Placed conveniently in downtown San Mateo, I have felt I found a gem inside downtown. The donuts are fresh, as the sign advertises, but they are a bit bitter. I think it has to do with the type of oil they use. The price is about $3 per donut and they do not speak plain English, yet they are very kind. Great place if you want to satisfy your donut cravings! It is right to Philz which is great because you can have a nice cup of coffee with your donut. I arrived here around 4-5 pm and they had a good selection of donuts left. I got one glazed donut, one maple donut, and 12 donut holes. The donut was soft, sweet, and delicious. I had a hankering for a donut and after having walked by so many times, I finally decided to stop in and try their goods. My donut was fresher tasting than I expected. It was light and fluffy and paired so beautifully with my coffee yum! I think they get enough business here that the donuts don't manage to get stale. Lots of people coming in and out and it's kind of fun to see what everyone chooses for their fix be it bear claw or donut holes. The man sitting next to me was having cheesecake for breakfast! Nice! I was surprised to see they also serve breakfast sandwiches and a full on breakfast plate with pancakes and bacon/sausage for very reasonable prices. This is a good place to go if you want something quick to grab and go but there were a decent number of tables to sit at to enjoy a more leisurely pace. Coffee is self-serve. Only negative is each time I've come either the coffee I wanted was running low or they were low on half and half so they could do a better job making sure their coffee station gets some more attention. The good: I'm a sucker for maple old-fashioned donuts, and this place makes my personal favorite of all time. Always crispy but never oily. I've tried other donuts too, and they're also good. I like that they are clearly hand-made and wonderfully misshapen. The meh: Their coffee is...serviceable. Flavor-wise, I think it's hard to compete with Philz a block away. However, 2 bucks for coffee here vs 6 bucks there is one heck of a compelling argument. The awkward: I heard they're on a month-to-month lease and if they close I'm going to freak out. Local donut shop Passed by here a bunch of times, but went in today for the first time to buy a box of pastries for a friend. I got about 8 donuts, some with sprinkles, some chocolate, and also timbits, cinnamon rolls etc. They gave me a small box so the packing was kind of tight--there was a little bit of grease that "dissolved" through into the cardboard box so the presentation was not so great. But the taste was pretty good. The inside of the store is ok. There are lots of options for pastries, and everything is baked fresh-they change the inventory everyday. He definitely does. I had a craving for a doughnut-like pastry. And it has been a awhile since he had a doughnut. Seriously! This "old-school" bakery is one block away from the Cal Train station. This is a perfect location for grabbing a quick snack for the ride to wherever the heck you're going. As expected, with the convenient location, you'll also pay a higher price on selective items. Although this bakery is not "spit-shine" clean, they just serve simple doughnuts and other pastries fresh from the kitchen in the back. You can smell the treats being made from the streets. I had the Apple-Fritter and a 16 oz cup of French-roast coffee. The $1.50 fritter is thinner than some of the apple fritters from other bakeries, but the apple chunks is visible and the flavor was very powerful. The fresh coffee was just released when I arrived into the bakery and was very soothing and tasty. I also order a couple of Glazed Old-fashion doughnuts and 16 oz of the same coffee for my co-worker. The doughnuts were $.85 each. We can debate that it's pricey. There are other fine bakeries in the Downtown area, which will be my next destination sooner or later. Paid $11 cash for the donuts, which were packed nicely into a cute pink box. So the taste? I only ate the chocolate custard bar. It was soft with a light custard filling. Wished the filling was a bit more eggy & custard-y. Chocolate topping was decent, not overly sweet. As for the rest of the donuts, the coworkers finished them with no complaints... well after all, it was free for them anyway. This place isn't winning any awards for atmosphere, but the lady I dealt with when ordering my one (1) glazed donut was sweet and I have absolutely nothing to complain about. It's a donut shop for goodness sakes! I paid a little over a dollar for my donut and gave the rest as a tip since I don't like carrying change and it's the polite thing to do.
