After a huge dinner friend is craving a donut. Who am I to say no to that?! We head over to this place b/c all the other donut places nearby were closed. We were greeted by a super friendly man. Then he says, "all donuts are 2 for 1 after 8pm." Yup...we lost the ability to speak for a brief moment as we pointed at the cases and bumped into each other as we tried to make a decision. The normal thing would have been to just get 2 donuts. But no, we instead proceed to get 4 donuts and 2 half pints of milk. The guy that helped us was SUPER friendly!! He made quite the impression on us. They sell a variety of other items but we were so focused that we didn't notice. We then proceeded to eat our donuts in the car while driving home. No self control! They were just your typical donuts. If you need a place that's open late then come here. read more

Update: boyfriend recently discovered the some of the "things" including the Ham and cheese croissants. He's a huge fan. ------------------ I am not a donut aficionado, but my boyfriend is a bit of a donut-aholic and he needs to have his old-fashions . I've never sampled anything other than the donut holes, but I must say that they're delicious. I'm not sure if there's a wide selection since the BF is the one that actually brings the goods home, but I do enjoy the glazed variety. One or two satisfies my sweet tooth, and the man gets his old-fashions and is satisfied for the day. Three stars for making us happy and one star for offering "things". read more

It's a pretty run down place, but it's those hole in the wall places with good customer service and decent food. The donuts are amazing and sooooo good. Definitely a place to come back to and grab a quick bite If you're in the go. read more

A lot has changed siince I last wrote about this place, sadly in my opinion it is getting worse... During the course of my last few visits here I saw two long time locals gripe to the owner the place is getting expensive. I just paid $4 for a soda and a stale danish which is a lot more than even a year ago. The place changed hads a year or two ago but they kept it quiet, the couple who ran it slowly disappeared and a new hard working guy was in the picture. My take on the price increases is he now has hired a lot more people so he does not work so much and he has to pay them... My former review critcized the stale baked goods on display in the front window. Apparently they have gone to the next level in service and are now selling very stale danish as fresh. The last two times I went in the danish was crispy and danish are not supposed to be crispy especially the cheese danish... It is obvious they are getting cheap let the food sit until it sells and charge a lot more for it. They are also changing the menu and the Red Velvet cake has dissappeard from the menu which was why I started goig there in addition to the bitchy gal at Bob's up the street. The area is in transition and new more expensive businesses are pushing our places like this one. With the price increases, stale food and filthy tables in the dining area (they were last wiped down in January from the looks of them) I do not expect this place to last very long although it has been on Polk Street for a long time; but that was under other ownership... read more

The donuts are good, the things are great. They have the best value sandwiches on Polk. And the banh mi is pretty damn good, especially at less than $5. This is perhaps my absolute favorite lunch spot. The ladies that work there are super friendly, too. read more

The donuts and service here are better than Bob's! I came here all the time with my dad and always thought this place was better than Bob's and it still is. Donut and things has bagels, sandwiches, banh mi, and great donuts! Their donuts are fluffy and fresh and sometimes they throw in a few extra donut holes :)! The only thing I would change would be their "smoothies" they taste more like milkshakes than smoothies and if they made fresh smoothies I would definitely be there all the time! read more

Great place for Vietnamese sandwiches in the Polk st. area! You can get it for under $5. I'm Vietnamese, so I know what's good and what's not. I think it's even better than the overhyped Saigon Sandwiches on Larkin. Definitely come here! I go here at least twice a week. read more

For a place that claims to have daily fresh baked donuts their Danish was as hard as a rock, the filling they used was so strong if it had been fresh it probably would of been over powering, but as the Danish was stale beyond recognition as a food item it cleared my pallet almost immediately after trying that filling. All I'm saying is for how much more this place is compared to other places on the same street their quality should be better (frankly though the place up the street is just as bad). read more

Decent sandwiches and they offer 4 kinds of Vietnamese sandwiches if I'm too lazy to make the walk to Saigon Sandwiches. The bread they use is much more lighter and not as dense as other Banh Mi places. Today I had the Turkey #1 sandwich on that same bread which is turkey with cream cheese and cranberry sauce and it was pretty good. What I really love from this place is their cream cheese muffins. This place is a hidden gem for banh mi lovers. The baguette is toasted to perfection, and the filling is fresh and savory. They toast the baguette with the meat in it so it's warm, which perfectly contrasts the crisp, cold pickled vegetables. I like it with extra jalapeños! I just started going here. I'm not sure what took me so long, but I'm glad I walked in. The bakery goods are very fresh. I've bought Vietnamese sandwiches a couple times, and they were both very good. I plan to buy donut holes here from now on. I used to buy them down the street, but the prices have gone ridiculously high and I'm not wild about the service. The people are are really polite, the restaurant is very clean. I think this place might be one of Polk Streets' best kept secrets. I plan to stop here often. read more

So I discovered that they make great Vietnamese combo sandwiches here. They make other flavors but I just haven't gotten around to trying them all yet. While these are not the best bunmi I have ever tasted, they are not bad tasting at all and better than most other donut shops around there. And very generous with the filling which is satisfying when you are hungry. Also, they make a good cup of Americano which is great in my book. For $5-$7, you really have a good meal. I've been here a few times and keep forgetting how much I love it! They make solid banh mi sandwiches with all the right components including cold cuts, pate, cilantro, pickled carrots/daikon, and jalapeños. I know banh mi (LA native and huge fan of Saigon Sandwich) and this place is a fantastic option in Nob Hill. Donuts are solid, perhaps not quite as good as Bob's, but a perfect banh mi chaser. My usual go to donut shop is Bob's since its down the street but there's always a line and it takes forever. Since it was an early Sunday morning and I was out cruising with my pup I remember a friend told me this place was better than Bob's so I thought I'd test it out. I was feeling like a glaze twist today and and as I was going to pay I commented how HUGE their donuts were and she told me they were cut a bit smaller today so she gave me some free donut holes. Holy moly! I already thought this was huge. Free donut holes! Winner, winner, chicken dinner =) Repeat customer here for sure. I took a few bites of my twist and its perfect slightly crisp, chewy and sweet goodness. I noticed in a few reviews people were commenting on the buttermilk bar. I'd have to try those out the next time I come back. Nice thing about this place is they have banh mi too if only they were open as late as Bob's for those late night munchines.... Came here over the other similar neighborhood spots because of the high yelp rating. My doughnut did not taste fresh and tough they claimed it was, I pressed them on it while I considered ordering a 2nd, and finally found out after asking several times that none of the doughnuts or other pastries here are made same day! They make everything the day before! In addition, my hot chocolate, which I ordered with whole milk, almost certainly was watered down. I drink enough of these to know. This place may not have donuts in the window, but they're constantly bringing them out HOT and fresh and will pump TONS of filling in them right there while you watch. I think a 4.0-4.5 stars is about right. Ordered the banh mi #4 chicken. They got my order wrong and I ended up with a BBQ pork instead. I ended up not asking for a new one because the pork actually looked good haha. The two things I like about here is that they really load the banh mi up with ingredients, and lots and lots of pickled daikon and carrots. And the fact that they still keep the prices so low (under $6) when it seems like every other banh mi place has gone up....good spot in my book. read more

Call me crazy, but was feeling ambitious and had to do a Bobs vs. Donuts and Things, Coke vs Pepsi style glazed donut taste test. It was close, but Donuts and things edged out Bobs. Donuts and Things was sweeter and lighter and just plain better. However in terms of service, Bob's hands down. The old man at Donuts and Things isn't he friendliest guy ive ever met. read more
