Right when you walk in you clearly see what they have to offer on the digital menus displayed on the wall. The displays of donuts are beautiful. They range from type and the colors are vibrant and inviting! I had to get a mochi donut (one of my favorites) and I was not disappointed. The display cases are full of beautiful sprinkles and glaze and peanuts and bacon... yup, I was eye-balling that Maple & Bacon! I requested a mixed dozen. Then I saw it... the sign read "Sausage, Jalapeno and Cheese kolache." Ooooh goodness gracious, it was the biggest kolache I'd ever seen. And Id never seen one in Reno or Sparks. They do grow things bigger in TX. I know cuz I lived in Deep East TX. But this is Sparks, NV, and I want to try this. I've eaten a kolache or 2 or 500 in my day. He even offered to warm it up before I asked. I wanted this to be good, no I wanted it yo great. To be the "Whete have you been since I moved back to NV?" it wasn't. I was disappointed. The amount of filling to bread ratio was way off, in my opinion. I expected a sausage, not 6-8 sausage "coins" wrapped in a 7" x 5" dough package. It was soft, and the color was so inviting. I've passed by this place for the past 4 or 5 years and never had the chance to stop in....until today! I needed some coffee and thought why not since I was in the area. It's a cute little store that also has small seating area if you decide to hang out for a bit! The interior lighting is just perfect. Not too dark, but not too bright! The service was great! He was young, but was friendly and very helpful! They have different sorts of donut flavors and some uniunique ones (maple with bacon for example) as well! I got half a dozen to try oout few different ones (plus some donut holes). They also have donut holes, giant donuts, apple fritters, and others! Their donut was soft and fluffy and they weren't too sweet (which I love). I also got coffee. While they didn't have a ton of options, they had different types of coffee as well as cappuccino. I'm a sucker for donuts and this Donut Bistro location is my favorite place to go! It's convenient to get to, though not always easy to leave due to the traffic on Pyramid Highway. What drew me to this Donut Bistro in Sparks of all things was I hear they offered Kolaches, an Eastern European version of a meat bun, similar I suppose to the Asian BBQ pork buns, but different European fillings. My Russian American friend was explaining them to me as she was the one that heard about them here. I pronounced them Ko LAA cheese ... like most around here seem to. I guess I was wrong as are most of the American attempts at saying this name. It's pronounced ko-la- sCHA' ... she almost didn't know what I was saying with my pronunciation .... then it was OH .... you mean ko-la -sCHA! The last syllable has sort of an "s" sound starting the CHA part. and the la in the middle is short, not LAAA but just "la". OK, so we get to Donut Bistro. They offer 3 kinds of "those meat buns", meatball, sausage with cheese and sausage with cheese and jalapeno. Damn, we're here at 7am on a Sat. and they're mostly sold out already! So, I got one of the sausage and cheese and one of the sausage and cheese with jalapeno. This place is BUSY! The small parking lot is filled with cars coming and going. We decide to get a seat and try these buns here while they're warm. I also got a bear claw. The ones they make here are not like other bear claws I ever had, these look just like human FEET! With five toes even! So looking at the Kolaches my friend comments, they don't look like any Kolache she's had before, longer and shaped like a potato. She takes a big bite into the one I gave her. "Holy sheet, vut da heal ez deez?" Um... what's wrong? "Who, da heal puts a jalapeno in a Kolache?" Good thing I googled Kolache before coming here. I found out Kolache for some reason is really big in TEXAS! and the version they have, has like a hotdog, cheese and jalapeno in it, sort of like pig in the blanket! So, this Kolache here in Reno is like the TEXAS version, not like the Eastern European kind with stewed meats, onions, cheese and sour cream. So, leave it to Texas to put jalapeno and cheddar cheese in this Kolache. The jalapeno packs a little bit of a kick too! Needless to say my friend said I could have the rest of the buns. Well, at $4.00 bucks each, I wasn't gonna throw them out ... I'll still eat them. Kolaches here at Donut Bistro may not be a fave of mine, prob won't get again, but glad I tried and was educated in what regional Kolache was coming to the USA ... Texas! Come to think of it, there are no jalapeno or spicy in Eastern European foods. We shared the bear claw, at least that was good, but surprised by apple filling in the bear claw, never had that before, it was fun to pull the "toes" off! ... I had a hard time deciding what to get, but ended up deciding on the cheesecake filled donut since it sounded unique. I was a little disappointed- the filling was more of a vanilla cream and I wouldn't have guessed cheesecake had someone handed me the donut without telling me the flavor. The dough, while fresh, tasted like old grease, which kind of overtook the other flavors. My friends all felt similarly about their donuts. I love the fact this establishment has multiple choices on donut holes and several choices on coffee. Unlike some places where the choice of coffee is "yes, I do have brewed coffee" or "No." Got a glazed old fashioned and a raspberry filled donut. If I'd known that it was let your toddler decorate donuts day, I probably would have refrained from ordering. Here are two prime examples! They look nothing like the picture that you see you when you order. The second problem is, when you order an assorted box, they don't give you a choice, and 2/3 of my family can't stand maple and chocolate, but 2/3 of the box were exactly that. Don't be fooled - this isn't just a donut store, it's home to the most delicious meatball kolaches. I was so excited that I took a bite (or two) before snapping this photo. As ex-Oaklanders from 2005, we miss Chinatown. We had dozens of Formica tabletop joints we frequented with excellent food at a reasonable price. Donut Bistro in South Reno fits the bill.... excellent Chinese fare at what we guess is a reasonable price these days. And the size of the dishes are generous, leaving some to take home for a late night snack. In addition, I bought an apple fritter on the way out the other day that was big, lots of apple, and crispy.
