I noticed this place served omurice, so I got the lunch special shrimp omurice with Tom yum soup. I added in the banana egg rolls, for something sweet alongside everything. None of these items I had tried before. Tasty omurice that leans more towards Chinese flavors than the sweeter Japanese flavors. The omurice doesn't come with the unique egg that when you cut open oozes onto the rice. Rather, this omurice comes with a beaten omelette laid on top of the rice. The gelatinous texture of the Tom Yum soup wasn't appealing to me. I loved the banana egg rolls! Crispy and simply sweet, I want to try to recreate these! I can say you all were right, the food is delicious, I needed somewhere where I could eat rice or chicken and my husband could eat his ramen. I am an eater. I eat more than I should. I always clean my plate. If I don't finish my food, it means there was enough for three people or it was inedible. Welp, this place has reasonable portions, but at least 95% of my food remained. I ordered the Tonkatsu ramen. The broth lacked deep flavor, was thin, yet was still way off. The pork/chashu tasted rancid, though I could tell it wasn't actually rotten. The noodles were thick/chewy and eggy. The actual egg was flavorless and unpleasant at the same time. It was, of course, served with a super awkward ladle and a bowl of hot and sour soup. The waitress said, "You didn't like it," because my bowl was nearly untouched. I agreed I didn't like it. She turned to get us the check. I took the ramen to-go, let it rot in the fridge for two days and threw it away. BTW, it was only $1 less than Ramen Tatsu-Ya. Hubby had the beef fried rice, which tasted heavily of sesame oil. The meat, just like everything else, lacked flavor. The rice must have been brown rice, because the texture wasn't what one would expect from fried rice. He did eat his meal, but in the car said, " Please don't make me go back there again." At least I was served a warm flat Mexican Coke with a large glass of ice to wash it down. Hubby's wasn't flat, but it was served warm as well. I told the waitress that my Coke was flat and she just stared at me. To be fair, there was a language barrier. When we got home, I microwaved an Amy's enchiladas frozen meal. Then one day I was yelping to find a place that serves katsu after I learned that Papa Donkatsu had closed (and their new restaurant no longer serves it). Ordered the tonkotsu ramen only. They give you 3 pieces of chashu pork, more than other places. They also give you 2 pieces of egg, again, more than other places. I asked that the noodle be firm, and they did that well. The problem is the broth. When it was placed on the table, I couldn't tell whether the broth was tonkotsu or miso... almost. The appearance of the broth was telling. It was also very very salty, and I didn't taste the creamy tonkotsu brothiness typical in a good tonkotsu. I haven't tried their other foods, only the ramen. Finally, as I stood at the counter to order, it was very sticky floor. The bathroom floor was also had grime on it. The overall atmosphere is fine, but sticky dirty floors. We couldn't have been more wrong, this place is unbelievably good. They specialize in ramen and don rice bowls. We ordered the Inferno ramen, minced pork in a spicy broth with all the fixings. The perfectly cooked noodles have a slight chew to them which we love. IMO better than Michi and Tatsuya. The lunch special was less than $9 and came with a side of soup, yes your soup comes with more soup. The chicken katsu don blew us away. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, not too bready and served over a heaping pile of rice, egg, and onions, and yes, cup of soup. For less than $8 amazing doesn't begin to describe it. I love this place and I hope it's the one to break the curse that seems to be dooming all restaurants in its location since Noble Sandwiches moved. It's a nice change-up from the usual Japanese food options that you find at restaurants in NW Austin. It's all been takeout so far (don't want to inflict a cranky baby on a brand new restaurant finding its footing). Takeout and delivery generally can take its toll on a dish, but I've enjoyed every meal. They are very good at packing their fried cutlet rice bowls so that the cutlet doesn't get soggy. I've sampled my way through the various rice bowls and omurice. The fried rice in the omurice is delicious and had lots of slices of meat in it. I really like how they marinate their beef, which adds a lot of flavor to both the fried rice as well as the gyu don bowl. The curry pancake was a pleasant surprise. It is actually roti canai! The closest analogue would be Indian paratha bread or Chinese green onion pancakes (without the green onions) and served with a curry dipping sauce. As far as I can tell, no one serves this Malaysian dish in Austin. Hopefully my next visit will be for a sit-down meal at the restaurant. Great customer service! I ordered delivery through Eat24. I ended up with the wrong appetizer, and when I called to let them know, they immediately offered to drive over the right app. I ultimately declined because I didn't want to hassle them over a small mistake, and the representative offered to credit my card back the money if I came in or give me a credit for my next order. I opted for the future credit. I was impressed by their willingness to make it right without any back-and-forth. What I had: - Gyoza: solid gyoza, and perfect sauce! At basically $1 per dumpling, I think they're overpriced (should be closer to $0.75 per dumpling imo), but yummy if you're set on authenticity! - Curry Pan Cake: I wish I could tell you! A mishap in the delivery left me missing these and I instead got Crab Rangoo. However, the restaurant offered to (re)deliver them (even though they don't deliver and use third party delivery sites). I declined, and they insisted on providing a credit for the cost instead. Perfect customer service! Crab Rangoo: definitely one of the better crab rangoo I've had. You taste a hint of crab, it's mostly cream cheese. But I liked that the filling wasn't runny and the wontons were crisp. - Edamame: yummy! Fun place to dine. The atmosphere is simple, but the service and the food are the real deal. I dined here with 3 others and the customer service was great. I tried the spicy miso ramen and it was just as it should be - authentic. I liked that they included a full egg vs. other places that only give half an egg. We had the dumplings as an appetizer, but were a bit disappointed. The taste was fine, but $4 for 4 dumplings is steep (although competitive with other restaurants). Ambience - Very small store located in a small strip center off 620. When you walk in there is a small dining room and a large counter and curtain separating the front from the back. The decor is fairly standard for a Japanese restaurant. There is only about a dozen