A surprise find in Brandon. Typically overlooked because it's the in suburbs of Tampa, Brandon doesn't have the most renown restaurants. This place is a prime exception. I always get it well done with extra seasoning ( so it will taste like my grandmother's) and it's perfect. The vibe is super cute and the bar is in the middle of the restaurant. The servers are always so sweet and happy and quick to serve us drinks and appetizers. We've gotten the char grilled oysters, fresh oysters and they were both amazing. We ordered the lacquered delmonico medium rare and a bone in ribeye with a loaded baked potato, potatoes au gratin, lobster man and cheese, baby bellas and corn. Valentines dinner as requested by my beautiful wife! Definitely had to make reservations for this day. But I believe on other days you can just arrive and wait the designated time set by the host. But we were seated fairly quickly at a nice candle lit table. Nice and quiet section of the restaurant. Server was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. We ended up with the New York Strip and the Duck as our entrées. We ordered asparagus and Old Bay Crab Dip as sides. Now the crab dip itself was good but the bread tasted too hard to really enjoy. Asparagus although very flavorful, seemed a little cold. Not just room temperature but almost cool. I'm not too much of a complainer so it was ok for me, BUT I would also understand why someone would be unhappy with this. Now as for the cook on the steak, SPOT ON MEDIUM! I was impressed. Went last Sunday with family, 5 people total. Server was engaging and friendly, but informed us that after a busy weekend, they had no more Delmonico and Prime Rib, as well as Pork Chop. Slightly disappointed, but we understood, so we made alternate orders instead. Oysters were the first to come out. They tasted fresh this time, although I believe they would have tasted better raw. However, I believe they either should have omitted the bread or given us something else, because the bread was very stale. Mains arrived about 15-20 minutes after. Right away, noticed the cooks on my NY steak and another person's NY steak had been switched: I wanted mid-rare, other person wanted medium- the opposite was given. seasoning was also lacking for the other person's while mine tasted well-seasoned. Everything else was alright for the most part, it took a while for us to get the check. Overall I'd say it's a nice place to hang out if you live nearby, but maybe they were already burnt out from the rest of the weekend by the time Sunday dinner had started. read more

I wanted to give Donovan's meatery a try being that we have tried almost every other steakhouse in the Tampa area. I called to ask about a dress code and they said business casual. I assumed this would be the case based on the pricing of the food which was not an issue. When we arrived, we were way over dressed. Granted, this was Father's Day and in dinner time. Folks were in old t shirts and flip flops. We had a server who was attending to tables across the restaurant and informed us of this I guess so we didn't expect too much in way of attentive service. We had to ask for pitchers of drink refills so we didn't have to wait so long glasses are probably only 12 oz if that, so we ran out quickly. The food was ok at best. My daughter's steak was supposed to be medium but it was so charred/burnt on the outside it made it medium well. I also do not recommend the brussel sprouts as a side. We did enjoy the truffle fries and onion rings that came with the steaks but that was about it. We won't be back due to the service and price/quality of the food. Go to Berns instead and you'll get more bang for your buck plus a much better experience overall. read more

I have been a regular customer of Donovan's Meatery since the day they opened (I believe in October of 2020) as it is one of a few nicer spots to eat at in the Brandon area. I have visited this restaurant for pretty much any occasion: for a date night with my husband, to take my sons out to grab a bite to eat, for girls and coworkers get-togethers, for birthday celebrations, and many other occasions. Service is consistently good. But what I like the most about this place is their design. I know most of it came from the former restaurant, Boca, however, I appreciate the fact that the owners decided not to change too much of the rustic interior. When it comes to must try dishes, in my opinion, you should opt in for Butternut Squash Ravioli or Seared Duck Breast & Confit Legs as your main dish (if you are not ordering a steak), Flame Roasted Asparagus or Grilled Balsamic Vegetables (sides) and Duck Confit Flatbread (appetizer). Their Smoked Prime Rib is a very generous portion. I have tried probably 70% of items on their menu and they all are pretty decent. The only odd thing I would like to mention about this place is if they had a busy weekend and you come on a Monday or a Tuesday, they sometimes run out of food items. It is very unusual to witness around Tampa Bay. Other than that, it is a nice place with a variety of food options for many. If you are in Brandon/Riverview area, give them a try! Sit outside, especially when the weather is nice and cool - absolutely lovely! read more

This was my second time visiting Donovan's. The bar is well stocked, and so far the two bartenders I've had the pleasure of meeting have been very good at their craft. I asked for a Black Manhattan, which she had never heard of, but was willing to give it a shot if I told her how to make it. They had all of the ingredients and she did a fantastic job. Loved the atmosphere of the restaurant. We started with the corn fritters starter (not our fave - lots of plain dough), we had the 6oz filet it was cooked well, but didn't love the seasoning, salty. For sides we had the corn (loved), Brussels (bland - wouldn't get again), potatoes a-gratin (didn't love these either, they were okay), we also had the lamb chomps served with mashed potatoes (this was delicious -- mashed potato's were awesome! For dessert, we got the carrot cake and it was really good! Overall, it was okay. Would try it again and order different sides and a different protein option. read more

