I became familiar with this restaurant through social media. Seeing their instagrammable brunch making the rounds definitely intrigued me. I knew I was going to be in the city this past weekend so I made reservations for myself and two friends. We arrived into the city 45 minutes prior to our noon brunch reservation but unfortunately couldn't get an Uber or Lyft to save our lives. I knew we were going to be late so I called to inform them, and the hostess was kind enough to move our reservations back 15 minutes. Still allowing for a 15 minute grace period. We ended up arriving at 12:25 and were seated immediately. We perused the menu to be ready for when our server came over. A few minutes passed and Nancy came over to take our orders. We ordered a mimosa tree, and pork belly bao buns to start. Chicken and waffles, DV brunch burger and short rib baguette for our main dishes. In no time our mimosa tree and bao buns arrived. The mimosa tree was so fun. The standout flavors were hibiscus, strawberry, mango. And the bao buns were tasty. Our main brunch dishes arrived a short time after and we dug in. Came here the other night to catch up with a friend that works nearby. I did a whole google/yelp search for spots in midtown west because I don't even know where one goes for happy hour anymore and I'm not too often in this neighborhood. Anyway, this popped up and I know I've passed it a bunch of times before and have always been curious. They have a nice menu until 7pm of: $11 cocktails, $9 wine, $9 mixed drinks, and $7 draft beers. I think the basement might be a new addition to Dolly Varden with 'Dolly's Hideaway' which was where the hostess guided us after I asked if we could just sit at the bar. Same menu as Dolly's happy hour though so I was pleased and the decor is fun. Kind of a hidden tiki oasis. I ended up going with the coconut espresso martini. Slams hands down on the table. Lemme tell you. . . . this was one of the best espresso martinis I've had in my entire life. It was a very subtle tropical coconut vibe to it, creamy, decadent, a little sesame taste to it as well. I didn't just like this drink. I LOVED it. In love. LOVE. If you love espresso martinis, do yourself a favor and run here. My friend ordered the old fashioned and it was alright. I mean, it tasted like an old fashioned. There was nothing wrong with it but also nothing that stood out. He was genuinely shocked at how good my espresso martini tasted though and really had the same thought 'I had no idea it would taste this good'. For my second drink I tried the Dolly Varden punch and that was honestly kind of like a pineapple daiquiri. I wasn't mad at it. It was nice and refreshing and pleasant tasting. We also split an order of their loaded tots because my friend had to eat something. I thought it was over-priced for what it was. I just can't justify spending $16 on tater tots. But they were delicious. I liked the aioli and the bacon was scrumptious. I'd definitely come back and keep this spot in mind. read more

We came for a light dinner post broadway show. The waiter was so patient. We spent a couple hours there with a few drinks, and some food. The cod was delicious! Highly recommend. The salmon was also excellent. I also tried the fried artichokes which were very good. I wasn't too crazy about the risotto. Dessert! Must try the brown butter ice cream. This is our second time at this beautiful roaring 20's traincar themed restaurant. We did make reservations this time. One of the things one of my friends commented was the excellence of the bartender the first time we went. You can go here for a pre-theater drink or meal since it is close to a lot of theaters. The greeter will ask if you are going to a show after so they can gauge the timing of everything. The service was excellent. The cocktails here are great. We chose to do the cocktail tree, which had a beautiful presentation. You get to pick 5 cocktails from their menu that are placed on the tree. Our favorite of all seemed to be the Harlem sunset. It was beautiful with ice shaped like a rose and a flower on top. For food this time, I and a friend had a burger. We agree it was a bit dry, asking for mayo and bbq sauce helped. Their Mac and cheese was delicious, and everyone kept reaching for it. The bao buns were also good. Another friend asked for wings and needed hot sauce for them. I'm definitely disappointed in the hype. My girlfriends and I went for brunch on my suggestion and we were highly disappointed. First of all, I received a phone call the night before to confirm my reservation and to give me a list of rules about the brunch - I was surprised but ok. We arrived and I noticed they had a live DJ playing music downstairs. We were seated upstairs in the back so we felt a little removed from everyone but that was ok. Our waitress immediately came over with menus and we decided to order the bubbly brunch - bottomless drinks for one hour with an entree. Now one thing I noticed was that if you order the steak and eggs or the burger there is an additional $5 charge. I have seen that for steak and eggs but never for a burger. We started with sangria - we each got our own carafe but the sangria was literally juice. If there was wine in it none of us tasted it lol. We moved on to our entrees - all three of us ordered the steak and eggs - I order truffle fries with mine (another charge of $4). Could you imagine our disappointment when our food arrived that: we had the smallest piece of steak we've ever seen and our food was COLD!!! Not just one of our plates, but all three. The plates came with toast - the butter didn't even melt when we put it on lol. We informed the waitress who went to get the manager. The manager offered to replace our plates (and you all know I've said MANY times I don't send my food back), we all said no and plowed through it. My truffle fries were hot and they were VERY good. The manager did make things right and took some money off for the mishap but we ended up still paying $72 per person (with the tip) for food that we didn't enjoy. Never again. read more

