Its N'Awlins time, and I wanted to share some places I hit for the first time, as well as others I returned to. I've seen Dooky Chase on TV several times, and I said I gotta hit this place the next time I'm in Crescent City. I started off w/ the beet salad, and ended with the fried chicken meal (all dark meat). The salad was a big portion, and had two kinds of beets. The dressing was nice & tart, and contrasted nicely vs the sugary beets. This was my best meal in MS or N'Awlins. The fried chicken was moist & tender, and the batter was seasoned to perfection. Dare I say, it was the best fried chicken I have ever had. Kailynn (?) was an awesome bartender/waitress. She was super nice, worked her ass off, and made sure I had everything I needed. The hostess Maya was also super cool, and sat me at the bar bc the main dining room was full. Regarding the ambiance, its like someone's house. DC's has been an institution since 1941, and was a regular meeting place for Civil Rights activists. DC is a must visit if you are looking for outstanding fried chicken, friendly & warm service, all in an old skool setting. I heard their red beans & rice are worth trying also. read more

I brought my parents to Dooky Chase restaurant to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary the service we received from our waitress, waitress helper, and even the maître d' was so friendly and welcoming. I've had better food in NOLA. But the history and vibes inside are unmatched. You can feel the story when you walk through the dining room. The fried chicken was just average to me. Sure it got better dipping it in hot sauce. Good crunch to the batter. Mac n cheese is a thicker cheese. So it does feel a little heavy. Greens might have been the best thing I had. Dooky Chase is a New Orleans institution, so it honestly pains me to write such a negative review. I really wanted this meal to live up to its legendary reputation, but unfortunately it was a major disappointment. Our table ordered the gumbo, seafood platter, pork chop, veal, and chicken Creole. The clear standout was the pork chop--it was absolutely delicious and easily the best dish we had. The seafood platter, however, was a letdown. The shrimp had a metallic taste, the stuffed crab tasted old and contained very little actual crab, the oysters were fried perfectly, but the fish was underwhelming and not fried properly. Nearly everything on the platter was excessively salty--to the point that it almost burned the roof of your mouth. The chicken Creole looked great when it arrived, but the flavor didn't match the presentation. It was incredibly bland and lacked the rich seasoning you'd expect from a classic New Orleans dish. The okra tasted undercooked, and the chicken itself felt unfinished, almost as if it hadn't been fully cooked or the recipe was missing key ingredients. The veal was just average. The breading wasn't adhering to the meat, and like several other dishes, it was far too salty. The gumbo reminded me of a Zatarain's gumbo mix rather than a homemade New Orleans gumbo. It had the taste of a boxed roux, and the meat seemed like it had been sitting in a pot for days. It tasted old rather than fresh. Even the drinks were surprisingly small, especially by New Orleans standards. The service was equally disappointing. We waited nearly 45 minutes before our waiter took our order. We had to ask multiple times for bread, and it was never replenished. After bringing the check, it took another 30 minutes for someone to come back and collect it. What makes this review difficult to write is that everyone we encountered was genuinely kind and welcoming. The staff's friendliness was never the issue. Unfortunately, great hospitality also requires attentive service and quality food, and both fell well below expectations. I gave Dooky Chase two stars because of its historic importance to New Orleans and the respect I have for what it has meant to the city's culinary legacy. That's exactly why this experience was so disappointing. I expected the level of excellence the restaurant is known for, but it simply wasn't reflected in either the food or the service. The best restaurant we've dined in, in New Orleans so far, for its authentic Creole Cuisine, is family owned, and the catalyst of culture, jazz, art, social progress and civil rights. A very exquisite restaurant, the food is excellent. We tried several things to taste. We had a cup of gumbo, red beans and rice, fried chicken, candied yams, macaroni and cheese , and shrimp linguini. The gumbo was excellent and rich in flavor. The photo does not capture the great taste. The yams were moist and delicious, and not missing a beat in the sweetness. The macaroni and cheese was excellent, light and creamy and not overly cheesy. It was perfect. The best fried chicken so far in NO. The meat was so moist and the crust so light, crispy and flaky, with excellent flavor. You don't need to worry if you're watching your daily intake, like some chicken places. The shrimp linguini was delicious, with a very creamy sauce, mushroom, and plenty of fresh peas. Be sure to make a reservation very early (more than a week or two ahead) because they are always packed. There is a sign on the outside that says must have a reservation. So many famous people have frequented this restaurant. Their names are well documented on cement stepping stones. You'll love it, and the beautiful art and decor inside. read more

