    Not fresh and awful presentation

    Came in with a friend who heard others rave about it. I regretted the moment I entered this restaurant. The fish prepared was not fresh. The pea sprouts were stir fried to a burnt flavor, and the kitchen staff didn't help remake. The eggplant casserole didn't have any chicken bits nor salted fish flavor as a classic eggplant casserole would. Nearly nothing tasted good but the bill costed similar to comparatively much better restaurants. I would avoid this restaurant.

    Closer to work in Bronzeville and less hassle parking for a workday lunch. First time visit - got the beef & Chinese broccoli chow fun and it was crispy underneath. Hainan chicken was the other test dish. Both top notch. Fair shot at free residential parking here.

    We tried: Taishan Eel Rice Casserole Typhoon Lobster Chicken w/ Ginger Casserole Braised Duck w/ Tofu Skin Casserole Fantastic hole in the wall Chinese restaurant. We all enjoyed all the dishes with different personal favorites. I loved the flavor of chicken ginger casserole and eel rice casserole. The portion and crispiness of the latter was also very good. The chicken dish had bones in it which people may not like but that's more authentic for me. Service was good. It's a small space with tables for small to big groups.

    Don't judge the book by it's cover, the food here is actually delicious. Their menu is quite large but the rice box variety is limited. I tried almost every rice box and the value and taste keeps me coming back here. I ordered authentic Asian flavors such as the Fish filet and beans ($8). No soup just the rice box. Located close to the I-94 East on a busy intersection but if you can find a local resident street for parking and find an open table inside, you will enjoy the food here. Highly recommend.

    This newish mom-and-pop restaurant on the southern fringes of Chinatown is the real deal on good, authentic Cantonese cuisine.  Their dining space is smallish but still comfortable with a capacity of about 40 and about 6 tables.  They have a big menu and we found all of the servings to be delicious and flavorful, and delivered to the table piping hot and fresh.  Knowing the place was a bit smallish, I called for a 5:30pm Saturday reservation and learned in fact that they wisely require reservations for parties of 6 or more.  It was good timing as the popular place was totally filled up by 6pm.  Olivia took the call and she has perfect English for what that's worth.  There is easy free street parking on the side streets, but on White Sox game nights, you might end up finding a spot in a permit zone and the restaurant has a handy windshield permit sign for you to use as needed and fyi. You'll have to park, walk to the restaurant, return to the car with the permit, and return the permit upon departure but it will be worth the couple of short trips. So, our dinner party of 7 came in to try the following dishes.   - eel rice casserole pot with soup, and this is the Taishan region's (where theirs and my own ancestors hail from) signature dish - steamed lobster and egg - clams with black bean sauce - clams with vermicelli - fish fillets with veggies - sizzling chicken casserole - garlic bean sprouts These were all quality dishes and the prices were reasonable with a pre-tax and pre-tip bill of $180.75.  Tea was complimentary, service was quick and efficient, and the dishes showed up readily one by one. Great Cantonese restaurant, and I'm pretty sure we'll be returning sooner or later!

    Former server (and chef?) of Kam Fung opened up their own Taishan - Cantonese restaurant here and it hits the spot. The dishes we ordered were very well prepared, nothing overcooked (unlike my Taishan family that likes to steam or boil things into oblivion). Out of all the dishes we had, I'd avoid the intestines because it has a bit barn-yard flavor. Highlights were the Taishan eel rice, crispy fish filet, black bean and pepper with squid, and crispy fish filet. Although, my family would complain portions are too small for the price, I think the food is worth it because we can't make this variety of delicious dishes at home this quickly. I hope their business does well because I'd like to be a repeat patron!

Prices are reasonable and portions are pretty generous. ===== Kind of lost count of how many times I've been. Love getting the dim sum and noodle dishes here. Some favorites: beef cheong fun with egg, siu mai, Singapore noodle, xo rice noodle rolls, spare ribs, pork and century egg congee. All the food has been very solid. Inside is always bustling and can be a bit crowded. Service is pretty friendly as far as Chinatown goes, and very efficient. There's a guy who works there who I think is the manager or something, because he puts in 200x effort and is always hustling. When he's not around it feels like something is missing. Prices are very reasonable and we like ordering a lot here so that we have tasty leftovers for later. This place has quite a few big tables and is good for large groups. My only nits are that very occasionally a dish or teacup will have a dirty spot, and that the bubble tea here is kind of meh. I don't remember exactly which one I ordered, but it was a little watery and lacking in flavor. It's also probably tough since they're boxed in by boba places now. Pro tip: When you first get your table, they'll ask you what kind of tea you want. If you ignore them or don't know how to answer, the default is green tea. Another one is to come at off-peak times. Not only will you get a table faster, but I think they tweak their portion sizes depending on how crowded it is. Definitely will be back! And I recommend you visit too

Communication was a challenge since very little English was spoken, and the descriptions of the dishes were lacking. I don't enjoy gambling on menu titles that sound good but end up being something completely different from what you expect. Some of the more familiar dishes were solid. The Kung Pao Chicken and Mongolian Beef were both pretty good and tasted like what you'd expect from most Chinese restaurants. Other dishes were much harder to understand, even after asking questions about how they were prepared or whether they were sweet or savory. We ordered the Sauteed Chicken in Hot Spicy Sauce Rice, which turned out to be very heavy on Sichuan peppercorns with a strong floral aftertaste. The chicken sat on a bed of what looked and tasted like deep-fried kale, and despite the word "rice" in the name, there was no rice in the dish at all. That's one item we won't be ordering again. We also tried the Fish Filet with Hot and Sour Lime Sauce. It was basically a sweet-and-sour style fish dish. It wasn't bad, but it leaned much sweeter than expected. Another thing to note: none of the dishes come with white rice--it's completely à la carte. We only found that out after ordering. With prices being what they are these days, it would be nice if they included at least some white rice like most Chinese restaurants do. Overall, the food wasn't terrible, but the lack of clear descriptions and communication made the experience frustrating. I prefer restaurants where expectations are clear rather than discovering surprises after the food arrives.

The XO sauce stir-fried noodles with beef was my favorite. If you're looking for something casual with affordable dishes, Yummy Yummy is worth checking out.
