It's not a five star doughnut but Gateway is a five star establishment. We're not aspiring for perfect texture or perfect glaze ratios, but they're open 24/7, are fast and friendly, have an healthy selection, and most importantly, they have the best maple bar I've ever had. They are a cozy corner shop that I hope stays forever. Shops like these are the cornerstone of every big city and I find their presence comforting. Needed to pick up a quick dessert after enjoying the most amazing pizza a few doors down at Outta Sight. Gateway drew us in with their stacks of pink donut boxes--an immediate sign that this is a legit donut place. Our go-tos: blueberry and crunch which were immediately recognizable in the glass case. The lady behind register was very friendly and before we could assume it was cash only, she brought the POS out for us to tap and go. Gotta love it when a humble mom & pop keeps up w/tech. One excited bite out of each donut and we knew that Gateway would be our fav shop in the city. These donuts are AMAZING. They're fresh but more interestingly, they're sweet without being sickening (think opposite spectrum of a Krispy Kreme). I'm sure there's some kind of sorcery involved behind the recipe, but whatever they're doing is incredible. Donuts are just ok but too pricey. I think $40 for two dozen donuts is way over the national average. We are in a post-pandemic world where much of the food in the city that used to be cheap and good is now overpriced and mediocre. The nights I spent deep in my addiction were some of the darkest and loneliest of my life. This donut shop, with the wonderful clerk i dubbed "donut grandma" always treated me with respect and kindness, always making a note to ask about my significant other/my dog/something that she knew was special to me. And on some of those nights, it kept me going. The superb maple twists, or bars, or donut holes, or really anything they produce is worth the trek to the tl. If they offer to heat them up? Listen. Yeah... it's a corner coffee/donut shop on a not so beautiful corner in the tenderloin district. It is what it is. I'm doing some work in the area for awhile and just stopped in for a coffee before heading across the street. If you're looking for a cup of cheap hot coffee stop in. If you're looking for anything else walk on. The inside is a little bit worn and not a great ambience to meet for coffee since all the tables and chairs are to one side of the room. The lone donut shop in the 'Loin. I haven't been back here in a long time. Today, I dropped in to pick up a dozen for the office. The supply was plenty. They have all kinds of donuts. They don't fry them in old oil either because you do not have that old oil aftertaste or smell. Service was quick. Donuts are done nicely, not misshaped. I also ordered a mocha. That was a tad too sweet for me but it is still cheaper than Peet's or the fancy coffee shop across the street. read more

The staff at the counter are quick and precise. They are straightforward and will speak up if you behave inappropriately. The best time to visit is around 2-3 AM when you can often find a fresh batch of warm, moist donuts. They are amazing! While walking past this seemingly innocent stop I noticed a couple patrons nearby eating some donuts with anger (yes, imagine people biting into a donut like the Cookie Monster and that is honestly what I saw) so I thought it must be decent. Well, I was spot on accurate as it was just that - ok... It's not a five star diner but almost more of a quick stop for locals, and for the price (my lemon filled donut was $2) it was decent. The overall feel to the place was meh and the donut was the same. The real problem wasn't the food (average), timeliness (super quick), price (ok), but instead it was the outside and shape of the location/building. Maybe Saturday morning isn't the best time to visit, but the outside of the place was far from... sanitary.
