Date night at YBC. We yelped for a place "off the beaten path" from the square... there were only two other tables dining in an otherwise silent restaurant. Whispers seemed privy to the entire dining area. I figured this was only going to solidify it's "hidden gem" status. We ordered the kou shui chicken (aka "mouth-watering chicken"). It came out dubiously fast and tasted off to me, slightly sour, definitely not fresh. Since we also had szechuan the night before, we went with their "signature" squirrel fish. Do not fret-- it's only called that because the filleted , fried fish resembles the shape of a squirrel's tail. Like our chicken, the piece of fish tasted off as well. We didn't bother with the rest of it. Our green beans were super salty. I was really hoping for a great new find.. but alas we left indifferent. Visiting from San Francisco and found this place after reading about it in the NY Times. It's a quaint and cosy little place across the street from the Gates of Chinatown. Never having had Zidong style food I was intrigued. We ordered 3 dishes- Fish w/ two flavors; rabbit w/ chili peppers; Salt miners eggplant. First off, the dishes are beautifully prepared. Extremely authentic Si Chuan style restaurant. This small ma and pa shop reminds me of the local places I visited while living in China for several years during the 90's. Not only was it great cooking but wonderful service with a smile that you don't find in Chinatown. We have been here 3 times already and have not been disappointed. Portions are large for a fair price and food so far has been delicious. We've had the salt miners fish, the crispy eggplant in fragrant sauce, side pork with garlic, spicy beef and tripe dressed in chili, Sichuan style small plate chicken, pork belly with mustard greens, and Sichuan lamb. Stopped in for lunch today, and I was the only customer. Had cold Szechuan noodles appetizer and ma po to fu. Food was good. Service was friendly. I give them extra credit for helpfulness. I read some of the reviews after visiting this joint. To my surprise, I saw some people disliking what they had there and made some bad reviews. I can understand that, really, after all it is a very intense flavored cuisine and not every digs it even in the Motherland. Any if you are not an advocate to eating unusual meats and animal parts, do not come here. It was THE best hotpot I have ever had in the US. I mean, if you have had any good experience eating Chinese Hotpot, go there and get the Mala soup base along with your favorite veggies and meats, it will rock your world. The soup base was so spicy, peppery, mouth numbing and doesn't require any dipping sauce. It is just good. I have to warn you though, you would probably have some hard time the next morning....but it is completely normal after eating spicy food lol read more

We came to this place to give it a try as multiple friends have claimed this restaurant to have the best Szechuan food in Chicago. Indeed, it had many traditional dishes such as the spicy sausage and hand-pul noodle that u can find nowhere else. We ordered three dishes, the sausage, the spicy wonton, and the jalapeño rabbit w handmade wide noodle. All dishes r pretty spicy and flavorful but don't expect them to taste the same as what u would get in Szechuan. Moreover, the portions r big and the service was very nice. read more

Totally not spicy enough. Beef tripe was alright, it was chewy and could be less beefy. The yushiang eggplant was texturally not too squishy but could udr some deep fried crunchy edges. It just didn't live up to its spicy counterparts at other restaurants. The mapo tofu was probably the best dish of the mix. The tofu seemed fresh. The cold spicy bean curd appetizer was covered in chili oil but it seemed prepared last minute as they used cold five spice dried tofu and none of it had taken on the chili oil flavor. Very disappointing. I would come here over Lao Sze Chuan but it is no comparison to Szechuan mala spice at chengdu impression. Props for having wifi though. Had an excellent takeout meal here--a great Saturday date night. We particularly enjoyed the mapo tofu and the cabbage, which were perfectly spiced and had a great texture. And the restaurant threw in a scrambled egg and tomato dish (a favorite of mine) for free! Food is great. Super spicy (if you ask, and confirm), flavors you haven't had before, nice atmosphere, Quick if you want. I was here twice and both times waitress tried very hard to sell "American" Chinese food (there is a separate menu - make sure you're NOT looking at that once - ask for the regular menu), and then up-sell whole duck for the two of us. That said, the service is darling and sincere - just make it clear that you don't need tons of extras and you don't want the American menu. Hot pots, yup, yum; fat noodles, yum, and some super delicious rabbit dish that's on the first page. You'll end up with way too much food - one dish per person is more than enough - but it's a good foodie experience. read more

