I find this method extremely disingenuous considering they are clearly making a profit because I have indeed seen one of the staff members drive off with a Tesla Model X (even if they're leasing or whatever) I don't have an issue with a slightly higher price to reflect their costs but the way you order is you go up to their food truck, you order, and you tap to pay, but you're not shown the screen to select your tip amount (seems default is 15 - 18%). The reason I'm writing is because I thought I was the only one but my friends also vented the same experience but they factor that cost in and still believe it's worth the price which I do think is also true. I simply find the practice of not giving the consumer the option to know this "hidden" fee is not a great experience On the merits of their food, it's a good spot, I would go back occasionally, the food is your prototypical Bay Area Mexican food so nothing special and burritos can get soggy since they have pico de gallo (salsa) in their burritos. I would suggest them toasting their tortillas and asking for pico on the side which imo makes for a much better experience and in line with the burritos in LA and SD Overall a decent spot, I merely find the aspect of not giving the customer the ability to select their tip amount disingenuous considering there's a large fatigue of tipping culture in the US and you're eating on the tables outside so it's self service. They don't bus your leftovers, you do so it makes less sense to pay for a tip. The food here was actually good but they were not prepared for long lines of people, since they took a good 15 m-25 minutes to take our order and then get the food to their customers. They were outside of the shops at Emeryville mall and lines formed but they could not really accommodate the lines and thus very slow. Additionally, they put very little rice and beans in the plate, not even filling up the box as it should be. Other than that though, the rice and beans were flavorful but there just should have been more of it. The only options for enchiladas was verde, which was fine since the sauce was good. El Rey parks outside Pacific Pipe climbing where I climb regularly. For me this place is hit or miss. The staff is friendly and the service is good. The food isn't always unfortunately. Sometimes the rice is mushy, the tortillas have tasted stale and the meat just isn't consistently good. My best options here tend to be the tortas with chicken. The asada/beef is hit or miss and I got a lot of tendon/fat pieces in there, more often than other places. I felt my burrito today was overly salty and it wasn't my best experience. This is probably the best taco truck you can visit in Emeryville. (NOT EAST BAY, but EMERYVILLE). I've seen this truck here for years, but this is my first time today. There isn't really too much parking as the truck is parked close to the corner, but there is a the Target and Panera Bread parking alot across the street. There are a couple small folding tables and chairs for customers to sit and eat as well. They have many options I wanted to try considering how fairly priced all the food was. Unfortunately I have dinner plans, this evening and didn't want to ruin my appetite for later so I ordered a burrito. I ordered a al pastor burrito with extra al pastor ($8.50 + $1 for extra meat). Not the best al pastor I've ever had, but damn this sure was good considering the area I was in. I went fairly early around 11am, so there was no line, though I've seen lines at this truck before. My food came out in about 5 minutes. The al pastor was very flavorful, not dry, and not overly soaked in oil. There have been many places I've been to, where the al pastor tacos/burritos are absolutely drenched in oil. The burrito was decently sized and the ingredients tasted fresh. They even included some tortilla chips and salsa in my bag as well! Not a lot of taco trucks even in Oakland do that. Their torta al pastor isn't in my top 10. I first approached the business in order to ask whether the gentleman would drive me to Modesto. As it turned out this was in fact not a Lyft vehicle, but instead a mobile taqueria! My eyes feasted on the menu until I opened my wallet and two moths flew out. I then checked my other wallet which was just as I'd left it: full of counterfeit $2 bills. I slammed the currency on the counter and shouted my demand for a torta. After a few minutes of us chuckling over the joke I made about the character from Entourage, I sat my feet down in my shoes and waited. As the aromas encircled my head like a wreath, suddenly lightning struck, illuminating Pavlov's slim profile wresting with the rope atop the bell tower. As if by cue, all around me caterpillars began bursting from their chrysalides. A cap of cocoon shrapnel remained on their heads as they straddled miniature motorcycles and raced toward me, antennae twitching in the bay wind. Once through my abdomen they began doing that... ok you know when the motorcycle people drive in that metal sphere and they're going all crazy? That's what they did upon my very writhing fundus! To say the least: there were butterflies in my stomach as the royal chef declared the readiness of my sangwich. I poked at a few of the tortilla chips, then turned to the main event. If I had only known now what I knew then, I'd be much better at this review. The spiced porklets indeed came from a pig despite their shrimpy allotment. The heavily oiled sauces mixed with the water that had accumulated in my mouth during the antecedent insect encounter. Luckily the solitary man had insisted I take the wad of napkins he thrust at me for the trickle of oil began to rage into a torrent. Unfortunately this torrent was not one of bits, but of spicy saliva. Drip! Drop! I mopped up the leakages as best as I were able at the time. The bun on the breast of the newly cooked pork gave visions of wonder bread to diners below. This wonderous roll showed no indication of having been toasted. In fact when pressed upon interrogation it admitted its guilt by the sweet squishyness. I cannot overstate my underwhelmage. This is the best burrito in Oakland that I've had in my 3 years here. I got the chicken - it was shredded and juicy and the accompanying beans and rice were bomb. We also got the veggie burrito and that was equally delicious. Not much parking on the street so just park in the target lot or around the corner. read more