An amazing hidden gem for brunch!! Got together with a few of my gfs here and we had such an awesome time. I can't believe this was my first time here and I've definitely walked by this spot a few times without noticing it. It looks small from the outside, but it's two levels and so cute. They were playing really goood music, so I knew as soon as I walked in that this was going to be a fun brunch. We of course had to get the MIMOSA TOWER, which was everything and more. She was stunning!! I love that they have different flavors for mimosas. I got the hibiscus, couldn't really taste the difference but it was still good! Luckily our mimosa tower was part of the bottomless brunch deal they have ($55 per person and includes an entree.. which for the city is honestly really great). I haven't been back to Dolly Varden in a little over a year and I experienced some great updates and others that weren't the best. I love how the restaurant is now designed in the lower level it changed from the looking like an old fashioned train cart to a library with nice mood lighting. I enjoyed the DJ that was playing music he made it Saturday evening fun. The bar staff was not as creative as they have been in the past you can see from the other pictures that I've posted that the cocktails had nice trimmings (dried fruit hibiscus etc) and floral stencils for espresso martinis and others. The drink menu has changed extensively as well so it seems like the restaurant is under new management. I wish that the things that sold well before we kept on the menu. I ordered an espresso martini which for the first time I did not enjoy and wings that were overly cooked. My sister ordered the Harlem drink that has the rose inside that was nice and for my second drink I ordered a lavender empress gin drink, lastly we both had Casamigos on the rocks, which was a nice finishing touchI hope that they reincorporate some of the drinks in the near future read more

Had brunch with my bf here last weekend, and it was pretty good. The restaurant itself is decorated really nicely. Very art deco. Feels plush but for everyone, almost like an upscale diner. Service was friendly and attentive. It was simple to make a reservation same-week. I ordered the eggs benedict with short rib (additional charge). There were a few issues with it that prevented me from really enjoying the dish. First, one of the eggs was overcooked, which is an absolute mood killer for an eggs benedict dish. Second, it was not seasoned well. It could have used some salt at the very least. Third, there was a distinct lack of hollandaise, which is one of the best parts of eggs benedict! I was pretty disappointed with this entrée, but it was edible. I would not recommend it to anyone. My bf, however, got the breakfast burrito, and it was really good. I had one bite and regretted getting the benedict all over again. Plus sides: the side salad was very refreshing, and the coffee was very good. They only have oat milk as a creamer though, which is strange considering this is clearly not a vegan restaurant, evidenced by all the meat dishes. A good midtown bar if you're looking for a few drinks. Unfortunately the food didn't do it for me. We ordered the short rib grilled cheese but I felt the short rib was a little bland. Love this place. First time here but I'll definitely be back. My family enjoyed the steak and eggs, eggs Benedict, short rib grilled cheese omelette, and I loved my chicken and waffle. My waffle was so fluffy! Service was quick - and we let them know we had a 2 o clock show that day. Make sure that you're on time because they won't hold your reservation after 15 minutes. And make sure all members of your party are there as well. We loved the Chicago the Musical special drinks and my Mai Way. I'll definitely be back to see what other musical-inspired drinks they'll do. They even had a discount if you showed your ticket stub for Chicago. My only two suggestions is make the women's bathroom a little brighter. I don't have any visual impairment but the stall section specifically is dark and I couldn't see as well once I was in them. I was clawing around trying to replace the toilet paper holder since it was empty. I get that it's setting the ambiance but even my teenage niece said she just wanted to wait to use the restroom at the theater because she couldn't see anything in the bathroom. And the other point is that maybe they could spread out the parties so there aren't three booths in succession? Maybe it's a server designated thing (we only saw our one waitress go to all three booths...we were upstairs) which I get but it was hard to talk seated between two booths. Definitely not policing anyone's volume because we were ALL enjoying the amazing music with some nice throwbacks, but with one group of women catching up on one side (coincidentally they kept talking about someone who shared the unique name of someone in our party which made us laugh) and the other side happily grooving to the mix, it kind of feel like we had to talk loudly within our own booth just to hear each other. The volume of the music and restaurant itself was fine but it was just a lot when we were clustered in the same spot when other booths were free in the same row. Very cute spot. Stopped in after attending a show at Radio City. It was walking distance and opened late. We grabbed some mushroom flatbread that was yummy and calamari that was also yummy. They have two mocktails that they serve during the summer (two additional warm mocktails they serve during cold weather months). When I went to Dolly Varden to meet a relative who was visiting town for brunch, the restaurant's first floor was under construction (or just otherwise closed off), so we were pointed upstairs to be seated. Service was quick throughout the ordering process, and the food came swiftly. We were not checked on as much after for drink refreshers, but they were busy, and we appreciated being left to converse. The plates were large. I ordered their special rendition of a BEC (bacon, egg, and cheese), which arrived with sides of salad and home fries, and my uncle ordered the steak frites and eggs entree, which he was a bit disappointed to find served with more potatoes than steak, but by Manhattan standards, I told him this was pretty customary. Altogether, the food was alright and rather pricey, but again, one must consider midtown Manhattan standards. The art deco theme of the restaurant was ruined by blaring top 40 radio. I wish there had been era appropriate instrumental jazz to contribute to the setting. While I wanted to visit mainly to see the restaurant, I'm not sure I'd return. There are similar establishments in the area, so I think I'll keep moving down the list. read more

