I have been here several times when it was formally known as Don coqui. It's same owners but remodeled and new name. I guess no longer part of a franchise and Rene owns it outright. Good for him. I have NEVER had a bad experience here. The food is delicious. The atmosphere is a happy one. Rene and his mom are very courteous and always on the floor making sure you have a good experience. Im telling you you have to come out here. Try a buffet style spanish brunch and also come up for a friday or Saturday night of Fun. Im sure you will enjoy it. I booked a last minute reservation here for a large party here recently & the staff were very kind & accommodating! I believe this is both a bar & restaurant so there was a DJ playing music throughout the duration of our dinner. My party & I had a pre-fixed menu for our dinner & paid about $55 or so for our meal. The meal included 2 pitchers of soda, 2 plates of appetizers, one entree per person, & a dessert platter. The appetizers were subpar & not really out of this world, same thing with my entree which was the half chicken with mashed potatoes, & the dessert platter consisted of 6 1/4 cut pieces of a variety of cheesecake; needless to say that the food was underwhelming. The pre-fixed menu in my opinion is not worth the price considering the portion size & taste of the options, but the staff treated us well & the restaurant space was put together nicely. Came to Don Coqui for a friends birthday in October 2022 and was really excited for the experience. Unfortunately, that excitement wore off very quickly. We had a party of 16 people at dinner, we all ordered drinks and food-- it took OVER AN HOUR to get our food out to us. Members from the party opted to LEAVE because of this wait while others left as soon as the food came out. I completely understand it may have been a busy night but waiting over an hour for food is ludicrous. I've been to very busy restaurants but have never experienced something like this. Not to mention, the staff knew it was a birthday celebration and they did not sing happy birthday to our friend who was VERY upset at the service that was being provided. That was a tough moment when we saw others around us getting the happy birthday treatment and she was practically ignored. After we paid well over $1K for the dinner, I asked to speak to the manager about our grievances. I can't remember his name but he was already on the defensive when I started speaking and wouldn't let me talk at first. Came here, there is street metered parking available. 9-9 is paid parking. After 9 it's free if I'm not mistaken. Came through the main doors, into a nice entrance with a nice illuminated chandelier and mood lighting to greet you. I wait and was directed in. The aesthetic of the main entrance, to the walk way passing the first bar and restaurant area is nice. But once you get into the dance floor you loose a little bit of it. Since it's usually dark there you don't notice it. But when you get to the second bar area, you pick it back up in my opinion. I have been here a few times before the food isn't bad, portion sizes are descent and the drinks are typically good. Every thing even before the pandemic and especially now is just a little over priced in my opinion for what you get. I did have drink specials and when that was over they went to a happy-hour, cash only bar without really any notice or heads up which I didn't like. Because I didn't have cash. They do have an ATM on the premise from what I was told. I might come back here with a group again, but not by myself. I made the best of it. However the drinks were over priced ( $17 for malibu with pineapple juice) and service was below standard. I still don't know why people flock to Don Coqui. Is it the so-called, less-than-halfway-decent "Latin" food? The annoying color lights at night? Shrimp Scampi (Yep...in a Puerto Rican restaurant) or the Grilled Salmon. Off I went- to make that dreaded phone call for a pick up order during my lazy Sunday. Person on the other end, tried real hard to be cordial- but was still rough around the edges. My mantra is always to be polite with everybody- especially restaurant staff. Almost wanted to say to her "no f*cking reason to be obnoxious". Instead.....I took a deep breath in, watched my tongue and smiled because I didn't want any part of a White Plains version of "Waiting" up in here. Early dinner was in fact prepared and picked up in 20 minutes. To be honest, my Shrimp Scampi was ok- however, my Tostones were limp. Mr Man liked his well-seasoned Pernil but complained about it being fatty. First and foremost, complimentary iced water wasn't provided with any meal and the only option was to pay $3 for bottled water; very unheard of for a restaurant of this caliber. Secondly, the music selection did not appear to cater to the millennial generation as only salsa and bachata was playing after 10pm. If you're looking for a nice hispanic meal, do not come to Don Coqui in White Plains. I placed a reservation for 8pm, just to make sure I was seated on time. Arrived, and the bar had about a dozen people and the dining area had 3-4 couples. After sitting for 6 minutes, I was finally asked to place an order. Placed our main meal order and drinks. One of the employees dropped off tortilla chips without any sauce. Why? No guacamole, no salsa, pico de gallo, ketchup, mayo or hell not even mustard (I dislike mustard). If I wanted chips without any kind of dip, should have just been offered Doritos from across the street at the CVS. Anyway, the mojitos arrived about 10 minutes later. The mojitos had a full sliced lime tossed into the drink and mint leaves thick enough to make it hard to stir your drink. No biggie. Some people like heavy mint leaves in their mojitos, some only want just enough for the cosmetic part of it. I neither care for either or but ask your customer what they prefer. 