Checked out this casual Italian restaurant in Oak Forest. Don Monaco's is a longtime favorite among those around here. It looks like a pretty simple place with a counter and a couple tables. Actually gets surprised by people eating inside. The prices are okay for portions. Basic stuff on the menu as you can imagine. It's got a lot of the classics such as pizza and spaghetti. They assume most are getting takeout. Came in and was planning to get it to go. Then we were able to sit at a table. It's about $10 for a plate of pasta. Then you add a few toppings. I got the classic Spaghetti Marinara. Lots of stuff on the plate. It came with a humongous piece of garlic bread. This made us get full quickly. For sure it's great for quick bites. It's closed Mondays. This is located on Central Avenue in a strip plaza so it's not authentic but it's still okay though. read more

This review is for the newer location located in Orland Hills. We had tried their pizza 5 or 6 times (which is always hot and made as ordered). We decided to try their catering and ordered for a birthday party of 25 people. Ordering process was easy, staff was helpful throughout. We had the Beef, Chicken, Mostaccioli and Green Bean package. Order was delivered a couple minutes early and the delivery driver was great. Brought all in and setup. Food was hot, portions were plentiful. Plates, utensils, hot giardiniera and butter were included with the order. Everyone enjoyed the meal. We're all in some challenging times now and the exceptional food and service was appreciated. The best pizza in Southland. I just ordered a sausage pizza, and it was so delicious. The right amount of cheese, sauce and cheese. The crust is buttery and the right thickness. The seasonings are perfect. Tastes like a good Chicago pizza. Better than Rosatis and their paper thin crust, Beggars and so much cheese you gag, and Aurelio's which is garbage. Catering for my family event a few days ago was terrific. They were very helpful with the ordering process and the pricing was reasonable. The order arrived on time and the food was delicious. Great customer service. Our delivery was delayed due to circumstances beyond their control. The store proactively called to let me know. And then the driver had trouble finding us (we were staying in our RV in a county park), but he called so I could help him locate our site. We had a pan pizza, which is like Chicago deep-dish but with a thicker, buttery crust. The pizza was good with ample toppings--lots of cheese and not too much sauce--but the bottom of the crust was just a tad overdone, and of course the pie was not as hot as it could have been due to the delivery delay. We still enjoyed it though! Note that Don Monaco's does not really have dine-in service--just a couple of stand-up tables. Their business is delivery, takeout and catering. read more

A definite step-up from your average, carry-out pizza joint on the corner. Unlike other areas in the country, Chicago is LOADED with places like this that typically serve up a decent thin crust, tavern-style pizza... cut into squares (duh)... delicious. Monaco's pizza is an acquired taste.. personally, I love it. It's a butter crust, and it's a little on the thicker side, but I think it's fantastic. However, my wife prefers a thinner crust and a sweeter sauce. The real secret at Don Monaco's is the rest of the menu... really good, affordable food, that's most certainly a upgrade over other strip-mall, carry-out spots. They've got the garden variety of frozen then fried apps and chicken strips... but their menu is much more extensive than you might suspect. This includes a $6 Italian Beef sandwich that's BETTER than Portillo's.. huge, HUGE fresh salads that are loaded with toppings and homemade soups that are out of this world. If you like their pizza, than this place will quickly become your go-to spot.. and even if you don't, then the rest of the menu will keep you satisfied and the whole family is happy!! Last night we ordered (3) beef sandwiches - with various toppings - and (2) large bowls of homemade chicken dumpling soup.. the bill came in right at $30. You can't do that at McDonalds. Great food! Pizza is always spot on and very generous with toppings. Service is great - employees always so nice over the phone and in person. They do have a thicker crust so it isn't PAPER thin thin crust - if that's what you're expecting, go elsewhere. But if you're in the mood for great pizza and great service, give it a go! This place has good food but the WORST customer service. They make many mistakes then deny their mistakes when you call to complain. Once they delivered jalapeno poppers instead of an italian beef. It took an hour for them to return with the correct item after 20 minutes of arguing with them. They took the cold poppers back to prove their mistake. The last straw, we order every week, usually the same order; small stuffed pepperoni and onions. There was no pepperoni. When I called to complain, the phone person said he was the cook and assured me there was pepperoni on the pizza in front of me. I tore the pizza apart, no pepporoni. We then had to order from another place. You have lost a customer!! read more

We used this restaurant for a special event (for +60 people) and they accommodated us by delivering the food for the event on a day they are normally closed. Delivery service was good. Ordered a pizza and wings. Wings were great. Pizza was okay, it's just not the style I prefer. The crust is thicker and appears to be pan cooked. Because of that, I'll say it's more filling at least. The only complaint I've got is that there was way too much cheese on the pizza. The owners will go broke if they keep that up. I get overly excited about good take-out food places. But, when you decide to pay for food its such a good feeling that your money was well spent. I was tired of ordering from the same restaurants. Yes, I have some safe "go to" places, but I yearned for something new. I heard people mention Don Monaco's. I checked their website, first positive. They have online ordering, second positive. So I decided to try something completely new, Gravy Bread. Let me preface this with the fact that my disability has made a variety of foods difficult for me to eat. I don't have to put things in a blender, but soft, saucy, and tender are things I look for. Gravy Bread is exactly what it sounds like. Italian bread soaked in beef au jus. Imagine the best beef sandwich you've ever had dipped in the juice the beef is made in. Now remove the beef and dip the bread again. You have Gravy Bread. I could not eat this fast enough and I eat everything slow. I felt like I was eating a great beef sandwich without having to worry about having trouble to chew or swallow the beef. The au jus has such great flavor. Just enough spice and definitely not watered down like other sandwich places of late. I gotta believe if the au jus tastes this good the actual beef must be amazing. My son has had their chicken wings multiple times. They offer a wet sauce style or a dry rub in three levels of spiciness. He enjoys them very much. I've also had their lasagna. Lasagna is a staple item I use to determine how good an Italian restaurant is. I really like their lasagna. They have a very unique flavor that I've never had in lasagna. I can only describe it as a sweet hint of mint. Or it might be cottage cheese in there. I'm sure its a secret, but it keeps me guessing. In summary, Don Monaco's well worth the visit. I will be back and I will be trying more menu items. read more

My boyfriend and I just moved to the area a few months ago and Don Monacos was right down the street from us so we gave it a try and I'm so glad we did. We're the type of people that always order extra cheese on our pizza but you don't even have to do that here. It's SO cheesy and delicious as is! We've also ordered the toasted ravioli a few times, which is great too. Our pizzas normally take between 30 and 40 minutes and they're always nice and hot when we pick them up.
