The staff are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet in your life, and the food is reasonably priced and delicious. Some favorites are the Al Mojo De Ajo, the Chili Verde, the mini tostadas, the fish tacos, the Fajitas Mixtas, and the Camarones Acapulco. The salsa is always consistently excellent, as are the Margaritas. The service is fantastic, and the food comes out quickly. Don Perico is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Bakersfield! I use to come all the time when I was a child with my parents. I love how it's still up and going! Same ambiance and vibe. Our waitress was the sweetest lady. It wasn't busy when we arrived so we got everything very quickly. We got the Don Perico Platter , three cheese enchiladas combination, and the Casa Burrito. Their food is always top tier. This is our go to for delicious mexican stlye food. Last couple times that we've been there, things have been slipping with orders being correct. Someone is dropping the ball somewhere. There are a few things that I get when I go here. One is their Albondia soup. (needs to come with rice.) Second is their platters and the list really can go on. You will NOT be disappointed in the taste or quality of their dishes. We've been going here so long staff feel like family. read more

I've lived in Bakersfield for three years and have always driven by this place and never tried it until recently. The photos in the reviews look good and so after dropping off a package at a nearby business, I decided to pop in. The place is like your typical Mexican restaurant, with loud music playing and rows of big, wide booths. I was seated right away and the staff was friendly, professional, and attentive. I ordered a shredded beef taco and enchilada. It was from the lunch menu which is no too bad for the price. The drink was extra and I ordered a diet cola. (I can't remember if it was Pepsi or Coca-Cola.) The food took a minute, and my meal started with the usual appetizer of chips and salsa. I was pleasantly surprised that salsa was delicious, it tasted fresh and the salsa was spicy! Then my food came. I was excited to try the cheesy, beefy enchilada and taco. The plate came with the usual Mexican suspects, beans and rice! No surprise there! LOL The food is okay. I read the reviews after I ate and noticed that most reviews cited that the food quality and taste was going down. Sadly, I agree. It was not great and not horrible. Have I had better...? Yes! The rice was not fresh and was dry and crumbly. The beans were okay. The cheese made up for their lack of flavor and smooth velvety texture that you would expect from freshly refried beans. The taco was okay... the beef was meh, it was just beefy. The taco shell was so soggy and unfortunately, I didn't get to enjoy the crunchy goodness when you eat a fried taco. The shell was not homemade either. Same with the enchilada. The sauce was good, but still the cheese was the star of the enchilada. I did have an amazing experience there, however. I met a couple with I quickly connected with and we became friends because we share the same love of Ecuador!! For this, I am grateful. Don't think I will go back. I really wanted to like this place. The food server, on the other hand, was very slow to show up and when she did, she was in a hurry to leave and I had to flag her down a couple of times. Once, to get silverware. The chips were a bit stale and the salsa was pretty spicy. I ordered the Tostada Grande and the waitress had a hard time believing I only wanted beans and no meat. Had us sat down for 40 minutes without taking our drink order. There was a table that sat down a little before us, and had drinks ordered and served. What got me was another table was sat down 10-15 minutes after us and had a waitress got their drink order before us. Granted that we were a party of 17 and cinco de mayo, but we had a reservation. They did serve us chips and salsa. 30 minutes after we got sat, one of us went to the front to see if we can have a waitress come and get our drink order, but no one came by. When the host showed where we were going to be sat, it was 2 separate tables, so unless we gonna split our group, we connected the tables together so everyone is together. But the boxes were made out of cheap paper which resulted in our food trays being smushed and soggy in the center due to the packaging. We had to eat our soggy wet cold burritos with a spoon. I continued to come when I was dating in high school and first got married. But, unfortunately it has gone extremely downhill. I don't know where the pride of ownership has gone, but it's clear to me that quality isn't a priority with the owners of Don Perico. On our last visit the service was terrible. We waiting for what seemed like hours to get our food and I had to visit the front desk to ask for our check. Everyone's food at the table looked visibly old and greasy. The guac and pico de Gallo were discolored. The beef chimichanga looked like it was made with day old ground beef. Even the rice and refried beans looked old. My chicken fajitas were dry and unappealing. My husbands first margarita had a ton of salt resting at the bottom and the second one had a black thing floating in it. You won't have this experience at Loma Linda (cheaper), La Costa Mariscos, or Mexicali (similar price) I don't want to see them fail. But I wish these reviews would mean something to them. The sever was terrible we had to ask two times just to get chips and salsa and when we asked for refills, we never got them. We had a less than terrific experience today at Don Ps. We have been coming here for years and today was sadly our last visit. We love the food and the laid back atmosphere but we were very disrespected this evening when we had a simple question about our bill. We had started our afternoon in the bar but the music was just too loud and profane so we decided to move to the dining