I have been to Dooky Chase Restaurant many times over the years, but not since the pandemic. The menu has been expanded and as much more upscale, but they were smart enough to keep their good old fried chicken. That's what I had and it was great, particularly paired with the recommended stewed okra, which was as close to home as you can get. The artwork is unbelievable, and the staff was friendly and kind. Truly a dining experience! Ambience is a step into a well curated art gallery. Art ranging from Charles White to Jonathan Green! We were fortunate to get in at opening but I highly recommend a reservation as there were no major conventions or conferences in the city! We were greeted warmly and seated. The entire service team was attentive and on point. The food lived up to its billing! Gumbo was good and the stuffed shrimp were perfection. The bread pudding was good, I didn't prefer the amount of sauce that accompanied it though. The highlight was speaking to Stella Chase Reese. The epitome of grace and wisdom. Here's the thing, I've never seen my partner clean up fried chicken the way he did and we've had our fair share of fried chicken back home in Los Angeles, CA. The skin was crispy and so flavorful - even the chicken breast which tends to be the driest piece was juicy and so well seasoned. 10/10 we may have ruined fried chicken for ourselves, is what i'm trying to say because it was THAT good. The peach cobbler looked like a mess, maybe because we ordered take out? But for whatever it's worth, it still tasted good. The lavender lemonade vodka cocktail we got while we waited for our order was so refreshing and well crafted. This cocktail definitely sparked the need for us to find ourselves a bottle of lavender syrup as soon as we got home to make our own. BUT - the service and customer care experience just left such a bad taste in my mouth that it's hard for me to give this place 5 stars. To be fair, we did NOT make a reservation which was our oversight. We thought maybe we could see if they'd take walk ins or if anything we'd just order take out and eat at a park we found near by in google maps. As soon as we walked in, the host asked if we had a reservation and as soon as they found out we didn't, it was like we didn't exist. I asked if we could order take out and they directed us to the bar area on the other side of the building. We walked over to the bar area and I've never had a bartender make less eye contact or small talk. The lady who took my order at the end of the bar was... not very friendly. She couldn't really hear me and seemed somewhat rude to be honest. I asked if we could eat at the bar area since no one was there and she said I'd have to ask the host. At that point I was already so over being there that I didn't want to interact with anyone else if I didn't have to. It took 20-30 mins for us to get our food and we went to a park just a short walk away. Would I come back? Sure, I'd give this place another visit with a reservation made to see if my experience is any different but g'damn this place and their employees seem so much more pretentious than it needs to be. It also shouldn't matter if I'm ordering take out or dining in to be treated with better service. Well, it is Dooky Chase...what more can I say about the new orleans staple. Beautiful art and photos of famous patrons are on display while you wait to be seated at the busy institution. The dining room is classy l, but with a family feel. The bathrooms are clean and beautiful (I hate dirty bathrooms) The food! Hubby had the GF fried chicken with rice and beans. He loved it. I had the regular fried chicken (give me that gluten! Lol) with string beans. I really liked both items. Also, try the rum punch. It is a winner. The restaurant hostess was frazzled when we arrived for lunch around 1:30 PM on a Thursday. They had three large parties booked around 2:00 PM. She said they were booked for the next 2 1/2 hours. The bar was practically empty, but when we tried to sit there, the hostess said they were also booked. About 10 minutes later, while we were weighing our options, our suitcases in tow, and she said she could seat us. We had just arrived from the airport and were hungry. We thanked her profusely. The menu was limited. The majority of the options were shrimp, which I didn't want. I opted for three vegetables: string beans with potatoes, sweet potatoes, and mac & cheese. The string beans were good (5/5). The sweet potatoes were good (5/5). The mac & cheese was different from what I expected (1/5). It was more like cheesy Kraft Mac & Cheese. A good number of servers/staff were on hand to assist with the party in the dining room, while the other parties were located in private rooms. The service was pretty good, and our waiter was quite cordial. We enjoyed our food and drinks and were in and out quickly. Many customers entered looking for a warm lunch. This place was the highlight of the trip. Ever since I saw them on high on the Good on Netflix I had to get there. The food was so good. The chicken was tender and moist and so was the bread pudding. I can't say how classy it was, the art on the walls just felt real old world New Orleans and I loved it. The