The waiting staff has excellent customer service and we didn't feel rushed or hurried to leave (we were there from 11:30 to 1:15pm). I highly recommend the chips and guacamole and empanadas to share. I had the "Dilly Dilly" Taco as my main course (beer battered grouper fish). Don Taco is located in the previous Flat Iron space. I've spent some time at the Flat Iron bar so I wasn't sure what to expect at Don Taco. We made a reservation since we were dining with out of town friends. The actual structure has not changed: upstairs and downstairs dining. Our original table was upstairs but upon entering you could feel the vibration of the music and the loud talking. The bar is located in the same space and dining tables are close to the King Street windows. It was too loud, so they took us downstairs. We got to enjoy some intimate booth space right next to the quieter downstairs bar. Service was great. We had a very attentive staff member who explained the menu items and checked on us often. Our table was always cleared off, which is a big plus when your entire party orders large amounts of food. There was one point we had to set our beer bucket on our seat but it was all good: beer closer to me. We ate everything: empanadas, various tacos, nachos, chips and salsa, and nearly every dessert. My favorite dishes included the beef empanada, the steak tacos, the nachos and of course the chips. I didn't care for the recommended fried Oreo. It was too fried and the Oreo taste was missing. This place is consistently great! They have a great happy hour 5-8 (?) their guac is super fresh and the chips and always fresh and crispy. The staff is always friendly and quick, this is a great spot for lunch or a quick dinner. I came here for food couple weeks ago and I have celiac. They were very knowledge, the server even came back and let me know something I ordered had bacon that they made in a shared frier- I live for this because no one ever does it. First, let me start with saying I've traveled to California, Arizona, Texas and Mexico. The tacos over at Don Taco are right up there with the best. My wife and I usually stop by in the summer a few times for date night. It's a nice vibe in there with great music. The tables do fill up fast on the weekends. I love the tacos but my favorite is the ceviche. The food always comes out very fast and always hot. I'm more of a beer drinker but my wife loved the Jalapeno Margarita. Wow, just tried this place for the first time and it was a hit. Went there with a friend who's been raving about it. Among the best tacos, guacamole and chips/salsa I've had in the DC area. I tried the Fried Avocado, Blue Fin and Chipotle tacos and loved them all. My friend loved her Spicy Mushroom tacos enough to make a second order. A guy who I believe is a manager was always nearby, cheerfully making sure everything was going well. He smoothed out a couple issues with our waitress who started strong, but stumbled on a few points later. BTW, prices are great too. Small upscale tacos served in a clean, pleasant environment on King Street. Don Taco is a solid option for Old Town. On weekends, Don Taco features cheap mimosas at brunch time (plus a "man-mosa," which we were told means that there is a shot of liquor in it. Some of the names here a bit weak.) A margarita will run you $10 for a modest drink. They were fine, although I thought not as good as the menu copy might have you believe. The tacos are small, but feature great ingredients (though again with some odd names). You should probably order three, unless you have a light appetite. We had the salsa, guacamole (small is more than enough for 3/4 folks to share), chips and a bunch of tacos (surf & turf, shrimp, short rib, bbq chicken) and two empanadas. I've been here a few times and just haven't been that impressed, but also not dissatisfied either. I went here with my ex girlfriend who is actually from Mexico. So, she was able to compare the authenticity. We got several kinds of tacos and the flavors were okay, but nothing great. I got the carnitas and the pork had very little flavor. The tacos were tiny in size. I got 3 tacos and only had to take probably 7 bites to finish them all (and I'm not a big guy at all). I have seen some pictures where the tacos were much more filled, so maybe we caught them on an off night. Also, my ex commented that the churros were okay, but they weren't properly prepared as the cinnamon-to-sugar ratio was off. They do have a decent happy hour, but I found the mixed drinks to contain very little alcohol. (You get what you pay for...?) The service is standard -- no complaints. Would I go again? Yes. The chips & guacamole was delicious. For dinner, I ordered 3 tacos-the fried avocado, "Forrest Gump Bubba Shrimp", & "el gringo". I really enjoyed my meal, and it was filling yet tasty. I was excited for the change from Flat Iron and after many trips here I can't say enough good things. Food is fantastic and the only thing better is the staff. Don Taco quickly became a regulator spot for me and I find myself there almost daily. I would highly recommend any of the tacos but my personal favorites are the fried avocado and buffalo chicken. I would also recommend the rice bowls which are delicious. The chicken nachos are probably the best bang for your buck and can easily be shared for a great price. As for drinks, I generally stick with beer but have tried a couple cocktails and they are good. My only issue is the happy hour specials - there really needs to be a consistent daily special that I know I can go there and get. Overall though, I recommend Don Taco to anyone who hasn't been there. This establishment has changed names quite a lot in the past years.. if have to say that this is currently my favorite. Not too loud on the second floor and feels more welcoming than the previous names. The first time I stopped in, I ordered food to go and the Tacos were good but unfortunately my pork belly rice bowl was not that good... it didn't have any pork belly. Although I only live maybe 2 to 3 miles away, it wasn't not a big deal, I was hungry and I ate it. It was still pretty good, just didn't have the pork belly I wanted. Visiting from out of town and staying in Old Town and we decided we wanted to do something local tonight. Based on the other reviews we saw here, we knew that Don Taco would be right up our alley. The food is great. My first test is always chips and salsa. If you're a taco place and you screw up chips and salsa, the rest of the visit probably won't go well. Nailed it. Chips were fresh, warm and perfectly salted. The salsa...well...also, incredibly fresh, a great taste and texture with just a hint of a kick at the end. We all ordered different tacos, I had the "El Gringo" and my son had Chicken, and one with eggs and chorizo. My wife had the beef and chorizo sliders, they were also excellent. All ingredients were fresh and the taste of each item was better than expectations. The service was top notch as well. Our server was excellent, knowledgeable and helpful. He asked if we'd been there before and when we said we hadn't, he took the time to walk us through the ordering process...think sushi, but tacos... If i had one bit of feed back, it would've been our sodas. My son and I ordered diet cokes and it tasted nothing like diet coke. If i had to guess, it was coming out of a soda gun behind the bar that was not properly calibrated...not a huge deal..as I'm guessing most people are drinking tequila, but enough of a deal that you should know. The drinks were good. We told the waiter that we had a tree nut and peanut allergy, and he responded for us to not order the chicken mole. Fair enough, we typically know to avoid that dish.