This place is a good, more authentic alternative to Lao Sze Chuan, etc., and it has better service. Very friendly wait staff. I had the Zigong Rabbit in Spicy Ginger Sauce, and my friend had the Zigong Salt Miner's Poached Beef. The Szechuan peppers really numbed our tongues! Also, we had the Spicy Cucumber dish for an appetizer...the garlic and spicy red pepper oil sauce this was served in was fantastic...I wanted to lick my plate! It's hard to beat some of the intense flavors you find in the Lao chain of restaurants, but they don't have the real Szechuan peppercorns. This place can definitely compete! Totally amazing! Do order the rabbit (什么鲜兔= =)and the steamed lamb (粉蒸羊肉)，the latter one will surprise you, and in a good way! The lamb is very tender and easy to chew, the flavor is very special. Steamed buns are not the best, but definitely enjoyable. read more

However we ordered several things and it was outstanding, hands down some of the best Chinese food I've had- second to homemade food from my friends from China! Yibin noodles = soooo delicious! Salt miner's eggplant = perfectly fried crispy outside and tender inside. Only complaint is I burnt the crap out of my mouth because I got so excited to eat this that I didn't wait for it to cool! Spicy cumin lamb = spicy and delicious and tender. Eat in rather than get take out. Apparently, the boy had picked up take out here before (I didn't know where it came from) and it was completely unremarkable. Went here with my friend during a trip to Chinatown. It had a good selection of options for my vegetarian friend which is why I picked it. She definitely liked it a lot better than I did (she'd probably give it a 4 star rating). She had a spicy stir fried tofu dish which she described as having a nice subtle spice. She also loves the portion size and the relaxed atmosphere. I had seafood noodle soup. My soup was buttery and delicious with a good variety of seafood in it. Certainly a delicious meal! But I found it a bit odd that there weren't refills on the soda and that our food came out a good 5 minutes between each other. That being said it was overall a good dining experience. Their cook is super generous to sprinkle salt to every single dish. If you don't care about the health of your kidney and heart, don't mind high blood pressure. You can take the risk to try. Their beer braised duck is faking. The duck is bought from Cantonese BBQ shop& they just re-cook it. I'd actually give this place 4.5 stars, the only reason I rounded down instead of up is because it's a bit more expensive (the portions are smaller). I came to this place with a friend looking for the Szechuan place that it replaced, and when we got here on a Sunday for lunch it was empty except for another table. We were apprehensive about the emptiness, but the food is pretty authentic and very good. We ordered a rabbit dish, a small plate chicken, and Szechuan dan dan noodles. Of the three, the chicken was the best. The flavor was very authentic, close to the kind I had in China, and it had delicious handmade noodles at the bottom. The Szechuan dan dan noodles had a good dan dan sauce, but it would've been better with better noodles (ideally handmade with good chew). The rabbit was also well flavored and a bit tougher than the chicken, but I think it's also because rabbit is a tougher meat. Overall I enjoyed all the dishes very much. Keeping in mind that I have pretty high standards for Chinese food (coming from the California Bay Area and having been to China often), this place is pretty authentic. I'm really just nitpicking here. The only main downside is that it's a bit more expensive than Chinese restaurants I'm used to as the portions are rather small, but the flavor makes up for it. This is probably about as authentic and good as you'll get in Chicago. Edit: I've come back way too many times for it to remain 4.5 stars. read more

I like this place better with each visit. If you want quality authentic food you can't go wrong here. Everything I have tried has been really flavorful and balanced, although it could be spicier, so done be afraid to ask for extra spicy. For people who know and love their authentic Chinese cuisine, this place is for you. For people looking for greasy, Americanized-Chinese crap, there are countless other places in the city you can go to for that. Here, they know how do to REAL Sichuan cuisine. I lived in China for two and a half years, so I have some idea, and I love this place. I recommend the Eggplant in Fish Fragrant Sauce, and anything with "Zigong Salt Miner's" in the title. But if you come, get creative and try something new. Just know that this is place is the real deal, but don't be afraid to try it.
