I didn't see any hand rolls on the menu but I asked about them and they have a variety. I chose the spicy salmon hand roll and it was really delicious. Simple with a tiny bit of cucumber but it was exactly what I had hoped for! I also tried the Futomaki for the first time (egg inside a sushi roll with cucumber and imitation crab) and ended up enjoying it. The egg has a nice sweetish flavor which tastes really good. I would enjoy some sauce with it but I would get it again. The hostess who brought me my food was very kind and had a great attitude. The ambiance inside is really drab. There is definitely a lot of space to work with but just needs a lot of design help. It just feels very blank and sterile inside. I would recommend it as a take out spot though. read more

Being from the east coast, I expected small portions based on the menu prices. I was happily surprised to see a generous serving of fish in my nigiri. One minor complaint is that the rolls had more rice than they should and the nigiri came apart very easily, which tells me the chef is not very experienced. Honestly did not get the hype. We ordered salmon poki bowls "Hawaiian style" (one of the three sauce options) and the server didn't know what that meant. We gambled on it but it turned out that they were filled with really spicy mustard seeds that were like getting punched in the face with wasabi in every bite. The sinus pain was actually enough to make me queasy. We also ordered a specialty roll, which was a California roll with lobster on top that was overcooked. We also ordered a nigiri, which was okay. I made a return visit to Don Sushi with some of the lunch bunch crew. There circumstances that allowed us to consider Don Sushi shall remain undisclosed. None the less, Don Sushi was out knight in shining armor. We thought upon arrival that there were actually closed, but, I pulled on the door and it opened. The place was empty. I looked around a bit further back, and found some staff. I asked if they were open So I motioned for the crew to get out of the vehicle and pay the parking meter. We ordered a plethora of sushi, a bento box and a bowl of ramen among us. The ramen came out rather quickly, followed by the bento box. The sushi took a bit longer to come out but it was all served together on a large board. Beautiful presentation I must say. Their sushi rolls are big. I mean, the pieces are large. There are a bit difficult to eat in one bite, but they are fully loaded. I will say, that of the five rolls we ordered only one of them fell apart when you picked up a piece. We ate our food so fast this time I couldn't get a picture, but we ordered: 2 Miso Soup 2 Salmon Tempura Rolls 1 Veggie Roll 1 Michelada 1 Sapporo To start, the miso soup was hot and delicious on this cold night. The beers/drinks were excellent and refreshing. Then, the sushi was also very good. The rice was fluffy and warm, the salmon was cooked perfectly, and the veggies were crisp and tasty. We ordered takeout through Grubhub indicating no soy products for the sashimi roll and no bag at pick up. The order was ready at the time promised, but it was in a plastic bag with plastic utensils. The raw fish in both the poke bowl and the sashimi roll are fresh enough, but the quality of the roll leaves a lot to be desired: the rice was too wet and the roll is not firm enough. The shape, especially the end pieces are really messy and shouldn't be served. My husband says the salmon poke bowl tasted good, but it also lacks finesse. I would say the food presentation and the prices do not match, but the restaurant is located in a business district. If I worked in the area & this is the only restaurant open, I would consider getting food at Don Sushi again, but would wince at the value. read more

I'm really glad I found this hidden gem. The entrance is actually on Third Street, just north of Silver Avenue, and there's not much signage, just on and around the door. The food is really fantastic. I've had several things on the menu, and I'd order everything I've tried so far again. Sashimi, sushi, seaweed salad, rice bowls with veggies & protein, noodle dishes, cucumber salad, skewers - it's all good. Moving to Albuquerque from the San Francisco Bay Area, I was worried that it would be tough for me to find good Japanese food here, particularly raw fish, but that's not going to be a problem. If you're a sushi snob, this might not be the place for you. For me it's very good, especially for the price. I prefer it to other sushi spots in the downtown area. I like the spicy tuna roll. They don't skimp on the tuna by cramming a huge slice of cucumber in the roll, which is my biggest pet peeve of sushi places. Before coming here, I was debating AYCE Indian buffet or raw fish...guess which one I chose? They have a sushi bar, so you can just step right up, have a seat and get a menu immediately. Staff are friendly here and helpful. Just FYI, The Monk's Corner Taproom that was next door is closed and apparently it has been closed for awhile. So Howie K left me astray... But although I could not get a Trappist pint, I was still able to get a Marble Brewery Double White. That definitely appeased me. I ordered 7 pieces of salmon sashimi and a veggie roll. I patiently waited for my food, but it never came. Finally, the sushi chef came to talk to me, he asked me if I wanted sashimi and then steered me toward their tuna. Apparently, their tuna is excellent and only a few places in ABQ actually carry this raw tuna. I have to say the tuna was fatty and super tasty, it rolled down my throat beautifully. I truly enjoyed. The veggie roll was great too! I hadn't had gobo in so long and loved the watercress. My bill came to just over $20, which is unheard of in my hometown. But they did have a lovely eye candy waitress, we have a dime a dozen back home and I miss them. I can't say the place had much ambiance. I did feel like I was eating dinner inside a hospital cafeteria, but hey, they were playing international soccer game, so I appreciated that. Give me a soccer or baseball game anytime and I'll be cursing like a sailor in no time. Thanks Don Sushi for making my Friday night super wonderful. It's rare that I rate a local establishment as only 1 star, but today is that day, apparently. We stopped in for a quick snack, just two rolls and some nigiri. We were the only ones there. So your guess is as good as mine as to why it took 45 minutes for the food to even come out? Don Sushi is not the place for me. The nigiri came first, after about 20 minutes, and to their credit, the pieces of fish looked generous and fresh. My partner said the fish was decent but that the rice was somewhat overcooked and pasty. This is not a great sign...if the rice at a sushi joint isn't up to par, it's probably not worth going. We could see the sushi chef working on the two rolls...but not? He had rolled them and was just standing there bullshitting with the server. i understand that he was waiting for the tempura to come out of the fryer, but it might have made sense to wait until that stuff was closer to being done to send out the nigiri. So after 25 minutes, the rolls showed up. We ordered an unagi roll and a NM roll, both of which I've had many times at other places. The unagi roll is fine, I guess, somewhat unremarkable, and I did note that the rice was very mushy. What was remarkable, and not in a good way, was the NM roll. The tempura coating on the outside was EXTREMELY heavy and greasy, indicating that the temperature of the oil was perhaps too cold. This did nothing for the texture of the already mushy and overcooked rice. And though this roll was sitting in bit of grease it was absolutely drowned in mayo. I have a picture but it's actually too gross to post. Very disappointing. I attempted to blot off as much mayo as I could and it took, I kid you not, 10 napkins and it was still inedible. Very greasy, very heavy. I hate to say it, but this is actually some of the worst sushi I've ever had. =( Apart from the ridiculous slowness, service was fine, if a bit absent. The server was pretty unconcerned when I politely asked her to please pass on the feedback that they put far too much mayo on an already inedibly greasy roll.