seats so if this place fills up then get ready to rub elbows with strangers. It has a very nice welcoming environment. Menu - The menu is broken down into 5 main categories of Don (rice bowls with proteins), yakisoba, omurice (omelet), ramen and fried rice bowls. Each category has a decent amount of variety of what you want with the main factor. Don bowls are normally just some kind of protein and veggies served over gohan (white rice). They typically arent very complex but this place did have some interesting kinds of Don's. The ramen dishes have 5 selections with 3 of them being spicy but the main difference is what protein you want. The other categories are the same way, only really difference is the protein you get. The do have a happy hour menu which is nice and varied. The appetizer menu is actually pretty big and they have a nice selection of soups. Pretty solid menu, sticks to 5 key entrees. Service - Service was ok. It was a teenage girl working the front when i got there. She asked if it was for here or togo and i said for here. She looked at me kinda funny, maybe i did something wrong. Or she was surprised someone wanted to dine in. I did notice that there was a ton of ToGo orders the entire time i was there. This place may be a togo powerhouse. Anyways, she wasnt rude or anything but she just lacked any personality. I was 1 of 2 other guests in the store that were dining in and there wasnt any interaction aside from bringing me my food and my check. She just seemed out of it or had her mind elsewhere. Food - I got the Kimchi Ramen as i love Kimchi and beef. It comes with beef, egg, scallions, corn, some kind of tall skinny mushroom and some purple star looking thing. It looked like a different kind of kamaboko but i couldnt figure out exactly what it was. Anyways, the presentation of this bowl was absolutely beautiful, everything is in its own spot and makes for a very colorful and appetizing dish. I mix everything up and start to chow down. I wasnt given any chopsticks but thats probably because im white and she thought i didnt know who to use them. I know they have chopsticks because the other table of the asian persuasion had chopsticks. The broth was a very simple and spicy blend. It wasnt overly complex but it wasnt watered down either. It had a nice flavor to it that had some mild heat to make your nose dribble a little bit. The beef was very tender and had some great dead cow goodness to it. The eggs are a little different than normal white eggs that had a nice taste to them that actually complimented the broth well. The Kimchi was pretty bomb thou, it had a nice kick to the face to make your mouth and butthole pucker. There wasnt alot of Kimchi but what i had was really good. The rest of the ingredients were to small to taste really and were there just for flair and color. The only things i could really taste was the beef, egg and broth. The ramen also didnt have a whole lot of flavor to them as well. But when you mix everything up and you get a little bit of everything at once it is actually pretty good. Overall my dish for me was good, nothing super special but it didnt suck either. I love the presentation and taste overall was pretty good. Overall - It was a pretty decent visit. My ramen was good but like i said it wasnt anything awesome either. I think i need to try one of the Don bowls to get a better feel for what this place has to offer. So my next visit i will do that. But the food here was pretty good and it is reasonable priced. Plus it is nice to have a new Japanese restaurant that doesnt focus on sushi. There are so many sushi joints that it is nice to have a Japanese store that focuses on other Japanese cuisines. The food was good and i was very satisfied with my meal but since the service was just "Meh" i can only give 3 stars. For the price, this place is very, very good. It's mostly a Japanese restaurant, with a few other Asian options. We ordered the Cheese Balls, Avocado Bomb, Tonkatsu Ramen, Chicken Katsu Don and Chicken Nuggets for the kid, all for under $40. We were stuffed, satisfied, and happy to find a new spot that we would come visit again. Everything was really tasty. The Chicken Katsu Don was a pleasant surprise, due to the fact that there was a delicious soft scrambled omelette between the chicken and rice. Very tiny restaurant doesn't even seem like 10 tables inside but the food was very well prepared maybe some of the best ramen I've had here in Austin. We got the lobster dumplings for appetizers and they were so good just wish it was more of it. They had happy hour going on which ended at 7pm it was discounted soups and salads and some selected appetizers. So far so good. This was our first time trying this place out. Small place in a very little strip mall off of 620 and El Salido Parkway. Walked in to a small dining area and even though I ordered to go (kinda a 'take out' type of place) the dining area appeared very clean and the hostess/waitress was very polite and on top of things. We only had a few items from the appetizer menu....egg drop soup, veggie egg rolls and the fried calamari. My wife was happy with the soup/egg rolls and I was very happy with the calamari. The calamari was not your typical fried dish, they throw in a twist of tossing them with jalapenos, green/red peppers and onions then serve them over a bed of crispy tortilla strips (which tasted homemade ). We will definitely be back to try some of the other items from the menu. It is nice to have a great kinda hole in the wall place like this near by. I want to preface this by saying you shouldn't order this expecting Tatsuya level ramen to roll up. Order this like I did, far from the comforts of the ramen power houses in the city, and just wanting something tasty that hits the spot. I won't share photos because I think to go presentation takes away from everything, but hope to go in person someday so I can update this review with them. I ordered the cheese ramen, lobster dumplings, and hot and sour soup. The cheese ramen was quite nice. The broth was lacking some oomf, but the bacon was a nice touch and perfectly crisp. The ajitama had a bit of an odd sweetness to it, almost like anise that I didn't really care for. I also couldn't detect cheese flavour, which I guess they must use American cheese and melt it into the broth. The lobster dumplings were fantastic and nicely presented. They are much smaller than expected though, are 3 to an order, and are made with wonton skin then fried until crispy. The hot and sour soup had good flavour, but the consistency was throwing me off. It's very thick and gelatinous, which made it have a weird mouth feel. This took away from the experience, but I think it could be great once thinned out. Overall I was still pleased with my experience and ate everything. Next time I wind up this far from home I'll be ordering again! read more
