and pork belly bao buns to start. Chicken and waffles, DV brunch burger and short rib baguette for our main dishes. In no time our mimosa tree and bao buns arrived. The mimosa tree was so fun. The standout flavors were hibiscus, strawberry, mango. And the bao buns were tasty. Our main brunch dishes arrived a short time after and we dug in. Came here the other night to catch up with a friend that works nearby. I did a whole google/yelp search for spots in midtown west because I don't even know where one goes for happy hour anymore and I'm not too often in this neighborhood. I think the basement might be a new addition to Dolly Varden with 'Dolly's Hideaway' which was where the hostess guided us after I asked if we could just sit at the bar. Same menu as Dolly's happy hour though so I was pleased and the decor is fun. Kind of a hidden tiki oasis. I ended up going with the coconut espresso martini. Slams hands down on the table. Lemme tell you. . . . this was one of the best espresso martinis I've had in my entire life. It was a very subtle tropical coconut vibe to it, creamy, decadent, a little sesame taste to it as well. I didn't just like this drink. I LOVED it. In love. LOVE. If you love espresso martinis, do yourself a favor and run here. My friend ordered the old fashioned and it was alright. I mean, it tasted like an old fashioned. There was nothing wrong with it but also nothing that stood out. He was genuinely shocked at how good my espresso martini tasted though and really had the same thought 'I had no idea it would taste this good'. For my second drink I tried the Dolly Varden punch and that was honestly kind of like a pineapple daiquiri. I wasn't mad at it. It was nice and refreshing and pleasant tasting. We came for a light dinner post broadway show. The waiter was so patient. We spent a couple hours there with a few drinks, and some food. The cod was delicious! Highly recommend. The salmon was also excellent. I also tried the fried artichokes which were very good. I wasn't too crazy about the risotto. Dessert! Must try the brown butter ice cream. It was really a unique flavor and so delicious. The mousse was mango with a beautiful chocolate shell. Throughly enjoyed our time there! read more

This is our second time at this beautiful roaring 20's traincar themed restaurant. We did make reservations this time. One of the things one of my friends commented was the excellence of the bartender the first time we went. You can go here for a pre-theater drink or meal since it is close to a lot of theaters. The greeter will ask if you are going to a show after so they can gauge the timing of everything. The service was excellent. The cocktails here are great. We chose to do the cocktail tree, which had a beautiful presentation. You get to pick 5 cocktails from their menu that are placed on the tree. Our favorite of all seemed to be the Harlem sunset. It was beautiful with ice shaped like a rose and a flower on top. For food this time, I and a friend had a burger. We agree it was a bit dry, asking for mayo and bbq sauce helped. Their Mac and cheese was delicious, and everyone kept reaching for it. The bao buns were also good. Another friend asked for wings and needed hot sauce for them. Giving them a five for decor,cocktails, and service but dropped a star for some of the food. read more