room. We enjoyed our meal and a few cocktails in the dining room until the bill arrived. When looking over the bill, we discovered that we were charged for our kids plates even though we had previously asked the bar server about the Tuesdays kids eat for 2.99 special. The bar server stated that the 2.99 solids special did not pertain to a specific area of the restaurant. After speaking to the waiter about this discrepancy a waitress came out with a paper copy of the kids menu (the one your kids color on) and showed us the $7.95 a meal price. At this point my wife wanted to just pay the bill and leave (never to come back) but I held firm (not rude either) and showed the waitress their own website which this information was published on. She went back to the back for another 5-7 minutes and came back out with a new bill. When I reviewed the bill, they had corrected the child's plates but the full price charges for 2 of our "happy hour" drink specials were listed on the bill as full price. I made a statement to the waiter who was taking my card payment that I appreciated them fixing the cost of the child's plates but there was still an issue with the cocktail prices. I then said, nevermind, "it is what it is" and handed the man my card. When he ran the card, he muttered something under his breath towards me. And the statement he said is the reason we will never come back. He said something along the lines of, it's sad that people like you can treat us horribly and we can't say or do anything about it. Now again, I stress, these were not his exact words. It is a rough paraphrase at best however, his point was made. He did not appreciate me calling out Don perico's, the establishment, for incorrectly charging us for items. And attributed that Inquisition to being disrespectful and rude. Up to that statement I was very polite. I was so taken back by what he had told me, that when he handed me the receipt I drew the biggest zero I could over the tip portion and signed my name. My name is Joshua Reichert and I always tip. However today and maybe two other times in my 40 years of living have I never tipped. This place will not see our business again. In the past 20+ years, I have visited this place several times. Over the years, they have improved in some areas, and they have regressed in others. Today's visit was pleasant, the place wasn't packed, yet it wasn't empty either. I came in to meet friends after a funeral. As I entered the bar area, I sat myself and shortly after was asked my drink order. In the photos you'll see the happy hour prices were in effect. Compared to nearby Mexican restaurants and bars, they are competitively priced. I ordered a large beer and shortly after was joined by my friends. The servers and bartenders were polite, attentive, and the music was playing on the jukebox. What reduced their rating to 4 instead of 5 was that it took them nearly 45 minutes to ask if we'd like to order from the menu (and I was hungry). After that, it took nearly another 25-30 minutes to receive bar food (nachos and quesadilla), and my buddy's order was wrong. It only took them another 5 minutes to correct my buddy's order, yet they didn't offer anything to make up for the confusion. The other thing that I was displeased with was the cleanliness of the restrooms (or lack thereof). I was able to smell the restroom as I entered the hall, and the smell was even stronger as I entered. Somehow, they have found a way to have pine sol treated water as their standing water in the urinals (very odd, and not appropriate), and there is significant wear and tear in the facilities (paint, rust, water stains, etc.). Overall, the food was good, and though they weren't the quickest servers, the staff was polite. They may have just saved themselves with a great rendition of Las Mañanitas as a birthday serenade to my friend. The food was tasty, and the beer, well, was beer, and at a good price. read more

He said he didn't care for the taste of the seasonings. My dad got the Chile verde burrito with rice and beans. It was smothered and really enjoyed it. My mom thought her Chile verde dinner was salty and took it home. I had the tostada salad with beef. It has guacamole, sour cream, and cheese. Flavor was good, but wish it had more veggies and it was too soggy. The tostada bowl just collapsed after awhile. The service was great. The place was not very busy. Just got take out, ordered a chicken Caesar salad with avocado. The avocado they put on it was black. When I called the restaurant was told that the avocado turned black from the heat of the chicken on the salad.... Yeah no... also ordered vegetable soup, that's on their menu. Was given chicken tortilla soup. When I brought this up was told that they only have chicken tortilla and albondigas, yet they didn't say then when I called the order in. Also the avocado they included with the soup is starting to turn also. I also had ordered chips and salsa but was told there's no need because it's included with the meals. There were no chips or salsa in the bags. Lastly, and maybe a bit petty... but also asked if they had limes. Was told yes. Was given lemons.... We haven't been here for several years and decided to stop in. We were promptly seated and drink orders were taken. The dining room was well worn. The ceiling was stained, dirty and had some wires hanging out of it. The men's room smelled like a barn and the patches and cheap repairs looked like it had seen a few Tequila fights. Now for the good part ! The server was quick, pleasant, friendly and was quick to fill our drinks. Mexican food is usually Mexican but this was a little better than most. The food came out fast and hot ! The portions were large and well presented. The sauces had excellent flavor and consistency. I don't usually pay attention to the rice and beans but I ate every bite of these. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted great.
