Disgusting!!! Ordered fajitas on my lunch break and when i opened the container it was full of water!! My meat smelled weird, chips were stale, and sour cream and guacamole were also swimming in water ! Confused on how there still open the Health Department should visit ASAP!!! I would definitely recommend if you're in the area to try this place out. It has a very home cooked flavor in all the dishes I tried. Menudo was prepared very well. Didn't have an after taste I would definitely come back for more. David was an absolutely amazing server. Made sure we had everything we needed along with a good conversation. I have been to Don Jose Mexican Restaurant many times because of my social group meets every month. Parking is plenty at the lot during week nights. Wait staff were friendly and service was fast. I usually order restaurants' signature dish whenever I visit a new restaurant. At Don Jose, the signature dish is enchiladas. There are so many combinations to choose from. Dinner menu comes with rice and/or beans. I don't like leftovers. So, I order from the combo menu. Just the other day, I had #5 that comes with 2 chicken enchiladas, crispy beef taco and guac salad last visit. I like the plating presentation. The beef taco was served in a mini taco bowl with juicy and seasoned ground beef on a bed of shredded lettuce. Guac salad was fresh and delicious. I usually add some salt and squeeze a lime on the lettuce to jazz up the flavor. After I finished the enchilada, I use the chips to scoop up the melted cheese from the enchilada plate. Mmm... queso yummy. I tried the menudo once and I wouldn't recommend. It was watered down; doesn't matter how much seasoning I add. The staff is some of the most genuine people we have ever met. Time and time again the food is delicious and warm. My family has been searching for a Tex-Mex restaurant that has *perfect everything* since we arrived in Houston in 2000. Of course we did not try everything on the menu, so I can't offer comments on it all, but I will say that most of their food is quite good. The staff that we had interactions with were all exceptionally nice/friendly/helpful. Specifically: the tostada chips and salsa are excellent; ground beef is very well-seasoned; refried beans are also excellent; Mexican rice is above average; tamales are a little too firm; cheese and beef enchiladas are both average; guacamole here is nothing more than mashed avocados; Biggest problem: the enchilada sauce/gravy is not at all the "chili gravy" I want. My strong preference on enchiladas and tamales is a chili con carne gravy--not enchilada sauce. If they actually do offer this, I'll be back to try it. For now, the search goes on. read more

The waiter amazing and they become your friends and family. This past year in 2020 they lost two owners to Covid. They are sad But happy to see everyone coming back to the restaurant . I'd heard about this place and how good their flautas were, so being that it's relatively close to where I live, I walked up here for lunch. I ordered the beef fajitas off the lunch menu. Very good. The meat was cut against the grain in thicker pieces that were very juicy. Onions were soft and just starting to caramelize, which I enjoy caramelized onions. Rice and beans and pico were good enough. I did ask for some lime juice to freshen up the dish, and reliably received some lime wedges. One thing I would recommend for Don Jose is to work on the salsa. I noticed it was too tomato-based for my taste, so when the food came, I put some pico de gallo in it with lime juice and a little bit of salt, and mixed it up. It was just perfect. I'm a fan of a pretty chunky salsa, so I may be a tad bit biased. But other than that, Don Jose is a solid Tex-Mex restaurant. Good job! read more