server was so friendly and sweet especially since we got there right when the does open. Came here while visiting New Orleans with some friends and had to try this spot after hearing many great things about it... and it did not disappoint! Got a lunch reservation at 2pm on a Saturday -- highly recommend getting a reservation as it gets very very busy. We arrived early but were told that we would get seated right at our reservation time. Service was great, however, we did have to wait over 45 minutes for our food to arrive, which is probably the longest I've ever waited. Luckily the food was absolutely worth it! Got the signature fried chicken which came with three pieces of their creole seasoned chicken and a side of mac and cheese. Accompanying the chicken was a very small side of pickled kale salad which complimented the richness of the fried chicken and mac and cheese. Everything was absolutely delicious... the fried chicken was outstanding! Perfectly seasoned, juicy and crunchy. I was so excited to try this place as it's a New Orleans staple... been here since 1941, though I must admit that the name didn't excite me at all! The ambiance is light, open, with an old school formal look... Table cloths and bold red walls. The Zulu King on one side and the queen on the other. They were busy, so I figured that's a good sign. Started with garlic bread, which was good! The gumbo also had great flavor, but didn't have not 1 shrimp in it, not cool! Again, it was tasty so, there's that. Honestly, I really had my mouth fixed for char-broiled oysters, which we could not order since it was lunch time-- that was disappointing! Anyway, I had the shrimp Clemenceaux and that was packed with shrimp pretty decent flavor.... Note, it does heat up very well. The service was disappointing, our waiter did not return to our table for refills or to check in... even after I had to flag him down and tell him that my seafood gumbo was missing the seafood- note the video, this was right as I received my bowl he said he would handle it, but NOTHING! PROs: The food is obviously divine. I got the shrimp creole and it was perfect. The sauce was so good that I kept eating spoonfuls of it even after I ate all of the shrimp. Rather than have rice, I asked for mac n cheese as a side. Wow. It was the best mac n cheese of my life! It was perfectly creamy with the right amount of pepper for a nice kick. YUM! For dessert I ordered the bread pudding - something that I would pass on next time. CONs: The meal started out with a nice surprise of one of the Chase family members welcoming me to their restaurant. However, things took a turn whenever my drink, my food, and anything else took so long. I kept looking around to realize that my server had been assigned to basically half of the tables in the restaurant. For a restaurant that is based on reservations only, it was frustrating for the service to not match the quality of the food. I was at the restaurant for 2 hours as one person eating alone. I finally got a chance to swing by and try this staple. What holds me back is the hours as they are mostly visitor/tourist hours and not working hour friendly. We made reservations but came a little early and were accommodated. One thing I would say is service is a little slow. We sat at the bar while waiting and the bartender served another couple before us which set the mood a little off but they made up for it. The waitress also moved a little slow so have a little patience when visiting. The food was really good and honestly what we came for anyway. Everything was fresh and made with love. Visiting Dooky Chase's Restaurant has been on my bucket list since I was 13 years old and watched the Princess and the Frog for the first time. I'm 27, finally made it to NOLA, and made it my mission to dine here. My experience was nothing short of what I'd imagine. It was absolutely brilliant. I made reservations for my husband and I two weeks in advance, which I'd recommend. We visited for brunch on a Sunday and I don't think we'd had gotten a seat if we didn't have reserved tabled. Not without a lengthy wait. The entrance and waiting area showcases the restaurant's rich history, the walls adorned with news paper articles, awards, and photos of celebrities and politicians dining with the owners. Even if you have to wait for your seat, you'll find it's easy to be distracted with all the portraits and readings available. We were greeted by our very friendly server who brought us crispy, buttery, golden garlic bread. I ordered the famous Red Beans and Rice ($14.95) that came with 2 pieces of fried chicken and paired that with the recommend wine, the La Crema Pinot Nior. The pairing was excellent, and my main dish was heavenly, the blend of spices a magical delight. There was just the right amount of sausage and rice. The fried chicken was fantastic! Beautifully crunchy and full of flavor - I could have easily eaten twice the amount I was served. My husband ordered the Shrimp Clemeneau (shrimp sautéed with garlic sauce, peas, mushrooms, and brabant potatoes, $18.95). If you like butter and garlic, this is the dish for you. While we both found it a little overwhelming, especially towards the bottom of