McClatchy Park pop-up event during the 2022 Sacramento Vegan Chef Challenge
Bridget W.

I'd heard about Donna's Tamales before, but during this year's Sacramento Vegan Chef Challenge I was finally able to experience them. During a pop-up event at McClatchy Park I took advantage of their deal and loaded up on the frozen tamales to enjoy at my leisure. Although not exclusively vegan (there's, meat and vegetarian options available too) they are all hand-made with organic masa and both lard and gluten-free. Vegan options available: *Red & Black Beans with Yams *Pumpkin *Summer Veggie *Spicy Cauliflower I also had picked up their Spicy Chipotle Sauce but was underwhelmed, so I'd personally skip that next time. From what I've tried so far, these tamales are flavorful and reheat from frozen quite well, with the masa holding a nice texture. Donna's vegan tamales, although good, are just not all too creative. I would love to see vegan versions that incorporate ingredients like jackfruit, nopales, and mushrooms. A vegan cheese option would also be a stand-out. I'll continue to keep my eye out for Donna's Tamales at the various pop-up events in the future in hopes these delicious tamales get even more creative.

These tamales are so good! For $5/tamale ($10/pack) very worth it. The guy manning the stand at the Stonestown Farmers Market is very nice & always offers samples of multiple flavors. The tamales have lots of filling. The end bite of the tamale are 90% masa but the masa is so good - moist enough and very flavorful - so it's alright!

Donna's Tamales at the Divisadero Farmers Market San Francisco. It was great to see a nice mix of Tamale option via Donna's, and although I have no issue with Lard it's good to see an brand that excludes it. Plus they offer Gluten free Tamales.

I'm able to speak about the breakfast burrito, chips, and salsa. I saw a stand at the Alameda farmers market and everything looked so fresh and exquisite. The staff member was very nice and very knowledgeable of the product and how to pair what salsa with what. As it was the morning, my mind was into the breakfast burrito. I'm a big fan of mango salsa and had to try. Unfortunately no sample but usually mango salsa hits the spot. The burrito was nice. Very cheese and eggy. More in the soggy side but that's fine for me because the flavour is there. I added some mango salsa and it was one of those moments where taste buds are thanking you but your eyes are questioning the vision. The chips very fresh but a little bit too much salt. The mango salsa needs a bit more of a sweeter taste. In the end I'm happy.

Summer Veggies Tamale

WOW! These tamales are instantly my favorite!!! Can't wait to go get more! A super nice gentleman at the Donna's Tamales booth at the Brentwood Farmer's Market offered me some free samples. And I am so glad he did! Everything I tried was tasty and I love that these are fresh & made local! My favorite so far is Summer Veggies- and I don't even like veggies! That's how great these are! I definitely plan to be back for more!

Review is for the Donna's Tamales at the Niles Farmers Market in the Tri-city/ Fremont area. Don't want to make a new Yelp page when Donnas shows up quite a bit all over the bay area on yelp. 3.5 stars total. The weird thing I want to share with people are their Tortilla Chips and Tomatillo Salsa are really, really good. If you've only come here and got tamales give them another shot and try their chips and salsa. The difference from FRESH tortilla chips and salsa is a big one and these are so much better than grocery store tortilla chips or even the chips they serve at restaurants. Just try them and you'll see. I would go back here just to stock up on the chips and salsa for the week. We ate them way faster than normal because they are good. The tamales themselves were OK, they have vegetarian and vegan Tamales which you should 100% try over the chicken one since it is their specialty. The chicken was a little dry but our Cheese Chili Corn Tamales was good.

Please heed my warning (and those of the other most recent reviews!) and save yourself the time,…read moremoney, effort, and stress - hire literally ANY other caterer for your event. After months of poor communication and several displays of unprofessionalism, I tried to cancel our contract 6 weeks prior to our wedding date. I was in a dispute with the owner (Gabe) to try and get a refund for an event he hadn't even catered, and he refused to provide it. Note that the owner himself has stated that he thinks his business is headed to an end. See attached photo for text messages I received from him with this claim. If anything, you don't want to work with someone who cannot maintain a professional demeanor in their client correspondence. In case you need further convincing to NOT hire Ring of Fire, feel free to read through my ordeal below. --- In February of this year, I reached out in search of a wedding caterer. Gabe invited me and my partner to a complimentary tasting with other couples who were interested in booking. The tasting went great (the ONLY thing that went well in all my interactions with them) so we booked and paid a 50% deposit. Over the next few months I reached out to get deadlines and feedback on our proposed menu. After repeated attempts to contact him, the only time he really reached out was to offer a discount on our balance if we paid it early. In hindsight, this should have been a *red flag* - no professional would ever reach out to a client to ask them to pay something in advance of the contract terms unless they were poorly managing their business and finances. Instead, thinking it was gesture of customer service, we went ahead and paid our balance early to get the discount. However, after paying, Gabe unprofessionally asked us to reschedule our already confirmed site tour in favor of booking another lunch. My wedding coordinator and I agreed to reschedule, only to have him NO SHOW for the site tour. 15 minutes after the confirmed meeting time I called Gabe to get his ETA. He didn't seem to know where our venue was (even though he accepted a calendar event with the date, time, and address in it) and told me was still 50 minutes away so we proceeded without him. Had we waited, he would have been OVER AN HOUR LATE. At this point, I lost faith that ROF could cater my event. We were still 6 weeks away from our date so I requested to cancel our contract and get back the balance payment (that HE requested we pay early). Needless to say, he did not want to grant the refund. I worked with an attorney and determined the best course of action was to file a dispute with the credit card company AND to sue him in small claims court as backup. Luckily, the credit card company resolved the dispute in my favor but I still experienced an extreme amount of stress trying to book a new caterer with less than 6 weeks from my wedding date - something I would never wish on any bride. Again, please save yourself the stress and look elsewhere for your caterer.