I was happy to walk the paved sidewalk where the hall of fame names are listed. It was exciting to see the names of politicians, presidents, and famous people on the sidewalk. The restaurant is rich in history, and the artwork is stunning. I did not enjoy my food, but I enjoyed the ambience and conversations with guests. Visited here about 2 weeks ago with my family. Not a great experience unfortunately. Host took us in and looked confused as to where he was going to seat us. He kept telling us to wait here (twice), then we finally sat in a room. Food overall was ok, not great. Fried chicken was very crispy, but didn't have a lot of flavor (unlike Dizzy's Cafe which is way better). Gumbo was amazing though. But other dishes were just meh. Bigger issue was our server who kept messing up our orders. We asked for Mac and cheese (never came), fried shrimp (oysters instead came out) and she disappeared at times. Worst part was she messed up our check on 3 occasions (over charged a few items). Each check had a new issue. Overall while all were sweet and kind (including the owner), more attention should be spent on treating each table and customers with full attention and be more detailed oriented. read more

A Heartbreaking Visit to a Once Legendary Institution If I can give zero stars, I would. As a native New Orleanian, walking through the doors of Dooky Chase on September 24, 2025, for my mother's birthday should have felt like coming home. The last time I dined here was post-Katrina, when the late, great Leah Chase was alive--moving gracefully through her kitchen, ensuring every plate carried her signature love, care, and the unmistakable soul of New Orleans Creole cooking. Back then, Dooky Chase wasn't just a restaurant; it was an experience--flavors that wrapped you up like family, a space that held history, pride, and excellence in every bite. This time, however, what awaited us was a painful reminder of how far this legendary restaurant has fallen. We came with high hopes, ordering all the classics that defined Sunday dinners and family celebrations--gumbo, fried chicken, mac and cheese, mustard greens, red beans and rice, stuffed shrimp, seafood platter, and fried soft-shell crab. For dessert, we closed with bread pudding and peach cobbler. Each dish, we thought, would reconnect us with those cherished memories. Instead, we were left stunned at the lack of care, seasoning, and soul. The gumbo, though slightly flavorful, was watery and thin. When I asked if seafood was included, I was assured "shrimp and blue crab." Yet my cup was barren--neither shrimp nor crab touched my spoon. For a restaurant that boasts itself as a cornerstone of Creole cuisine, this was crushing. The fried chicken arrived dark, nearly burnt, and biting into it revealed pink, undercooked meat. Mustard greens tasted straight out of a can--overpowered with vinegar, completely void of the slow-simmered, smoky tenderness that generations of grandmothers perfected. Mac and cheese, once the crown jewel of soul food, looked wrong before the first bite, and confirmed my suspicion with its bland, lifeless flavor. The red beans were the greatest insult of all. Hard, undercooked, lacking creaminess, and seasoned with nothing recognizable. No onion, no garlic, no salt or pepper. In New Orleans, cooking red beans poorly is almost a sin--this is the dish that anchors the city, and here it was unrecognizable. The seafood dishes were no better. The soft-shell crab was dried out and flavorless, while the stuffed shrimp were fried hard as leather, robbed of all succulence. Each plate felt like it had been rushed, overlooked, and served without pride. We prayed dessert would redeem the meal, but instead the peach cobbler and bread pudding were served in tiny portions, both lacking the warmth and comfort that should define Creole sweets. They looked and tasted like afterthoughts. For all of this, we paid more than $300 plus tip. We walked out not only unsatisfied, but with a heavy sadness--for what was once the heartbeat of Creole dining now feels like a hollow shell of its former self. Dooky Chase's website still proclaims its proud history--its role as a gathering place for civil rights leaders, artists, and presidents. It still carries the weight of Leah Chase's legacy, a woman who was not only a chef, but the Queen of Creole Cuisine, a cultural icon who believed in feeding people's souls through her food. And yet, what is being served today would never meet her standards. Leah would not approve of food stripped of its love, care, and authenticity. As locals, we want Dooky Chase to succeed. We want to continue recommending it to visitors, to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones within its walls. But as it stands, I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone. New Orleans is filled with establishments still honoring tradition, still cooking with flavor, love, and pride. Until Dooky Chase finds its way back to Leah's standard, it has lost its right to claim the crown of Creole cuisine. Leah once said, "You make gumbo, you make history." My hope is that this family-owned institution remembers its history, rediscovers its flavor, and returns to the soul food temple it once was. For the sake of her legacy, for the city, and for those of us who grew up knowing what Dooky Chase used to mean--please, do better. read more