the dish which is drowned in the sauce, everything above was delicious. Wonderful flavor and a very unique blend of seasoning. There potatoes were roasted perfectly and the shrimp was delightful. Of course, we couldn't leave without trying some sides and dessert, especially since we'd travelled from so far. We tried a cup of Creole Gumbo ($7.95) that we both LOVED. By far, the best gumbo we ate during our entire stay in NOLA. The Stewed Okra and Jambalaya ($4.95) were equally as delicious. We ordered both dessert options, Praline Bread Pudding and Peach Cobbler. I honestly couldn't pick which I favored as both were out of this world! I highly recommend ordering both! A couple tidbits/recommendations: Please make reservations, especially if you're visiting on a Sunday. Also, the restaurant is not in the French Quarter, or anywhere touristy. We chose to take an Uber from our hotel. You can also take the bus if you have the time and/or understand the bus routes. There is a dress code which can be found on the restaurants website. Classic soul food that makes you feel like you are at grandma's house. I had the red beans with fried chickens. The red beans was flavorful with the right amount of rice. The chicken moist and seasoned. The waitress was sweet and she was very attentive as we never went to Dolly Chase all these years. She suggested the homemade lemonade and us was delicious since I don't really drink alcohol. The restaurant decor celebrates the life of their founder and the many pictures of the famous guest including dignitaries and former presidents. I have watched so many cooking shows that featured this restaurant and the former owner who has now transitioned. I am so disappointed in the service and the food. I have been wanting to come here for years. I just got here for the Essence Festival and I really wish I had asked a local person about it before going. My Lyft drivers both stated that it has gone down and even the valet guy at the hotel told me he would never have recommended that restaurant to me. Apparently, the recipes have been changed since Ms.Chase has transitioned. The greens were decent, the sweet potatoes had an overindulgence of cinnamon, and the macaroni cheese taste like Velveeta was in it. The fried chicken needed some salt. And I wish I had just went to Popeyes. If you are from out of town, skip this one. I got to the restaurant at about 1 o'clock and it was not very crowded yet. I had to wait to be seated in the dining room so I opted for the bar. When I got to the bar, I wanted to face the stairwell and the door because I don't like sitting with my back towards the door in an establishment. There was no one else sitting at the bar. I would've been the only person. The bartender asked me to sit by the stairs with my back towards the door. And I told him, this is crazy, and there are too many rules to eat there. I had the stuffed shrimp and everyone else had the red beans. I loved my dish and the red beans I tasted were incredible...I don't eat chicken and they all come with a side of fried chicken which is why I didn't order the beans. We had for entrees the fried chicken with baked macaroni and court bullion (redfish dish). Both were well executed. My husband said the fried chicken was the best that he's ever had. Sooooooo goood! I was in town for an airport conference. A native recommended that we tried Dooky Chase. I got the 3-piece fried chicken; you can pick your pieces. I got a breast and 2 wings, along with a stuffed potato, which was filled with cheese and creole seasoning. The chicken was fresh and hot! It was marinated and seasoned to perfection. We were trying to decide between Dooky Chase's and Willie Mae's for our first lunch but when we looked it up, Willie Mae's was temporarily closed due to a fire. That settled it for us. After checking the GPS we decided to walk up from the Jung Hotel. It's an interesting walk from Canal St to Dooky Chase's. Thankfully it wasn't so humid that we felt like we were in a sauna but at the same time it wasn't cool so bring a bottle of water. The walk was alright. We walked by a cemetery, the overpass, some sketchy areas, a frat maybe and some run down housing. If that sounds like something that might make you uncomfortable, take a cab. When we arrived at Dooky's there was still 15 minutes until opening and there was a couple ahead of us. Within 5 minutes of opening there was a lineup around the corner. The staff didn't open the doors right at opening, it ran a little late but they got us in really quickly. The place has a really cool vibe to it and it feels like a lot of history is in this restaurant. The staff here are really friendly, got us our menu in no time and some water. We had a quick scan of the menu and it was obvious that fried chicken was happening. We ended up getting sides of jambalaya, mac and cheese, potato salad as well as some stuff shrimp. Food was really nice. Fried chicken was good, had a nice thin crisp. The sides were all awesome. We had a few various of mac and cheese in NOLA and we liked all of them. Potato salad was nice but the stuffed shrimp was just excellent. We ended our meal with peach cobbler which was also excellent. Would recommend