Where do I start!!! I took my family because I was impressed with the good reviews. I only live 15 minutes away so I thought this might be a jewel I have overlooked. I found out it was NOT a jewel from the second we walked in. Entrance was dirty, whole place was dirty infact. They had menus printed off a printer on a piece of paper. Bad specials on a piece of paper not even laminated. The food was terrible. Then to top it all off, they rush us out of there for no reason at all cuz the place was empty. Save your money. This was my first visit to Donovan's. I ordered the fried green tomato appetizer. OMG! It was the best I've ever eaten. I ordered the full order, and ate all of it in record time. I also ordered corned beef and cabbage for later. Another fabulous dish! Donovan's is my new favorite restaurant in St. Augustine. I plan on making it a weekly event. read more

Went to dinner here last night with my spouse. We ordered the shepards pie and the pot roast...both sub par to say the least. The mashed potatoes taste like instant potatoes. And the vegetables in the pot roast were crunchy..might just be a personal preference but they should not be crunchy. The taste for both dishes was just blah. Nothing special, not even just ok, more like not good. And they charge you for extra gravy on an extremely dry pot roast. If you are going to nickle and dime me, have the courtesy to inform me there is an extra cost for it. Service was good though. Food not so much, won't be returning. read more

My husband and I have actually frequented Donovan's many times prior to this review, and they have always been pretty consistent with their food and service. We like that it is one of few restaurants that is currently in our area, and that makes this place easy and convenient for dine-in or carryout. Donovan's has a nice "locals" feel about it, and several times that I've been there (especially while waiting for a carryout order at the bar), I've witnessed many friendly interactions between patrons and staff, clearly indicating the "regulars" at this place. The food is decent, with some of my go-to orders being the fish & chips (I love that the fish is very lightly battered and I usually end up with a very large piece of fish), the Angus burger (which I can never finish, it's so big!), the shepherd's pie (love the mashed potatoes on top), and the wings (which are tasty as well). The decor is simple and relaxed, making it feel like you can stay and linger a while to enjoy dinner. Decent food, friendly atmosphere and great customer service. The two young ladies at the front hostess stand thought it would be a good idea to have a poor attitude and roll there eyes when I asked if I could look around - in front of my husband. So we left. Just called to try and see if they make reservations and they answered the phone right away and I said I wanted to make reservations and he said hold on a minute. He laid the phone down where I could hear all this noise -- I stayed on the line for 5 minutes, then hung up and called again. It rang and rang and rang and nobody answered and the call failed. So I called back again and it rang and rang and rang and it failed again. Both my daughter and husband are corned beef addicts. No surprise that they both ordered the corned beef platters. As I am very choosy about my corned beef, I opted for the half portion fish and chip platter. When the food arrived I was glad I had ordered a half platter-the portion was huge. My daughter, having been to Europe, said my plate was very authentic. It was also quite good! I stole a bite of the corned beef and was almost sorry I had gotten the fish (almost but not quite). Fries were home made and almost as tasty as the cole slaw. Nice atmosphere, delicious hot food and great service. ' Nuf said. read more

Friday evening, my first time visiting this restaurant. Arrived just before 6:00 pm and there was a short wait for a table. My partner and I ended up in the bar. As noted in Nick N's review, where he compares Irish pubs by their Irish menu, and in his and my case, we use Sheppard's Pie as a point of comparison and evaluation. I was underwhelmed. According to the website, this was Grandma Tess' recipe, but I've been to many Irish pubs, and to Ireland and have yet to get a Sheppard's Pie covered with a layer of thick cheese and thyme. It was enjoyable after I removed the cheese. The filling had a touch of spice that really brought out the flavor of the meat. My partner had the fish and chips. She felt the fish was flavorful but the deep fried coating was very thick and began removing it about half way through the meal. The beer was cold and the selection good, the staff friendly and the service was timely despite how busy the restaurant was on a Friday evening. read more

This restaurant / pub is great! We had our rehearsal dinner at Donovan's in November 2009. The portions were huge, the food was delicious, and the staff was very attentive. They did a wonderful job with our large group. We talked with the manager ahead of time to plan the menu choices and he was very responsive to our needs. Donovan's is gorgeous inside. It is very clean and the lighting gives it a cozy feel. Everyone loved the corned beef and cabbage, grilled salmon, rosemary chicken, and fried cheesecake. We highly recommend it. read more