11 minutes later, the food arrived, fresh from being "warmed" in the microwave, I mean freshly made since the rice was barely warm, the potato salad was room temperature and the churrasco was room temperature. How is steak barely warm!? No biggie. I ate worst and I didn't want to start to complain. However, when the food arrived, I wanted to see my food. I felt like I was in an episode of Game of Thrones eating in a cave in season 7, episode 1-3, waiting for the White Walkers to arrive. I COULD NOT SEE MY FOOD! I requested to have the light be turned on brighter so I could maybe use all of my senses to eat, now that I knew the food was cold. They turned one of the overhead light fixtures at the next table and thought that would suffice. It didn't. But I didn't want to cause a fuss so I asked for the bill and to pack the food to go. The waiter returned with two to go plates (so I can pack it) and the bill. I was surprised I had to pack the meal but I'm no baby, so I packed it. I looked over the bill to ensure there wasn't anything added to the bill and I handed the waiter my card. The bill was $3.35 more. Why? An expense added to the bill for using a debit/credit card. How? Since when does a restaurant charge for using a card?? Anyway, I tried to use the pen to sign the bill but the pen didn't work. I asked for another pen and that didn't work either. Finally I packed the food, went to the front and asked for another pen. I signed the bill and walked out. Upon leaving, I saw and read the sign, hidden under some box at the window stating that the bill would have a surcharge for using a card. I used to LOVE going to the Don Coqui in New Rochelle (now closed). The Don Coqui in Queens, NY, also good. But White Plains? Stay away. You are better off eating at the pizzeria next door (which is really good in deed). The food was overpriced for extremely below par food. Service was barely mediocre. The lighting felt like a dungeon. Before I could even take a bite, the waiter asked how is the food? How??? I haven't even pulled the fork out the napkin to taste the food sir! Anyway, stay way. Went to this location for my colleagues birthday party. We had a menu to choose from that included a choice of appetizers which were average to below average at best. We also had a choice of dinner options. I chose the salmon with mash potatoes and veggies. The salmon was slight tough and dry. One of my friends salmon came undercook. But the waited quickly took it and gave her a fresh piece. The dessert was very good! We received a assortment of cake options. We ordered two pitchers of Mojitos, mango and coconut. I felt they were not good at all. Be prepared to have to speak loudly to the person sitting next to you if it's later on in the night as the club is in the next room. Sadly, this place seems to have fell off. Used to love coming here but the most recent experience was completely the opposite of what I was accustomed to. For starters, it took 20 minutes for waiter to acknowledge our presence. Second, never was there an introduction from the waiter. He simply walked over and we ordered our entire order since we had plenty on time to look at the menu. Funny enough, the hostess took away our menu before the waiter even came to our table. Once our order was taken, there was another 20-25 minutes before our alcohol-less pitcher of Mojito arrived. I've been here multiple times and the service is always terrible, people at the bar are not friendly, drinks are not that big of a deal and incredibly overpriced (mind you they dont even have the price of each drink in the menu which is weird to me) and they're just ignoring you even when you directly call for assistance. I came here tonight to celebrate one of my friends' birthdays - while I had passed by Don Coquis numerous times in the Bronx and New Rochelle, I had never actually dined at one of them. The decor and atmosphere inside was kind of what I expected - low lighting, music blasting, etc. The decor was nice; dark floors offset by white chairs and booths - it created a nice contrast. The bar area was separated by a wall from the dining area; this actually works well because the bar area can get pretty loud and crowded. The food was fine for the most part - we started with an order of beef and chicken empanadas. The flavor as alright but I've tasted better - the chicken ones were lukewarm, however, while the beef ones were nice and hot. I played it safe with my main and got the chicken and rice; this was better than the apps. It was a large portion and had a lot of different components to make the dish interesting, but for me it still lacked something to make it special. For dessert I split rice pudding with one of my friends - it was tasty but nothing special. Service was alright - no real complaints. What gives this place 2 stars from me was the combination of average food, okay service, and not paying attention to the details. I like Don Coqui for their Happy Hour. Its very rare to find good happy drinks for $3. Their frozen drinks are $3 and the mojitos were $5. They have a huge bar area so you don't have to worry about finding a seat. I recommend that you take the Metro North there since they are located in White Plains and you can really kick back and enjoy yourself without worrying about driving. 2021 Birthday AfterParty was spent here with about 20 friends in the lounge area. The ambiance, The Music was a decent mix of 2000 Hip Hop, Reggaeton and Carribbean Vibes. The staff, The service is great and the food/drinks were spectacular! Even when they are under staffed they make sure we are treated well.