all the above. So who are we to deny ourselves of the deliberate indulgence So we went and we were blown away by the history 1st!! I did notice Yelpers that there were a few reviews that didn't appear positive or appealing, however because we were here we jumped in to make our own assessment. The infusion of spices in the air was very powerful. The concrete thanks to historical figures was wonderful. A feeling of being among such greatness was very powerful and enlightening. Where do I begin. We were taking my Friends son for his first year at Xavier. My first time in the city but I knew I wanted to experience this restaurant and what an experience it was! The ambiance was superb, however let me tell you about the young lady that greeted us at the entry way. She was kind, courteous and efficient. The experience didn't stop there, once we were seated the service was excellent not to mention the Chase family coming around to say words of encouragement to the new college student. It's rare to go to a restaurant where every dish is delicious. We got shrimp clemenceau, stuffed shrimp, crawfish etouffee, seafood platter, gumbo and fried chicken. The stuffed shrimp wasn't my favorite but everything else was wonderful. The fried chicken was one of the best I've had- crispy and juicy at the same time. The gumbo was also the best one we had in town. The Clemenceau and etouffee were also wonderful, though both were my first time so I cannot compare. The desserts were also surprisingly good. There are places that want to serve you foam and single bite courses to try and earn Michelin stars. This is never going to be one of those places. Dooky Chase's personifies history as so much of it was made or influenced here. Anyoywith an appreciation for history should come just to sit in the same dining room so many extraordinary people have shared. Of course, there's also the food, which might be good enyto make you forget all about the history and cultural relevance of the place. We tried several things but what floored me was the fried chicken, red beans and rice, and the bread pudding. They probably won't even let you keep a restaurant open in New Orleans if you can't make good bread pudding, and Dooky Chase's made the best I had anywhere. Everyone was wonderful, the service couldn't have been better. Just make sure and make yourself a reservation unless you want to wait an hour for a table, but let me tell you, it would easily be worth an hour wait. Now, for my fellow Disney nerds, Princess Tiana is the only Disney princess based off s real person, and Leah Chase happened to be that person. She and her husband opened the restaurant many years ago, built on the back of her hard work and determination. Well, this was my second visit to New Orleans and to Dooky Chase. My first visit was memorable, the gumbo and fried chicken were lingering memories I wanted to duplicate on my second trip, however it wasn't meant to be. The service was top notch, we ordered red beans, gumbo , seafood platter, and mustard greens. First, the gumbo isn't as flavorful as I remember, I tasted a canned chicken stock or broth. It didn't taste the same. The red beans aren't creamy and taste primarily of cracked black pepper. Mustard greens didn't have a lot of flavor but were edible. My seafood platter was delicious, shrimp catfish fried oysters , definitely my favorite meal. The fried chicken is very very good. I love this restaurant's ambiance, local African American art work is beautiful and must be seen. But in my opinion and experience the gumbo and red beans need work. read more

So we went to the bar (nice bartender!) and about 10 minutes later we had a table. It was lunchtime on a Wednesday and it wasn't full. Hands down the best food and dining experience we had in New Orleans. It's Southern, Creole, soul food at its best. We went on a weekday at about 1 PM and the wait without a reservation was still at least an hour for the main dining room. The wait for food service at the bar was only about half that, so we got some local New Orleans beer and waited in the bar. The service here was outstanding and the vibe of the bar was cool and comfortable. The food was absolutely amazing. We started by sharing a beet salad. I love beets to begin with, but this was the best beet salad I've ever had. Golden and red beets roasted to perfection, served with goat cheese, boiled eggs and candied pecans over a great mix of greens and with a wonderful house vinaigrette dressing. Given the size of this starter salad, it would be almost impossible for just one person to eat it and still make it through an entree. Two of us were even getting full already. Then came the entrees! We had heard that their shrimp clemenceau was a standout dish and that proved to be true. Tons of gulf shrimp mixed in with fresh peas and mushrooms and the best seasoned roasted potatoes I've had in I don't know how long. All of these were tossed in an incredible garlic sauce. Each bite of potatoes ended up being a little bit crispy and also a little bit saucy. I managed to finish what was a huge portion. Our other entree was traditional New Orleans red beans and rice served with 2 pieces of fried chicken. The rice was