This was one of the best brunches I've ever had! The area I walked into was dimly lit and had music playing softly that was a nice mix of everything so everyone could enjoy. There was a high, long bar with seats for the whole length. There were about 3 booths and about 3 tables in this area also. I sat at the bar and had wonderful service from Michael. He was welcoming, friendly, attentive, and was the perfect guide to my 24 hour trip to NYC. I watched Michael give this same type of service to each of his customers. He made sure each bite and sip was absolutely perfect and up to a 5-star standard. To drink, I had to try the epic mimosa tree. The tree was breathtaking to look at and the drinks (orange, pineapple, strawberry, hibiscus, lavender) were unique and delicious. Two of the drinks were made with in-house made syrups. This mimosa tree is not an every brunch purchase, but I highly recommend getting it at least once for the experience and to be able to try all of the flavors. To eat, I started out with the risotto balls and the deviled eggs. The presentation on both of these brought a feast to the eyes before your 1st bite. The risotto balls were flavorful, had very little filler, and the breading was crispy but not heavy. The buffalo sauce complemented the risotto balls nicely. The deviled eggs were rich and creamy. For my main, I had the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict and an order of candied bacon. The Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict had complex flavors and the eggs were poached perfectly. I do wish that this benedict came with more hollandaise and possibly a 3rd poached egg as it could have used a bit more moisture/liquid for the size of the english muffins and salmon provided. The salad that the benedict came with was refreshing and crisp. The dressing was well balanced and unique. The potatoes looked like they were cooked properly and seasoned well. They are cooked with peppers and onions so unfortunately I was not able to try these but they looked and smelled delicious. The candied bacon was a massive letdown. A few bites had the sweetness of candied bacon but overall the bacon was just a plate of crispy bacon. I can't wait for my next trip to NYC so I can visit here again, and hopefully have Michael as my server. read more

I hadn't been to this place since it was the House of Brews so I was blown away by the transformation into a luxe cocktail bar with a cool speakeasy vibe. A friend from London was visiting and we wanted someplace close in midtown so this fit the bill perfectly and I was immediately impressed by the great service and cool decor. We sat upstairs in a circular booth and it made me feel like some type of glamorous Hollywood star, like a modern day Ernest Borgnine! We started with some great cocktails (I had a tasty Wooden Nickel-House Blend of Bourbon and Rye, Demerara, Orange Bitters) that tasted amazing but at around $17 each, were not easy on the wallet. We also had some small plates, pork belly bao buns, beef carpaccio, fried artichokes, burrata which were all very good. Amazing brunch joint. We were walking from the subway to the hotel and got turned around and walked about a mile out of our way. What a fortuitous accident. At that point we were both hot and thirsty and right in front of this place. We asked to be seated outside and ha a lovely semi private booth. My friend and I had a mind blowingly good galentines celebration here! While this review is going to get into the food, I'd be remiss to not mention that the staff here are truly incredible people. Our waiter David was amazing and just the sweetest person, as are all of the women working at the hostess station. When I called to confirm whether they still had their outdoor heated railcar, they said they did but that we would have to order at the bar and then take food out there. While I normally would be fine with that compromise, Dolly Varden has six steps and both my friend and I have mobility disabilities, plus I need to eat outdoors due to COVID-19 risk factors. When I explained all this, the hostess agreed to make an exception. I would have been happy just to order and get my food but David went out of his way to check on us and really was so thoughtful about giving us the same experience as anyone who could eat inside. Now onto the food! I've been here a few times and normally I find the food good but not mine blowing. I'm not kidding when I say I was blown away by their Valentine's Day menu. This is a must!!$45 gets you an entree and an app or dessert. And not just any entree but a filet mignon with mashed potatoes and asparagus and a fra diavolo pasta with lobster and other seafood. We decided to try both entrees, and the pasta was truly special. We also really loved the burrata small plate and the chocolate mousse dessert, but will be dreaming of that pasta forever and ever. I had to do the traditional New Year brunch with my friends and I've been wanting to try this place for a while. Pro: the hostess was so nice. I should've gotten her name but she was really pleasant. My steak was also tender which is always a plus. Cons: they ran out of most of their sharing meals due to the NYE weekend.
