Living in San Mateo my whole life and just discovered this cute cafe. The host was incredible and super friendly! I'm really indecisive and he was so patient with us but I loved that he would constantly check in :) My friend ordered the Vietnamese iced coffee which was the perfect amount of sweetness and I would totally recommend! I ordered a black coffee which was also really good! It wasn't bitter at all and it didn't require any sugar. For food, I ordered #3 the egg plate and replaced it with pancakes. We found this spot while looking for a mid-afternoon brunch with a classic diner feel, and we got exactly what we came for! We went here on Labor Day around 1 PM, and the restaurant was relatively empty. We were seated right away at a little table near the window. Our waiter was very friendly and made us feel like regulars from the start! I ordered a lox bagel and a side of bacon with coffee, while my partner ordered the grilled cheese and Thai iced tea. Everything we ordered hit the spot! The salmon tasted fresh, with delicious slabs of cream cheese adorning the toasted bagel. It also came with tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions on the side so I could add as much or as little as I wanted. The bacon had a nice crunchy texture, although I did find it somewhat plain tasting. My parter thoroughly enjoyed the grilled cheese and sweet, creamy Thai iced tea. I went with the All American, which came with eggs, hash browns, toast, and choice of meat, of which I ordered the chicken apple sausage. The hash browns came out crispy, just like I like them. The meal was good, however I feel like the price didn't justify the amount or quality of food. I know prices are rising, and this is south bay, but an extra slice of sausage or a few more hash browns would've been nice. I was pretty impressed with my visit to Royal Donut Cafe. I didn't come for their donuts, but for their breakfast and they had some of the best country fried steak I've had a in a while. The interior is very dated so that might turn some people off, but they are expanding the restaurant and taking over the space next door. They said that there is a possibility that they open for dinner in the future too. Staff were very friendly as well. Parking in the area is certainly a pain in the area, but there are paid parking lots near by. Country Fried Steak & Eggs ($15.95) was what I ordered and it was massive. I was stuffed after eating it and the steak had the perfect breading. The sausage gravy was very tasty and the hash browns were also a large portion. The eggs they also cooked really well and they don't overcook them like I accidently do at home because I love runny eggs. It is definitely worth a visit here although I have no input on their donuts or pastries personally. Their breakfast is top tier though and you get large portions. While walking down Broadway a nice man who worked at the barber shop stopped to tell us about this place... So we had to go check it out!! The cafe is very cute, clean and there is ample seating! We went at 11am on a Friday morning so that might have played a role in that. We came in very hungry and got sat right away! It says it comes with grilled onions, cooked salmon lox, benedict sauce and capers. It was one of the worst I've had in a while. The muffin was soggy because the benedict sauce was thin and runny. Not to mention flavorless! The hash browns on the side saved the meal for me. But! The side of sausage was cooked perfectly. Nice flavors , crispy edges and a nice warm center. Menu had a lot of breakfast options available. Small diner vives, but pexi glass between booths as well as covid precaution signage. We had the country fried steak, breakfast burrito, and rocky road pancakes. Pancakes are very fluffy. Burrito quite filling, but I wish the hashbrows were a little more crisp. The cfs was cooked nicely with no batter falling off. If you check on on yelp, you get a free regular donut!