We hired Gabe & Ring of Fire in 2019 for our June 2020 wedding. We had come by to do a tasting and…read morehe had a huge spread ready for us and another couple. All of the food was delicious (and the artichoke dip is still my favorite thing ever). We were given the option to pay in full upfront so we did.  When Covid hit, Gabe was very understanding and accommodating about moving the date, which we did twice. We finally celebrated in June 2022, and unfortunately the team was dealing with some key staff out for Covid.  We were super happy with Gabe until pretty much the day of the wedding itself. He had previously said he was going to come by in the morning for setup but never showed up or answered our message asking if he was still coming. We were also supposed to have the big truck showcased on the property and they arrived with the smaller truck. Come to find out the big truck had been inoperable and they couldn't fix it that morning. When the staff started arriving, the first thing they tell me is how they're short staffed and needed to move their crew around, service might be slower, etc. This felt unprofessional especially since it all ended up being fine. We paid for 120 head count and only had about 90 ppl show up, so we told them to leave leftovers. I'm not sure what happened but we had zero leftovers, even though Gabe was saying we'd have a bunch. They also didn't serve coffee in the evening though we had paid for it. Overall we've gotten so much positive feedback on the food and bar, the crew was great, but the unprofessionalism in the final moments really left a sour taste in my mouth. I'm sure some of this had to do with the fact that we paid in 2019 and that doesn't feel fair given that it was an option he offered to us.

I find this method extremely…read moredisingenuous considering they are clearly making a profit because I have indeed seen one of the staff members drive off with a Tesla Model X (even if they're leasing or whatever) I don't have an issue with a slightly higher price to reflect their costs but the way you order is you go up to their food truck, you order, and you tap to pay, but you're not shown the screen to select your tip amount (seems default is 15 - 18%). The reason I'm writing is because I thought I was the only one but my friends also vented the same experience but they factor that cost in and still believe it's worth the price which I do think is also true. I simply find the practice of not giving the consumer the option to know this "hidden" fee is not a great experience On the merits of their food, it's a good spot, I would go back occasionally, the food is your prototypical Bay Area Mexican food so nothing special and burritos can get soggy since they have pico de gallo (salsa) in their burritos. I would suggest them toasting their tortillas and asking for pico on the side which imo makes for a much better experience and in line with the burritos in LA and SD Overall a decent spot, I merely find the aspect of not giving the customer the ability to select their tip amount disingenuous considering there's a large fatigue of tipping culture in the US and you're eating on the tables outside so it's self service. They don't bus your leftovers, you do so it makes less sense to pay for a tip. Maybe I'm seen as stingy but I believe the option should be available or reflected in the base price to not have a "hidden" tax

I like to call their platters "homemade meals prepared by a loving grandmother." Trust me, I spent a summer in New Delhi and ate a lot of home cooked meals by my host, and Munch manages to exceed those standards. Every time I come here, I get the Vegetarian Combo for $14. It comes with three different veggie sides - today, there was potato, okra, and chickpeas. (The sides rotate. I've also had eggplant, tomatoes, and zucchini here, though chickpeas seem to be a staple.) I'm not a vegetarian, but if I could eat this every day, I gladly would become one. Self-important suits come to the FiDi trucks, and for heaven's sake, don't talk to them because they are too busy multi-tasking on their smartphones. And yes, I'm talking about women as much as men. They represent an equal-opportunity species of smug entitlement. Such is the case whenever I see this familiar navy blue Indian food truck parked on California at lunchtime during the week (photo: http://bit.ly/1QJi5Ln). The menu is surprisingly diverse for a food truck given the space constraints. I had the $10 Vegetarian Combo, which provides three veggie dishes, dal, rice and naan. The veggie dishes that day were Chana Masala (savory chick peas), Okra Bhaji (fried and curried okra) and boiled carrots from Riverdog Farms (photo: http://bit.ly/1MxBtY7). The okra was the best of the bunch with a spicy edge that cut through the sauce. I like how the owner makes a special point of using organic ingredients in his various stews. There was plenty of basmati rice to sop it up though the naan was a bit skimpy crumbled in the aluminium foil. It all came in an easily transportable covered tray that allowed me to avoid the suits.