This place is amazing. We arrived a bit before the 5:30 opening time. So we had to wait until opening. Then we were all seated quickly. The venue is absolutely gorgeous, especially on Valentine the cayenne pepper color with eye popping museum quality art work. We started with a drink. The pour was okay not generous. My wife had the valentine prix fixe. I ordered the mamere crab soup, fried chicken and onion rings. The prix fixe included gumbo or crab soup. My wife was over the moon with the gumbo. As I was with the crab soup. The flavors were so deep. Wow. The fried chicken and the stuffed flounder were killers. The fish came with large portion of crab atop the flaky fillet. So disappointed, this restaurant has been on my bucket list. Through no fault of their own they suffered an electrical outage due to an earlier accident maybe that's why things were off. There were 8 of us, Stick with the tried and true fried chicken and peach cobbler. The sides were mediocre. One person at our table said the green beans looked and tasted canned. The stuffed shrimp as well as the crab soup had very little crab and the fried batter over the stuffed shrimp was too much. The lukewarm sides all arrived before our entrees. One of our guests ordered the seafood platter. Her meal arrived after the rest of the table had completed their entrees. We complained and got the explanation that the item takes longer to prepare. When we originally asked our server about the delay he said it's coming! They ultimately comped the entree. Service was mediocre as well. At one point our server told us he was getting his manager because "I'm not fin to fuss with you folks." I'll give them another try so I can view the artwork and order the fried chicken. read more

The okra as a side was wonderful. My partner ordered the creole chicken I believe and he really enjoyed it. For dessert we tried all the things. Peach cobbler was ok- wouldn't order again. We went to Dooky Chase for Thanksgiving. Dooky Chase is steep in history. It served as a meeting place for civil rights activists to strategize while eating some delicious, Creole food. During segregation, the restaurant was a place for people of color to dine and enjoy a night out. It was also the first art gallery for black artists in New Orleans and the inspiration for the restaurant that Princess Tiana from Disney's Princess and the Frog. So, on to the food. The gumbo was delicious. There was a variety of meat including sausage, chicken, and shrimp with a bit of rice. The meat was tender and the broth was flavourful. There was some rice. It needed a bit more rice but it was an overall great start to the meal. I ordered the pork chop dinner. It came with carrot souffle and mustard greens. I had to send the first pork chop back because it was over cooked with little seasonings. When I first told the waiter about the pork chop, he responded, very politely "Oh, okay. I'm sorry about that... I'll get you a box. " Ummm, what? I then spoke with the hostess about the issue and she had the chef cook me another pork chop. The flavor of the second pork chop was delicious and very tender. The mustard greens were good and the carrot souffle was excellent!. The turkey, corn bread dressing, and greens were good. The holiday sangria was really good! The Mac and cheese was just okay. The service was excellent also! Overall, I give Dooky Chase a solid B. Iwould definitely eat here again. read more