full of andouille sausage and could have been a meal on its own, but then there was a large chicken breast and drumstick. The seasoning coating on the chicken made the skin delicious and the chicken meat inside was juicy and tender and very flavorful. Unfortunately this left no room for dessert (the people next to us said the peach cobbler a la mode that they had was wonderful). No wonder this place was an early James Beard Award winner. And not only that, it played host to many leaders of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. We highly recommend this place. I can't stop thinking about the wonderful experience we had at Dooky Chase's a little over a week ago! My husband and I were excited to finally get the chance to go to this New Orleans staple! We didn't have a reservation, but got to the restaurant a few minutes before opening in hopes that we'd be able to get in at opening, and the team was nice enough to get us seated after helping those with reservations! We shared a cup of Creole Gumbo to start and it was incredibly flavorful! I could have eaten a whole bowl. My husband chose the Chicken a la Dooky and I went for the Big Dooky (ribeye). And OH. MY. GOSH. The Big Dooky was some of the best steak I have had! He also really enjoyed the chicken! Even though we had no room for it, we went for the praline bread pudding and it was so delicious. The dining room was really beautiful and the people were wonderful. Truly, the service was incredible and made the experience that much better! read more

Sadly Chef Leah Chase died in 2019 at the age of 96. The lunch buffet here has always been amazing as it let you sample items such as the fried chicken, shrimp creole, jambalaya, red beans, mac 'n cheese, green beans, and dessert. The famous gumbo z'herbes is a dish that is usually just served once a year and that is a crowded and popular day at this venue that can be an interesting experience if you can get in. It was always a treat when Leah Chase was in the house as she usually made a point to come out and say a few words to folks so her absence is certainly notable these days. The Mrs. and I had lunch yesterday at the venerable Dooky Chase's Restaurant. We arrived about 12:30 and didn't have a reservation. The hostess said it would be about an hour so we decided to wait in the bar. The bar is very small and was packed. The bartender seemed a bit overwhelmed so it took a while to get our drinks. As our drinks arrived the hostess let us know that our table was ready. I think we waited 20 minutes at the most. We were seated at a table in the main dining room. From what I can tell, the restaurant is made up of three dining rooms. All with a different color scheme. The wall decor is made up of paintings from various artists in different styles. I found the space to be comfortable. We looked over the menu while we enjoyed our drinks. It took a while for our server, Ricky, to show up but we didn't mind. The one thing I learned in New Orleans is that nothing moves quickly and you just have to embrace NOLA time. We started our meal off by sharing a bowl of the Creole Gumbo. We had some on a food tour the day before and were really disappointed. Dooky Chase's more than made up for it. It was seasoned perfectly and was what I was expecting to find in New Orleans. Not some hotel kitchen abomination. The Mrs. ordered the fried chicken. Three succulent pieces of beautifully crisp dark meat(you can choose dark, white, or mixed) perfectly seasoned with some of the Creole heat. For a side dish, she ordered the onion rings which were light, crispy and just so good. I was torn between the red beans and rice or the Shrimp Clemenceau. Ricky talked me into the shrimp which were sautéed in garlic sauce, peas, mushrooms and brabant potatoes. The flavor was incredible. I wasn't sure about the peas and potatoes together but they balanced really well together in the dish. For dessert we ordered the Peach Cobbler. I'm not really a cobbler kind of guy but it was really good. Very rich and buttery. Our meal at Dooky Chase's was one of the best we've had on our NOLA getaway. I wish we had places like it in Los Angeles. One thing I will say is that you need to be patient when it comes to service. I noticed a lot of tables would wait a while to have their order taken. Some diners appeared more frustrated than others. There were times where it seemed a bit chaotic being that some wait staff weren't sure if a table was assigned to them. read more

Food was good solids southern cuisine. I had red beans and rice, with 2 pieces dark friend chicken. Red beans and rice were excellent perfectly balanced in flavor. I also had the greens, baked mac and cheese, and green beans. Mustards greens some of the best I have had and green beans were perfect! Mac and cheese was ok it fell a little flat for me. The temperature on all the sides were slightly less warm than I would like but the flavors were wonderful. The service is slow and I was waiting for my check for about 15 minutes longer than I feel is respectable wait time once you finished your meal. They were busy but other restaurants that are way busier operate more efficiently in regards to turning tables. read more