Came in last night before they were closing. Ordered the enchiladas verdes and the fajita beef enchiladas dinners to go. Got home the beans were missing and the enchiladas were ground beef. Not what I paid for. Called back to tell someone. The lady said to call back tomorrow they were closed. Just called only to be called a liar. If I spend thirty four dollars and fifty five cents I sure as heck want my food to be right. You just needed to make it right. So from now on I'll go the extra drive over to Tia Maria's on Dacoma. I think it's only fair to also write reviews for those that are kicking their customer service up a notch despite The pandemic. This is the second restaurant that I have gone inside to sit down and have a meal since the beginning of the year when the pandemic started. I went well after the lunch crowd and before the dinner group, there is only one table with the owners having lunch when I came in. As I was sitting there after ordering and enjoying the chips and salsa, their tomatillo green sauce is the best! Only a couple of tables were taken while I was in there. I've been waiting for their fajitas for quite some time, they were so good!!! As I was eating lunch I looked around and everybody there was busy spraying surfaces down and wiping things off. No one was sitting around doing nothing they were all wiping down something making sure that the restaurant was staying clean. The fajitas were so good and hit the spot, I couldn't help but ordering some of their pork and chili sauce for the weekend. I was so surprised when I got home.... Don Jose's went out of their way to make my to go order just as I would've experienced it in the restaurant. It had everything I needed extra tortillas, tortilla chips and salsa. Not sure if this is any different from the way they do their to go orders I've always eaten it there. I just wanted to make sure to review a restaurant that's doing it right!!! Okay let me start with this place is not in the best area of town, dont let that stop you, once you're inside the doors this is a hidden gem. I live right down the street and have driven past for a year-and-a-half, tonight I decided to stop, one of the best decisions I've made. The service is outstanding, the food is on point, very affordable also. They have a large menu ( I know not usually a good sign ) not at this place, I had the Charcoal Beef Enchiladas and my friend had the Don Jose Dinner. The food was hot, you know when they bring out the plates and say be careful.... hott.... well you better believe them! Our whole experience was way better than could be expected...... Stopped here on a road trip from Houston heading to Mexico. We came in for breakfast, Mexican breakfast. We were hoping for chips and salsa, they told us we could have them for an extra charge. We said okay, and they brought us cold salsa and stale chips. Once we ordered they said they were only serving scrambled eggs, we were fine because that how we like it. I didn't even know about it as the only time I am in this area of twon is visiting my younger sister. When I called her she knew nothing about it either. Like any place, it depends on what you get, what you had before, and where you got what you had before. I thought I'd try something different, so I went with the flautas (one chicken and one beef). The chicken had no flavor and smelled like it has been out for a while, not saying that it had. The beef one was filled with ground meat, instead of shredded beef, which was horrible, because all of the grease just puddled at the bottom and it was stomach turning. I think I saved myself from gaining any weight, but I spent more than I would on a diet plan. LOL. If you've been going to any one place for a while and like what you usually get. I suggest that you stick with what you know, peeps! NOTE: I usually get the enchiladas. I always look for some good Mexican food when I'm down in Texas and Don Jose's definitely hits the mark. First thin I have to say is that the waiting staff are amazing. They are very friendly and quick. There was always full chips salsa and pop on the table. The good was great. The chips and salsa are freshly made with just the right amount of spice. I got a plate with a little bit of everything. Cheese enchiladas, beef enchiladas, rice, beans etc. A lot of the locals that seem to come here are older. This seems to be a well kept secret of the community. The only complaint that I have was that the room smelt faintly stale. This did not detract from the food however. read more

Came here for Mother's Day and have to say I get why my wife loved this place so much growing up. The restaurant has this old charm going on, and it seems like it's a real family ran place. I have made two trips here and it seems up in the air. My first trip I had the beef enchiladas. I wasn't impressed. This time i had the cheese enchiladas, and it seemed to annoy the waiter. I thought it was funny, but the truth is the cheese enchiladas are awesome. It came with the typical beans and rice, and the I loved the rice but not the beans. Even the salsas when you sit down. The red salsa was spicy and great flavor, but the green one not so much. others mentioned you can't empty a drink or a bowl of chips here. Well there not kidding! finally is the price. My meal was really good. My server, Javier, was friendly, very attentive, and accurate with my order. He was also timely in serving each course. The meal was tasty and seemed freshly made. I opted for 2 beef enchiladas, seasoned Spanish rice, refried beans, a beef taco, guacamole, and a queso puff. It was all very good. As a great accompaniment I ordered a frozen margarita which balanced the right sweet-tart goodness with my meal. As I savored my meal it became apparent to me that this is a pretty popular place in the area as the crowd continued to grow. A young family was seated the next table over and unwittingly offered entertainment like only a couple and 2 toddlers could dish up. The only drawback of my visit was as I was leaving, I paid for the young couple's meal and explicitly instructed the restaurant workers to keep it anonymous but before I could finish paying the bill they had already told the couple. They lady approached to thank me but by that point, what I intended to be a private act of benevolence turned into a bit of a sideshow that made the moment uncomfortably awkward. I was not pleased to say the least- thus a 4 star rating instead of the 5 that the food and service deserved. Delicious! Even during this time when it is hard for restaurants to keep up with wait staff and quality of food, Don Jose is still on top of it. They treat you like family and the portions are huge. I have been eating there for years and it only gets better. Definitely start out with large guacamole and chile con queso. I really cannot pick one dish to get because they are all so good. Maybe everyone ate at a different restaurant than I did. The service was great and everyone was really friendly but the food on the other hand had a lot to be desired. The chile con queso was mediocre, the salsa was not great either. I had the Don Jose' Special Dinner and it was a ton of food but none of it was that great.