DO NOT GET THE SHEPHERDS PIE! My wife and I just "ate" here, and for the first time in my life I threw up in the middle of my meal! We only had about 40 min to eat after standing at the door for 5 waiting to get some service, so we told our waitress we were in a bit of a hurry when we ordered our food for her to bring us the check. 15 min later our food comes out and the shepherds pie is a mess! It's just a pile of what I assume are potatoes covered in unmelted shredded parmesan cheese (definitely from a bag they get at the local grocery) carefully hidden under a thick sheet of stale bread crumbs that choke you with every bite. There are hardly any meat or vegetables and what was there was clearly microwaved for a minute and was sent out. I was charged $15 for this by the way! Hopefully at least I turned some people away from the horrible fate of eating here when I told them. read more

Excellent upscale Irish pub fare. This makes the second "surprise in a strip mall" that I've stumbled across on family vacation through this part of FL. I suppose it shouldn't surprise me anymore, since everything here seems to exist in strip malls. This is actually one of the best Irish pubs I've been in, including several dozen in Ireland (Republic; mostly Cork and west). A little on the upscale side, which I personally don't mind. The food was well worth the slightly upscale prices. All the usual ethanol concoctions for an Irish pub, at decent prices. Excellent full menu with outstanding Irish pub staples. We stopped into Donovan's Irish Pub today on our way back from St Augustine. The place was not crowded at noon time. Although more people came in as we were leaving maybe from church. We were seated quickly. The restaurant was clean and has a nice atmosphere and the server was efficient. We tried the fish and chips and a Rueben sandwich. The food came out quickly. The fish and chips had a very generous portion of fish on the plate and was cooked nicely. It was not the best I have ever had but it was above average. But I have to say the Reuben was amazing. The reason I rated Donovan's so high. It is definitely the best one I have had in years and outside of New York City it is the best around. The flavor of the meat was simple wonderful. I highly recommend it. This is a nice family place in between St Augustine and Jacksonville. It would be a good destination place to take a ride on a nice day and enjoy a pint and some good food. I just had the worst dining experience in years. I cannot knock the food, the fish and chips were delicious. Huge portions to satisfy any appetite, and cooked to near perfection. The service was so bad, however, that I will not be going back. Our waitress Bridget was a charmer, friendly and engaging. She took our orders and that was probably the last time she spared more than full sentence with us. We were a group of 8 that included 4 children. The food was delivered by what I can only assume was kitchen staff. We had a few orders that were wrong in small ways like fruit instead of fries with one of the kids meals and 1 person short on the cutlery. The opportunity to get this corrected was not forthcoming because, as I stated earlier, our waitress virtually ignored us for the rest of the meal. To top it off, a 20 percent gratuity was added to the bill. I understand that certain sized parties can incur automatic tips, but two of our party could not be considered anything more than toddlers and more than one of us had to nurse the one drink we were able to get for the entire meal. I believe that a gratuity should be earned, especially if it is deemed more or less mandatory! I recommend the food, but if you go, you should probably get it to go. read more

Okay, so I love chicken wings. I first ordered "hot" wings here right when we moved to the area. They were great! I had been coming here for about a year and tried the hot flavored wings a few times again before giving up entirely. They were loaded with so much black pepper that they weren't even enjoyable. They were hot but just black pepper hot. I just thought there was a new cook or the bucket of made-ahead sauce had gotten to the bottom where all of the black pepper settled. Anyway, I decided to enjoy the chicken sandwich and the fish for a few months before attempting to order the wings again. Both, by the way, are delicious... Especially the side of steak fries. I like to dip mine in bleu cheese, ranch or mild wing sauce. Speaking of mild wing sauce... Turns out that's what was served to me the very first time I ordered "hot" wings. I wish the server just told me so I didn't keep chasing a dream. Anyway, now that I know, I never order anything else. 10 wings, all flats (because I can hold onto them) with bleu cheese. This place is conveniently located to my home and send to be open whenever I get in the wing mood... Except Monday evenings. Drove all the way from oceanway just for the fish and chips and it was horrible. Got the full size and it is just a 2 piece captain d fish meal except burnt and dried out. Went for lunch today, ordered a burger and fries. Burger was at my table in 2 minutes. The burger was dry and I could tell it was a precooked burger. I'm sorry but at these prices your going to serve me a precooked warmed up burger? I've never had this kinda service here before, and I will never again since I won't be coming back.