Brandon doesn't have places like Donovan's and it really adds a nice touch to the town from Datz Restaurant Group. The steak is delicious, but also don't miss their lunch specials and the steak sandwich and appetizers. Obvious attention paid to meat cuts They accept casually dressed diners which is nice considering the location. The staff has been very friendly on my visits. Outside dining is nice although a little hot in the summer. Prices are what you expect for a steakhouse, but certainly could be more expensive. They really have the steakhouse sides down and you can see the influence from all their different concepts, including the shuttered Roux on Macdill. Cocktails are delicious as expected from DRG. They have a daily happy hour from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and they have handled COVID restrictions much better than most restaurants. They do close early for a steakhouse in my opinion so keep that in mind. Ambiance and the staff were great! The food was a bit unpleasant for the price - mainly the steak. I got the "high" quality skirt steak and my husband got the New York strip - I will say that my husband's steak was cooked pretty well. Mine however, was not a high quality cut. I maybe ate three bites and decided that it was not for me. Note that everything is al carte - so that 50 dollar steak does not come with sides, you are paying for those 11-12 dollar sides. Also if you would like your steak to have a flavor or butter on it - you are paying 4 dollars extra. The sides are the way to go: mushrooms Brussel Sprouts ‍ Asparagus We got the chargrilled oysters - I've had better for a lower price. They were gritty and overdone. Great place to try. And I will come go back for the mushrooms but that's about it! Hope this helps - happy munching! read more

I'm giving Donovan's Meatery a 3 star because it wasn't a terrible experience but it also wasn't what other reviews lead us to believe. Our drinks took a very long time to get to us. After our drinks arrived, we placed an appetizer and there was some confusion surrounding that. We were told we would have to wait 15-20 minutes for a fresh order, so then as we were looking over the menu to select a different appetizer, our original one came out. I'm glad we were able to get our original appetizer (it was delicious) it gave me the impression of a disorganized kitchen and communication. I'd say overall the taste of the food and the temperature was great, but I'm disappointed in the balsamic grilled vegetables. I'd have expected a different selection, and not just the exact same vegetables that were served with the steaks (tiny amount of slivers of peppers and onions.) The lighting in there is nice, but it's really cramped inside. It feels like you're encroaching on other guests spaces. As soon as you enter the door, it's the tiniest of spaces at the hostess stand. It's basically a fire hazard at the entrance. No one can get out the door behind you. We were celebrating an occasion, and while the waitress congratulating us once or twice was nice, they said it again multiple times...it just felt weird and uncomfortable after the 3rd one. I would only go back if service, wait times for drinks, and better menu options improved. read more

Came here on a child-free date night with my husband. We had a late reservation, and we were seated immediately. We started with cocktails. i had the steakhouse martini. I wish it had been a little colder, but it was tasty. My husband enjoyed his Brisk-it. My husband had the lobster bisque, which he enjoyed. I had the caesar salad, and it was a little more acidic than I prefer, but the greens were nice and crunchy. I wish there were whole anchovies on it, but my husband doesn't like seeing the fish, so he was happy. I ordered the bone-in ribeye, and my husband ordered the lacquered Delmonico. Originally, I had wanted the smoked prime rib, but they were out. The ribeye was excellent, although I only got a bite. My husband did not like the fish sauce in the Delmonico, so we ended up switching plates. I didn't mind the sweetness of the lacquer, although I think I'd prefer plain grilled meat. We also had a side of creamed spinach, which was tasty. All in all, I feel that Donovan's is a nice enough place to have a more upscale meal in Brandon/Riverview, but it doesn't quite compare to the steakhouses of Tampa. read more

I haven't been in this location since it was Boca Brandon. It is such a lovely spot in this Brandon area.My sister and I decided to go during a happy hour time to get some oysters!! That was the agenda...when we arrived, we were told no oysters...because they were out of season but this is actually oyster season, so I was a little confused by that. Then we were told that the girl who was shucking them cut herself...so there was a lot going on. I took a walk because I was so disappointment but another server (Jessica, I believe-with a tattoo on her forearm) tried to help and was bale to get some oysters out to us. Some were good portions and some were super tiny! They could have added more to make up for the super small ones. My sister had flat bread and it was decent. Our drinks were delicious (again because of Jessica) I also ordered the shrimp cocktail and it had a film over it and was just not the freshest shrimp. But Jessica (I think that;s her name) is the reason I didn't completely give the Donovan's a low score. I will just say ok for now and will give them another chance. read more

OK, so let me preface the review by saying that I was soooo looking forward to dining at this restaurant. My mouth had been watering for over a week to try a specific appetizer and I have to say I'm so disappointed ... The appetizer I was looking forward to trying was the "lobster escargot"... it's hard to find escargot on any menu, so I was really looking forward to this combination. Maybe I am dense but there was NO "escargot" in this appetizer!! In fact, there was barely any lobster either. It was very teeny tiny bits of lobster (not even chunks) and a lot of breadcrumbs! The bread that's supposed to be used for dipping in the butter sauce was so hard it was not useful (It needed to be a crusty bread but soft on the inside to absorb the sauce). So disappointing for the price ($16)! They need to RENAME this appetizer...Just don't call it escargot, call it lobster in butter sauce, or lobster (prepared like escargot) and I'd be ok. Current name= Epic fail! Moving onto dinner: Redeeming quality.... The dinner I ordered was the Frenched lamb chops... They were full of flavor and very juicy. It was prepared (4) to an order, cooked with the rib bone and topped with a delicious blueberry sauce. Absolutely amazing! The side was the most incredible mashed potatoes. Not sure what was in them, but I could eat those all day, every day! My friend had the salmon with asparagus. It was moist and flavorful. The asparagus was fresh and crisp, not overcooked. The drinks were made well and priced fairly. The overall service was good. We were a large party and It's hard to make everybody happy. At the end, some of our checks were not correct, but they quickly corrected them. Also, they did not impose the typical 20%+ gratuity for a large party and I appreciated that. If you have not been to Donavan's you are missing out. Been here many times, the service food, wine list is amazing. I have held three business events here, all phenomenal service. Personally my husband and I have came at lunch and dinner. The wild boar is simply amazing. My favorite is the tallow candle, lobster appetizers. I always enjoy the lamb chops or filet for dinner. For lunch it's the Hamburger steak absolutely fantastic, my husband enjoys the hamburger for lunch. The Alfredo cauliflower outstanding.
