My husband's sister and her friend were visiting from out of town, so it was a group of five with me, my husband, our daughter, my sister-in-law, and her friend. The food overall was outstanding, and it was a great spot to take out-of-town guests. To kick things off, we started with a dozen of their legendary Charbroiled Oysters. To be completely honest, we were a little disappointed with them this time. Normally, Drago's oysters are swimming in that famous, rich garlic-butter sauce, but this batch was not as juicy and lacked that extra sauce we are used to getting. They weren't completely dry, but definitely missing that signature butteriness. On the bright side, the rest of the meal was flawless! My sister-in-law ordered a bottle of Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay for her, her friend, and me to share, which was beautifully chilled and paired perfectly with everything. For entrees, my husband and I both ordered the Boneless Beef Short Rib. It was incredibly tender--true melt-in-your-mouth perfection--served over creamy mashed potatoes with rich gravy and topped with fresh sautéed spinach. My sister-in-law got the Seafood Pasta, which was completely decadent with a rich cream sauce over angel hair and a very generous mound of sweet lump crabmeat right on top. Her friend ordered Mama Ruth's Seafood Gumbo and loved that authentic, deep New Orleans dark roux flavor. I actually dined at Drago's twice during my visit to New Orleans. Our first night there, we dined after spending time at the Spirits Bar. Our waiter was on point. The atmosphere is lively, and it's a very spacious area. I ordered the Crawfish Étouffée and it was delicious! It doesn't look like a lot when they first bring out the plate but it was very filling. I had the spicy El Drago to wash it all down. It has jalapeño and pineapple tequila and topped off with a jalapeño. Very tasty and paired well with my dish. My second visit was for lunch on our last full day. I came back for the oysters. Everyone has been talking about the oysters, and I hadn't had any and said, I would make it back just for this. Our party ordered chargrilled oysters to share and a few of us also ordered raw oysters as well. They are on special during lunch, so go check it out. The oysters are 10/10! I went to this restaurant on Wednesday at opening. My party was small and only included two people, overall, I would say the experience is pretty disappointing. The restaurant is located in the Hilton Hotel near the Riverwalk, and it's relatively dilapidated. You can tell it hasn't been updated in quite a few years, and the menus we received were a bit dirty and sticky. Those working, the host stand, seemed more concerned with getting people sitting down than actually talking, and greeting you. We let them know we had a reservation, and they set us at a table with two chairs next to the walkway. Considering the restaurant was relatively empty, we asked to be seated in a booth and were met with hesitation, and not allowed. However, as we sat there waiting for our small order of half oysters, and a side of fries we watched a table of three people get the same booth we were denied. We went to Drago's during our visit to New Orleans. We had been told by several friends and residents (one street car driver) that this was the place for chargrilled oysters. My friends and I decided to come here while waiting for our flight home from NOLA. The bartender at our hotel suggested going to Drago's, and we enjoyed our experience. Started with Chargrilled Oysters which were pretty good, however some of the cut up pieces of roll were stale. Then ordered Shuckee Duckee which is an apparent original dish there. This dish is supposed to have a "twice-fried Duck Leg quarter" in paste with Oysterz, well I don't order fried food often, however the Duck Leg did not appear in the least to be Twice Fried as it was not crisp at all, seemed Flash Fried. Party of 1 and was offered bar seating for quicker service so I obliged since I ended up doing takeout. Friend that I was with ordered some oysters that were grilled. I'm not the biggest oyster person but whatever they put on them they taste mighty fine! Cooking them the flavor is also improved.
