The employee told me, essentially, "I'm not giving you anything. I'm not the owner. The owner is out of town for the next two weeks. I don't have contact with him. I'm here by myself. There is no compensation for you." My choices were to drive all the way back to the restaurant so he could make the quesadilla, or drive all the way back to receive my $11.56 refund. That means the restaurant made the mistake, but I had to absorb the time, gas, and inconvenience required to correct it. I wasn't expecting anything outrageous or trying to get free food. I simply asked whether there was anything they could do to acknowledge the fact that their mistake required me to make an additional round trip. There wasn't. What was especially concerning was being told that the person working apparently had no authority to resolve a customer-service problem beyond replacing or refunding the missing item, couldn't contact the owner, and that the owner wouldn't be available for two weeks. A restaurant can make a mistake. What matters is how it handles that mistake. An $11.56 quesadilla turned into a much bigger customer-service issue than it ever needed to be. A simple gesture or even an effort to acknowledge the inconvenience would have gone a long way. Instead, I was basically told: come back for your food, come back for your money, or there's nothing else I can do for you.