Dooky Chase is an institution in New Orleans. When they visit the city, Presidents and dignitaries put it on their schedules. How is it for regular folk just looking for a meal? Service is friendly and personable but a little slow here and there, like getting the menu initially and refills on water. Don't come here if you're on a tight schedule. Shrimp Clemenceau is an unusual dish with potatoes, peas, mushrooms in a light garlic sauce. This was a surprisingly unique formulation for a kitchen known for its more traditional dishes like stewed chicken, shrimp creole, red beans, and fried chicken. For dessert, the bread pudding and peach cobbler (the only two choices, at least at lunch) are both excellent. The atmosphere is bright and colorful with pictures of famous guests alternating with local art on every wall. When the room is full, the conversations get going. Expect the usual New Orleans dining room experience with lively loud talk and the occasional missed word. Special mention for Ms. Chase's "gumbo z'herbs," a dish available only on Good Friday. It's a combination of beet tops, cabbage, romaine, watercress along with mustard, turnip and collard greens plus some smoke sausage and ham. It's delicious and almost pointless to mention here because it's tough to get a table on that day but if you can score one, it's a near-perfect dish. read more

I have to say this restaurant is one of the best deals around. Not only were the prices great but the food was plentiful and delicious! The decor was nice and they do have a dress code that is on a plaque right where you check in. They don't allow athletic wear or shorts. Jeans and a polo are ok for men, and I wore black jeans and a blouse. Once we checked in they told us we could wait in the bar area. I ordered a Rum Punch but it wasn't ready by the time they sat us, so they brought it to the table after. I can't believe I forgot to take pictures of my food, probably because I was so ready to taste it, lol. We both tried the gumbo which had a medium roux with 2 types of sausage, shrimp and I believe chicken. We agreed it was one of the better testing bowls we had during our visit. I had the red beans and rice with fried chicken and really enjoyed it. I appreciate that they ask you if you want the fried chicken white meat, dark meat, or mixed. I went with the mixed and it was very crunchy, and so flavorful. Of course they have Louisiana hot sauce if you would like. The portions were so big we could not finish it all, and had to box it up. Our server was very nice and attentive, and gave recommendations. I would definitely go back again, and would have during our stay, but they were booked up. We had a bit of a wait despite our reservation, but the hostess was incredibly apologetic and kept us informed the whole time--apparently two large parties were lingering. I ordered the Southern Fried Chicken with green beans and mac & cheese--straight comfort food heaven. Crispy, seasoned just right, and the sides tasted homemade in the best way. VERY disappointed by the food and service. Perhaps this place was once great when Leah Chase was alive, but it's not worth the visit now. Had a dinner reservation for a Thursday night and arrived 10 minutes early. We were asked to wait in the bar for a bit, which of course is fine, but we sat there for over 45 minutes before being called to our table. After being seated, the service speed was no better. Despite the restaurant being only ~80% full, it was probably 15 to minutes for a waiter to come to our table and introduce himself. Then another 15 minutes for him to take drink and appetizer orders. Fifteen more to take our dinner order. Another 15+ for the appetizer to arrive, then maybe 20 more for the main course to arrive. Then we were held hostage for another 20+ minutes for him to come by and offer to bring the check, when then appeared quite some time after that. If the food would have been any good, perhaps the terrible service would have been worth it. Sadly.... no. The "best" part of the meal was the crab cake appetizer over a fried green tomato. (pictured) It was just OK, but certainly no better than something I could have whipped up at home. My dining partner and I both ordered crawfish etouffee as the main course, and that was almost inedible. The crawfish were rubbery and had an awful flavor, and the dish was so overly salty that we could barely choke it down. As my partner (who didn't even finish hers) said, it tasted like someone simply poured a whole container of Tony Chachere's seasoning over it. This was just amazing from start to finish. We were sitting at our table, not long after being sat, and a nice woman came by and assured us our waiter would be right over. That lady was Dooky's daughter, Stella. She is such a lovely woman. Every wait staff we encountered was wonderful. Terry, our main waiter was fantastic. We got a seafood platter, beet salad, and fried chicken. Everything was wonderful. The art and accolades were the perfect touch. Truly a wonderful experience. Take your time and simply enjoy the experience. The food is delicious and is prepared by a family that has been in the food business for nearly 90 years. The problem is this: you will want to sample everything on the menu, but your stomach just ain't got that much room. The fried chicken and red beans are simply fabulous.
